Turbo EFI 460 6R80 Swap!
**First 9mins is going over the ZF5 damage, then I get into the 6R80 swap content.
Swapped in a built 6R80 into the 1991 F250 Turbo EFI 460!
In this video I rebuild the 6R80 and BW1356 transfer-case before installing them into the truck. This build was a challenge for sure but I am very happy with the final results!
Transmission is controlled by a US Shift Quick 6 Gen 2 controller. It has a trans-brake, billet intermediate shaft and stage 2 frictions & steels.
Shift is a Lokar ES6R80 shifter with manutronic shifting.
Driveshafts built by Drivelines NW in Everett, WA. Had to lengthen the front about 1.75" and shorten the rear the same.
Transmission adapter made by Performance Automatics.
Transmission spacer/engine plate made by Quick Time and is .125 thick.
SFI Flexplate for an automatic E4OD 460 truck.
Starter is from a 1997 F250 460 E4OD truck.
Please comment any questions and I will get back to you ASAP, this swap had some challenges but hopefully my trouble can help others who want the 6R80 in their rigs!

Got same motor in a fox body put turbo nice
What’s your turbo set up??
Where did u get that intake set up, mainly the two to one adapter. Thanks
Do you have to convert to an auto? I just got an 89 f350 dually with the 460 and manual trans. Hoping to keep her manual!
I've followed the journey on this thing and looking into getting something aftermarket like a mega squirt. I'm not gonna do the turbo setup but looking into building my motor with a nice cam head etc. To the point here my question with your experience with the mega squirt is it possible and user friendly enough to get a efi motor to lope idling like the carbed 460's sound?
Hi wondering what plugs you recommend going to run 10-12# of boost
Your speedometer is fukked dude
Too bad you were only going like 35 mph
I was just throwing around the idea of doing a 6r80 swap on my truck watching your video kinda gave me some confidence to do it. Just a quick question would this same process work for a e4od truck. Also how does the quick shift connect to the pcm. How much do you think this whole swap was?
Just the info I’ve been looking for! Awesome video
hey man! any issues so far with those pumps? been looking at them and heard some iffy stuff. thanks!
They have been absolutely flawless so far. I continue to drive the truck every weekend and fuel pressure has been spot on at all times. I definitely recommend them.
@@johnvirgilsgarage good enough for me! Thanks man
Are u still on stock fuel lines?
Is there a reason you went with the US shift controller versus a pimpex controller?
Yes, unfortunately the pimpx and other Megasquirt controllers are not yet capable of running these modern 6 speeds but they will be soon I believe. That's the only reason though, lack of support.
Just wondering at what boost pressure you have your meth start spraying at and full open. Also what size of nozzle
I've made quite a few changes to the truck since this video, if you watch my newer ones you will see, but I now have it spraying at about 5 psi of boosts and it ramps up the spray to about 14psi where it's spraying the max amount.
@@johnvirgilsgarage ok that's kind of where I thought I'd start mine
Love the build. I'll soon be working on a F-100 project with a 460 and planning on twin 7875's. I'll eventually go to a 6R80 down the road. I'd love to pick your brain on the Megasquirt and running LS coils.
It's a plug and play kit from Stinger Performance. If you join their forum on their website they have a ton of information on there about it.
@@johnvirgilsgarage I'll check it out. I'm leaning toward a MS3 Pro. I just want to run the CNP ignition with a carb for the time being, but have the additional features and I/O's for data logging and the ability to expand to EFI later.
Check out the new MS3 gold lite, looks awesome! www.efisource.com/wp/shop/ms3-gold-lite/
@@johnvirgilsgarage Thanks! That seems like it could fit my needs for about half the price of a MS2 Pro!
460 I'm trying to get won't fire 🫠 and stay running this gives me hope 😂
I like to break stuff and fix it, subscribed
what was the overall cost on this?
Chances are the valve isn't bent. It's more then likely the guide isn't exactly parallel to the fire ring. In order to get it to seal fully you'd need to install fire ring and either tac it or something to hold it in that position at all times then lap the valve. But then you wouldn't be able to disassemble it. That's usually the issue with all the cheap knockoff gates. I've even had this same problem with genuine tial gates leaking the tiniest bit. Gotta figure if your running 20psi boost there's more then likely atleast 30psi of backpressure or more. It's just like a cylinder head where the seat/fire ring is stationary but the valve can twist spin. Need to do the same for the fire ring when lapping the valve.
you think you would ever go back to zf5? or do a possible mt82 or tr6060 or tko600?
I'll for sure keep my 6R80 in this truck but I love driving ZF5 & ZF6 rigs. A TR6060 would be awesome for the right setup.
please do a price breakdown on the trans swap
6R80 to 460 adapter - $300 ✅ Quick6 - $950 ✅ BW1356 to 6R80 and bolts - $440 ✅ 6R80 - $650 ✅ Exedy stage 2 $490 ✅ 300M Billet shaft $500 ✅ Oil cooler - $200 ✅ Oil cooler adapters - $40 ✅ Shifter - $600 ✅ Automatic truck pedals - $15 ✅ Clutch slave block off plate - $0 ✅ Transmission mount - $30 ✅ Crossmember (custom) Total cost ~ $4090 Sell ZF5 swap - $1600 **Out of pocket cost - $2490**
Ur freaking surgical. I hope to accomplish half what you have
Hi i have stock 460 other than cam and valve springs, comp thumper. Going to install aces tbi with s475 turbo and intercooler, wondering what i should gap rings to and what is a safe boost pressure on stock internals
Will any silicone work?
I have found a new love for the "right stuff" black rtv. Stuff is great and sets up quickly
...just curious if you have the speed density or MAF sensors...thx...
At the time of this video I was batch fire / speed density. I have since rebuilt everything and I am now fully sequential fuel and spark with LS coils on each plug. Sequential fueling does not require a MAF though so I do not run one.
THX AC?
My truck does not have AC, it's a Custom model. Having AC wouldn't change anything though.
Hell yeah
Nice! I want that cool stuff for my navigator man thatd be coool
Hey man I’m 17 and I just got myself a pimpx ecu for my efi 460 with a zf5 and I’m just trying to get it installed and I was wondering if i need a act sensor for a n/a setup?
Awesome! Yes you definitely want that senseo installed. Feel free to message me on IG if you need anything. My IG is the same name as UA-cam.
Dude that’s awesome
Didn’t realize your local, might have to chat sometime planning on doing this EXACTLY in my 79
Nice!!!! You should have put it in the car show.
yo dude its sean, cool update on the truck. the 6r80 seems sweet. Id love to see some pulls and the downshifts. i bet that thing moves.
They should have a kit on the market for the efi 460 imo
I'm likely going to make a few kits to sell soon. Mine has been flawless for the last 3 years in the Pacific Northwest soni feel it's ready to be sold as a kit.
@@johnvirgilsgarage I’ll be the first one to purchase it if you do, I’m working on a short bed 95 f150 and I have a efi 460 on a stand ready to swap in it.
That does not look like 85mph at all lol
I love my FEs the smaller bores are less likely to detonate, make 825 hp as a 410 with forged pistons and it’s a fun engine as a blow through.
They are definitely bad ass. My issue was too tight of ring gap as the engine wasn't built for boost. It has since been properly built and is now making over 800whp 🤙
Do you have any better photos or video of the passenger side manifold you modified?
Message me on my IG and I can send you some pictures. instagram.com/turbo_efi460_bricknose?igsh=dnA3bWl4czFoNnUy
Just found your video through facebook. I just welded some things to other things in my e4od in my 97 ext cab dually. Do you think youll be getting better fuel economy with the 6 speed or it souod be that much better for towing. I want to eventually 4x4 swap my truck but roght now getting a transmission sorted out would be grear.
I have been driving with this transmission for a bit now and it's for sure getting me better fuel mileage. I'm seeing a pretty consistent 14-15 mpg at cruise on the highway.
I have a 96 f350 460 dually. I want something like this
Thanks for the video. I have the Pimp X in my 92 f150 plugged into the factory harness so I don't have the expansion harness like you, what do you recommend I use to connect the s-link to my Pimp x ?
So I use the Bluetooth module adapter now primarily due to having some connectivity issues with my tablet but to make either work you need the expansion harness (with just the two RX wires) and an RS232 adapter. I need to try the wifi module again though as Bluetooth has a slight delay on data being received. I use the Bluetooth when I'm not making live tune changes.
That's awesome, making that kind of horsepower and still getting stockish gas mileage. Hell it's better then my stock 91 460 5speed two wheel drive
Seriously! Today I was cruising at about 55-60 on mostly flat surface and it was getting a little better than 15 mpg. Just seems to keep getting better 🤙
I am also running megasquirt on my Turbo 460! BBF has a distinct sound to it...
Awesome! A factory EFI 460?

If you check out my new videos, my truck now has a 6R80, bigger turbo, LS coils and is running E85 making over 800whp + 1000wtq
I'll have to remember to ask you more about the 6r80 swapp when I'm ready for one. sounds better then a built e4od.
Oh yes, for sure and more gears!
What clutch were you running? I have a zf5 and I’m wanting to go turbo also.
It was the Luk HD Towing clutch, single disk. Held up great for a long time, just didn't like 800whp but still a very impressive clutch.
@@johnvirgilsgarage thanks I wasn’t sure what to put in it. If you would have stuck with the zf5 would you have replaced it or any idea what clutch you might have went to?
I would have either gone with a SPEC multi disk or had one custom made by a reputable clutch shop.
I don't think much of the ZF5... but it is impressive that yours help up! I have to ask, how do you like the 6r80 thus far? I have been hung up in transmission limbo for years with my build trying to find a durable and dependable option. I am a straight shift man, but I have to say the 6r80 seems desirable. My engine combo is a 572CI Kaase Boss9. An auto would make things easy. Any input would be appreciated.
I do miss shifting the manual transmission but the 6R80 is bad ass. My truck is way faster with this transmission. Even with the boost turned down it feels faster and it stays in boost during shifts. Make the truck a whole different animal, traction is harder to find now 😂
@@johnvirgilsgarage why not a 6R140?
No support for the swap yet but when they do release the swap parts it would be a great choice for sure.
@@johnvirgilsgarage so here’s another one for you. I noticed you said you were running 35 with 456 gears! That’s a lot of gear! I’m running 36 1/2 on 373 years. I’m geared for four speed manual. So the 6R80 has a 4.17 first gear and a double overdrive. what gear is your transmission start off in, I cannot imagine you taking off at 4:56 years but that steep of a first gear. But you could be starting second?
@@seansongmusic the gearing is fantastic, I love the combination. I put it in drive and go, the transmission shifts outta first pretty quickly but it's so seamless. I definitely could start off in second if I wanted to though. I'll try to record the shifts so it can be seen on video but it's very good.
Are you still running the stock heads and cam? The hp that you are getting at 13 psi of boost would equate to something in the neighborhood of 350hp NA so was curious. I think this would be a ton of fun in an F-600. Really wish my Dad hadn't scrapped his 1969 F-350 with the factory ordered aftermarket installed 4wd. It had a 12' flatbed and is an absolute unicorn. Oh well some of us inherit money others inherit bills, I know which one I'm getting.
No I am running ported heads with bigger valves, cam is aftermarket also. Engine made about 420hp 520tq naturally aspirated on an engine dyno. All my HP TQ numbers after that have been measured at the rear wheels.
@@johnvirgilsgarage What is your elevation and are you numbers corrected for elevation or not? I was calculating in some driveline loss in my initial estimate based on 14.7 psi of boost doubling your horsepower I was thinking the 13psi along with the water/meth injection should put your around 700hp at the crank give or take a bit, might have been a bit low on my initial now that I think about it. Not knocking the build or anything just curious. I bet the addition of an intercooler would put you into the 700's. Although it's not like 600hp and 750tq isn't plenty. Sounds like it is a beast down low as well. Almost like having a diesel in there. How thirsty is it with the 35's?
watch some of my other videos. It's been on the dyno since this one. I just wrapped up a built 6R80 swap on it. Most recently made 840whp and well over 1k wtq. It has an intercooler, methanol injection, flex fuel, coil on plug, etc. This video is pretty old, lots been done since.
I'm just above sea level. That Dyno reads on the lower side, probably more accurately than others. Fuel mileage with the sequential fuel and spark on 92 octane at cruise, with the 6R80 transmission is about 15mpg.
What do you got in this for a transmission?
At the time of this video it was a ZF5, I now run a built 6R80.
Really nice clean setup John! Got the 460 mild built NA in my 67 Mustang. Thinking about going to EFI. Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
nice job!
