First song from the Massive Wagons set in memory of the late Dave Myers. One half of the "Hairy Bikers" duo. Thanks to @MassiveWagons for the photos yesterday, great to meet you and if this video isn't something you want put on UA-cam just let me know.
Did I waste my money or would you have done the same?

1 - Rush - Permanent Waves 2 - Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz 3 - Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell 4 - Genesis - Duke 5 - Judas Priest - British Steel 6 - AC-DC - Back in Black 7 - Def Leppard - On Through the Night I'm the same way with Rush. If I'm in the mood, I love it. If not, I just can't get into them. Permanent Waves is my favorite album from them. I don't like Maiden without Bruce and Adrian. It isn't awful, but I generally pass on those first 2 and the 90s albums. I appreciate Motorhead, but I've never been able to really get into them. #7 would also be my "Glaring Omission". It's sad that Def Leppard moved away from this style. Their first 3 albums are great, but they really lost it after that.
Yeah I don't hate Hysteria but I'm not huge on it. I tend to like the singles rather than the deep cuts on that.
I know you said you’re not a fan of the new wave of heavy metal. But Diamond Head and Saxon (especially Wheels of Steel) released corkers in ‘80.
Ive heard the Saxon album. Seen both bands live. Just no interest though
@@metalmickey which is obviously fair enough.
I’ve been doing top ten videos. I had a 7 month gap between 1985 and 1986. British Steel is my #1.
Great video mate, looking forward to the rest of this series already. With regard to You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise, I'm 99% sure you are thinking of Imicus, who covered it for the Metal Hammer cd. They were from here in Luton, and I'm friends with the vocalist and one of the guitar players in the band
Oh man that's a small world! It's an excellent cover they did.
"Shoot you in the Back" is my fave Motörhead song of all time! I know you´re not a big fan of the NWOBHM but: If you step out of the box a little bit and don´t necessary see Angel Witch as a NWOBHM band, their debut is a classic. Great songs , great atmosphere and a heartful delivery...
I used to have that Angel Witch album years ago. I liked the title track and that was it. I just don't GET that NWOBHM stuff. I think quite a few of the singers sound almost female 😂
Great list! My number two would be Black Sabbath: Heaven & Hell. Ace Of Spades would be my number one too. I don't even know what albums did released back then and I am too lazy to check. Hells Bells really still sound just as good as it did back then. That GNR comparison now that you mentioned, that could be GNR song. Looking forward to your other lists. I just wish they were longer lol. All the best!
Cheers Dude. Well there's going to be plenty at least 😂
I’m happy you’ve come around on early Priest & Rush. Easy to guess your #1 for 1980. I forget where you’re at with Heaven & Hell? easily my #1 from 1980.
I'm not into Dio era Sabbath at all. I don't own that one now. I tried for a few years though.
Excellent video Mike! Great albums you picked from 1980. AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden. I'm not a Rush fan (I know, what??? That can't be??).
Probably doesn't help being as young as you are though Tony
My best friend in the 80’s loved Rush. I used to tell him Rush are great musicians but they suck.
@@vinylrichie007 😂 try again with them
To be honest mate I don't like any metal from that era, aside from Iron Maiden. I'm not into 'heavy metal' as such, more extreme metal. Back then I was only 8 and was listening to the radio up until late 80s, so I like the chart stuff from 70's and 80s - I didnt own a radio post 89 and hate any chart music since. I do own the early Ozzy albums, but I have never liked Black Sabbath lol. So it's difficult for me to pick albums from 1980 - I was more into songs back then rather than albums. I didnt buy any physical albums until about 1985 when I was 13, and they was still pop music - two years later in 87 I was into metal and by 1990 death metal.
Yeah these are things I dug back into. Early 1980s was Adam and the Ants and Madness in my world. I was a singles buyer. The Specials Ghost Town, Nena 99 Red Balloons 😂
@metalmickey think first album I bought was Pet Shop Boys lol
@@metalmickey Pat Benatar 'Hit me with your best shot '
Good video. Apart from the Ozzy and Motörhead ones, they're all among my favorites. The Ozzy and Motörhead ones are good too, but just never resonated with me like the others do.
Yeah I get it. I'm sure I'll throw up some head scratchers for people during the next 9 videos !
@@metalmickey Love your headscratchers, so I look forward to your next nine videos for sure :)
Thought pyou were gona leave Iron Maiden as a glaring omission. Good shout with Motörhead, AC/DC and Maiden. You sold yer AC/DC albums..?!! Oh dear. Good ideja for s series Mike.
Cheers Dave. Yeah I was thinking of stripping back to just the essentials with my collection and I have done that yo a large extent. I thought AC/DC weren't essential to me but it turns out they are 😂
@@metalmickey6 AC/DC should be the backone of every collection! And Maiden and Motörhead.!
I love cold lake.
Hi Mike. I'm trying to find a video you made a few years ago, called something like 'Discovering Dark Heresy" it was for an unknown death metal band in the UK. I can't see it. Can you direct me to it? thanks.
I don't know mate I must have deleted it for some reason. Sorry about that
Great interview Mike! Very interesting. You got some good answers from the pair of them.
Cheers Grant
Another solid flick through! ZZ Top are good fun, but I don't know them well myself. They certainly aren't Metal. I'd probably describe them as Bluesy Boogie Hard Rock, or something. Probably not your cup of tea! 😂 Cheers! 🤘
No I can imagine lol. I seen a video once and their guitars spun round and I thought no not for me
@@metalmickey 🤣🤣🤣
"Why are ZZ Top on the cover of Kerrang?" That's a seriously in depth question, Mike. These mag flips through are a great flashback to earlier times in rock and metal. 🤘
Jürgens is a better magazine if you look at his video. Plus he's playing an album from the time and it's sat on a t shirt from the time AND he's got more info on everything. I hope he doesn't do any more 😂😂😂
Hi Mike!!! Yeah, it0s kind of strange seeing ZZ Top in Kerrang in 1990, it's a couple of years after Eliminator their 80's album, however i don't think you will enjoy them..... Btw what are you gonna do with the Sabbath family tree poster?? cheers and be well
I don't know probably nothing. I don't tend to use the posters. What did you have in mind?
@@metalmickeyI thought it would be awesome to see it framed in your music room.
@@cristianosorio2517 Yeah the thing is I'm not particularly bothered about Black Sabbath lol
@@metalmickey Haha... fair enough mate!!
I haven't heard a lot of ZZ Top, but I did like the Eliminator album. Also heard a few singles from before and after that album that I liked. It's not really the type of music that you normally talk about liking, but that album really isn't that far off from some of the earlier hair metal stuff. They definitely aren't metal, but some of it I would call bluesy hard rock.
Dam, I was at that Kings X gig!
rancho texicano is a great way to hear what zz top were all about - best of and spans their whole career
I´ll let you know a little secret as well: I´m eating some pasta while watching this, hahaha... "Deguello" is my fave ZZ Top album but I guess you can pass them by as far as I know you. I should do videos in advance as well, I have 500 - 600 magazines lying around, hahaha...
Yeah get some of them shown. I'm definitely staying clear of ZZ Top. I don't even want to like them with that name 😂
Wow I can remember all these photos like it was only last week - what an era
Got plenty of magazine videos uploaded from Kerrang and Metal Hammer
Interesting video! Overall, I'd agree. A bad vocalist can neither ruin a great band, nor save a bad one. I've gotta be honest, I can't say I know what you're getting at with Bruce, though I can't stand Joey Belladonna's voice, but for some reason I still really like Anthrax. As for Mille and Mustaine - neither are great vocalists by any stretch, but they just somehow work with the music. Same with Sean Killian and Vio-Lence. I don't think they'd sound right at all with any other voice. I can't think of too many examples of bands I don't like, but do like the singer, but I probably could if I thought long and hard enough! As for Paul Stanley's comments on Dio, I think he's talking absolute shit, which is not unusual for a member of KISS! 🤣 Cheers! 🤘
Interesting to see you flick through this issue from the immediate aftermath of what is a well-known tragedy in British Rock & Metal circles. I was much too young to have attended any of the classic Monsters of Rock festivals, but went to 7 of the first 8 Downloads and Donington was hallowed ground to me and my friends, but always with an awareness of those 2 lives lost in '88. That statement from the organisers is both disingenuous and disrespectful as fuck. A genuinely shocking response to a tragic event that essentially passes the blame onto the victims. I guess that was the culture at the time though, as the same approach was taken by the authorities after Hillsborough a year later. Despicable. Cheers! 🤘
Yeah good point about Hillsborough. Likely a tactic of the time but I don't suppose it's much different these days. 7 or 8 Downloads eh. We must've been at some the same. I went in 2004 and 2005 and before that I can't remember if it was 1 or 2 Ozzfests. 2 oldie worlde Donningtons in 92 and 94
I love Megadeth so I feel his vocals do make the band, but he’s made only for the stuff he does, he kinda writes around his voice, and he definitely wouldn’t work fronting other bands, another one Is Vince Neil he can’t sing at all but he’s Motley’s sound as I know lol, Motley had a better singer in Corabi but no one accepted it, cool video idea
Cheers Frankie. Hope you're doing well dude 🤘
I have never owned any Queensryche, lol. I never got any Nevermore because I didnt like his voice. Megadeth wouldn't be the same without Dave, he can't sing for toffee but it's what it is and sets them apart. I hate Danzig too, sounds like Elvis - music is decent though. Since him mainly into death metal vocals don't bother me usually anyway
Oh I'm fussy about death metal vocals too. Things have to be right. I haven't listened to a lot of death metal this year actually
By rights megadeth are a band I should like and have in my collection but your brilliant dave mustaine impression is the reason I've never taken to the band it's a shame because some of their music is brilliant nice video idea mate
Cheers Robert. I think the best vocal performance he ever did was on So Far So Good So What. Apart from the bad Sex Pistols cover that is.
Interesting video here mate. You made some very good points I absolutely love Megadeth but by can't disagree with the things you said about Mustaine. With you on Udo, he's got a unique sound but he's never been a great singer. Cheers Mike
For me he sounded at his best when he was probably in his drinking and drugs phase!
Hi Mike!!! cool topic because singers can make or break the band..... take for example King Diamond awesome music, but for many listener when KD hits the first note/falsetto, it's all over!! Also you're right about Queenryche "attitude" i like the band, but not crazy about them, saw them live once still with Tate and it was a "correct" show. Mustaine in a perfect world shoudn't have ever been a lead singer, but according to his version of the story he had to..... I liked Phil Anselmo when he used to "sing" in their glam records and "Cowboy's...."/"Vulgar....", but then he started to growl and try to hard to sound tough. Btw totally agree with your thoughts about Dio discography quality. cheers!!
Cheers Christian, I've tried and better tried with King Diamond, just can't do it lol
Man i really haven't been a fan of the last few albums thats kreator has put out. It just doesn't have that same feel and aggressiveness as the earlier kreator
No it doesn't but i've been with them since 1987 so I have a soft spot
@metalmickey their 80s albums are my favorite, and I would include coma of souls being classic kreator. I didn't care for their experimental 90s era. Violent revolution to phantom antichrist are really solid albums in my opinion. Overall I'm still very much a fan of KREATOR.
I totally agree when you said “it just works”, I’ve listened to isolated vocal tracks & just thought to myself “that’s awful” lol. I always thought Mille sounded like a crow at times, I guess that’s why crow’s don’t piss me off anymore ha ha. Good one Mike 🤘
Surely a Raven not a crow 😂.
@@metalmickey A raven crow hybrid 😂
Good video with some interesting vocal performances and voice acting by yourself :) It's interesting, that texture that Bruce Dickinson's voice has is one of the reasons why he's one of my favorite singers. When I heard Maiden the first time, I'd never heard anyone ever sing like that. I think Mustaine sounds less bad on some albums than on others, but - yeah - the music does make up for a lot of it. I haven't really bothered with Megadeth recently mostly because of all the silly drama and the unevenness of their discography post 'Youthanasia' though. When it comes to Queensrÿche, I have to admit that on 'Hear in the Now Frontier' and onwards, Geoff Tates' singing style got really boring, and It was only when Todd La Torre replaced him that I started finding them interesting again. I think the musicianship in Pantera was top notch, but the macho attitude definitely hasn't aged very well.
Yeah I think Todd La Torre is great. I think Queensryche have slipped out of popularity compared to years ago though. Id like to see him push on with his solo stuff.
Hello Mike, the Bruce thing on Senjutsu I was critical of and that was bad he had gotten over the cancer thing. He’s much better on Mandrake Project, infinitely better. So yeah my thoughts on Bruce with that record was overboard I realize that. That exact Megadeth album, I like musically and yet I hate that record simply due to the vocals. I love that impression you did. The worst pile of shit performance from Dave was Five Magics. Dude this was excellent. Well done sir!
Cheers Trevor and I hope the guitaring is coming along 🤘
@@metalmickey it is, slowly but surely. Cheers Mike 🤘🏻
Interesting video, Mike. I know where you're coming from relating to Dickinson, Mustaine, Millie etc. Vocally not the best but their voices are synonymous with stuff I grew up listening to. Eternal Nightmare is the only Vio-lence I ever listen to now. It literally is a stand alone thrashterpiece. Queensryche always seemed to me like a group of professional, talented musicians thrown together rather than an actual band and I've never, and never will, own Operation Mindcrime...bores me to death. Interesting to hear about Stanley exposing RJD for his vocal inadequacy and how he's conned the masses 😂 btw is the reason I have shit input from others due to me only showing rare underground stuff no one else shows? 😂 Always an education listening to your thoughts, brother 🤘
We seem to agree on most things here eh. What do you mean mate? Views are you on about or crap comments? I wasn't having a go at people who look to the underground. That's the only way bands can be noticed it's just that I can't be relies on by any of them lol. If you look at my buying over the last year or two I've just reached saturation point at the moment.
@@metalmickeyhahaha, I know you weren't having a go, Mike. I was just being my normal dick self 😂 It's certainly got me thinking about my favourite bands and if the singers can actually sing or if its the whole package together that works. I might have to reconsider some of my top bands 😂
WASP crimson idol, the drumming on it gets on my nerves trying to hard.
It's the same drum fill for every song isn't it
I've never got into Queensrych, over produced nonsense
I can see that yeah
VIO-LENCE . Everything you said and the singer wearing a poloneck on stage...no really on the dvd
Aye I know 😂 World in a World video that is on.
Interesting video Mike , I suppose vocalists are different to everyone’s ear..never thought Mustaine was a proper singer, but the early albums def carried him I love Queensryche and Tate, I get were your coming from but if I listen to them and other prog metal bands that’s what I expect, sure the lack of” aggression” but that’s not the style of music Paul Stanley commenting on Dio is laughable, never thought much of Paul Stanley as a singer, he’s as average as they come Great video Mate , really enjoyed this one Have you a fav vocalist or did you say ?
Cheers mate. I'd say probably Kiske would be up there for me but I don't think I have a definitive favourite.
@@metalmickey Nice , he’s def up there for me too, a special singer
I hate Queensryche...so boring . Never understood the love
I don't understand the love but I do think they have some decent songs but.... Business Rock
I agree with what you are saying on Bruce Dickenson, it is hard to place but his vocals seems whinny to me at times. I have a tough time with Mille Petrozza vocals after Terrible Certainty, I have mentioned it before, but sounds like a lisp. Dave Mustaine impression is priceless! haha, I almost lost my coffee.
We are very forgiving in the metal world for guys we like. Probably more forgiving than any other genre. I thought about putting Celtic Frost on the list too. Enjoyed the stream yesterday mate 🤘
@@metalmickey agreed, sometimes I think we like something because everyone else does haha. Maybe that is just my take. Vio-lence fir example, I used to hate the vocals and ignored that debut for a year or 2 until my friend played it so many times I started to like the vocals. I guess some things take time to grow on me. That live stream was fun, thank you for watching that! I forgot one vocalist for that and still kicking myself. Mike Patton.
I agree with you on Bruce. He's a very talented vocalist, but there's something about his voice I don't like. There's a yelp to it that I can only take in small doses. I'm a Di'Anno man. Mustaine is a great musician, but I think he sounds like a Ninja Turtles villain
Haha I always thought Bobby Blitz sounded like Skeletore
@@metalmickey 😄
If anything is going to kill my interest in a band, it's the singing. Either bad lyrics or bad singing. I do like Megadeth. That's a rare case where I can overlook the singing and still enjoy it. Rush was another one, but I'm fine with Geddy's voice now. Geoff Tate is an incredible singer. I love the Mindcrime album, but they really went downhill after that. I agree that everything sounds too perfect on their albums and there isn't any passion there. Also agree on Pantera. Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power were fantastic albums, but the whole attitude is too much. Anselmo does a pretty good Rob Halford impersonation, but they completely abandoned that and I lost interest in their later albums. Dio is one of my favorite singers. The stuff he did with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and the first few solo albums was incredible. It really doesn't matter to me if he's technically a good singer or not. I like listening to him, so that's good enough for me. Paul Stanley is a good singer, but anything that comes out of his mouth when he's not singing makes me cringe. He and Gene Simmons are both insufferable, but I still like the music.
I do have a love hate thing with Gene and Paul. I have the same thing with Scott Ian actually. I almost put Rush on the list. I took years to be able to enjoy them.
Nailed it on Queensryche! Cardboard Metal. Boring as bat droppings.
Haha yes
Funny you mentioned Dave Mustaine attitude as I was vinyl hunting yesterday at a shop in Melbourne and the owner was telling me he spent 2 weeks with Megadeth on tour in Oz for the Dystopia tour as he is good friends with Chris Adler and some of the stuff Mustaine did and demanded blew my mind. For me if the music is so good it can outweigh any weakness in vocals but that gets really hard to overcome if the vocal style is super clean and high pitched and the singer is just not nailing it
I can imagine Dave wants the impossible of people. There was a guy who made VC videos before your time I think. He done an impression of Mustiane when he came onstage for the Big 4 concert. It was perfect. Nodding and pointing at everyone and he said "you're all part of history today". 😂 Those Big 4 shows even have a DVD which I own but they've been forgotten just as fast as they were announced.
What do you mean with that rant about Mustaine? He´s the best singer anyway, he has great control and a wide range, live he´s even better! Such a pleasent and delightful tone in his voice, hahahaha... Seriously, John Conelly would be another example. His vocals have everything that might make you turn your back on him when he opens his mouth but it works perfect with the music and makes Nuclear Assault stand out from all the 80s Thrash bands.
Good call the Nukes yes! We all love them but you can see why someone wouldn't. Anyways.....Staaaaarrr liiiiigghhhhttt!!!! 😂
Far Beyond Driven - have to admit, it's a great album but it's heavy for being heavy's sake with little variation. Vulgar...had pace changes within tracks, melodic pieces, as did Trendkill. Oppressing the Masses has never had an official release in Britain. It'll have an audience ready for a reissue, preferably with Torture Tactics restored. One last thing - The Mandrake Project is a lot better than Sanjitsu. Aware that Maiden have exorcised their prog strengths to the full, that album was hard work to listen through.
Heavy for heavys sake. Good one that. You're right about that reissue. It would sell out in seconds because it's so scarce. Id even buy it myself lol. I wish Maiden would edit themselves a little.
Monsters of Rock always happened in August.... I tend to view Monsters of Rock and Download as two entirely separate things. They are not the same in my mind.
Nor mine lol. I haven't a clue about those bands these days
Ade Edmondson played Vim Fuego aka Alan Metcalfe, painter and decorator in Bad News.
What are you doing up watching this 😂
This is interesting to see what the aftermath of the Donington disaster was like. My dad and his mates were there, but they were lucky enough to not be involved. I remember my dad saying they were late getting home and my nan was worried sick, as it was even on national news and there was no phones back then. It sounded like Kerrang were papering over the cracks, of course people only started "slam dancing" at that one festival, not since the birth of Rock music! How blinkered they were back then. Anyway, cool to see through this magazine, and the part about Doningto, RIP to those who died 🤘🤘
Yeah it came on News at Ten and my cousin was there. I was worried I wouldn't get my Megadeth T shirt 😂. No in all seriousness though it was scary and my parents thought they were doing the right thing stopping me going. I didn't get there til 92 and 94.
@@metalmickey Oh damn, yeah it must have been very scary. The very least you expect going to a gig is you come home safe, very sad for those that didn't. Yeah, they rightly so had to be cautious, but least you were able to go eventually. My dad went to quite a few Donnington Monsters of Rock back in the day, but I've never had the chance to go yet. Least you were able to get your Megadeth t-shirt! 😁🤘🏻
So there was no moshing going on in 1987 when Anthrax we're whipping up the crowd with their hit single Caught In a Slam Dance?! A free filofax for students from Barclays, gotta love the 1980s!! Always enjoy a good 80s mag flick through.
