"The pirates Strombanni and Zarrano were sitting with the mercenary Galbro and Lord Valenso in a bawdy, noisy tavern. The men were sitting at a wine table engaged in a heated debate that soon gave rise to angry yells and threats of swordplay. The count, with an angry wave of his hand, snarled: 'Enough of this bickering. Where, then after all, is this map of the Treasure of Tranicos?' Unnoticed by these seated figures, a giant of a man approached. He was dressed in pirate regalia and his right hand grabbed ahold of the hilt of a great sword in a hitched scabbard. In his left hand he was holding up a yellowed parchment of a map with words and pictures of continents. With a devilish grin he asked "Is this it?" Almost at once the four men leaped to their feet and shouted in unison: 'Conan the Cimmerian!' Conan tore out his sword and smashed it clattering onto the table as he roared "Sit down!" The four men at once sat down staring at the barbarian panting with greed and hatred." - Robert E. Howard, The Treasure of Tranicos from Wierd Tales (1934)

In a Conan the Barbarian comic book story there was a young woman who wrested away a sword from a soldier and started to scamper away with it. Then, she tripped and lost her grip on the sword which landed point of the blade UP and she fell directly onto it - fatally IMPALING herself. Trust no one - but also trust NO THING. The physical world is super-dangerous - from dangerous traffic to dangerous hazards of all kinds.

The pirates Strombanni and Verrano sat with the mercenary Galbro and the haughty Count Valenso in the raucous, bawdy inn drinking cups of wine. Presently, the men took to arguing exchanging vicious insults and even threats to draw swords. Finally, with an angry wave of the hand, the Count asked: "Where is this map of the treasure of Tranicos by any measure?" Meanwhile, his approach unnoticed, there was standing before the table a giant of a man dressed in pirate regalia and with a great sword in the scabbard. His muscles bulged through his costume and he grinned with deviltry as he held up a yellowed parchment in his left hand while squeezing his sword hilt with his right. With a mocking grin, he asked - "Is this it?" The four men leaped to their feet and exclaimed "Conan of Cimmeria!" The barbarian unsheathed his sword and smashed it down onto the drinking table as he roared: "Sit down!" as almost at once the four men sat back down panting with hatred and greed. - Robert E. Howard, The Treasure of Tranicos (1934).

"When Conan was confronted by the 80-foot snake, he held himself as still and unmoving as a statute lest the gargantuan serpent pounce on him. As the beast opened its maw, one of its 6-inch fangs let fall a droplet of venom that splattered onto the man's thigh. The pain was searing - leaving a scar that the Cimmerian bore until the day he died - but he never moved as much as an inch standing as a silent statute until, finally the reptilian beast slithered away into the darkness of the fortress." - Robert E. Howard "The Scarlet Citadel" (1933).

'It was a snake that dwarfed all of Conan's previous ideas of snakes. Eighty feet it stretched from its tail to its triangular head which was bigger than that of a horse. In the dim light its scales glistened coldly white as hoarfrost. Surely this reptile was born and grown in darkness but its eyes were full of evil and sure sight. It looped its titan coils in front of the captive and the great head on the arching neck swayed a matter of inches from the captive's face. Its forked tongue almost brushed his lips as it darted in and out and its fetid odor made him reel with nausea. The great yellow eyes burned into his and Conan gave back the glare of a trapped wolf." - Robert E. Howard "The Scarlet Citadel" (1933)

Historians believe that some ancient cultures simply worked their slaves to death to be merely replaced by newly enslaved captives. The modern practice of hiring and then firing employees after an anticipated time to be replaced by a fresh group - vying at a ratio of 60:1 for each position - of newly hired hands is simply a hearkening back to these bestialities of antiquity.

The bandit Olgerd Vladislav ordered two of his men to chop down the cross on which the Cimmerian hung crucified. Each chop of the axe sent waves of pain into the Cimmerians brain. Then as the men pushed the cross off of its stump the Cimmerian knotted the muscles of his body to absorb the blow. The two men used pliers to pull the spikes out of Conan's ankles and wrists. With his hands freed, Conan seized the pliers and pulled the spikes from out of his ankles. Olgerd barked to the Cimmerian "Mount up on that horse over there some twenty paces and ride with us to camp. Let's see if you can live long enough for some water." - Robert E. Howard "A Witch Shall Be Born (1934)

This song makes me remember a part of the Samson and Dalilah ballet play. I have had this chorus stuck in my head and couldn't remember where it was from until a friend posted this soundtrack in her timeline and it felt like finding a long lost piece of me. This is one of the musical pieces that has struck into my heart the desire to become a musician and enjoy big choral arrangements.
