Range Rover 5.0 Timing Chain Noise Before and After Tensioner Replacement
2011 Range Rover HSE (5.0 N/A) are notorious for the timing chain tensioners wearing out causing engine noise and eventual engine failure if not addressed. At 125k miles my engine was quite noisy and definitely due for tensioner replacement. I opted to perform the “zip tie method” and only replaced the timing chain tensioners and not the chains. After replacing the tensioners the engine is quiet ( as quiet as a 5.0 can be) and running smoothly.

2011 Range Rover HSE Crank But No Start, Low compression due to severe overheating

Went and looked at a 2011 Range Rover HSE 5.0 n/a that was for sale locally. The truck appears to of been overheated severely and sounds like the compression is low and possibly that a piston has burned and is dragging on the cylinder. The seller’s price was too high so I walked away.

Land Rover Discovery 2 with only headers

This is my 2003 Land Rover Discovery 2 se with the 4.6 V8. After I rebuilt the engine I had a slight exhaust leak I was trying to fix and figured I might as well crank it up with only the headers. It was so loud the only thing I can compare it to is a nascar race.
exactly how mine sounded (although luckily I did't have codes yet). I replaced everything, including the tensioner, chain, guides, as well as cam phasers) and it sounds nice and quiet as well
What did you change on it ?
The timing chain tensioners
Any difference in sound at cold start?
It is amazing how much quieter these are after the service has been done.
Not really much difference on cold starts. My noise was mostly when it warmed up/warm starts
@@EtowahValleyRovers I agree the weird noises I heard were when the engine was warm. I was more pointing out how much quieter mine now is after having the work done.
How many miles? Did you have a check engine light for the cams? My 2010 is quiet on cold start up, but after it warms up and I turn it off and start it again, I can hear a similar noise. I would have thought cold starts would be worst for the defection timing chain guides.
@@warriorsf911no check engine lights, only was noisy when the engine was warm. I believe warm start is worse for the timing chain noise because when warm your engine oil is thinned out reducing the oil pressure, but I could be wrong.
You should change the valve body !!
Valve body was changed
Very satisfying.
Did you have to replace your engine? I’m dealing with that issue now
I never owned this one, was looking at buying it and the deal didn’t work out. But I’m pretty sure the engine was dead on this one and was either replaced or scrapped. Good luck with your issue.
@@EtowahValleyRovers can those low compression engines be fixed?
Ewwww automatic
That's all we got here lol
Excuse me, I have a big question, how did you remove the converter from the Tange Rover? I have the same one and I lowered the transmission but I can't get the converter out, please help me.
Is the converter still attached to the engine or the transmission? It should be easy to remove from the transmission with little resistance.
fair play to you very big job well done
My project L322 is having this same exact issue. I’ve done almost all engine work myself but never tranny work. I’m debating on whether or not I can do this in my garage like you did and just replace the bushing and seal.
It seems to be somewhat common problem on these. With the right tools I’d say you can do it. I was originally going to replace clutches and seals on my original unit but ended up with a better deal on a used unit. Good luck with it.
Hi do you know how to change the fluids in a 2013 range rover sport hse lux
Yes, it should have the same transmission as the one in this video. Drain fluid, replace the pan, and refill with the engine running. Once the fluid is up to 40 degrees Celsius and is dripping out of the fill plug at one drop a second it is full.
@@EtowahValleyRovers thanks for the info

Hi Ross, I own a 2011 Range Rover TDV8, and unfortunately the gearbox is bad. Apparently, the coolant was mixing with the transmission fluids, and at some point, the can stopped running. I was not understanding why the coolant was ending so fast, but it was very late, when I found the issue. My question is... how bad this can be, and if it can be repaired. Thanks
Hey I’m not really familiar with that engine as we didn’t get the diesel models in the US, but it sounds like transmission fluid got into your cooling system and might’ve damaged your engine. If that’s the case your engine might be irreparable and your transmission may be damaged too. Good luck with diagnosing it.
I guess all Range Rover gearbox made in China
My 5hp24 on my X5 failed a few years ago so I had it rebuilt by a specialist for £2000.
I am thinking of doing one as a project in Zimbabwe Someone is selling a body in pristine condition with i terior intact but no engine and no gearbox I intend buying used engine and gearbox in the UK where i live for now Any ideas and suggestions please Thanks in advance 👍🙏
Sounds like a big project. I would suggest buying a programmer capable of programming the new drivetrain to the car. Also it may be cheaper to buy a complete car that is wrecked and swap everything over from that vehicle.
@@EtowahValleyRovers Thanks for the reply. Does the programmer need special tools as this might be a problem in little remote Zimbabwe Could you please explain last part about a wrecked car and swapping over as I don't understand what you mean Thank you so much🙏😎
@@tindo9833some of the drivetrain components like the transmission have to be programmed to the car in order to work properly. You’ll need a specialized computer that will connect to the car and can code the necessary components. They sell the scan tools online in many places. For the second part of my original comment, look up the website Copart.com. On this website you can buy cars that have been wrecked in an accident for lower prices. It may be cheaper to buy a wrecked vehicle with a good engine and transmission and ship it to your country, then use the parts you need to rebuild the rover you’re looking at purchasing, then selling or scrapping the parts you don’t need. I could be wrong, but it’s something to consider.

What brand of trans oil did you use?
Liquimoly Toptec 1800. Was the cheapest for me to use and had great reviews.

Hi
I just bought a 5hp24 used trans for my 05 hse bmw rover for 500 bucks, dropped the trans laying in the yard, the TC bolts was a PITA, I used a dirtbike stand and pulled the middle piece out from the firewall laid on top of the motor and removed the top bell housing bolts and side bolts in 10 mins, you can reach them easily
Nice, I wish that had been the case with mine. Just not as much room in there with the 5.0.
Did you have to reprogram the new transmission to the ECU? If you used your old ECU was it easy to remove or does it take quite a bit of teardown of the transmission?
So if you reuse your original TCU then no programming is needed. You just have to pull the valve body out of the transmission and transfer the electronics from your original valve body to the new one, or just reuse the entire original valve body. Its pretty simple, you just have to be careful separating the electronics as the plastic of the electronic component can get brittle and break.
@@EtowahValleyRovers thanks so much. Wish I could hire you to do this. I just got quoted $2,400 just to remove the transmission and reinstall a used one
@@joelchevalier448sorry to hear that, good luck with it!
Did you have to remove the starter to remove the transmission
No, I removed mine but that wasn’t necessary
How many hours would you say was involved in removal process
Nice and a little jealous. I had a 2011 L322 and I was all ready to drop and rebuild my ZF transmission. Found suppliers of all the inner parts. Studied all the information, rebuilt the valve body just incase that was it (it wasn't). Then someone decided to hit my Range Rover by an illegal U-turn. They got towed away and I drove home in off road height and insurance totaled it. Besides it's premium mpg, best vehicle I've ever owned or driven. Plus I've found upgrades for its faulty engine parts. Metal engine coolant intake pipe and metal oil cooler pipe. Metal timing chain tensioner. euro-amp if you're interested. Can't stand the new ones with their horrible seats.
Yeah these things are tanks, it’s a shame how little it takes for insurance to total one of these out. Like you said, once you’ve done the critical things to the engine these are honestly super reliable. Just for whatever reason the transmissions seem to be a weak point. Shame about yours, but maybe you can get into another one soon they’re honestly getting dirt cheap for some of these.
Wow! Awesome Video
Hi how long it takes to replace it
I think it took me 2 or 3 days taking my time. Probably could've been done faster.
I wonder if you can put that thing in 4x4...
Full Time 4x4
snap on sells a 1 piece extension with universal socket for the TC bolts , it will take huge impact power
Well that was a nasty start up the engine gargled
I'll have mine out this weekend. What machine shop did you use? I'm thinking Q&E out of Ca.
How much did it cost you overall to rebuild?
@@IeuanBevan. I got my engine torn down and found my crank was trashed beyond repair. Block is still good. If crank wasn't destroyed I would've spent around 3 grand.
I use Coosa valley performance in Cartersville Georgia. Old school machine shop that does good work.
Wow!! I could only wish mine ran as good as that.
Well done. Could you please share the link for the solenoid set you bought

Great job man, I have a 2012 range rover 5.0 sc......can you tell me the name of the transmission....is it a zf6hp..I'm so confused
So yours has a zf 6hp-28 m shift. A lot of people think its the zf6hp-26 but that was only on 2006-2009
@Ross Norwood Ross thanks buddy I needed that info
Great job Josh!! I was a bit taken aback when I initially saw that you're doing this job in your garage with no lift. But then I was in SHOCK @&*#%$ when I saw that you weren't using jack stands and had the RR up in the air by putting the air suspension in the highest raised position. Oh, wait, o heard you just mention the word, "Safety Measure," when explaining installing the Transmission. A bit late bro.... Are you NUTS !!! To crawl under a RR trusting its air suspension??? One of the least reliable systems of the vehicle!! You know how when after running the engine and then you press the Down button and it lowers itself to "Entry" Mode? Well, I don't trust any part of the system. One simple switch & air valve lies between you and a pancake. And another thing.... NO JACK STANDS????
Yeah good point I should've used them but can't do anything about it now. Just saying with the battery disconnected the air suspension system cannot release air from the system unless I went and poked a hole in one of the airbags.
I am planning to hoist out my 5.0L non-supercharged engine on my L320 RRS. This thing is like a tank. I admire u being able to get the torque converter bolts out and I don't know how u could align the holes to put them back in. To remove the top bell housing bolts, do u remove the cowling to get access from top?
To access the top bellhousing bolts I just angled the rear of the transmission down and lowered it slightly so I had access. The motor mounts flexed enough that I had access to them. I think you might could remove the intake and cowling and rear crossover pipe to access the top bolts but I cant guarantee that.
@@EtowahValleyRovers thanks.
@@derekkchung These rovers are tanks, I just bought a 05 with the BMW v8 for 400 bucks with 250k kms that won't move in drive, in reverse it will move if its rolling, I know nothing about them, maybe the damn thing is just low on trans fluid, I'll find out tomorrow
just got you to 100 subs
Thanks will!
@@EtowahValleyRovers noproblem you helped me change my gear box
Glad I found you. We have the exact same vehicle, even the color. I just hit 75 miles. Do you plan to do a lot of videos on this vehicle?
I’ll probably make some more videos with it but there’s not too much more that I want to do to it. We’ll see what happens.
How many miles on the tranny before failure? Reason for failure? I have a 2010 Range Rover 5.0 with 200000 miles, currently the ZF is running great. Thank you for an outstanding video!!
Thanks! Mine suffered from a failed stator bushing, resulting in low pressure in the transmission as the fluid heated up and thinned out. This vehicle was actually quoted for a transmission replacement as far back as 76k miles, and the previous owner changed the fluid and filter then got another 50k out of it before it finally wouldn’t stop going into limp mode. I think this one was unfortunately just an outlier and failed early.
Some advice..... Be sure to change your transmission oil every 35,000 miles and also replace ALL of the seals inside the transmission. Seal failure is one cause of transmission failure. Don't wait for signs to show before servicing it. Another cause of failure is fluid & overheating. Keep an eye on the oil cooler. If you do the proper maintenance you'll be fine.
it looks like you had to pull the starter to gain access to the torque converter bolts. i'm curious how much it cost for your replacement trans you put in
I actually did not have to pull the starter, I just mistakenly thought I did. Torque converter bolts were accessed via driver's side access port. I ended up purchasing a parts car for $1000 rather than pay $500+ for a used transmission with higher mileage.
@@EtowahValleyRovers how did you spin the fly wheel to gain access to all of the bolts on the torque converter? did you have to use a pry bar and spin the flywheel or were you able to get a wrench on the crank?
@@ryanorr5755sorry just saw your reply, I just put a socket on the crank bolt and rotated the engine.
Did you jack up the car or set the suspension to off-road to give space? I thought i saw jack stands only towards the end of your video. Do you have follow-on videos during the mount with torque converter and how you filled the 11qt fluid? I have 04 Range Rover L322 with transmission slipping on 1st gear and it kicks hard and just slips from there. I get P0730 and P0731 codes. I might have to tackle it the way you did. Do you know how different the steps are? Didnt realize how much 2011 look the sane as 2004. Mine has the 5HP24.
So mine has a 2.5 inch lift so I just set it to offroad height for the majority of the time. The only time I had to raise the vehicle by jack was when I was moving the transmission out from under the car. I ended up not using all of that fluid but don't remember exactly how many quarts I used. I unfortunately don't have any follow up videos as it was honestly a big pain to set up and record steps and that's kind of why the video ends quickly. As for the torque converter it just slides off of the transmission, no bolts or connections. As for reseating it you just rotate it until you find the groove and it will slide right in. It's hard to explain but it kind of makes a distinct noise when done correctly so you will know when it's properly seated. There's a number of other youtube videos describing torque converter install as its basically the same for all transmissions. As for adding the fluid to the transmission I bought a hand pump to pump the fluid back into the fill plug on the side of the transmission. You should download the workshop manual for your specific car as it will have the step by step instructions for your model year with pictures and diagrams to help guide you. Yeah 2002-2012 all share the same body, just have different fit and finishes. They look really similar but are very different. Good luck with yours.
Thanks. Task is a bit daunting but your video is very helpful.
@@jcamellion thanks. It wasn’t the most thorough but figured it could help someone get the gist of everything that needed doing.
great job guy from jamaica
You can sold it??
Does the new transmission need to be reprogrammed or is it plug and play
It depends on what you do with your valve body. The transmission computer is built into the valve body so if you swap the valve body from your original transmission into your replacement transmission you won't have to do any programming. If you install a replacement transmission without swapping your valve body over you will have to have it programmed to your vehicle for it to work properly.
After replacing the transmission on an 09 HSC, how do you reset the TCM, transmission control module?
Sorry just saw this, you'll have to have it programmed to the vehicle if you didn't swap your original valve body to the new transmission.
I’m in Austin Tx by the way!
Got a 2007 l322 and man I love working on it. This video was really nice man. Do you plan to swap engine as well?
We also have an 07 L322 and no I don't plan to swap the engine at this time because it runs great but I will be replacing the timing chain tensioners sooner or later.
