    Jess, Shortstache recently announced a branded filter that’s a CPL and Mist filter combo. Here’s the video he did announcing it: ua-cam.com/video/o-4g0w_mP5s/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

    So as far as I know, the Polarisation filter takes away 2 f-stops, I think thats what most of the difference is between your unpolarized and polarized fotos, and it takes away certain reflecions if you align it the right way

  • @kimsimpsonphoto
    @kimsimpsonphoto 5 місяців тому

    Tap the edge of the filter lightly with something solid eg the back of a knife and the threads should be back in alignment allowing you to take it off.

    I never use a CPL for portrait work. The perceived DOF gain is due to opening the aperture more because of the light loss, not the filter. CPL filters are great for landscapes - water, clouds etc or shooting through or around glass - cars, street photography etc. Anything a CPL does for portraiture can be achieved through camera settings or easy editing.

    • @rephaelreyes8552
      @rephaelreyes8552 2 місяці тому

      I've been quite confused about that as well. Is there any benefits to using a CPL vs fast shutter speed at a wide open? One benefit I see with using a CPL filter is to remove harsh sun reflection on the skin and bluer sky.

    • @stew_redman
      @stew_redman 2 місяці тому

      @@rephaelreyes8552 If you use a CPL you need to open the aperture more or reduce the shutter speed to get the same exposure as you would without the CPL. If you're aperture is wide open anyway you lose some light regardless. Removing bright spots on the skin is done by using a faster shutter speed, lower aperture or using an ND filter. Skin is not reflective like glass.

    • @rephaelreyes8552
      @rephaelreyes8552 2 місяці тому

      @@stew_redmanBut I just saw a few videos and articles showing how skin glare and glare from glasses are removed by a CPL filter. I understand I can take pictures of a subject in the shade and from different angles, but I only care to explore the possibilities of using a CPL in harsh lighting conditions. And I guess I should have simplified my question: assuming ISO and aperture are the same, would shutter speed affect the IQ of stills or portraits?

    • @stew_redman
      @stew_redman 2 місяці тому

      @@rephaelreyes8552 You would need a slightly reduced shutter speed if ISO and aperture are kept the same. Not really a problem in bright conditions. It doesn't help reduce shine on skin much as skin has far more curves and variance than glass. The only way to deal with skin shine correctly is with proper exposure settings. CPL filters are great for a lot of photography, but the trade-offs outweigh any benefits when used for portraiture for me anyways. Always worth trying to see if it does what you require. We all have different needs and ways of taking pictures

    Rubber band around the filter and gentle pressure is usually enough to get it unstuck. The harder you squeeze the more oval/warped it becomes making it harder to get loose.

  • @nicedward7544
    @nicedward7544 5 місяців тому

    Every photographer knows about them silly. They are not all created equal though. For portrait work you really don't want super clinical anyways. Stop of light gone at least. Most if not all degrade sharpness to varying degrees. I would advise against it unless you have good glass and a good filter. Drop in/clip in filters are the way I go anymore. More expensive but it works for any lens size. Great photos as always!

    You need a gripper (I don't know what they are technically called). They usually have them with the filters at the online stores. UPDATE: Filter wrench.
