Campervan units bracket failure
Hello. Firstly thanks for tuning in.. We are now getting out and about in our self build campervan, its been just over a year since completion and I guess its time for some routine maintenance. Having just returned from a week in the New Forest, Hampshire we noticed one bracket in the overhead unit was showing signs of stress, further examination showed several more were very close to failure, which could have resulted in some unwanted damage. So this video is really just a heads up for fellow van lifers to take a moment to check their units as they too maybe unaware but experiencing the same issue.
Although I cannot remember where I bought the replacement metal brackets, they should be available in a number of hardware/DIY stores.

How to have a shower in any small van

Hello, welcome to our channel. We have just returned from a road trip in France, wild camping and meeting some great fellow travellers. Like all travellers the aspect of washing can sometimes prove a challenge, I have installed an outside shower system in the van, but understandably Radka is a little uncomfortable using it with other campers close by. So we came up with a very simple system tha...
How to sterilise your campervan water tank

Hello, firstly thanks for watching.. In this video i show you how you can sterilise your under slung water tank, without removing the main drain plug, therefore preventing a leak, which inevitable happens, after reinstalling the drain plug, due to grit/dirt damaging the seal upon removal and reinstalling. The 12v pump used was purchased off Ebay for around £9 sterling or $11.00.I added the hose...

Self build campervan conversion

Hello. My name is Roy and over 7 weeks, with some assistance from my partner Radka, I built a campervan using a Ford Transit Custom as my base vehicle. Once back on my driveway I set about the conversion, I am a sports therapist by trade, so no former experien...

Installing a Chinese Diesel heater into my house

Fitting underslung 40ltr water tank to Ford Transit Custom

    Hi Roy, i used to pull in fresh cold air but i found i needed a higher setting when the temps dropped to minus, plus the cold air draft when not in use was terrible lol. I cored a new hole and now recirculate the air inside the house.. No drafts and i can automate the heater without having to have the vent open all the time. The heater runs more efficient, the heat output is higher and i can run it at a lower setting and conserve fuel too. In 2 years ive had no issues with condensation 👍🏻 Check put my video on how i automated it 👍🏻

We only had to cut one and only one end, which unfortunately led to it not hanging perfectly level when rolled up, it drops slightly due to the weight imbalance I guess. So if cutting do both ends.

    Someone made a video with different upgrade mufflers. The upgraded muffler with the straight-through pipe is quieter and has less back pressure also it is less expensive. I would think the bigger muffler would be quieter but it's not and the backpressure causes problems.

    I'm looking at doing something similar but routing the intake air to draft from in the house. I want to do this for two reasons. First is problem of pulling its own exhaust gases into the house. The second is the efficiency of heating internal air. I hope to build a box that mounts like a window air conditioner.

I can definitely appreciate the concern regarding CO2 I fitted a carbon monoxide alarm immediately above the air outlet and during install used a CO2 tester at the exhaust outlet to check for leaks.

    I heated my old farm house 1,500 sq ft with 2 diesel heaters 2 years ago, worked good. Used just one until the temps got extra cold, then fired up the 2nd one. Now, I'm going to use some flexible dryer duct and put it around an extended exhaust (I already have both) and run a small DC fan at the bottom of the heater where the exhaust starts and split it off before it goes outside. I should be able to nearly double my heat output from 1 heater depending on the CFM of the fan. Easy and cheap way to increase efficiency.

    If you still have the muffler, have you tried replacing the pipe inside with a erforated straight pipe and added fiber baffle? This will yield 2 45° bends internal for a total of 90° within. Couple that with most people's single 90° exiting the unit, and that stays below the 270° max. I'm thinking of trying this myself, and if it works, would yield the best results and silencing for most.

    Appreciate the video. I’ve been using both genuine and Chinese diesel heaters for ten years now. Both work perfectly, but one a a whole lot cheaper than the other. My OEM gasket set cost the same as a new Chinese heater here in NZ. As a retired engineer, I’ve just ordered the muffler you have replaced, that caused your issues. Can I ask, how long was your exhaust and about how many degree bends you had in it. From my research, the ripple tubing that they supply for exhaust tubing does have a minor effect on muffling noise, but it also restricts the flow of gases to a minor extent. Add a few 90 degree bends, and you have a recipe to increase back pressure? Thank you for your thoughts on this for me and others researching this subject.

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 3 місяці тому

      Hello. I'm glad my video proved interesting. My set up is a eberspacher airtronic d2 fitted in my campervan, the exhaust is about 80cm long with one 90 degree bend directly below the exhaust port, allowing it to angle itself down the chassis, it is then sloped gentle downwards to prevent any water trapment. The exhaust is an original Ebespacher exhaust which is thicker and has smoother ripples than the Chinese alternative. As mention I removed the upgraded exhaust and replaced it with the original chinese exhaust as eberspacher dont often come with a muffler, and it appears to work fine now. I have yet to service it though so cannot comment on possible coke buildup inside the unit, but I can confirm it runs very efficiently having checked with a co2 meter. Hope that helps.

    How many hours did you run the heater with this muffler? I installed it as well (before I saw your video) and even though I have used the heater only four a short period of time (less than 50 hours) over the last year or so, it stopped working. I took it apart and it was full of soot. Literally. the exhaust opening on the bottom had like an 8mm opening left in it, the rest was filled with soot. I opened it up and cleaned it and it works again. When I was testing it, I noticed some black smoke from the exhaust. I went into the hidden menu to change the air/fuel ratio (more air, less fuel) and now it is ok. I hope it will not soot up as quickly as before. So I was wondering if this might have something to do with the extra muffler (and a piece of extra exhaust pipe). Maybe it causes some extra resistance that might cause the heater to suck in less air (what goes in must come out after all). I am not sure, I haven't tested it without the muffler, it's just a theory. I am curious about your experience with it. BTW, I'm in the Netherlands BTW, so It's not an elevation issue :)

      @alexbik hello. Thanks for visiting my channel. I was initially impressed with the silencer, following this test, although it was only a test so was not run for very long. I did however fit the silencer to my van, where I have a erbespatcher d2 fitted and within 30 minutes, once the van got to the required temperature and clicked into minimum setting, it would flame out, ie turn the heater off, and keep trying to restart it. As soon as I removed the silencer and reinstalled the original one (same as cheap Chinese type) my problem went away and has never returned. So I can definitely say from experience they do restrict emissions venting, hence your build up.

    We use a handheld metal flower mister filled with hot water for a face wash - and for a full shower a 2.0 litre Garden spray with adjustable spray. Saves hassle and loads of water. Van doors we use magnets to hold a shower curtain. All simple ,effective , fast and cheap without faff.

      Hello. Thanks for viewing, their are many ways I guess, I have installed a full hot/cold shower feed at the back of the van to use similar to yours only Radka was not comfortable showering outside in public, so we opted for this system so she can shower with a little more privacy and in any weather.

  • @Photostoryhr
    @Photostoryhr 4 місяці тому

    You have a low height van so you can not be very choosy about the shower. The problem with that system is that you have to be very very careful when taking the shower, otherwise you will have water all over. That is more of a mini bathtub than a shower. Another problem with set up like this is that you have to wait for it to dry before storing it. Anyway, better than nothing. Enjoy.

      @royclark8385 4 місяці тому

      @Photostoryhr hello thanks for your thoughts. We have a pop top fitted so can stand up for drying, but not whilst washing for obvious reasons. We have been using this system for several holidays now and as of yet not experienced any spillage issues, but admittedly it does come with restrictions and you do need to be careful when using it.

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 4 місяці тому

      As for waiting for it to dry, we have a microfiber cloth we use to dry it directly after use, so it can be folded and stored following use.

      @MarkMc-66 Hi. Not sure why that is but have you tried wiring the two led strips into each other, so the working correctly led is also powering the other led. By passing the factory wiring loom of the 2nd cargo light.

    I have just bought some from the same place. Fortunately for me all the pieces were in the box. The instructions that came with it, which are very basic, show removing the bolt from that bracket and fitting it under or over the bracket then refitting the bolt. This means the runner bracket fits without modification. I have a SWB so perhaps it’s different but unlikely. I assume the front of the vehicles are the same.

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 8 місяців тому

      Hello. Thanks for viewing and suggesting a possible cause. The exhaust is directed out the opposite end of the box to the air intake, I have subsequently moved the tank 5 meters away from the unit, but still getting smell upon start up, not so on shut down if I run it on high for 10mins before shutting down. I believe its a manufacturing fault in that the gasket for the burn chamber is not sealing correctly, so come the summer I will strip it down and reseal the chamber using new gaskets and heat mate Silicon to create a better seal.

    You mentioned about having word camper on van. Is for for dvla registration Ive been told you can't get registered as Campervan with pop top. Have you managed it. I have to pay over £800 for insurance. But if Campervan registered. Brings it down considerably

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 9 місяців тому

      Hello. Yes it was added to help register as a campervan, I did hear about the poptop not helping my cause although I know of a few new vehicles which are exactly the same as mine but are registered as campervans, ie ford nugget, vw california. I am awaiting the letter from the dvla confirming its new identity, which I suspect will be "van with windows". If this is the case I will seek clarification as from what I can ascertain from mine and the nugget is mine does not have an awning rail fixed onto the side such as the fiamma awning rail.

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 9 місяців тому

      Hello again. I recieved my response from the dvla, its been reclassified as "van with windows" and the seating capacity has been changed to 5, which is important for insurance purposes. I am considering appealing as the transporter from vw I understand is registered as a campervan, and I suspect the Ford nugget is too qhen direct from the manufacturer.

    Lovely conversion. I've got a Renault trafic 2019 lwb premier edition. Looks like yours is lwb. Ive looked many places for bamboo for my tops. But could only find for full boards. Where did you get yours from

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 9 місяців тому

      Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting. Yes our is the LWB, we had a mazda bongo before and felt the standard custom was too similar size wise to the bongo. That extra 40cm makes a big difference. We bought our units Inc worktops from Evo designs, you could try calling them to see if they will supply just the tops. I bought uncut tops as I wanted to install a separate sink and 2 burner hob than traditional builds, (as seen in the video) and therefore cut out the recess as required.

    Very good explanation of your setup. I've just bought the same cbe kit and im now going to do the battery charger the same as you. Can i ask which one of the 3 settings you have the charger on for your batteries as im going for agm ones ?

      @royclark8385 9 місяців тому

      Hello Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. I too have agm batteries, off the top of my head I cannot remember the position although I did do as the guide instructed, and I don't want to miss inform you. I can say that the system is really nice, although some features we did not need, such as the electric step. The mains fed battery charger works very well, I kept my batteries topped up via this during the past colder months. If you do not have the operational manual, let me know and I will dig mine out and confirm the settings.

      @royclark8385 thanks for the reply. I have the manuals that came with it thanks but like you've done i want to change the way its set up like you have, I'm also incorporating separate feed off from fusebox to feed a gang of lights and usb and I already have a durite split charge fitted so no need for fusebox to connect to my ignition or alternator, thinking about it now I should have just bought charger and rcd box and just a normal fuse box !!!!

    • @royclark8385
      @royclark8385 9 місяців тому

      Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting. I used stainless steel screws, I think from memory they were 25mm. I only screwed into the Sikaflex down wooden batten, as I did not want to create unnecessary holes in the actual van floor. My logic was the weight of the bed(80kg) which is bolted through the van floor, the units plus the Sikaflex batten would hold the plyboard floor in place.
