      Ha Ha... Yeah Buddy! And consider the water bill at the end of summer keeping the grass green and flourishing. My backyard garden has just a little lawn and I pride myself in keeping it like a putting green. There is something sweet about walking in nice lawn with no shoes or socks! My front parking strip goes brown every summer and bounces back in the fall when the rain starts up. Yes, you can do this. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Eric and Bev are my neighbors just a block away from where I live. I have given them ideas over the years. It is a work in progress but as you can see. They have created their own outdoor room oasis. A place where they can get away and just relax in nature. The sound of the water trickling down the stream blocks out the noise of the HVAC unit at the corner grocery store. Ha Ha... All good! Thanks for your comments. Jeff

    Hi Neigbor! I love your videos! I met you last week walking my pups and we chatted across the street. I live just down the hill on 42nd. Question about a north facing food garden. With the little space we have, we would like to do a raised bed garden. Unfortunately, we only get north facing sun in that spot. Is there anything we could grow food wise? Anything that would grow that isn’t food?

      One thing to consider, growing any garden in a "crowded" manner helps to reduce the space where weeds will have an opportunity to germinate and take hold. I have very few unwanted weeds growing in my yard. All because there is little open soil areas for them to grow in. Just a thought....

    • @gardeningwithjeff3072
      @gardeningwithjeff3072 2 роки тому

      Hi, It would depend on how much lawn you have to dethatch. If you have a lot, you could rent a dethatching machine. If just a little like me a stiff rake works great. If you have any moss in the lawn before I would thatch I would apply a product to eliminate the moss along with an application of lime to change the ph of the soil. Moss prefers a more acidic ph where lawn likes a more alkaline soil. After a couple weeks when the moss is dying off you can lift it as you thatch. Then come in with the grass seed and top dress with peat. An application of fertilizer just after the grass seedlings pop would help but be careful not to overdue the fertilizer. Grass seedlings are tender and you don't want to burn them with to much fert. Does this make sense? This is the perfect time of year to do all of the above. Questions welcomed anytime. Happy Gardening...

      Hi Angela, My spirea magic carpet has seeded it's self but interesting enough most of the time the seeds do not sow true. I end up with mostly some green leaf variety. Those starts go into the compost bin. ha ha Japanese maple seeds are notorious for not sowing true as well. That is why most are grafted. I am of the opinion that if a plant or tree doesn't work for you, replace it with something that will.. I'm happy to answer any question you might have. Welcome, Jeff

      Hi Samantha, Keep in mind that moss loves acidic soil. Lawn grasses prefer a more alkaline soil, so there is the challenge because our PNW soils tend to be more acidic. An application of lime will help change your pH. You will need to do another application in the early spring as well. The fall is the BEST time to reseed your lawn. Just before the rain season hits and we still have warmer temps. You got this !Happy Gardening, Jeff

      Hi Back,,, This is off Hwy 410 Chinook Pass at Lake Tipsoo. Naches Peak trail. Just outside the Mt Rainier Park boundry there is a parking lot off the hwy. You will be about 5,000 ft elevation here. This is the Cascade Crest trail that runs from Mexico to Canada. Take the trail south. Cross over the Hwy on the bridge. This trail cuts west after you pass the first little lake and goes back into the park. I like going this direction because you start higher and there are hardly any switchbacks. I'm an old guy, haha. I was a back country ranger here in 1977 and I know all the good hikes. There will be fantastic views of the mountain and you will love the flower fields. Blue huckleberries will be eatable. Take a zip lock to bring some home. Lake Tipsoo is on every calendar, you'll recognize it. Don't worry about bears. You might see deer, elk, mountain goat and marmots in the rock screes. Take water and bug spray. Dogs are not allowed on trails in the park. OK just outside the park up to the first little lake. If you go north on the crest trail it's an easy hike into Sheep Lake. Enjoy!

      Abutilon has the coolest flowers. In the PNW we can keep it through the winter if it doesn't get too cold. Best if kept in a container here. That makes it easier to bring into the house when temps dip. Fun!
