Vintage MTV back when they refused to play black artists. The legendary JJ Jackson was the only black face you would see in those days. In 1982, Prince had a massive hit double album with 1999 and Micheal Jackson released Thriller. Yet, CBS had to threaten to pull all of its artists' videos if MTV did not air Jackson's videos. Prince had a major hit guitar rock song with "Little Red Corvette". Rick James had crossed over with new wave funk classic "Superfreak" and could get no play. Despite the blatant racism in programming, I loved early MTV. Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Culture Club, Adam Ant. The Clash with all the obscure bands that we would have never seen or heard of made MTV addictive. We knew MTV was only intended for the white audience but we liked new wave. Some of my friends couldn't afford cable so we would gather at a house that had it. The 80s were good times.
