Retro'ish flight sim/space sim gamer with an interest in getting these old classics running as well as possible on modern hardware!
Subwar 2050 (Lossless Scaling frame generation test)
So I picked up a copy of Lossless Scaling on Steam to see how the frame generation worked for old DOS sims.
Getting it to record with GeForce Experience is a bit of a hit and miss affair and I'm not 100% certain it records what I'm seeing on screen properly. However this is the Power Station mission, played @ 60fps (or maybe more still not 100% sure). It may be more noticeable IRL, so to speak, than this video?
Using the DOSBox Staging sharp renderer rather than the default crt-auto renderer as that creates some ugly banding on screen.
Using these DOSBox Staging settings:
[sdl]
windowresolution = default
host_rate = auto
vsync = false
presentation_mode = cfr
output = opengl (nope was wrong about texture)
[dosbox]
dos_rate = 30
[render]
glshader = sharp
And these Lossless Scaling settings:
Scaling Mode: Auto, Aspect ratio
Scaling: LS1
Frame Generation: LSFG 2.4
Mode: x3
Sync Mode: Off
Capture API: DXGI (maybe this should be WGC?)
If anyone knows if any of these are sub-optimal (or just plain wrong) feel free to comment and let me know!

Joint Strike Fighter extended dogfight test (DxWrapper @ 1920x1200)

Joint Strike Fighter with DxWrapper @ 1920x1200 seems pretty solid. This is an extended dogfight test in the Columbia location, so lots of fighters (and no chasing down a Tu-22M that's running away!) and lots of pitch up/down manoeuvres without crashing or on-screen artifacting. Guns only because that's more fun and we want to have lots of ACM to try and get problems to occur. In an earlier tes...
Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) intro video with scanlines removed

As part of testing JSF with DxWrapper, I set the remove scanlines option so I could see the wrapper was running as soon as the intro video started. Thought it might be interesting to see, so here's a very short video showing exactly that! I think I know what the JSF problem is and a workaround With DxWrapper there aren't any (or at least a lot fewer) crashes to desktop, just a freeze or stutter followed by artifacting around the outside of the HUD overlay, but usually not in the centre. I think this gives us a clue to the cause, I think the flight engine is handling the HUD overlay sprites badly at higher resolutions and throwin...

Not sure if this one is tricky, or ridiculously straight forward. You either have to destroy all of the sensor pods or just the last one. Anyway I destroyed them all. Each one takes 6 rockets and my walkthrough is wrong, there are 7 of them (not 6), so you'll need 42 rockets which is pretty close to the maximum you can carry, which is 47. First pod is unguarded, next two have a torpedo mine gua...
Privateer 2: The Darkening - testing running natively in Win10

Privateer 2: The Darkening is a game I've completed a few times but it's never been one I played in DOSBox or natively in Win 10. So after writing a Privateer setup guide on the website, I thought I'd give Privateer 2 a go. The instructions I found around the web might be right for the GOG version but there's a lot of extra things you need to do for other retail versions and if you don't, then ...

Another very short mission, the first three waypoints are a routine patrol. But the carrier gets attacked so head back at top speed, you should be able to get back before the enemy subs reach it. I send the wingman after the nearest enemy while I deal with the furthest one. Two dead enemy subs later it's mission accomplished, literally just takes a couple of mins!

Longbow Gold (3dfx) - trying movies (Win 10 native nGlide)
Man, I had completely forgotten about this game. Seems like there were a lot of games from that era that I played and then, sadly, forgot about.
Miss those scifi underwater games. Archimedean Dynasty, Aquanox, Sub Culture and Deep Fighter were great.
I had heard of the first 3 but Deep Fighter was a bit of a mystery to me. Had to look it up on MobyGames. I'm surprised it's not more well known it had fairly decent review scores and looks interesting. I should give it a look sometime!
Not sure if I see a difference, to be honest. But I love that you are playing a game that I remember fondly from when I was as old as my kid today. ^^
Yeah, I'm not sure if it's the recording software or there just isn't that much difference, I've switched to the beta version in steam and going to give that a whirl. Not only playing, I've actually managed to complete it, walkthrough on the website!
That gun sound is terrible.
Well it's an experimental aircraft, so they must have the gun camera hooked up to a telex machine, for some sweet hardcopy ascii art gun kills! 🤣
This is great. I tried something similar on Windows 10, i tried mapping the directions buttons on my keyboard to my saitek x52. But the buttons are not mapped as axis+ so it doesn't work proparly. But your way is a lot better.
Yes, it's the ability to control the joysticks under, PCem which allows you to control what Win98 sees as a joystick being the key. It's a very useful technique for flight sim emulation. Glad it proved useful for you 👍
Any chance for a full guide?
Bit early for that, still testing!
@@darkenedroom ok will keep tracking :)
Can you share which files you used from dxwrapper and which settings in the. ini?
Yup, when I have a chance I'll add something to the website. And I need to get the control scheme process consistent. 👍
Short answer is ddraw.dll with the following ini settings enabled: Dinputto8, EnableDdrawWrapper, HandleExceptions, DdrawEmulateSurface, DdrawEmulateLock, FilterNonActiveInput
@@darkenedroom Thanks I will check as soon as I can myself. I am wondering if the dxwrapper would be the good solution for Longbow 2 and the rockets falling short. I am saying because it was sure in FA-18 in janes solving the automatic landing problem in native W10
@@Gabriele-bu7ri It's easy to set up and config DxWrapper and the engines may be similar enough so that the same settings that worked for FA-18 may work for Longbow 2.
interesting new dxwrapper works
I thought it was worth giving it a whirl and see what happens. The ability to convert to DInput8 might help in a few other games as well.
Nice. JSF works fine for me on Windows 10 in software mode, but if I increase the resolution it's prone to crash during mission. Will have to test it out.
Will have to document what I've found so far, but some early promising results. Getting the HOTAS to work took a bit of faffing around with control schemes and the buttons don't work but mapping software would probably help that out. Throttle and stick axes were fine!👍
Ok so the joystick is sorted, I had 3dfx enabled so turning it off isn't enough, the game has to start with 3dfx disabled, so turn it off, quit and restart and if the 3dfx is disabled, joystick should work straight-away. Buttons still not mapped and getting to button 36 in the remapping options will cause a freeze. IMHO after some dogfighting the handle exception option in DxWrapper means the game will hit a dx exception and continue there will be artifacts around the screen but it won't just CTD. The higher the resolution the less time it takes to hit an exception. So at 1920x1200 you can dogfight for a few mins before a freeze and screen artifacts everywhere. Lower the resolution the longer everything will be fine. But there are still a lot of options to test, so DxWrapper is worth it just to prevent CTD after a tricky mission and the game crashes 30 seconds from landing!
is this real? what is real?
Absolutely atrocious game that I probably played for 500 hours over the years.
lol, I know exactly what you mean, I've put in many many hours myself, the worst bit is escorting a transport and it jumps out just as pirates jump in and you lose your transport. And now I've added a guide to play it on Windows 10, what have I done! 🤣
Lossless Scaling 를 이용하면 DOS게임에서 더높은 FPS 를 얻을수 있습니다.
I've had a quick look at frame generation with Lossless Scaling, didn't notice a big difference with EF2000 but it made much more of a difference with Subwar 2050. Although I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet, so I'll continue to look at it. 👍
What are the dos box settings?
There's some listed in the video description, well the important ones that differ from the DOSBox Staging defaults, but I haven't added a guide to my website so I'll probably add one there fairly shortly! 👍
Added a setup guide to the description so hopefully that will be of some help 👍
Cool, which joystick are you using?
I'm using my TM Warthog HOTAS, I have TM TFRP rudder pedals as well but I don't think I used them for Privateer., since it doesn't support a throttle axis I was probably just using throttle buttons as the speed control.
This looks great
It really does! And the internal cockpit view is at a high enough resolution to use as an internal cockpit view without having too switch to MFD views, although I still did! 👍
One of the classics! 😀
Really is, still love it and it looks so good at ridiculously high res 🤣
What resolution did you use?
In game resolution was 640x400, the desktop resolution was 3840x2160, so with a 4:3 aspect ratio set in the DOSBox config, (I think, might be wrong) the actual game windows size might be getting upscaled by DOSBox Staging to 2560x1920 given the black bars top/bottom/left/right of the game window.
1:15 ...thats where you meet the ground in real life :P
You can almost see the exact moment I thought 'I should not have done that' 🤣
@darkenedroom yup:) this system saved my life so many times when the demon inside you want that kill hehe. But I ended up canceling it because it interfered my NOE flight (one of the strongest points in this game)

what is strange is that teamapache is older than ka-52 from same team. But it works much better on W10 with simpy W10. I hear your audio is slightly laggin though
Yeah, I have it running natively in Win10, trickier to record video though. It just needed Windows standard compatibility fixes. You get freezing/stuttering on the intro movies, and there may be some issues with modern multi-axes/multi-button controllers (which is why PCem may be preferable for some). On the plus side it can use the 3dfx native drivers with PCem, I don't think this is Glide but something closer to the 3dfx hardware. Lagging may be due to the SB PCII 128 sound card configured in PCem, might be better to switch to SB16 or AWE32.
DXWND runs this as good as it was in the old days with DX wrapper and DD wrapper.
DxWnd and nGlide are the wrappers used in this video: ua-cam.com/video/11qghKBqzmw/v-deo.html&ab_channel=darkenedroom Settings are described in the setup guide (link in video description)
It's been decades since I played it!
I've never played it but I just wanted to see if I could get it running as well as possible under wiin10. Plays a lot better with the fan made patches.
Anyway good idea dxwrapper, I just tried. lighter and more stable than dxwnd, whose fps control feature is not really friendly. Do you think Dxwrapper could work also for LB2 and perhaps solving the rockets issue?
Not sure, I have it installed in pcem but was unaware of any rocket issue?
@@darkenedroom check. In native mode w10 (with dgvoodoo installed) you will see that anything over 18 FPS , on my system in the least, will lead the unguided rockets to fall short of targets
" Key-presses that generate speech, (e.g. landing gear toggle) will only result in audio twice. Toggling a third time will be without speech until an amount of time has passed. I'm not sure if this is intended behaviour or an issue with the game or DirectSound. " let me quote you. I tried in pcem and I had some behaviuour, but my pcem is screwed since host computer is not powerful enough
Tricky to tell, I think I'd have to build a dedicated win98 box to be really sure. But given it occurs on different OS's/emulators/wrappers makes me think intended behaviour.
An Macintosh sieht viel besser aus.

why not dosbox SVN daum. With JF3 works perfectly
DOSBox SVN daum is a very old and no longer maintained DOSBox build, any issues you have with it, you'll have to try and sort out yourself, while modern DOSBox builds are continually, maintained, bug fixed and enhanced. If a game has an issue, is it game issue or a bug in SVN daum which has been fixed in DOSBox Staging/-X?
@@darkenedroom you are absolutely right. It is just that this was one of the early project I had, ad at that time SVN daum was the only way to support 3dfx. As for JF3 it is quite stable, and I won't move to staging, which I did for many other dos games
@@Gabriele-bu7ri SVN daum contributed a number of patches to DOSBox-X, so I'd consider that the spiritual successor to SVN daum rather than Staging. Didn't spent a lot of time with it, as I went with ECE at the time.
Interesting version, and nice more realistic cockpit layout. Wonder why they did not try a quick port of this back to pc when hardware was more powerful. But I guess the PC crowd had enough of stealth at that time. Thanks for the video!
This version was released in 1991 so they probably had their hands full with Gunship 2000 as well. I think there was a lot of unfinished business with F-19 that they wanted to fix with F-117A and I think it would have been hard to justify a 3.0 just a few years later.
@@darkenedroom Not to nitpick, but while the original DOS version of F-117a is from 1991, the Mac version did not come along until 1994. Which would place it well after the MPS arcade machine debacle, the sellout to Spectrum Holobyte and such. So I agree that it would indeed have been hard to justify at that point. And perhaps counterintuitive to try to compete with their own F-14 Fleet Defender.
Yup, absolutely right Mac wasn't until '94
Without glide, this game does not age well.
I quite like the DOS version but I played it back in the day, and the flight model is excellent, if you crank it up to expert and have to use stick, collective and rudder to keep it flying.
Immediate like. I like this version. What emulator are you using? Given the frame rate, Fusion 3? Once it was working well in Qemu for me, but then it started crashing like for everyone else.
I tried Qemu m68k and like you said, was very crash prone, been about 10 months since I last ran it so I'd thought I'd check. It's using MAME which has some very hardware accurate Mac emulation, although never the first thing that springs to mind when you think Mac emulation! If memory serves it's emulating a Quadra 800. Joystick support is provided by a MAME plugin I wrote, MacFlight which does some joystick/mouse axes translation. With MAME you can activate a 'cheat' menu to overclock the emulated CPU by up to 400% for smoother frame rates, although obviously the sound buffer isn't getting filled quick enough, hence the sound issues.
Can dgVoodoo work with DOSBox-X, or is it just for nGlide ?
Yes glide passthrough is about handing glide requests off to something else to deal with, so nGlide, dgVoodoo2, etc. With dgVoodoo2 ua-cam.com/video/RqBbVFW1Bbs/v-deo.html
Which emulator did you use, Basilisk?
All the usual suspects, Basilisk/SheepShaver, Qemu, etc all fail to run it in a stable fashion. The only emulator that could was MAME, the Mac emulation is a lot more hardware accurate!
