    Hello, Just watched you Scarp 1 video and wonder if you still have that. I have the storm star too for rough weather but it's bulky and overkill for me for some of my trips. Do you still have the Scarp? I had one before but sold it and wondering about a more versatile tent for windy but not crazy weather. Thanks

    • @aledzack82
      @aledzack82 2 місяці тому

      I don't have the any longer Scarp, no. My personal view is if I want a lightweight tent I keep that to summer and shoulder season where the weather isn't so extreme. In the Winter I'm happy to carry the extra weight for the space and security of the StormStar. I think the Scarp can take some very harsh weather, especially with the crossing poles but it's not as robust as the SS to give that piece of mind.

    Great video! I really like this tent and I am favouring this one over the other 4 season contender. I know it's a 4-season tent, but do you think it's suitable for the summer months? Thanks in advance. Mike.

      @@Roadie1980 missed this! It's probably overkill for the summer, but that said in the UK it can be so unpredictable and a hoolie can roll in at anytime. With the outer doors open and the mess inner doors exposed you might get enough ventilation to make it work in summer if you wanted a "do it all" tent.

    I believe the Kuiu Storm Star is a stronger tent, or at the very least equal to the Hilleberg Soulo BL. Advantage is that it is a lot less flappy compared to Soulo BL, in high wind conditions, therefore sleep is more assured. At about half price as well. Oh and made in the USA, all materials to make the tent sourced from the USA as well. Not a China made product unlike the Hillebergs! As for door tie backs just take a couple of pegs and you are sorted in that regard, no big deal.

    KUIU (KOO ee oo) makes excellent camping gear and hunting/hiking clothing. I have their YUKON rain parka and the WPB fabric works well. Great design and build quality. I use it for big game hunting her in Nevada. I have a CANDOIL (out of production) collapsible oil lamp instead of candles. Lighter, bigger, brighter flame, longer burn time.

    • @mandoesmountains
      @mandoesmountains 7 місяців тому

      Hello! There's a definite trick to both, the c-clamp are much easier if you squeeze them in you palm. The pole sleeves you just need to pinch them at the bottom to open them up as well. All tents have their idiosyncrasies and this is no different, but the benefits outweigh them IMO Cheers.

    Hey mate a great review of the storm star. It’s a tent over been looking at. A couple of questions if you wouldn’t mind. The inner is stated at 220cm long I believe. How do you find this length wise ( I’m 6 ft). Are the ends of tent quite vertical. I’ve had tents at 235 long that have felt small due to the slope of the inner. Also the zips under the fly vents. Are they waterproof zippers? I used to have an Allak which leaked through the top vent zips in driving rain. Many thanks 👍

      @mandoesmountains 8 місяців тому

      Hi Gary, Inner dimensions are actually 218cm, but the end walls are quite steep, so I've found no issues at 185cm / 6'1 tall for me personally. I'd have to check the fly vent zips to be sure in all honesty, but there's a nice storm flap to protect them and the inner has a DWR coating as well.

    Interesting video, just subbed. I dont own a StormStar but i camped next to a mate that has one and it's pretty remarkable just how stable they are . I am a big Hilleberg fan and i am on number 6 but i have to be totally honest and say that non of them apart from maybe the Jannu have been as stable as the Storm star but then when you factor in the total weight the Storm Star wins.

    • @mandoesmountains
      @mandoesmountains 9 місяців тому

      Yes I've owned a couple of Hilles, an Unna and a Soulo. I loved the simplicity and the space of the Unna, but in truth, it was susceptible to wind with the big side panels. Soulo is bombproof, but cramped and flappy as hell, not a comfortable night out IMHO. I love Hilleberg as a brand but do feel a lot of their designs are outdated and they rely on their reputation a little bit too much. Storm Star seems to strike a nice balance, it's not perfect (no tent is!) by any means as I showed in the video. But for weight vs strength vs space it's pretty hard to beat at the current price point I think.

    I've been toying with the idea of getting this tent recently, currently up for sale for £655 including a loft and separate footprint. Seems a bit pricey, but looking around at popular competitor 4 season tents - MSR Access 2 (£714), Hillie Saulo (£950) It doesn't seem so bad. The KUIU mountain star 2P also looks like a cracking tent and at £524 pounds for a 3+ season tent - that's also quite tempting.

      @robwithdogoutdoors this would live with most Hille black labels in terms of stability I think, only really possibly loses out in durability of the materials used on the fly. I have the same tent. Only been out in it one night at Coledale Hause between Eel Crag and Sand Hill in the Lakes. Wet and windy night with buffeting caused by being at 600m and between two hills. The shelter performed really well. The panels do not deform so there is less pushing in than in a silnylon tent. There is some noise but I'd say it is no worse than a fabric tent but it is a bit more crisp packety. I thought the same as you about the magnet tie back and said so to Henry. He said if you roll the door then it works fine and I can confirm that it does. If you bunch it up then there's a much bigger chance of it popping open. I thought of getting two bigger rare earth magnets and a length of 3/4" or 1" grossgrain. I was going to make a pocket in each end of the grossgrain by folding it over and stitching the folded edge. If you do this you can have a much stronger tie back without permanently changing your shelter. I've gone back to a mainstream pack and had no problem fitting it in my Exos 48 with kit and food for two nights in it. On the way down I slipped the tent under the brain and it didn't budge. It doesn't feel that much bigger than a rolled up Notch TBH. It is compressible. If I had an Atom Pack (I've had a similar Lightway Elementum) I'd look for a way to carry it on the outside of the pack.

    • @mandoesmountains

      Nice suggestion on the magnet fix for the tie backs! I think if I was going for a longer trip or winter I'd put the tent under the Y strap on my Atom+, or my winter pack has extra room on the sides that would accommodate it for sure.

I'll hang fire for now given your experience and see how I get on. I just DCF taped them on over the original magnets my Notch lie - I always roll the doors on that but it still needed stronger magnets. Not certain why Henry doesn't fit them as standard as so many mention the issue - hardly adds to the weight!!! Often thought about Coledale Hause as a spot to pitch then thought "nah, always too windy". Perhaps I will this year.

    Really good video, thanks. Any updates on that tent? Are you planning to post a long term review? As a potential buyer of that tent and the current hilleberg user I’d like to get her as much info as possible

      I ended up moving it on, not because it was a bad tent, but because I was trying to find a "unicorn" in one tent to do it all. I later realised I'd be better with a heavier tent for winter conditions and a lighter one for summer/spring.

    Gained a subscriber! waiting on the rest of the videos now! Loved the review and truly have me sold on the scarp 1 as my next upgrade! My problem is actually getting it considering they're in such high demand... I saw a little hack involving the noise prone cross-pole clips too, if you attach them to a couple of hairbands they stay noise free and saves you having to remove them when not in use!

    I hope the Scarp 2 gets also all the same updates. I emailed Henry about it just now. He is a top guy.

      @BandofBros I just hope they fix the issue with the crossing poles being a tight fit

      @@mandoesmountains Yes he released a kit with adjustable ties for the Scarp 1, I am sure he will do that for the Scarp 2.

    Actually tarp 1 is the on I have. Another great thing is the way you can message tarp and they are super quick at getting back. Just consider time difference.

    Had Scarp 2 for over a decade. Short guy lines work very well to keep end poles upright. I put silicone lines across the inner floor to keep sleep mat in place. It is by far the best backpacking tent ever. The velcro fastners for the door work very well and have never been a problem. It has been up many Munros with me and survived many storms without cross poles. I have them and never used them so removed flappy fastners on outside.

      Thanks for the feedback Colin. I'll see how I get on with the short end guys but it's more to do with simple geometry. I definitely think the tie backs are an upgrade as well. As for the storm worthiness that's really reassuring to know.

      Hi Thinking about the Scarp 2 as a 2man tent for the Scottish Hills, how do you get on with it

    Hi a couple of questions. how long did it take to come and what duty did you pay ? thanks

    • @mandoesmountains
      @mandoesmountains 2 роки тому

      Hi Jough, took around 5 days to arrive from dispatch. Duty was around £66. Bare in mind duty is calculated based on total order value including shipping, so it depends on what options you go for and what level of shipping you choose.

    Thank you so much for this update review mate!🙏

    Love the updates. On my 2019 model it was easy enough to make the velcro ties not toggle and loop. Loved the sound of your daughter happily playing, was looking forward to her guest appearance. It was actually the road that was more encroaching, maybe a lavelier mic? Good job overall. Last ultimate update imo would be if they added adjustability to the internal mesh vents..going to look at my own Scarp mods video now to see if the door clips are there!

    I’ve not even used my Scarp 1 yet, and the updates are here already 😂🙄 I’m thinking of modifying the internal pockets. As for the other updates, I can live without them. Although I’d be interested to know how the material differs.

    My understanding is that a 45 angle IS the strongest.

    • @SeymourThanU2
      @SeymourThanU2 2 роки тому

      Mine too. I recall reading Henry Shires’ response to the same concern; he explained the engineering maths behind it: basically the 45 angle effectively clamps the pitchlok to the ground. Lessening the angle means the ends lose some stability in high winds. Maybe better to weigh the pegs down instead?
