Well that just seems uncalled for, even if the acting and obvious lack of technique is a sin against all of acting.

I'm calling out the quality of the voice acting on the merit of the voice acting itself. Anyone else can do what they want to do, if they want to be dickheads that's on them. Not my responsibility, not my problem. That's purely a problem of idiots being idiots. As for the VA I don't care what they identify as, if she does a bad enough job to warrant talking about I will talk about it. Trans people are people and deserve to be treated equally, as such that means they are also entitled to be critiqued equally as well on the merit of their performance. I give her points on the somewhat improved beginning of the re-recording, but she quickly abandons the weight and emotion of the delivery and that deserves to have attention drawn to it. As an actor her job is to perform and perform well, she has been heavily underperforming since debuting as the character, and that's even with having what I think is the right pitch and range fitting for the character. Bottom line, her delivery is completely off and the performance is lacking to a degree that it does detract from a major plot point and that's a huge problem for a story heavy game during a climax section. My policy as an entertainer is everyone here in the comments has a right to have their opinions, if they want to look like morons let them, helps to filter them out easier. I was made in the punk scene, when that scene still had teeth and will continue to operate as such. If people need to be straightened out then they get straightened out, usually in the form of being publicly mocked. So no, this doesn't give them a platform for anything, but your concern has been noted. You can argue with them as much as you want as well, just don't break UA-cam ToS and enjoy your time here.

@wylikaiyotee Well honestly I found nothing against Wuk Lamat VF. But hearing the VA I am sad for you, it's way under... but, I think the language play a big part in it. E in sphene is a long ee in english, wich is a plaintive sound, not feat for... resolution? In french it is pronounced like the e of "nest", and so I come out more resolute in tone

I'll have to check it out when I get the chance then! And language could have something to do with the difficulty of the line itself, but sadly the entire performance of the character was like it was in the first take for Wuk Lamat.

@@wylikaiyotee Y... yeah. Another one that I find terrible in english but better in french is Feo Ul. Also, Emet Selch sound a lot "pricky", like a malicious noble, but in french he feel more tired, that I think suit better the character!

LOL that is definitely an issue as well. The "oh look, she stands toe to toe with us in combat with no real period of growth." How long ago was it she needed 4+ people to kill a large bird?

Yeah I have hated this troupe in the game they have used a few times at this point. Thancred and Gaia pissed me off too. I don't really think her being their tanking a bit was really that impressive though. She wasn't gonna 1v1 Spene. They just need to stop putting NPCs on final boss fights unless it's someone damn powerful. Or make it a transitional phase where Wuk says that nonsense and gets sent back out or smacked to the side just in time for us to remember that we are giga Chad's and this was a joke from the start then we get up and whoop the ass.

@dulcetqho5770 it's an everything problem. The VA being bad makes the bad writing more apparent than need be, an actor carries a huge amount of weight. A good actor makes good writing great, and bad writing passable; conversely a bad actor will make good writing bad and bad writing a sin against writing.

Yeah, it went from no weight to some. Which is an improvement but it still should be better than half a good take and just giving up at the end of it lol.

I'd say it starts better, but yeah they drop it hard at the end which is definitely worse than just bad through out the whole line because you can see the inexperience all in one take.

What are you talking about? There is no cutscene in the extreme version.

I've yet to touch the EX version but from all the other EX trials I've done for instance Endsinger, they don't keep in story cutscenes iirc.

It changed before the first and second recording, and clearly with how the other voice actors were there was direction. "New and will grow" is an excuse only on smaller projects when you get something big you should have already cut your teeth, there is no excusing Bryer's lacking performance. That's clearly a skill issue on the actor's part. Like listen to how heavily the emotion is dropped from the rest of re-recording. If she kept it up it'd not have been an issue but it's like she got half way through and gave up.

Yes the game is big, but there still some moments where the voice acting is a little jarring on some of the earlier expansions. Amatuer or not, she still is doing what she can and she isnt the one who picked the voice recordings. Even the great creators have to start from somewhere. Like i said, lets try to be fair.

They fumbled it at the last part though in the second take. Like there is just a lot of delivery issues, no matter what it's bad. For a company like Square Enix it's honestly just sad if anything. They almost get emotion in the first half of the second take and then the delivery starts to go flat.

Yeah, there's just a lot wrong with Luke Warm Hat as a character to and the poor VA work just makes it stand out more. And don't get me started on Smile lol I have issues with that song lol

It kinda of does feel like a "this is the best of the worst" situation. In my past career in music I have had to deal with that when subbing for a band on a favor to one of their members lol.

This has nothing to do with the "femininity" of her voice for the character, I think the pitch and sound is great and what I actually want for the character. It's the delivery here that is just awful. The flat delivery, and the emotionlessness of it, the second take has more emotion and then just loses it with the scream. If she could manage to lock in the accent, deliver on emotion, and have some dynamics to her voice she'd be great in the role. As of now, I'm saying the best thing is a recast, because the character as written is already unlikeable and annoying (at this point I miss Lyse in Stormblood), and a poor performance just makes that stand out more.

@@wylikaiyotee I mean you can't say it has nothing to do with femininity when this is the first female character she's voiced, and literally ALL of her previous voice acting roles as men ARE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. The only difference is the sex of the character she's voicing lmao.

Nah, she hits the range and pitch perfectly for it to make sense for the character to feel right. It's her delivery and lack of emotion where it falls flat. That has nothing to do with the femininity of the character that's purely a skill issue.

As an avid watcher of Subbed anime. The sub in this is more disappointing than the dub on most occasions. Certain characters fall hilariously short in Sub for me. To list a few Zenos, THE ENTIRE CAST OF THE SCIONS besides Graha. He is good JP. Gaius, (both voices) As far as VAs go in dub I would say Wuk was the weakest main NPC by far

The acting isn't the problem. The problem is that they don't give the VAs context for what they're voicing.

While i dont like the voice actress personaly (outside of their performance ingame) the acting is 100% the fault of the voice direction, and that kinda goes for the whole cast

Voice direction may have been the issue with the first take but the second one clearly shows more direction and the VA still dropping the ball imo.

The quality speaks for itself and it is SCREAMING for a recast. I can't wait until we get someone else in charge of writing for game lead writer position in regards to the character, because this expansion is making me somehow miss Lyse in Stormblood.

Comparing the two recordings clearly they did have a change of direction and it still seems to be the 20% that's the issue here.

Oh, I'm sure they gave up after half of this. Too many lines for such a lackluster VA, they would have to re-record this to the afterlife for it to be somewhat decent and they work on a schedule.

Yeah, they probably ended up in a "just choose a take" situation. When I was a musician, I knew a few people that had to do that with clients, because people seem to forget that even with companies that studio time is a huge drain on funds. And that's why you need to have someone who has the talent for the performance in there. The direction only goes so far, but the execution lies solely with the talent of the performer. If the performer is lacking the director can't salvage it as much as one would want to think.

Idgaf who does a role as long as they can perform well in it, and this VA clearly doesn't. The quality speaks for itself. I'm not touching on the stuff you're bring up because again idgaf other than fitting the role and making it quality.

There are other Trans women with voice pitches higher than hers or who have never went through male puberty so their voices never masculinized. But besides that I don’t think her voice range is the problem it’s the lack of emotion that her lines had. Pointless transphobia as usual

Yeah, for me the delivery is the issue here. Idgaf about what anyone is or identifies as long as they can do the job well. The lack of emotion just makes it feel like there's an outright disregard for the quality of the end product.

The issues in the voice acting has everything to do with a man voicing her. The jaapnse voice is so good, as is the French and German voices.

No it's called voice direction. The actor wasn't directed to properly emote the scene like it was an action scene.

They clearly had more direction in the re-recording and it was still bad. As for "political message" no. You can fire a person regardless if they do a bad job and recast them, it's just a matter of if Square Enix cares enough about making sure to put out a quality product.

100% agree @Shatterstar, for the majority of the MSQ it felt like the microphone they were recording with was at the end of a hallway. This just so happens to be the most egregious issue since it's; A) A highly prominent part of the story. & B) The most obvious re-recording. If this was endearing like the EW grapes it would be fine, but there is nothing endearing about it or Luke Warm Hat as a character.

I mentioned the political message issue because a lot of pea brains make her identity a issue and don't look at it just from a quality of work perspective. It would look like Square Enix bends the knee to those people.

For me I could excuse how frankly intrusive, and bland Luke Warm Hat is if she had a half way decent performance behind her. But so far all she is, is an annoyance at best. And I completely agree for as little interest as Koana holds he's far more interesting than her. And not to mention his voice acting hard carries the scenes they're in together.

What I'm saying is that there is no reason for such minimal improvements, if the VA isn't carrying any of the weight of the character as this well standard of voice acting reflects, then some form of recasting is in order. Yes the ENG dub isn't great, but to stand out this much in levels of poor quality is impressive in all the wrong ways.

@@wylikaiyotee There is nothing minimal about the change in these recorded lines. They are a marked improvement and contextually far more fitting for the scene. If anything, the original issue was clearly a fault with direction the voice actors received, because it was not only some of Wuk Lamat's lines that fell flat in this expansion. Baffling and disproportionate criticism going on, here.

Marked improvement is far to generous. It's improvement but not a great amount. Even with added direction it's ultimately an issue of the VA here and it's blatantly obvious by how flat affect the scream on the re-recorded versions scream being less fitting to the scene than the first's. Not to mention the delivery for something like this carries next to no weight of what it should for the context of the scene. The direction issues clearly had to have been fixed with what the differences are between the original and re-recorded version but ultimately it still falls flat. For a franchise of Final Fantasy's size and status this kind of performance is dismal at best.

@@wylikaiyotee Dismal at best? I'm sorry, I know this is all subjective, but I cannot trust your judgement or your sincerity after a remark like that. Since many cite the Japanese performances as the gold standard, I even took time to compare for this scene, which wavers between mumbling and shrieky - this new English recording is much better and captures Wuk Lamar's passion, desperation, and determination. Had there been anymore emoting in that performance, we'd have had enough ham and cheese to open a deli.

Any performance where you drop the weight and emotion half way through it is dismal at best. I cannot in good faith give any amount of high praise when someone just gives up half way through. Is it better than before, yes. Marked improvement, I would disagree. If you want to question judgement or sincerity on that you're welcome to as that too is simply a subjective opinion as well. Points on the deli bit though, that gave me a chuckle.

@wylikaiyotee She doesn't sound always clearly female (and I've just read why that's the case), which would rather fit for "gender bender" roles than this one imo, and the acting isn't ideal, yes. Just to be clear though: If people are unhappy, they should NEVER be rude towards the VA. Actors can improve with experience, and the instructions they receive during recording sessions matter as well. In general the recruiting and casting people are mainly responsible for such things, and could spend more money to employ more experienced people if they wanted to.

See I don't really hear the not "always clearly female" part, I'm talking the flat delivery. Like the basics of acting here feel like they are being ignored and I hold all involved responsible. It's clear they had to have known it was bad otherwise they wouldn't have had it re-recorded, but the end scream on the before is better than the after, and the rest of the line delivery is only slightly better than before. It clearly sounds like it has had more direction put into this take and it was still bad. If an actor sucks at acting, you have to hold them accountable for their poor performance, not only is it a craft it's their profession. They are responsible for their abilities. As such if they take a role they are unfit for, for any reason; lack of technical skill, knowledge of the franchise, or just being too new to the industry all together that is on them for signing the contract. I'm not saying to be rude to the VA but a bad VA is a bad VA and it's fair game to point out as a criticism of the game, so we can hopefully see Square do something about it fix the quality either through a recasting or seeing to it they wrangle and train the VA properly in house.

Yes! And we also have that gambler glam in the Golden Saucer, which would be awesome to make as a starting hub for a class! Ngl I could also see the dice working similarly to outlaw rogue during WoW's legion expansion and that being a good way to handle making RNG for it fun!

It also had a dice system that affected dps I can't recall the exacts of it since it was never my main, but I would definitely suggest looking at it! Tell me if it fits the theming and gameplay loop you had in mind! :D

I remember sleeve draw! I never got too used to it though, sadly I wasn't really able to get the chance to heal all that much in ShB. I am glad to hear from an AST main on this though! I have been ignoring the defensives in burst as well since tbh they just kind of feel more bloaty and in the way than useful in that window as far as I can tell by feel. And yeah the RNG in EW felt a bit too much, but now the pendulum swing to having none at all feels pretty bad imo. Maybe it's because of being a bard main, but I feel like a little RNG makes a class more fun. To borrow from psychological terms I much rather prefer classes that are fixed ratios with variable interval than fixed ratio with fixed intervals. Sure it's more stable now, but it's like making tanks so self-sufficient that it's completely possible to survive things while staying barely awake, and over all I don't think that's fun. It's nice to see the cards have personality again but yeah a redesign could be in order. What would you like to see them do with them? What do you think would serve the current iteration of AST better than what we currently have?

@@wylikaiyotee First, do away with the Astral and Umbral swing completely. Novel idea in theory(Moonkin Druid in WoW has a DPS rotation that swings back and forth between sun and moon depending on where you are in the rotation and it works well there), but definitely not a good execution in practice. Keep the card effects mostly the same/similar but have 3 DPS increasing effects and 3 defensive/utility(or make it a 2/2/2 split with 2 being offensive, 2 being defensive, and 2 being pure utility, like a movement speed increase), but allow a player to holster up to 3(or 4) for use at any time(no more than 2 being of a same usage sphere. eg. can only have 2 DPS cards). Reduce the card draw cooldown to 40s(30s if holstering 4 cards) to facilitate multiple card draws for holstering between bursts. All of this allows for the randomness element without it feeling like a chore to scum for the right draws when you need them. It also removes the absurd bloat in burst, spacing out your setup for the next burst in the downtime which is the entire ideology of why a job has a rotation in the first place. I honestly believe AST theoretically has the highest APM in burst of all the jobs because of the bloat in window, now that NIN is dumbed down. (VPR is highest overall APM with NIN second and AST third) Keep Lord and Lady largely the same, but make them targetable so you can center the radius on another player/enemy instead of centered on you(Like Cure 3 on WHM). I've caused wipes on this current tier because a ranged DPS was slightly too far away from me when I used Lady during a mechanic. Because we're doing away with the current draw system in favor of this highly modular one, Lord procs on Blue cards, Lady procs on Red and each have an internal cooldown of like 30-90s(I haven't theorycrafted this yet so I'm just spitballing numbers) so that you can't save all Blue cards for burst and just weave Lord 3 times. I'd like to see cards that do actual damage to an enemy and/or that apply an additional DoT(like Aero 3 used to do on WHM, RIP Aero 3), but I understand how much rebalancing of the kit would need to happen for that to work.

I like that, idea with the 2/2/2 split! And yes making the crown play cards targetable would be outright game changing. I do think that there should be more AoEs centered on target, the idea of outranging when there is no reason can be frustrating. Holstering would be awesome are you thinking it should functioon more like an expanded version of sleeve draw? The Astral/Umbra swing definitely makes sense thematically, but yeah since it only affects cards I would say getting rid of it entirely would make sense especially from the lens of looking at boomkins where lunar/solar has an actual impact on spells. An additional DoT would be cool or maybe even borrow from SCH and give something similar to Chain Stratagem, there needs to be a re-introduction of damage increasing abilities that are functionally speaking debuffs on enemies imo. On bard it was honest a crime going into ShB that they got rid of Foe's Requiem, it's be cool to see AST get something like that, and idk call it "Retrograde" or something. I think the ideas you have are really solid for the class!
