Wild Hair Don’t Care (by Sue Robishaw) - Sue R. and Steve Schmeck
We play music at local farmers markets, amongst the activity of vendors and customers. One busy sunny summer market I noticed a happy young child with her mother who was busy selecting vegetables at a booth near me. The little girl, with soft lively curls topped by a bouncing pony-tail, was obviously enjoying her trip to the market, trotting/dancing as far as was comfortable, then back again, chattering to herself, not bothering anyone (except this now somewhat distracted musician!), peering on tiptoes to see what Mom was doing, enjoying everything, talking, laughing in her own world. This was obviously one secure contented happy soul. At one point, as she went by me, she twirled around and I saw on her little T-shirt the words “Wild Hair Don’t Care”.
This scene and those words twirled around my head all summer, making me smile every time. It was natural that the words would find a tune. And in a bit of self defense I finally wrote the verses and secured it all in this song. The tune for the verses was taken from an old Irish jig “Lilliburlero”.
Hope you enjoy the song and the happy feeling behind it!
--------------------------
“Wild Hair Don’t Care” by Sue Robishaw
chorus
Wild hair don’t care, I’m in love with life!
Wild hair don’t care, don’t turn out the light.
Wild hair don’t care, circle with delight!
Wild hair don’t care, dancing thru the night.
verses
Sun loving cats and chorals of cabbages,
Sing with the cranes asleep in the rain.
Roots in the cellar and bats in the rafters,
Cozy all night and happy all day.
Tree climbing chipmunks, Grass growing taller.
Frogs callin’ spring in, and bees at the bar.
Snakes wriggle polkas, Crows jiggle moonbeams.
Does bring their fawns in to play in the yard.

Mice with their snowshoes race ski flying foxes.
IceCycles roll with delight down the hill.
Shadows of moonlight pull puffy white blankets
Over the rabbits asleep with the hens.

Memories of Green Fields (Greensleeves/Sue Robishaw) - Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw
Переглядів 315Рік тому
The old English tune Greensleeves has been around (and popular) since the mid 1500’s, with numerous lyric versions through the years. We’ve always liked the tune but the typical words of a rejected lover never appealed to me. One day while singing it, “green fields” and a different “story” appeared in my mind and inserted itself into the tune. I took it from there for a different version of thi...

Among the tunes and songs we played at the Historic Townsite of Fayette State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for this year’s “Play Music on the Porch Day” were these two fun traditional Irish reels. We had a good time playing and chatting with visitors from our perch on the wonderful 1860’s hotel porch, taking some time out in the middle to record. The view from the porch is stunning a...

We are at the Historic Townsite of Fayette State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the wonderful old porch of the 1860’s hotel for this year’s “Play Music on the Porch Day”. We recorded a few songs and tunes in the middle, appropriate to the setting, including this slow Scottish air ...

For this year’s “Play Music on the Porch Day” we returned to the Historic Townsite of Fayette State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the wonderful old porch of the 1860’s hotel. We played and chatted with visitors for several hours, enjoying the beautiful day and exceptional view. Battle of Aughrim -- Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw
Переглядів 138Рік тому
"Battle of Aughrim" is a popular 18th century Irish march whose name commemorates an important historical battle in Ireland. Also known as 'After the Battle of Aughrim'. For me the tune reminds me of the progression of a day here in the Upper Peninsula. The first time through feels like the calm early morning; by the second time the sun is climbing higher and the day becoming active with bird s...

We went down to one of our favorite beaches along Lake Michigan east of the old Thompson docks for this enjoyable bedtime lullaby written by Malvina Reynolds in 1957 and made popular by the Seekers some ten years later. This song comes often to mind when we’re rocking and rolling while paddling or rowing out on the water. We did this video originally in September of ‘21 and well remember the be...

The Blackest Crow -- Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw
Переглядів 182Рік тому
This old song is from the mid 1800’s Appalachia/Ozarks and seemed to fit October with its contrasting weather patterns of mild and intense, with a taste of farewell to the warm days of summer. The song was popular around Civil War times and there are many variations. The tune, in a pentatonic scale, is likely even older. The song was also known by ‘My Dearest Dear’, ‘The Time Draws Near’, ‘The ...

A late 1800’s lullaby written by an unknown author in America became quite popular in protestant churches across the United States and Europe. Set and sung to many different tunes it eventually settled in to the two most popular (or most published). In the United States it was a tune written by James R. Murray and in England a composition by American William J. Kirkpatrick, the song becoming on...
Jamie Allen - Girl I Left Behind Me -- Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw

Here are two old-time fiddle tunes to finish off November and enjoy an unusually nice day. We found a spot out of the gusty winds so we could play outside. With winter on its way these days are special! Both tunes are likely from the late 1700’s. The first is Scottish-English, named after a Northumbrian piper Jamie (or Jimmy or Jemmy) Allen. The second is Irish-English. Of course, no one knows ...
Raglan Road (Patrick Kavanagh / Traditional) -- Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw

For autumn “Raglan Road”, a lyrical ballad poem written by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh in 1946, set to an old irish slow air "Fáinne Geal an Lae", also known as “Dawning of the Day”. In the 1960’s Kavanagh gave the song to Luke Kelly of the Dubliners who brought it to the public with great success. The poem is based more or less on Kavanagh’s own experience but there are a number of interesting...

We recorded this song last year but for several reasons wanted to redo it. And today’s sunshine and warm breeze seemed to fit this strong gentle soul-filled song. To me it is a love song for those who have lived happily and closely together for decades. It is different than my usual preference for cheery songs but we both like it and the gentle tune. It is straight from the heart. Written in 20...
Loch Lomond / Scotland the Brave - Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw
Переглядів 1552 роки тому
Here is a lighter version of the popular mid 1800’s Scottish song “Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond” whose tune is from an old Scottish air. I’ve always liked the song but not the rather depressing lyrics so I changed a few words to give it a different story, one I enjoy singing. The local “Loch” on whose banks we stood for our rendition of the song may not be as well known as Loch Lomond but it is ...

I've always felt the song was somewhat incomplete with only one verse, and it leaves you wondering how it could have turned - well, you've supplied one happy ending, though maybe tinged with some regret for those lost years and what might have been. Best wishes to you both from Wales. xx
