I stumbled across this threshold spasm yesterday. While I practiced finger vibrato. Thank you for your excellant vibratodemonstration, Miss Danielle! It seems to me you also had an excellant bow hold demonstration involving placing the thumb between the hair of the bow and stick like a football. I am practicing every day now on vibrato incessantly repeating Miss Benedettis beginning vibrato lesson. I augment her lesson with the knock,slide, rock by Heather and her method. Terrible videography and editing. Terrible perspective and super annoying continuously switching between two horrible angles. And what’s with the subtitles? A great and valuable lecture completely ruined 😡

The opposite is true, too many professionals have too wide of a vibrato and it is overdone. Having beautifully integrated vibrato that is not wobbly is the ideal sound. The so-called "widening" or "opening up" of vibrato often leads to wobbly vibrato. Oscillating between two notes is recipe for wobbly vibrato.

Why do I feel like I have a fat thumb? If I hold my thing in the gap between the frog and the leather there isn’t enough room to pivot. I have to move my thumb under the leather instead. Is that ok?

What an amazing performance from Andrew and perfect analysis from you. I used to play with the weight of the bow only, with any pressure, only horizontal movement. When I switched to Viola suddenly everything starts to go wrong... So I added vertical pressure and started to squeeze and kill the sound. This bread sound concept, and to hug the bridge with an efficient and relaxed movement it's priceless.. And a must to have this projected sound. I'm still with a small sound, but now much better then it was on violin.

So many genres of music, early music folk and traditional music, I believe vibrato should only be a form of ornamentation or embellishment not tone production like romantic music.

When, I first heard the beginning of this video it sounded like an orchestral string section playing, then becoming to realise it is solo violin. The acoustics of the hall is massive.

This channel needs more recognition. I have looked around youtube for advice, this channel is the best place next to Julia Bushkova. It is like a masterclass for all levels.

Why can't they have mediocre violin class for people who play mediocre and need actual technical advice. It's annoying to see people playing perfectly already that don't need advice. At this point it's just interpretation advice. Well if everyone played it with the same interpretation would it be interesting?

Thanks for your video. I play violin mainly and also viola. Recently I played viola (I am lucky to have a great instrument) in a chamber orchestra playing Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 which starts with the violas with a noble beautiful slow theme accompanied by the wind. There was only 3 violas (2 of us strong players) and I got stopped and told to NOT USE VIBRATO! Absolutely finished me since I am very proud of making a rich sound on the viola when (rarely) we are given the tune. What is the point in playing if you don’t allow passion. I left the orchestra after that concert, for various reasons really, because they appointed the conductor permanently. And I could see it wasn’t ever going to work. Sad. I am pretty sure I have a great vibrato and know when to use it and not use it. Roger Norrington famously asks his players to not use vibrato when playing baroque music. I understand BUT you should allow players (including professionals) to express themselves. We are not robots!

Vibrato is not a natural movement for humans. I've known too many elderly violinists that regretted playing the violin cuz it wrecked their joints. What a way to normalize abuse. Actually Heifetz couldn't move his right arm because his muscle detached from his bones from all the Bowing in his life.

Now if you will in corporate Teflon plumbers tape around thumb you will have less friction and be able to demonstrate your concept even better!
