Helping you find the answers you need for accessible design and construction and a few insights about recovering from paralysis.
Rehab hospital accessible washroom misses the mark.
This rehab hospital accessible washroom was upgraded to add a power door opener and an emergency call system. Both are expensive upgrades and neither were done well. Grab bars in this washroom are not easy or safe to use. See for yourself and read the full story here. www.juliesawchuk.ca/blog/the-worst

Here we are in a local health care facility in a washroom that I have spent a lot of time in.
I've also been on the floor. Yay!
So they've done some upgrades in the past couple of years, but it's still seriously lacking.
And what I want to point out in all of this is that they're not asking the users of the bathroom what needs to happen to make it better, to make it safer, to make it easier. All of that stuff.
So looking at the toilet set up here, I'm going to actually get on the toilet so that you can see.
This grab bar here is farther away from the wall than it should be. And someone's arm could get caught down here and they can actually break an arm kind of easily. Kind of scarily.
This, I'm not even sure what the purpose of this is. I think it might be a headrest. I think it's supposed to be a backrest.
But it doesn't support a person's back, and when you're like me and you have a spinal cord injury, you have no core support. You need to lean against something. So what would end up happening is I end up leaning on the bare plumbing.
Right? Because I have to lean on something. And I flush the toilet while I'm doing that!
It's great having a grab bar on both sides of the toilet.
Like, if you need a grab bar on one side of the toilet, you likely need a grab bar on the other side of the toilet.
So, this is great but it's a terrible setup because if you do a side transfer; if you park your chair here, this needs to be out of the way.
So you have to actually lift it to move it.
And then it locks. So you have to lift it, and it locks in place.
And you have to lift it.
So if you don't have the strength or the balance to do that, it becomes a useless thing.
So the better action is one that just folds down and goes right out of the way.
And it's way easier to do.
The toilet paper is in reach, but I'm reaching.
And this emergency call system is a new addition.
But how helpful is it if you're on the floor?
Not very helpful, right?
So the best position for that would be somewhere down here or a strip, a call strip in two locations so that you could reach it no matter where you were.
The other thing that is lacking here is a place to put garbage.
Whether it's a sanitary product or a catheter, there is nowhere here to do that.
The garbage can is over there.
So, again, do I throw my catheter and hope that it gets in the garbage?
I don't know.
So, lots of room to make improvements for all of the patients who come here that are wheelchair users.
But you gotta ask the right people. So that you get things set up in a way that is actually helpful.
Cheers!

Looking for what an accessible bathroom actually looks like? Here you will see how to best set up the toilet and sink for a universal washroom (designed for disability) in a commercial space, all to Ontario Building Code specifications. You'll also see an actual wheelchair user transfer to, and back from, the toilet using grab bars for support and leverage.

Less Than Accessible Hotel

Rant warning: Here is yet another find example of how the people involved in the design and construction of this "accessible" hotel room do not know the WHY of what they are doing. This was to be a two night stay that turned into a one night stay because of the amount of energy needed to use the washroom features. It was easier to drive home after a full day of work than to stay another night!

@HIExpress did a fabulous job making this room accessible. Of course, there are always things that can be improved, but have a quick tour with me to see why I WOULD go back to this hotel.

Hotel! Good!
Julie are you a paraplegic complete ?
Per the NBC the bottom of the mirror should not be higher than 1015mm or 40 inches at a lavatory.
The NBC and I assume therefore the OBC, mandates that you require no more than 22 newtons or 5lbs of force to open the door (if not otherwise equipped with an operator). Maintenance needs to adjust the overhead closer to be in compliance.
Are you saying this particular toilet is more than the mandated maximum distance from the wall (480mm or 18 7/8", 450mm preferred) from centerline of toilet), or that it's too far for you (and therefore the NBC may be problematic in fact for accessible toilets?
Can you try to pay attention to the brands of automatic flushometers you come across that give you this problem, and report on them on YT. My hope is that you will find that some brand's sensors will be more accommodating to you than others; and I want to know (or confirm) who they are, so I can specify the right product. It may be challenging because, I think only Toto is brave enough to mark their product, and it may be indicative of their performance. Try to identify if its a Toto, or Sloan, or a Zurn, or Kohler, or Moen etc. Thx
Thanks for posting! Inspired as a para to try this!
I am only seeing this now. When it comes to a stroke patient where one side is totally disabled it is vital that transfer is at both sides. All bathrooms that I have been to are only useful if your left side has been affected by stroke.
Take it to your local handyman and have him put a hinge in the handle bar post
I've recently started learning how to basically be an adult wheelchair user since I've been using one on and off since I was a toddler. I didn't need skills like filling up gas and cooking for myself when I was a child. So I've been teaching myself those maneuvers. Where did you get that transfer plate that's attached to your driver's seat? What's it called? I've never seen that before, and it would be so helpful to me.
I guess we are spoiled here in Manitoba - all of the Co-op gas stations (and there are a lot of them in Winnipeg and in most small towns as well) have both Self-Serve and Full-service pumps with an Attendant. Neither my wife nor I are in a chair, but a number of our friends are. Interesting point you brought up about the width of the curbing around the pumps and the height of the pumps- I’m going to check that this weekend.
Thanks for this! Curious architect here, in an ideal situation, would it be better to design a universal washroom with a Type 'A' (both sides lateral transfer layout, with a hinge-down grab bar on both sides of the toilet) , or a Type 'B' (one side lateral transfer, with wall-mounted grab bars on the side and back walls, and one hinge-down grab bar on the transfer side)? There is only enough room in this old building that we're renovating for one Universal Washroom, so I'd like to get it right.
Julie, your video really opened my eyes! Thank you for showing the effort refueling takes, and it would be multiple times harder in snow. How fantastic that your video caught the eye of engineering students at York University.... I can't wait to see what they develop. Kudos to you Julie for all you do!

Perfecto set up! It’s encouraging to see this kind of set up a few times through your video’s, is there no way to petition to the US government to make this set ip mandatory in all accessible bathrooms where possible? Will give me hope to one day visit the US.
This is similar to “changing places” we have here in the UK, although we have a hoist in them too as standard, allowing for the supported transfers of those with quadriplegia and profound physical disabilities, I do like the changing table though, looks very comfortable.
I had to click as I spied the pull down grab bar, the reason I can’t visit the US is because they don’t have a bar either side of the loo for transfers, and that unfortunately goes for Disney parks, including the one in Paris, and certain American cruise lines too, again including Disney 😩…. I live in the UK, and a document M bathroom set up here is standard, so I’ve been spoilt really, I do hope the US adopts this set up…. I mean for the life of me I don’t understand who the grab bar that goes behind the toilet is meant to help 🤷🏼♀️ so great your brother helped ensuring his house was accessible for you ☺️
I'm actually in Canada! Grab bars aren't mandatory on both sides here either, but we're working on it! :)
@@JulieSawchuk keep up the great work!!! I’m actually popping by Canada on a transatlantic cruise in 2024, visiting Saguenay, St. John’s, Quebec City, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottes town, and two stops in the US before returning back to Southampton… Maybe I’ll come across an accessible loo which people have designed by your recommendation 🤞🏻☺️ x
Can u show how u do a floor transfer
Really good and informative video! Thanks for sharing ;)
Thanks for sharing and glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing. You are an amazing woman! :)
Thanks for sharing. I just broke my back and now in a wheelchair. Trying to adjust my new life.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm here as you adjust. It's not easy - thinking of you.
well if you lived In NJ getting gas is no problem since you can't pump your own gas it's done for. matter a fact you can'r do your own gas it's elligal in NJ
That's cool for people that live there. It's very different in my area of the world. There are very few full serve gas stations left in my province. So, it's left to the vehicle owner to do it.
Thanks for sharing this - this video really underscores the point you've made many times that managing energy use is critical. BTW - are there any old-school full serve gas stations around?
N.J .,your gas is pumped for you.
All pumps should have a phone number on them if you need help
Thank you for this!
You're very welcome.
Love this material! Is there a public place you can test this out? thanks!
I had a epic fall when the toilet seat let go at a local mall, thanks for sharing
That's not fun! I've been sharing this toilet seat with everyone since I'm so happy with it!
Awesome! Thank you for the great review!
AWESOME

The toilet paper dispenser is too far from the toilet and I feel it's too high. Shy of ripping it all out, they'd have been better off using the inset tissue dispenser. I also noticed that there's no vertical grab bar on the urinal.
Thank you Julie I only wish there were more contractors or cabinet makers who could do this work. Rosemarie’s drop down upper drawers are exactly what I’m looking for.
No able person has a clue how hard this is. Nicely done!
It stands to reason that only 2 of your wheels have brakes, and if one of those braked wheels lifts off the floor as the chair teeters you're left with *one* braked wheel, not enough to make the chair stay put.
hi Julie - is the floor uneven because you took the tiles out or was it laid that way by your tile setter?
the tiles are being replaced and have not been installed yet
Great video! Thanks for the knowledge! 👊
More to come!
Must have felt very strange, but freeing! Enjoy!
To meet code requirements in some countries the sink needs to be within reach of the toilet. That way you don't have to touch your wheels between washing your hands and cathing.
What's the name of that?
Might be easier to transfer left leg first? How to transport? Does it disassemble, how heavy is the largest part. Rentals or purchase only
Very cool but how easy is it to transfer back to the chair, against gravity and height? My upper body strength isn't the greatest so I don't think I could do it.
Hello from another disabled UA-camr! This conversation and topic of universal design is so needed and important. Many people don't realize how applicable UD is until they see it. Please continue with more interviews of others who live in universally designed spaces. It's so enjoyable and educational. Many thanks!
Thanks Julie for posting this video, sharing your progress and and your advocacy for accessibility.
You are incredibly inspirational Julie. Thank you for sharing your journey. Thank you for your passion to help transform lives and make accessibility available for everyone who benefits from it.
