================ PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT ========================
What is Deadpool all about? What’s the structure of the film? What does Deadpool’s character arc look like? And what’s the overall premise of Deadpool?
In today’s video, I’ll explain and do a complete breakdown of… Deadpool-a film that wasn’t an MCU film when it was released in 2016, but now that Disney has purchased Fox and is releasing Deadpool and Wolverine, technically, this film has become part of the MCU.
[ACT 1]
Deadpool’s opening sequence does an excellent job of capturing the tone of the film.
One, Deadpool is NOT a traditional comic book character…
And two, this is a genre-bending movie…
Deadpool tells Dophinder: “Love is a beautiful thing. You’ve gotta hold onto love. Tight. And never let go. Don’t make the same mistakes I did.”
Which means that Deadpool is a violent, action-heavy, revenge-driven, rom com.
At around the 14-minute mark, Deadpool tells us that this film is a love story, and that prompts a flashback sequence where Wade begins to share his origin story…
One other theme weaved into the film revolves around whether or not Deadpool is a villain or a hero. He tells us that he’s not a hero and that he’ll never be one. But Colossus wants to try and get Deadpool to become a hero and maybe even join the X-Men.
As we head into the origin story flashback sequence, we meet Vanessa-Wade’s love interest, played by Morena Baccarin. At the end of that year, Wade proposes to Vanessa, and she says yes.
But, as Wade tells us: “Life is a series of train wrecks.” And that’s when we learn Wade has terminal cancer. In my opinion, this is Plot Point 1.
Ajax is responsible for Wade being horrifically deformed. Oh, also, because Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead interrupt Deadpool, Ajax escapes.
Wade is approached by an associate of Ajax to recruit him into a study. They promise him that he’ll be cured of his cancer and will be given special abilities.
One: Wade Wilson wants revenge against Ajax for disfiguring him-this is the conflict between Ajax, Wade, and Vanessa, and…
Two: Deadpool, a mercenary-literally the “Merc with a Mouth”-doesn’t want to be a superhero, but Colossus keeps pressuring him to do the right thing.
Wade becoming Deadpool-gaining his powers, being horribly disfigured, and then escaping from Ajax’s lab-that sequence, in my opinion, works as the Midpoint of the film.
After this transformation, Wade initially wants to go back to Vanessa, but his vanity gets the best of him.
Wade meets Al, a blind woman, and they become roommates. She tells him what we’re all thinking: “Love is blind.” Vanessa will still love him even if looks more like a glazed cronut and less like the Sexiest Man Alive. Wade doesn’t believe her.
At about the one hour, fourteen-minute mark, Vanessa is kidnapped by Ajax.
Act 3 brings all the major players together, and they all have motives for facing off against each other:
Everybody faces off at Ajax’s warehouse and a giant fight ensues.
At the end of their fight, Wade tells Ajax he needs to cure him. He needs to go back to looking like Ryan Reynolds or shallow-ass Vanessa will never love him. Unfortunately for Wade, Ajax informs him that there is no cure.
Deadpool kills Ajax, which feels appropriate for his character arc. Wade then apologizes to Vanessa, who’s-understandably-furious with him. But, Vanessa removes his mask and tells him she wants to get back with him, proving Al right: “Love is blind.”
Ryan Reynolds has given us a film that feels like it fits in the MCU while simultaneously breaking a ton of the MCU’s rules. Deadpool is beloved by fans who feel like it really captures the essence of the character from the comics.

    If Social Network was inspired by 'Citizen Kane', do you believe Erica Albright is Zuckerberg's 'Rosebud'?

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 2 дні тому

      Oooh, I love that theory. It actually would have been awesome if they had a toy or a “first computer” of Zuck’s that served as his Rosebud. That could have represented his childhood innocence like Rosebud represented the childhood innocence of Charles Foster Kane. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    That wasn't a spoiler, that's a given. A mercenary is a sicario.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 5 днів тому

      Well, if you haven’t seen the film, you’re not aware that he’s a mercenary (spoiler #1), and usually you’d describe a mercenary as “a person hired to fight for you.” For example, a soldier who’s paid to be a soldier is not a mercenary (a conscripted person.). But, an individual who is not under the employ of an entity, but is hired as a freelancer IS a mercenary. Hence, calling him a mercenary (or sicario) that early in the video would also reveal that, which is also a spoiler. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I heard another theory that Kate was actually considered the villian. Not on purpose, but she represents the 'by the book' approach to fighting crime which really does nothing to stop crime. The heroes are those who circumvent the rules and 'save everyone' despite the bureaucracy that consistently tries to stop them. I guess this film is true art and can be interpreted in many different ways.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 7 днів тому

      That’s true. I would argue that the film’s intent is that Kate is not the villain, because she’s not in it for “global politics” (Matt) or a “personal vendetta” (Alejandro). She’s in it for justice (convicting the people who caused the incident in Act 1 in the home). Granted, the argument others might have is: “You have to be like Matt or America is at risk.” And that is an argument to be made, but I don’t think the film is suggesting that it’s the right conclusion. One thing I love about the film is it just presents the situation without forcing a narrative. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Very interesting analysis but I do wonder if a radioactive speck would take 3 days to kick in. I would think he would have at least been feeling the effects within a few hours.

    Thanks for coming to the same conclusion as me as regards the message of the movie. A lot of commentators say the film leaves it up in the air about whether the means justify the ends, which I always thought missed the bigger picture concerning what the ends actually are. Matt's team are not really stopping drugs coming into the States but rather choosing who brings them in so that they feel they have some semblance of control, which is insane because I don't remember the dominance of the Medellin cartel ever being something the US was happy about at the time. In fact, they were the boogeyman. It's definitely about the US wanting the feeling that they are in control despite it not being true, at all. It's a very human reaction. We all kid ourselves all the time that we are in control of things we are not, it's just reduces anxiety, whether it's true or not.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 10 днів тому

      Yeah, I think a lot of folks also try and take their own ideology and try to warp the film to fit that. But we’re definitely supposed to see all this through Kate’s eyes. And she is basically like: “I was in this for justice, but this isn’t justice.”

    One thing I found odd was when the expert failed to eliminate the killer because he was still abroad, she would of known out of basic instinct that he would take revenge because the brute assaulted his lady friend. So I find it very strange she didn't take better precautions like leaving town to avoid confritation. When they were at the table at no point did the expert remove her hands from the table, so the bottle must of been poisoned beforehand.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 13 днів тому

      Yeah, The Killer also notes that. My take on that is: 1) She’s tired of the lifestyle, and 2) She knows that he’ll find her eventually. I think she knows he’s following her, so she goes to the restaurant on purpose because one of the methods she can use is the bottle (which, as you noted, already has the spec).

    You keep saying Kate breaks the law, but she never wants to, she is pretty much helpless. Even her boss (Andrews guy from Titanic) convinces her that the mission is okayed from higher authority.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 19 днів тому

      I definitely agree that she doesn’t want to, but she still has agency and does choose to break the law. She joins the team despite her reservations. She goes along with the mission to Mexico despite her knowing it’s out of her jurisdiction. She even chooses not to kill Alejandro at the end. In fact, the film is very much about Kate realizing that law enforcement’s emphasis on justice doesn’t work in the context of how the American agencies work abroad.

  • @decadepasts

    This is a stupid theory that is not supported by anything. Using a fast acting poison would have saved her life but instead she was saving a radioactive spec just for the right occasion and managed to slip it on the glass without anyone including the audience noticing ha ha ha Get real. This is so dumb. This is the dumbest theory I've ever heard ha ha ha ha The eye twitch at the end of the movie is much like what Travis does with his rearview mirror at the end of Taxi Driver. The ending seems to have some kind of finality. Like the main character has changed and is going to move on. But not so fast. There's something that indicates that nothing could be further from the truth. That's what the eye twitch indicates. He will kill again. He is still The Killer.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 20 днів тому

      In order for me to consider your feedback, you would need to pick the evidence from the film that I cited and explain how that ISN’T evidence for the conclusion. Currently, your argument is fairly weak as you have resorted (rather than addressing the argument itself) to attacking the conclusion and me. That’s not an argument. The only thing you present is “the time horizon of the effectiveness of the poison.” But there’s plenty of evidence to counter your point. 1: The Killer himself says that facial necrosis is slow and painful. 2: The Expert wouldn’t pre-arrange a fast-acting poison at a restaurant because it would clearly implicate her as an assassin. 3: She’s not trying to save herself in that moment. Later, we see she has a knife in her hand… THAT’s her backup for saving herself. Your concerns actually enable more evidence. Now, your separate “theory” isn’t necessarily bad. But it excludes all the evidence in my video yet doesn’t counter that evidence nor does it provide any evidence of its own. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Absolutely hated this movie. You glossed over the execution of the innocent and helpful taxi driver, and ignored the colonialist undertones of the killer’s relationship with his “loyal” girlfriend and her loyal-servant brother. Brown, black, and female people are dispensible, yet there is - inexplicably - mercy for the white billionaire who WAS INDEED to blame for the entire mess. The cartoonish, endless, unrealistic fight scene from which the killer emerges with nary a scratch or broken bone. The storage units filled with passports, drivers licenses, and credit cards that never expire. This movie started out really strong, but quickly ran out of budget and reverted to boilerplate action-movie cliches and pseudo-intellectual drivel aimed at the “teen-aged boys with immature prefrontal cortices” market. I do like your take on the ending, though.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 26 днів тому

      I actually think that all your points actually reinforce the main message of the film. Ultimately, we’re supposed to realize that the world is harsh, brutal, and unfair. And that’s why the Killer’s mantra ultimately fails. Because we’re not supposed to be rooting for him. So, I’m a little surprised you didn’t like it. Did you feel like they were making him out to be too much of a hero that we’re rooting for? Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I like that it’s the boring water and land swindle, that makes it seem so real, and mature- no Hollywood script would had been so complex. …and then to add incest to the story- we have gone to places that are overwhelmingly disturbing. The ending… Crushing- such a punch to the soul. You’re right- everything we needed to know was there in the beginning. If you’re rich and powerful, you can get away with murder, and get everything you want. Jake knew better, he got involved and forgot his own words- but everything was stacked against him.

    Is it possible for anyone to get the cover of the book on the hardcover? Not in a book jacket but on the physical book? I printed through KDP and that was the way the hard cover was done and I really liked it. But with IS I've just seen the book jacket.

    The premise is stated in the last meeting between Alejandro and Kate; "this is the land of wolves now." The Sicarii were not legal entities, but were fighting a just war. There are no "illegal moves" in a street fight when your life is on the line. The same is true when facing an enemy who knows no rules. You either die fighting by the rules, or you overcome and survive.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork Місяць тому

      Yeah, and then the question becomes: Are Matt and the agency actually fighting a just war? In this case, if it’s avenging Alejandro’s family, the answer is a probable “yes” (even though he murders women and children, which is going too far into an “eye for an eye”). BUT, if we’re talking about the agency taking down one cartel only to reinstate the Medellin Cartel… that gets a little dicier. Excellent point!

      @@HowStoriesWork Good point... But as Matt says, "...until somebody finds a way to convince 20% of the population to stop snorting and smoking that shit, order's the best we can hope for." The US has not the political will to go to war with Mexico or those citizens who are the cause of the market. In the face of that, "order's the best we can hope for," and, to the majority of both American and Mexicans, order, instead of the chaos and death they currently face, is probably about as just a goal as can be hoped for.

      100%. That’s what makes the film so powerful. The concept of how the individual perspective (Kate’s) can’t accept the need for this gray area, whereas the overall system must do something and the gray area is the “best” solution that can currently be found. Really great stuff!

      @@HowStoriesWork I do think that it's about Kane's longing for a simpler life. In terms of story, it's a fascinating look at how wealth and power don't equal happiness. I would agree that there are themes about control within the text. Having viewed it for the first time a few weeks back, it is an interesting enough film to revisit and dig deeper into now that I know a few of the beats.

    I definitely always took Alejandro to be working for the medallin cartel, as the CIA has been partnering with organized crime since their inception. Lots of folks “work” for the CIA, or are assets. Seemed like that’s the best explanation for his family being murdered. But I guess him being a good guy prosecutor before works as well. Kinda weird he’s a tier 1 operator now, but makes more sense than what I had first thought

      You know, they’re vague enough about his origin that I feel like he could have easily been involved in the Medellin Cartel. I need to watch Day of the Soldado and look for more clues. That’s gonna be one of my upcoming videos.

    Great analysis of my favorite movie! 😃 I actually never caught that Guillermo Diaz was nothing but "a gift" to Alejandro from his friend - and that Matt never cared about his "potential intel" because they already had enough to go on and verify said intel - later. BUT that killing/torturing/imprisoning Guillermo Diaz -> Was PART of shaking Manuel Diaz's tree. = Like a "buy 2, get 1 free" special deal 😅😂 And I think Matt Graver would actually call it just that in his completely casual mood. - However I did THINK I caught you in a mistake as well: 12:45 - you call Fausto Alarcon the TOP DOG which it's said that he is not. Back at the first inter Agency meeting, they called him the number 3. guy (or believed to be) and in the second Sicario movie, the girl Reyes knew of "The grieving lawyer" from her father who was ranked higher than Alarcon. = I think I'm right on that one, but it IS a bit hard to remember everything exactly as it was said (or written) so I may still be wrong 😃

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork Місяць тому

      That makes sense. I feel like Matt calls him something like that in the meeting… but it’s been a while since I studied the film. Even knowing how the real cartels work, in that the guys at the top are SUPER undercover, it would make sense that Alarcon isn’t the apex. But maybe Matt and the inter-agency team are referring to him that way as he’s the target? I’d have to go back and verify that, though. Thanks for watching and commenting! I’ve been asked to do a video on Day of the Soldado, so stay tuned for that one!

    You're so right. When the waiter 1st came and asked if he could bring the menu, she responded (paraphrasing): "no, thank yo. A flight of whiskeys. And bring *MY* bottle please." Keyword "MY".. Which means the expert had a bottle ready for such a moment. The killer in fact took a shot of whiskey with her.

    The twitch was a sign that he can't settle into normal life.When did the expert get the chance to plant poison on the glass when he did'nt show any intentention to drink.She was not expecting to see him and im sure the waiters wer'nt in on it.Also i'm expecting a part 2.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork Місяць тому

      I had another commenter mention that most assassins carry an anti-poison serum, which still leaves a Part 2 on the table. But, the twitch is for sure necrosis. Because there’s no way the line about “painful facial necrosis” would be so descriptive without it mattering later in the story. The simple reasoning for The Expert is that she knows he’s coming, identifies that he’s following her, and one of her methods of assassinating people is to take them to that restaurant. Notice she says: “Bring me my bottle.” It’s all pre-planned. That’s my take. I’ve heard other takes, but I haven’t heard one that makes more sense yet… 🤷🏻‍♂️
