THE UNQUIET GRAVE - A ghostly love story! - Roud 51 / Child 78
#FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic #FolkHorror
I have been beset with plague. So I didn't get to do anything with this song - what you're hearing are preliminary scratch tracks to test the key. But the horrors persist and so must I.
For a lot of good info on this song, check out this Mainly Norfolk wiki on it: mainlynorfolk.info/lloyd/songs/theunquietgrave.html This is a lovely song with a really sweet sentiment and it's in Folk Horror Month because it is entirely a ghost story - but, to my mind, it is the sweetest kind of bittersweet love story. A man mourns his departed wife for a year and a day and she rises from the grave and tells him not to waste away mourning, but rather to live his life until death is actually upon him. Also, she's tired and he's keeping her up with all his moanin'. (I kid.) Sort of.
As you'll see in the video, there are two tunes used for this popular old song - the ballad (as sung by The Dubliners & Luke Kelly) and The Star of the County Down tune, perhaps more popular now due to recent use (as in Penny Dreadful.) My original plan was to meld the two into a larger song, there was no guitar, and the resulting medley was for harpsichord, cello, and voice. Maybe some Irish whistle. Things went... AWRY. Even by the time I was recording scratch tracks my voice was starting to fry around the edges and I knew pretty much by the end of that session that I was getting sick. By the next morning I was a mucus monster and my voice was gone, as was every ounce of energy & willpower. Booooo.
Thanks for joining me this year for Folk Horror Month! Until next year - stay weird, get creepy, and have a blessed Samhain & a Happy Halloween. ~m

THE GRIESLY BRIDE - CREATURE FEATURE! - Folk Horror Month 2024
Переглядів 1273 місяці тому
#FolkHorrorMonth #FolkHorror #FolkMusic Let's overexplain it! "Griesly" is an archaic form of the word "grisly" (which is Old English in origin.) Pronounced "gree-zly" - www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/griesly - I went around and around about that one because so many people say it "grizzly"... but, lo, it is in Merriam-Webster with a long ee sound & only later started sounding like "izz". Ba...
LIZIE WAN - Roud 234 / Child 51 - When Family is THE WORST
Переглядів 583 місяці тому
#FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic A complete tonal shift from last week - we've gone auld folk this time - a lot Scottish & full gothic drama. Lizie Wan, aka Lucy Wan, aka Lizzie Wan - tangentially related to Edward and Two Brothers. Please heed the CW, it is accurate! This song is an old one with quite a few variations - but the theme of incest and subsequent murder is the main storyline...

*FOLK HORROR MONTH 2024 IS HERE.* #FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic This song was written in 1959 by Marijohn Wilkin & Danny Dill, and was originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. Later versions kept it alive and it maintained popularity for a number of decades, becoming a classic, covered by major artists such as Johnny Cash and even The Proclaimers. _CW: For its era & context, this song i...

Fair Maid on the Shore - Roud 181 - also known as Maid on the Shore, an English folk song. In it's Irish and American folk iterations known sometimes as The Mermaid. #FolkMusic The fake ships are supposed to be funny, please laugh! 😂 This wonderful old song is essentially a trickster story - a young maiden is espied by a ship's crew & the captain wants to abscond with her, or at least get her o...
BARBARA ALLEN - Child 84 / Roud 54 - The Song With 1000+ Versions.

#FolkMusic There are literally thousands of versions of this song. It gets its first literary mention in the 1660s, and it was first recorded as a wax pressing in 1907. Here's the surprisingly thorough wiki for it - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Allen_(song) - which includes the lyrics from the song's original form. As you will see - there are SO MANY names for the song as well. My recording in...

FINAL VIDEO FOR FOLK HORROR MONTH! *Please heed the CW.* #FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth Two points I forgot to make in the video, for clarification: 1. While I'm talking specifically about European folk music for most of this video, I think it's also pretty important to point out that folk music is all over the world. There are folk songs in every country & culture, in every era. All of it is won...

OCTOBER IS FOLK HORROR MONTH!! OCTOBER IS FOLK HORROR MONTH! Please heed the CW at the beginning of the video. #FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic For our third entry: Get ready for a tale of woe and dastardly deeds turned horror - what begins as a terrible but predictable tragedy ends with a curse and dead bodies. Yikes! This is a tune out of Hungary - a traditional, we think... the origins of this song are murky and yo...

OCTOBER IS FOLK HORROR MONTH! Please heed the Content Warning at the beginning! #FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic Happy Friday the 13th! For Week 2 I'm giving you a truly monstrous villain - a grizzly series of events - and some gruesome imagery. Not a whole lot of information on this song - it is a Scottish traditional from the early 19th century (as per Francis Child) and there seems to...
WEILE WEILE WAILE - October is FOLK HORROR month!

PLEASE HEED THE CW IN THIS VIDEO #FolkHorror #FolkHorrorMonth #FolkMusic Welcome to FOLK HORROR MONTH here on my channel - October content has begun & this one's a doozy. The first & the worst, as they say. I think American folk musicians view this song very seriously - but in Ireland it's a children's schoolyard song. We Americans can probably get perspective on this by thinking of our own gho...
The Two Magicians - Roud 1350 - Child 44 - The Lady & The Blacksmith
Переглядів 96Рік тому
Please heed the content warning. #FolkHorror #FolkMusic THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG. POV is everything. I sing a host of truly gruesome folk horror songs, especially with October coming up (stay tuned!) but I no longer sing this one. It's something to do with the way it presents the perspective of what is happening & even in the versions where the Lady doesn't lose - the point of view is that she i...
The Wind That Shakes The Barley - Roud 2994 - aka Royal Charlie
Переглядів 281Рік тому
You've heard this song from many folk greats - but those are not this song. Let me explain! #FolkMusic This tune has a lot of cross references! The poem was written by Robert Dwyer Joyce in the mid-1800s & his note on the tune he set it to is "Royal Charlie." There are a number of recordings of this song, but I wanted to try and use his intended original tune and finally tracked it back to a tu...

Thank you. I will check it out! I recorded this in 2011, so I have no idea where my research material on this song is anymore. I did take it directly from the Child Ballads, though, and the tune was credited as an ancient Orkney tune, with most available information upholding that origin story. So I'd love if you could provide sources/citations for your comment - I'd be so interested to read them - as it's the first time I've heard that about this song! It's amazing how these old songs interweave across time. Folk music never stops being interesting! ❤ ~m

This is not the original tune. It is a pipular tune, but the song it comes from is "I Come & Stand at Every Door" about a child of Hiroshima. Archie Fisher has a far more accurate tune and words. On You Tub it is called "The Norway Maid" Check it out
