Going full carnival with Chest Fever at the Last Waltz
Переглядів 40612 годин тому
It's not every day you're told to "get carnival" on an iconic tune backed by a six piece horn band with one of your favorite piano players on the other side of the stage (Bill Starks). Here's the 12th annual Last Waltz concert at the Hamilton in Washington DC doing the Band's Chest Fever.
Gettin funky with the Deanna Bogart Band

Here's the tune Cold Duck Time with the Deanna Bogart Band. The planets aligned to have Jeff Reed subbing on bass on a night when Deanna had asked me to play a couple songs with her. Deanna's band is ridiculous. Deren Blessman on drums and Dan Reynolds on guitar. So much fun!

On the blues circuit the Paradise Inn is one of the best stops. If you play your cards right you play two nights in a row and your bed is 20 feet from the stage. When I was on the road with Gabe Stillman we played mostly straight-up blues, but with "Jack of Diamonds" we went a little sideways. This was a great band featuring: Gabe Stillman on guitar and vocals Ray Hangen on percussion Colin Bea...

I love this song. It's the most standardy of all standards in the jazz lexicon and it's one of my favorite songs. The chord progression has so much to offer and I learn new things every time I play it. Here's the old standard with my trio Here Comes Bronson featuring the great John Previti on bass and the dapper Nick Ruggieri on percussion (way off in the distance.)

Playing with Chopteeth was on my bucket list for nearly two decades. In the Washington DC area they have no equal. They're one of the only two bands (the other is Jah Works from Baltimore) that I will always dance to. And I don't dance much. My mother loved this band, and I loved playing with them. This video is a little clip of a solo I took on the song Johnny Just Drop. Thanks to Bari sax pla...

Scotty P and Bronson perform A Song For You

When my old friend Scott Paynter mentioned he wanted to sing from the jazz standards book, I jumped at the chance. We did 5 songs together this evening, but it was Donny Hathaway's version of A Song For You that touched me the most. Scotty P's voice has been heard all over the world as the lead singer of the group Jah Works. Here's a softer side. For my Nordicles: I'm playing the house Nord Pia...

Thanks for your reply. 👍. Changing the bus routes to 12/34 I can get stereo to FOH desk out of 1&2 and stereo to my QSC monitor in stereo from 3&4 keeping all the effects in play.
Don’t you loose rotary effects on the B3 organ if you just go out in mono?
If you're wearing headphones, then yes. But in a rock/blues club I just don't think it matters. I always track in stereo for organ, piano, and EPs. But it's a judgement call in the live setting. Also, since I posted this video I added a mixer to my rig and changed my opinion just a bit. ua-cam.com/users/shortsGvi1JykW5XE?si=3DExq-Vem4NKJAfK
How do we change the pitch bend range on the NS4 pls ??? Ahh 😮
Nice brother! I broke out a set of brushes and played along on my desk at work :)
ah man! Thanks Jeff. I haven't heard your name in years. How've ya been?
@@BronsonHoover Doing good my brother! Just doing my insurance gig for almost 25 yrs to pay the bills and recording, playing at church, a few gigs here and there and as Mr E would always demand - perfecting my craft :). I'm not sure how it would work but it'd be fun to record something like my brushes on a tune like this and combine them w/ your video
@@JeffWald cool man! That would be fun. Hit me up next time you're in town.
sounding nice
Amazing ❤
Bronson is on another level. That's the only explanation.
Thanks Bruce. You’re way too kind.
Narnia jam!!!!
I love a little Narnia! You're the man Chris. I love looking over and seeing you groove.
Incredibly easy, helpful, fun and quick tutorial! Subscribed! Thank you
Thanks JP!
How can I make an electric piano have both vibration and panorama modulation (like Yamaha Motif)? I can't do it... In the setup you can choose either amplitude modulation or panorama modulation. But I can't believe that such an expensive instrument can't do such a simple thing!
Your Quick Tips are all very useful. How about a Tip which shows how to simulate Electric Guitar Feedback. Two approaches come to my mind: Using samples or sine waves or combining both. And I would like to see how to animate those sine waves to get that feeling of instability which is typical for Feedback.
wow - those are fun ideas. Off the top of my head, the answer to the second question would be to add the "vibe" effect to the program. I know that's not the same as adding mathematical instability to the sine wave, but it would be a simple/quick way to get a little tape effect to it. The quick/easy answer to the first question would be using the drive in the EQ effect. But let me think about this one for a minute. Thanks for the comment!
Bronson. Thank you!! I totally agree. Stereo is not so great for live band setting. The owner manual doesn’t explain how to do this and I thought that 12 was twelve, not 1-2. Haha, duh! Anyway thanks again. Great tutorial style as well. New subscriber here.
Thanks man. I just watched your St. Louis Blues video. You sound great! I played a gig in Chicago last night that requires some boogie woogie and I wish I had a larger vocabulary.
@@BronsonHoover Cheers man I appreciate it! If you need help with boogie and blues piano stuff I have a ton of tutorial videos on my channel (organized into playlists) and I have a website with all free self guided lessons as well called School of Boogie. Beginner to advanced level. Hopefully they will be helpful. A good friend of mine, Erwin Helfer, is in Chicago (I don’t think he plays out anymore). Take care Bronson, good to connect with you.
@@thearthurmigliazza yea man. The blues band I just did a week on the road with has one boogie woogie tune and I need to get better at that. I checked out one of your tutorials yesterday. Great stuff man! I might be hitting you up for a lesson this fall. I see you're in Rhode Island. I'm up your way occasionally. Hope to bump into you.
@@BronsonHooversounds good man! Btw I did a show with the keyboard in mono output last night and it sounded killer. Waaay easier to manage for the sound guy and much better sound overall.
@@thearthurmigliazza cool man. Not sure if you watched my other setup video but I'm making the mono-stereo switch on my Radial mixer now. That way I get stereo for me (which is incredible), and I have a one button option for front of house. It's pretty sweet. ua-cam.com/video/Gvi1JykW5XE/v-deo.htmlsi=YjZHmnoXL_rIbC1y
Brilliant!⭐️
Thanks, was searching forever to find how to send only mono with my stage 4 :)
Different NS4 topic, but if anyone knows a quick answer it will be you! Haven't I seen somewhere that you can Pan right or left for an individual Layer A or B within a Program? It seems like I saw it in some kind of a menu selection controlled with the center screen, but with an almost hidden way to get at it . . . or did I just dream this up in my sleep? It wouldn't be of much use for playing live, since I totally agree with your (other) video about mono-a-mono output -- but could be nice when recording things in stereo. Thanks, //Hank
Hi Broson, congrats for video! And tks a lot for share. I have a Roland RD300 NX and I use (split) 3 sounds but i some situations I need more that 3 ( 5 sounds in a music). I read that Nord can split in 10. Did I understand correctly? Chaaaaaaaaaaaaa !!! 🙂
Midi controller features
Great idea! Thanks. I'll add that to the list the next time I record a bunch of tuts.
A year later and I am still jealous!!! Powerhouse of a keyboard!
Excellent video wow! I’ll be applying that to my new Nord Piano 5+ or 6 when they update it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video Bronson, great edit!
Bronson, You are soooooo Accomodating !
Haha. I have my moments.
I can't thank you enough. I sent the video to 'Stan'. Can't wait to hear the sounds coming from that keyboard. Again, sincerest thanks.
My pleasure! Good luck to Stan!
Thanks guys! - Stan 😊
@@The5thGen You're welcome "Stan." haha! good luck man.
Our keyboardist just got a brand spanking new Nord SP4. There are several songs with sound effects that we use (dockside sounds for the song Sea Cruise, the warble in Fastball's The Way, street sounds for Summer in the City, etc.) I created the WAV files for some of these and passed them along to the keyboardist. He's not clear on how to import those sounds and how to set them up to be ready to be played in a Live performance. Do you think that is something you could review as a (fairly) Quick Tip?
Hey Robert - thanks for reaching out. That's actually pretty easy to do using the Nord Sample editor. One of the reasons I wanted this board was to add samples for the rock group I'm with so I've done exactly what you guys are doing a number of times. I've been really swamped lately, but I'll try to record a quick down and dirty video for you two in the next week or so.

Great and funny 🤣
Hi Bronson ! Thanks for the tips ! I'll bet it sounds Fantastic LIVE ! Have a great week ahead !
How does the piano action feel for the organs? Do you wish it was lighter with a waterfall action, or do you think the action is great for the synth, piano and organs?
Hey Brandon - if you're used to a real organ feel than this will be weird for you. I stack the E6D with waterfall keys on top for my organ stuff. If the organ parts are secondary it totally does the job. I need both boards for most of my work, but whenever I can get away with one board the Stage 4 is the best option I've ever had. And the synth engine is really powerful for how simple it is. Good luck!
🥰🎁♥️🙏🏾
Thanks!!👍
Sounds great... NS4 stereo?
Good question. I added some tech details to the description above. Thanks for the reminder!
Cool
Very cool ending video My church just purchased a stage 4 I appreciate your videos and your little jokes thanks Bronson
I'm glad someone appreciates my dad jokes. haha. Thanks!
Love your tutorials. I tried the copy/paste, but it will copy but will not paste. When pasting to the selected, empty program of my choice, it goes to what ever the sub button is for example shift + paste + whatever program button I selected that corresponds to that program button 5 but it will give me the output information, but will not paste to G15. I hope that makes sense
Thanks Jay. I'm not sure I understand what's happening. Any chance you could show me in a video? Anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks Bronson ! Have a great week ahead !
Can you help with programming the arpeggiator?
The next time I shoot videos I'll make sure to talk about the arpeggiator. I haven't used it in a real-world situation yet, but I stayed up really late one night and got super trippy with it. It's pretty fun. Press all the buttons man! You'll dig into it quickly.
The lack of memory for a £5k machine, is beyond astonishing.
I wish we could connect external drives for added storage.
@@BronsonHoover If you are new to Nord, like me, and download lots of "shared" programs, like me (because you don't understand how to, or have the time to, create them, and are happy to pay $200 for 200 brilliant reproductions/ fellow players shared programmes) you run out of memory after two weeks ! Then nord launch a couple of new programs (Stockholm, soft Piano already) ... and you end up deleting so many programs to make space. Then the "preset" programs start to fail - because they use them. Then your bought programmes fail as they use older Rhodes etc. Early on is very difficult to know exactly what to delete to create space, let alone fix the issues that creates. Truly an astonishing failure of an otherwise superb instrument.
Wowwww! This is so funny. I just did a search for "Nord Stage 4 88 unboxing" and your video populated. Shockingly you picked it up from Chuck's. I'm going in the morning to pick mine up FROM CHUCK'S!!! 🤯🤯🤯 Mile's will be the sales person I talk to. Wow, small world and small internet world as well I guess.😁
Haha. That’s the spot. Enjoy it!
Yeah😱😱😱it’s pretty bad ass machine!!!
Thank you for this video, I will take all the information I can get in my quest to figure out my nord. 😊👍
Thanks! As soon as I have some time to edit I have 9 more videos on the way!
Finally someone who tries to explain the Synth Engine. Keep it up !
quick and easy to understand. thanks!
Great walkthrough in the Synth Department.. Thanks Bronson ! Have a great week ahead..
DX7 rocks man, it made the music much better in the 80's and we are so thankful for that😊
From memory mono almost sounds very single channel based where as stereo has alot more clarity and is split evenly. It almost seems like like mononis a single channnel split forcefully. Which doesnt sound great. But lord and behold for some things people actually prefer mono
I still prefer mono in mid-sized/large venues for the front of house. However, I have to admit I had no idea how much better the piano sounds in stereo. I loved it in mono. I'm over the moon in stereo. I'm feeling very spoiled now.
@BronsonHoover my piano has mono/stereo outputs and that where I first noticed the difference. I guess as tech progresses some audio channels for specific products change dramatically
Thanks for making this video! I personally love to use the White Grand as well with a little bit of dynamic comp, since it just cuts better through the mix.
Yea man! I used the bright setting on the White Piano for my gig last night, and it was actually too bright! In April I'm playing a show at a really nice looking venue, so I'll try to make another set-up video in a real world environment. Thanks for checking in man!
Was is a mechanical or electric problem ?
I'm not sure but it seemed mechanical to me.
@@BronsonHooveroh no good. I have seen some people whining about the build quality. Now, it takes very few people to make a lot of noise but for a keyboard in that price range it must be 10/10.
Still not a Nord owner, but I consistently watch your videos. You might get me to add a Stage 4 to my setup yet.
Now if only Nord would give me a cut. haha! Good luck with the researching.
Bummer about the broken key…Did you get it fixed via factory warranty ?Do you still think it’s a great
Oh yea - I completely forgot to finish that story. I called the sales guy at my local store where I bought it, and he called Nord. They told him to give me a new one and send them the broken one. No arguments at all. Yes - I still love it. I played it through my new stereo monitors tonight for the first time and it was heaven.
I was playing my old triton and I just stopped after 3 minutes and said it’s time for a new board! I’m not a keyboard player but I need some inspiration for new songs. Dude good demo but even better playing ! I’ll admit I pre judged you . BOY WAS I WRONG! Go Ahead Mr. Hoover…You got chops!
Thanks man! I’ve been at this for a minute. This new Nord has really opened some possibilities for me too.
I like how you set up your live set up.. Ready for most anything ! Thanks Bronson ! Thank you for all of your tips and tricks !
Tips Best to have either the compressor button OR the same sound on a second parallel layer (thus increasing volume) on the Layer II button, accessed during the solo by the footswitch pedal.
That's a great plan when you have the available channel
