TOP 10 (Singles) - My personal preference with commentary and reasoning behind their entries! 1. Kaze wa Fuiteiru 🌸 One of the most meaningful AKB48 song for me. A song to keep moving forward and not have one's soul crushed. This is especially inspirational as it was inspired by the real life disaster of tsunami in 2011 in Japan. 2. Beginner 🌸 Again, another inspirational song in the face of adversity. No matter how tough, we can always start over.. AKB songs are known for their cheerfulness (which I adore as well!) but serious, cool and even heart wrenching tones ones stand out for me just as much and an occassional treat that stands out. Hence my top ones are these rarities! 3. Uza 🌸 This was the song that really pushed the group out if their comfort zone, sonically and choreography speaking. It did not age as well as long reighing hits like 'Heavy Rotation' or 'Koisuru Fortune Cookie' but I think this song deserved more attention (several sister groups also covered this banger). 4. Ponytail to Shushu 🌸 My top ten still deserves the classical and cheerful sounds that the group is known for. Ponytail to Shushu is just so catchy and again got forgotten as the years went on but this was a big hit for them at the time! Also being one of the best summer themed songs they have in my opinion. Also a song that represent the group's prime era. 5. Heavy Rotation 🌸 Some people may grow away from this song because of how overplayed it is. But if I were to pick an AKB signature song this one still stands the test of time as I enjoy the song and music video even to this day and really helps define AKB's signature sound and image (in my opinion). cheerful, colorful, youthful and innocent (for the most part, with 30% of their discography being experimental with other themes genres and concepts). 6. Oogoe Diamond 🌸 Again one of the early AKB songs I had on repeat and another prime song that defined the group's image and signature sound. It's simple yet effective. Also a song that stands the test of time to still remain greatly remembered and relevant today for AKB fans and j pop listeners alike. I also think this hit helped the group remain their steady signature sound and image, even if they wish to experiment with more diversity oogoe diamond was a blueprint for the group's core usual themes and image. 7. Sakura no Ki ni Narou 🌸 I put this song on top ten because it came out at their prime era, it was underrated, it stood out being a ballad, and it's a gentle listen with meaningful lyrics. I wish this song was celebrated more even in today's time. 8. Bokutachi wa Tatakawanai 🌸 A song with again a meaningful message that makes AKB stand out from other j or k pop bands I believe. The line up (sebatsu) although isn't from their prime Era with Paruru being the centre it's meaning, image and unique sound stood out for me in their discography that deserved recognition. It offers something different all other singles didn't get to offer (desire to achieve world peace and abandoned the temptations of hatred and war). and that's why I put it on my top list as a merit for the AKB group. 9. Hisashiburi no Lipgloss 🌸 I'd we are going to make a top ten list then I want to make sure it encapsulates the group well from past to present. This entry represents the modern and present day Era of the group. When hisashiburi no lipgloss first came out in 2022 I can't help bit feel nostalgic. The group haven't done a summer themed song in years and the centre Chiba Erii really embodied my kami oshi MAYUYU with the iconic black hair and twin tail look. The song represented a certain aspect of the group I enjoyed in my formative years and that I miss. So when this song came out it really stood out, leaving a warm nostalgic feeling for fans alike. 10. Nemo ha mo Rumour 🌸 This was a very powerful comeback single during the covid / exiting covid Era for the group. They had been silenced due to the pandemic but when they came back I felt this was the perfect choice to reintroduce AKB to the passes. A mixture of youthful and vibrant sounds the group is known for, yet the challenging and boundary pushing choreography to prove they are not just a bunch of cutesy girlie and can actually dance and stand their own (similar to when uza and no way man came out). Okada Nana was also an excellent centre choice with her newly refurbished image of the bleached pink hair. It was almost a statement that we are back, and bigger and better. Also Okada Nana is probably my favorite modern AKB member (though she too graduated in recent years). This is because she isn't "trying too hard" to be cutesy, but also sings very well, and has a certain charm you can't help but get drawn to .. yet maintains a jpop idol aesthetic unlike Honda Hitomi who I believe was more a kpop embodier that to me never seemed quite a good fit for AKB - maybe a good fit for iz*one becaus ethey are a kpop and jpop hybrid but with AKB and as a core fan hii chans aesthetic kinda sticks out like a sore thumb). So yeah, here are my top ten in maybe not a strict order but songs that deserve the spotlight and rememberance!!
