@@laserfalcon patience for one. I would not recommend chemicals, even if they say they work safely on fiberglass. You can use sanders and such but be careful as to not dig into the parent fiberglass. We now have lasers that will take everything off down to the fiberglass. I am to show this in an upcoming video.
@@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV will the lasers damage the fiberglass?
@@laserfalcon you can if you try, but I was able to remove paint and filler without damage. And once the paint and filler is off the reflectivity of the fiberglass doesn’t really allow the laser to work anymore
For this video the camera placement is too high so we couldn't see the actual work.
Sorry, I do it all by myself
W❤W aahsome looking classic bowtie 4life re$toring my 2 door coupe can't wait for it to be completed🙏😎😇
1966 good year 🇺🇲
I cannot thank you enough for your time and effort in posting this extremely useful and rare video. Nobody addresses the best way of using the 68-9 coupe repro quarter skin for a convertible as it is the only option available. Most body shops cut the skin in half, utilizing only the mid-section down of the quarter skin and that is not as clean as your installation. Excellent job!!!!!
I’ve seen alot of how to videos doing some of these projects and find myself yelling at the tv because people are getting shown bad information. I’m glad it helped you! Thanks for watching
Who makes this quarter panel?
Honestly not sure Customer already had them
Thanks, not too many videos of 68-69 cutlass quarter panel skin installation. Very thorough detail, however the method of trimming the new quarter patch skin is not explained or shown. Is the new panel trimming done off the car? Further, the method of flanging the new panel is discussed at length, however I'm confused if the new panel sits underneath the existing quarter panel or sits overlapping in creating the flange. Great dedication to the work, however I think a couple key areas are not addressed. Thanks
Making these videos are not easy and take a lot of time, I try my best to explain every step. I’m not sure what you are saying I missed, I try to show every step as it happens
Great job. Would love to have seen you doing the stripes. Did you use a stencil or freehand measurements? Thanks.
Stencil and diagram provided by my customer. 442 people are very funny about this stripe being correct
@@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV Thanks. Lol, I’m guilty of that when it comes to the 68 442. I see that the stencils areavailable. Did you lay the stripes first or the color first?
@@videojoe2005well the template was actually cut to go on after the maroon was down. Whenever doing a striped car, I always paint the stripe color first, paint a a coat or two of clear(for a barrier coat), then mask the stripe and paint and clear the rest of the panel. Also I used measurements from a fisher body book as well
@@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV Thanks again, I have the same exact car and will be referencing your videos while I’m restoring mine.
@@videojoe2005glad to hear the videos helped in any way! Good luck with your project!

What ever happened to this Chevelle?
The Chevelle is still at the shop, almost finished.
Any more vids on this car?
@@freshfarms5491 I have some more but then went further on the project and stopped recording. I’m going to try to make a video once it’s closer to being totally done and talk about everything I did
Grt job on a truly unique car. The gaps from the factory on these and most cars of the day were truly not the best. I am in the process of aligning all but began with a body lift and new body mounts, then quarters, and now door pins and then inner doors and jambs. My initial judgement of any car begins with do0r jambs and seams. Rocker panel detail is paramount. I like to drive my cars, so its one shot paint with factory style peel. Urethane is great for simple non metallic colors and base clear for more showy metallic. Find the right painter and a sophisticated booth and save tons of money in sanding and buffing...these cars were lacquer and never presented as show quality as they drove away from the dealerships...but hey as you say ........each to his/her own taste. Keep the technical stuff coming and best of luck pleasing the customer...lay it out straight and your shop will always be humming. My best client said....just a little more right! Do right do it once!
If you would wake up a bit before you begin recording your video and stop licking your lips and sucking on your teeth, the video could be about 25 to 30% shorter.
Thanks for the feedback. I went to your channel to see how your videos looked, hmm, I don’t see any. Ok thanks
Is gun clean up with soap and water?
No, Zolatone requires lacquer thinner or acetone.
I'm doing identical sheet metal work on a 65 ss convertible. Parked for 33 years. It turned into a frame off restoration. I'm 50% done with the restoration. Hope to have it finished by next summer. Enjoying your videos. Hope you finish your project before I finish mine. Thanks
I like the other cars you're working on, I've had a 442 also & liked. But I'm hoping to watch the progress on the 67 Chevelle. Thanks!
The 67 Chevelle is the best muscle car ever to me! But they go through a lot. It just takes a lot of time. They make pretty much any panel you need. If you have the money! The hood must be an SS though the car just doesn't fill right without one! I wish I could help! There's nothing I miss more than my 67 SS Chevelle I had for years. Mine was, 67 Corvette yellow with A touch of purl, 396 with a 4-speed V gate shifter, Black diamond tuck interior & bucket seats & console. At the time it was the fastest car in town. Of course, the cops thought so to, thay can sure make it hard to keep the car! Good luck.
Thanks for the comment. I’m Sorry I haven’t followed up on this project. This car at this moment 10/23, the project is nearly finished as far as what I am doing to it. I ended up basically replacing every single exterior panel on the body. Maybe when I’m all done with it I’ll make a follow up. Thanks for watching
Same process for me on my 66, glad I made the decision to replace with AMD panels. My car is now 8 years old and in pristine condition. I recommend smooth firewall panel also. Many awards with my car and very fortunate to have a great body guy and painter.
I’ve done a bunch of huge panel replacement jobs and sometimes at first seems like a lot but long term it make the entire process easier. I have not update this job in a while but it is almost all painted and put together. Looking at overall costs, panel replacement over fabrication and body time makes the job that much cheaper. But not all cars have this much panel availability
I had a 1968 back in 1989 i like that year the best 🇺🇲
I had the exact same car in the early 80's.
Thank you. Been working a 65 ss convert. Quite a learning experience.
Glad to help! Good luck with your project!
Great job, as a matter of courtesy and respect, I would never tell you that something was done wrong or the wrong color was used unless there was a safety concern. Clearly not an issue on this car. I am interested in the exterior color you used, is it Toyota dark metallic red by chance? I used that on my car and have seen other hot rodders use that color too since it has a lot of metallic and really comes alive in the sun.
I’m not offended by anyone who suggests things I’ve done wrong, maybe because I’ve heard it so many times and I don’t care, what my customers say is what I care about. As for the paint, it’s a paint formula I got directly from AKZO Nobel based of the code on the car
Thanks, very nice to know the color I chose is close to an original GM color for this year 442. Keep up the great work and the videos too.
Thanks for the detailed videos. I’ve owned two 68 442s and enjoy seeing the great work you’re doing to restore this back to original.
So a closed end rachet wrench or one with a slight bend will work with the fender on?
Adjusting a door with a fender on with most old cars is nearly impossible
I worked as a automotive painter for over 35 years also worked for dupont as a rep and paint technician my job was to put out fires I would go to all the different shops and dealerships and trouble shoot problems and back in the 80s they had all the G.M. peeler s all cars that had bad paint from the factory and I had guys at dealerships doing warranty work and I would get calls everyday about problems they were having I would tell the painters you have steps to take that need to be done and if they are not right or it won't be covered by the warranty if you have steps 1 through 10 and you need to stick to that not 1 3 5 7 9 I told them once the car is striped it needs to be blown off with clean air and don't touch it with your greesy hands wipe it down with metal prep and have a dry lent free rag and go behind it and dry so you don't leave any ŕèsadew on the car tack it off with a take rag spray a coat of 615 and 616 on it before doing any body work this took the place of the zinc chromate the factory used for many years if there is no body work to be done then you can put the sealer on it if there is body work ðo it put 6¹5 and 616 on any bare metal then prime the body work then you can block out the body work and reprime for final sanding after it is all sanded then you can whipe it down with prepsol or tar wax and greese remover and wipe with dry rag then you can spray your sealer tack that off then paint if you flow those steps your good as far as the warranty goes if you skip any of these steps that's when you have problems like paint blisters peeling if you try piling the paint or clear on that's when you trap solvents in the paint and end up with what they call solvent pops fisheyes are normally caused by touching the car with bare hands the oil in your skin will make mess out of a nice paint job also what you mix the paint and clear in . And absolutely know WD-40 in the paint shop or silicon I've seen WD-40 sprayed 60 to 80 feet away and ruin a paint job because it travels through the air also so dealerships offered a clear coat protection and if it was like Z Bart the whole car will fisheye. If you fallow these steps your job will come out right as long as the painter knows what he's doing. I treated every car like it was going in the world of wheels my boss would tell me all the time this one is not going in the world of wheels I just ignored him because my reputation was on the line and if you left 1 pin hole or chip he would point it out....lol the only thing I haven't painted was a helicopter and painted everything from straight enamel lacquer acrylic enamel base coat clear coat to Imaron to Imaron 5000 besides all types of industrial coating and marine coating. I love paint work I start at my first body shop at 14 years old and when I was 16 I was the youngest painter ever at a dealership in New Orleans Louisiana that was in 1977 I'm 62 years old now.
Hi I just subscribed to your channel, I have owned my 1968 442 Convertible since 1986. Have a channel of my own with my car there @ Chuck's GM garage. Having issues with my convertible top going down and up like hydrolic issues.

@@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV the car has been sitting for a very long time, I have been doing some research and going to try and fix it this weekend. How bad could it possibly go ?
@@chucksgmgarage1116 make sure you have a strong battery too
@@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV brand new yesterday
@@chucksgmgarage1116 ok, good start, with the car not running, the pump draws a lot from the battery. If you can even keep the battery hooked to a battery charger too will help
Wow
Also, what tip do you like to use in your primer gun to apply Zolatone spatter paint?
2.0 or larger, a rocker shutz gun works too but sprays a lot of material. I use my 3m accuspray with pressure cup, but that setup is expensive , but I use it for many applications. 2 quarts will be enough, I always put down a good base color for easy coverage with the zolatone
How much Zolatone is used to spatter a big trunk like your Caprice? I've read that a quart should do it but that seems like it might not be enough. What do you think?
Wow boring
Cool thanks for the view and the reply, it all helps! Stay strong
This car is pretty much exactly my project car; same color, same white convertible top, same white on black interior, only difference is mine is in much worse shape and is the 2 barrel configuration with a 3 speed in it. I will definitely be referencing the videos on your 442 when I try doing things to mine
Thanks for checking us out. Hopefully what we did here can also help you. Good luck!
Very curious about the vacuum power door locks.....they appear like a factory set up...was thinking they were a 1969 thing? Any idea if these were added? or are they listed on this cars option list?
Can’t say for sure, I think these are factory
Awesome job. Beautiful work
Won’t it all change when you put the glass and internals back in? It’s gonna add weight. I always align these fully loaded
Very true, but if you have figured out how to align the empty door, you’ll easily be able to adjust the door once the glass is in. In my experience I have rarely had to make many changes once the guts are installed but some doors are different then others. And of course thanks for watching, I do hope it helped in some ways.
the result looks fantastic
I like watching these videos of a car being taken apart and made new again. But if it was my car I would not go with moderrn things like fuel injection & brake kits, I'd want to do it with all the parts that were on the factory build sheet.
The car didn’t have the original engine anymore and the original carburetor. The customer was on the fence about making the change and only did it because the matching numbers part was basically gone. If you look, current car auctions are drawing bigger numbers for resto mods then all original cars. It comes down to what the individual wants, we’ve done it your way too, look at the corvette we did or the 66 impala
What color is this
Excellent. Adjusting long Gm doors has been a nemesis. Tape and pivot. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thanks for watching, glad to help!
Great info. Just finished spraying exterior of 69 Biscayne and it’s trunk time. This “spatter” has grey fleck not aqua like original but may go with grey as well as Zolatone doesn’t offer aqua fleck. Thanks for your video. Well done. Cheers
I’m no expert but have had good results with my methods, thanks for watching and I hope it helped
Where’s the finished product?? Over 16mins and nothing

Good video!! To our didn't get off track. So many others give a lot of information not related to their projects. I'm will definitely be looking to see other videos from you on this project. I did the same thing to my 67. Although I didn't have to do the roof panel. But front an rear windshield channels. And also the complete floor. So I will definitely be watching your process on this Chevelle
Thanks for posting! I need to adjust the driver's door on my 65 Impala. I was hoping I wouldn't have to remove the fender, but if I do, I'll just take my time...
Well depending on how bad it’s hanging, you could also possibly shim between the door and the hinge
If you can remove fenders do it.
@@dukeallen432 yes! Unfortunately gm cars are designed in a way that you can’t just remove the fenders, it usually means taking the entire front end off. Fords are better in this example. Fenders can come of without hood removal etc
Awesome man! 😎
Great video, great car, great work. That car really deserved to go to you for the restoration repairs. While it looks like whomever painted that car did not block it very much or at all is tragic for the customer. The variation in the panel alignment at the top of the door/quarter is common on these cars and can vary substantially from the left to right sides. It seems like a story is told about how different the stampings were and how different the line assemblers were from left and right. Many of the waves or depressions in the sheet metal are normal for the manufacturing processes at the time. Everyone loves a laser straight car and I tend to think that a balance should be made between fixing damage and restoring as built condition while reducing some of the unfavorable tolerance stack up. Keep rolling....
Thanks for the comment, it’s funny, as a body man I’ve heard old timers say to me, “cars aren’t meant to be straight, they were made wavy”. Maybe that’s true but in 66, cars also didn’t have the finishes they have now and the waves wouldn’t show. These days most people see perfect gaps and perfect finishes and that what they want, unless you’re into the whole pebble beach concours thing where cars have to restored like a shitty factory built them.
what color is that?
Lemans blue
if i was the owner,i wouldnt accept that car until engine was painted correct color. it looks horrible.
Good thing your not, thanks for stopping by
Mr.Dillinger, what is the correct color for the engine ? I believe 350s to be gold, the 400s to be bronze, the 455s to be blue and Hurst to be red in mid-size cars. I think this is a 400 c.i.d. engine to be bronze color.

Have you watched any other videos i posted, never mind, your negative comment was more worthwhile
The infamous "mystery" motor of Nascar. They kept it a secret until its debut, and it dominated until the hemi was approved.
I have a 65 Jetstar convertible that I ended up cutting the cowl area out of a parts car ( 66 Delta 88 vert) and did my best to cut and fit then attempt to weld. I'm not a pro but it turned out fairly good. Took pictures of the process as it was a project that someone else cut out the rust. I'm amazed that new parts were available, I lucked out finding a rust free cowl. Good luck with your car.
I understand that the product is used straight out of the can without reduction but is Zolatone oil or water based? Have you ever used the oil based spatter from The Parts Place? If so what do you think of it?
Yes, I used that on the 68 cutlass featured in some videos. Basically the same product. I say stay away from trunk splatter aerosols.
