Testing KA-52 Team Alligator in PCem

Quick test of KA-52 Team Alligator the belated sequel to Team Apache. I'm really not sure about this sim, there is a huge deadzone on the cyclic and I'm not sure why the collective seems to do it's own thing in hover or in general. I remember Team Apache being pretty responsive control-wise. Running it in PCem, some sound distortion which can be helped by reducing the sound buffer length in PCem.

Showing off the Anthology release of Jane's AH-64D Longbow with the 3dfx/Glide patch running natively under Windows 10. Movie is stretched here but in correct aspect ratio on monitor. Very tricky to get stable and it's taken a while to get here. Run through a historical mission very badly, but then it's about showing off a mission without crashing (well, without crashing to desktop, I still man...

It been a while since I tested this and I just wanted to make sure it was ok. It's just the standard Libya training mission, but you may not have seen the Mac version, it's an absolute pain to run under emulation, but managed it! Skipped the dull bits, just the attack and landing. Sound issues are due to a 400% overclock on the emulated Mac cpu to keep the frames smooth.

I still have this game!!! I even still have the sli 3dfx cards that I bought to run it. Man, so many memories, thanks!!
Glad you liked it!
Which version of DXWND? I am using 2-5-53 for KA-52 . Getting full screen requires some playing with windows and format of screen. Can share my settings if you want
also can you try a mission and try issue commands to wingmen?.. how are the sound messages?
Good to see it running in win 10
Wasn't too hard with DxWnd
I wonder if it would run well on a Windows XP or Windows 7 VM.
Should do Mobygames specs say Pentium, Win95 and DirectX 7.
Never heard of this game, looks awesome!
It was kinda the sequel to Team Apache.
Hope to see this running in win 10/11
Oh wow I had this back in the day. Wasn’t that good with it.
Quick question. Where do you find the Longbow Anthology download? all I see is Longbow Gold
I have a copy of Anthology, so ripped the cds into images but it works with Longbow Gold as well.
@@darkenedroom ok that’s cool. I will go with the gold then
This is great! Win 10 & 3dfx
Not perfect, but stable enough to playthrough now!

Awesome! Looks stunning! 😀
Just pleased all the work is done now!
👍
Man I used to have Anthology in the retail big box. It was massive, heavy and awesome!
I have the original big box retail, and picked up the original Flash Point Korea big box retail later. There was enough manual in those two to see you through a 2 week holiday!
Cool! I’ll try this in PCem
This'll work for the non-Glide Windows versions, about halfway through writing up the Windows Glide versions.
Finally done! www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/post/janes-longbow-gold-running-on-windows-10
and I have a challenge for you Ka-52 Team alligator. I have it working but not as I would like
I'd start with PCem and a Voodoo3 given its age, there a good chance of it working. If not then I'd try and run it natively under Win10, with nGlide, dgVoodoo2 and if it supports early DirectX then ddrawCompat , dgVoodoo2 and maybe dxwnd for compatibility if needed.
@@darkenedroomit works with dxwnd, althoguh with noise there are some issue
Seems to work ok with PCem, stick/collective and pedals all work, you'll want to disable h/w accelerated sound, apart from that seems good?
@@darkenedroom hang on, which PCEM configuration?
@@darkenedroom hang on, which configuration of pcem., I tried yesterday was a disaster
why not dosbox SVN daum. With JF3 works perfectly
DOSBox SVN daum is a very old and no longer maintained DOSBox build, any issues you have with it, you'll have to try and sort out yourself, while modern DOSBox builds are continually, maintained, bug fixed and enhanced. If a game has an issue, is it game issue or a bug in SVN daum which has been fixed in DOSBox Staging/-X?
@@darkenedroom you are absolutely right. It is just that this was one of the early project I had, ad at that time SVN daum was the only way to support 3dfx. As for JF3 it is quite stable, and I won't move to staging, which I did for many other dos games
@@Gabriele-bu7ri SVN daum contributed a number of patches to DOSBox-X, so I'd consider that the spiritual successor to SVN daum rather than Staging. Didn't spent a lot of time with it, as I went with ECE at the time.
Interesting version, and nice more realistic cockpit layout. Wonder why they did not try a quick port of this back to pc when hardware was more powerful. But I guess the PC crowd had enough of stealth at that time. Thanks for the video!
This version was released in 1991 so they probably had their hands full with Gunship 2000 as well. I think there was a lot of unfinished business with F-19 that they wanted to fix with F-117A and I think it would have been hard to justify a 3.0 just a few years later.
@@darkenedroom Not to nitpick, but while the original DOS version of F-117a is from 1991, the Mac version did not come along until 1994. Which would place it well after the MPS arcade machine debacle, the sellout to Spectrum Holobyte and such. So I agree that it would indeed have been hard to justify at that point. And perhaps counterintuitive to try to compete with their own F-14 Fleet Defender.
Yup, absolutely right Mac wasn't until '94
Without glide, this game does not age well.
I quite like the DOS version but I played it back in the day, and the flight model is excellent, if you crank it up to expert and have to use stick, collective and rudder to keep it flying.
i played many hours of this in the past. Brilliant i thought.
The Amiga version is probably the best looking version out there. I was trying to recreate the Amiga look and feel, on a modern HD display. It can look a bit 'flat' but with a bit of filtering and reshade to adjust the colour it hopefully goes some way to duplicating the Amiga experience.
Immediate like. I like this version. What emulator are you using? Given the frame rate, Fusion 3? Once it was working well in Qemu for me, but then it started crashing like for everyone else.
I tried Qemu m68k and like you said, was very crash prone, been about 10 months since I last ran it so I'd thought I'd check. It's using MAME which has some very hardware accurate Mac emulation, although never the first thing that springs to mind when you think Mac emulation! If memory serves it's emulating a Quadra 800. Joystick support is provided by a MAME plugin I wrote, MacFlight which does some joystick/mouse axes translation. With MAME you can activate a 'cheat' menu to overclock the emulated CPU by up to 400% for smoother frame rates, although obviously the sound buffer isn't getting filled quick enough, hence the sound issues.
Can dgVoodoo work with DOSBox-X, or is it just for nGlide ?
Yes glide passthrough is about handing glide requests off to something else to deal with, so nGlide, dgVoodoo2, etc. With dgVoodoo2 ua-cam.com/video/RqBbVFW1Bbs/v-deo.html
Which emulator did you use, Basilisk?
All the usual suspects, Basilisk/SheepShaver, Qemu, etc all fail to run it in a stable fashion. The only emulator that could was MAME, the Mac emulation is a lot more hardware accurate!
That’s great news!
I think nGlide wins out performance-wise, at least on my machine.
Definitely looking good! I'm going to try it.
Best of luck, before you do so here's some advice to help: Have a look at this post for some background before you begin, it should help your understanding: www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/post/glide-wrappers-last-man-standing-or-peace-and-harmony I used a 2024 release of DOSBox-X either 2024 release works. Feel free to install/unzip it into a new folder, if you prefer and don't want to change any existing versions installed. nGlide is 32 bit so you have to use a matching x86 (32 bit) DOSBox-X exe. I used nGlide v2.10 installed as the system glide wrapper but if you have nGlide already and you're a bit unsure about upgrading and possible breaking stuff, you can unzip it (despite being an exe, with 7zip) into the 2024 DOSBox-X folder as a local glide wrapper. Skip the Vulkan back-end option in nGlide it's brand new and some stuff just doesn't like it, stick with the default auto option. I used a JF3 classic clean install so it's v1.63 or 1.65 (can't remember). You can test the internal DOSBox low level 3dfx emulation with this version, tiny window, but it proves 3dfx is functional in JF3. In DOSBox-X enable Glide passthrough and disable voodoo card (it's not clear in the DOSBox-X docs ( dosbox-x.com/wiki/Guide%3ASetting-up-3dfx-Voodoo-in-DOSBox%E2%80%90X ) these should be mutually exclusive). If all is good and configured properly you should be able to fire up DOSBox-X, go to the z:\system dir and copy glide2x.ovl into the mounted JF3 folder. You can try v1.63(5) but I didn't get it work with passthrough and nGlide prefers JF3 v1.67 so apply JF3 update, it should replace a load of files. Patch readme should say platinum v1.67. And give it a whirl! It's quite the amazing overhead drop, both CPU and GPU barely got over single figure % usage! If you want to use hotas use the SDL2 version of DOSBox-X x86 (32 bit) build, looks like there's a regression bug in the SDL1 build. However the SDL2 version introduces a fluidsynth regression bug so stick with Soundblaster 16 for midi in JF3. Hope that helps, good luck!
You can see why I write setup guides! 🤣
This was a cool game
I wasn't really planning on posting the Jetfighter III videos, I just wanted to quickly demo the Glide passthrough stuff and I already had it configured (or thought I did). Turns out, not so much, and it took a bit of work to get it fixed and running properly! 😂
@@darkenedroom i tinkered with the Jetfighter games trying to get them running on win 10/11.
@@robertsartino7664 it should be straightforward to run in DOSBox with software rendering, but for Glide prettiness, I've given the jetfighter some hints below. 👍
thejetfighter, damsonn and darkenedroom together on the same post. I am a happy old flight simmer now.
Looking good! This saga was the one that got me info flight sims. Good job!
Thankyou, but damsonn is right, it's not rendering properly, or at least it wasn't! Managed to get it sorted and it looks better than ever!
Looks pretty good, but seems only the clouds texture is filtered while the ground textures are not? Doesn't seem right - I've seen 3dfx screenshots in a game magazine long time ago and IIRC all textures had filtering applied.
Hmm, that's interesting and may require a bit more investigating, I'll do some digging! 👍
I do confirm. I am using Dosbox SVN DAUM. Ground and clouds are filtered.
yup figured it out took an inordinately long time but everything is filtered now, it was running in software rendering. What's funny is it looks better than ever and the CPU and GPU are struggling to get into double figures!
Omg this is amazing... been wanting to re-create A-10 Attack multimonitor on real hardware but never got enough time... this is gonna be epic... What do you think, can it work easily on 3 real monitors, not virtual?
Well I don't have 3 monitors, so I would test it virtually on one monitor, to make sure the performance meets your expectations and then I would test out the MAME scaling on a monitor, make sure your happy with that. If you have a single desktop over 3 monitors then I think it might be a case of scaling each window up on each monitor so in theory yes, in practice probably needs a bit of testing/experimentation. And I'd suggest taking a look at MacFlight a MAME plugin I wrote as Mac Joysticks worked like a mouse device, so the axes don't work as you might expect and MacFlight fixes this, so I'd test this as well on a single monitor, to make sure it works as expected. 👍
I have a question, it is not relevant for LB but I am getting out of options. I saw that in your blog you have many ideas on how to seup hotas on old dos games . in soome old games throttle axis is not supported by the simulator but instead the + / - keys are used, often on top row, close to number 0 on main keyb. How do you emulate with hotas, and without target? I tried with gremlins and joy2key and have no success
Excellent question, I have to give a more complete answer later, but when I played F-19 and F/A-Hornet 2.0 which used +/- keys I used the throttle hat buttons under my thumb rather than a throttle axis.
@@darkenedroom which is what i mostly do in the situation. But i would like to use the throttle
@@Gabriele-bu7ri (1) the more I think about the more I'm thinking it may be deserving of its own article on my website. So, you're probably looking at throttle axis banding. Using profile software to split the throttle axis into bands. So for a simple example, axis is configured with 3 bands, + key is mapped to the top band of the throttle, middle band does nothing and - is mapped to the lower band. The problem being that your throttle will pump out keypresses when it's within the band, so you'll probably want to make then key holds (simulates key held down).
(2) However, if the bands are wide then moving the throttle within the band changes nothing, the key is still held down, it's only as you move from one band to another that a change occurs. So if you're in the top band thrust is increasing, as you pull back the thrust still increases as you're still in the top band (which is very counter intuitive) it's only as you move into the middle band that thrust stops increasing and it will only start to decrease as you enter the lower band. The wider the band the less precise your throttle control will be. So you could limit this by limiting the banding to very narrow bands around the centre and filling the remaining unallocated axis space with dead bands so you end up with: Wide dead band (does nothing) -> Narrow band above centre (thrust increase) -> Medium centre band (does nothing) -> Narrow band below centre (thrust decrease) -> Wide dead band (does nothing) This ensures that there is only short travel from thrust increase/decrease to middle do nothing, limiting the counter intuitive action. How narrow/wide they should be will be a combination of personal preference and sim response. What's really needed is to program a profile with a motion of travel so pushing forward is a + key hold, stopping releases the key (thrust unchanged) and pulling back is a - key hold. But to do that you'll need to look into the advanced programming section of Gremlin to see if it's possible and there's the risk that depending on sim response, the centre point begins to move to an end of the axis (e.g. you have to pull back more to decrease than pushing forward to increase, eventually leaving you stuck at the bottom of your throttle axis). I wish I had an easy answer for you, when I've looked into throttle banding, I haven't been impressed with it, as an answer with any of the profiling software I've used. So for now I'm finding buttons a more intuitive control scheme, until I delve into to serious controller programming!
Is there going to be a tutorial on getting this running?
Bit of work still required but getting close so if it becomes stable enough for a guide it will get one, just unsure when that might be.
@@darkenedroom lookin forward to this sim if you can get it running smoothly. Thank you for your work on these classics
@@robertsartino7664 it's become a bit of hobby/addiction now! 🤣
@@robertsartino7664 well good news I think I have a solid working Win 3dfx version not 100% crash free but it's a consistent crash and can be worked around. Bad news, it's uncovered a huge amount of info that needs to be documented. It's going to require a Longbow (DOS), Longbow (Win) and Longbox (Win 3dfx) guides as the process/emulation is different for each one and a version/patch guide is needed as there are a few out there. What have I done! 🤣
What do you mean with " the on base bits"
The base screens which you can see at 0:09, with the Pilot, Campaign, Single mission, Instant action, Historical missions and Exit to operating system options. You couldn't see those in the previous video as MS GameBar wouldn't handle the switch from the base screen to the flight engine with the Glide wrapper I was using.

Good stuff! Sounds like a real pain-in-the-ass, but these Janes's titles were so awesome for the times that they really do need to be preserved.
Couldn't agree more the Jane's titles were special. The dos version runs fine in DOSBox but the win glide patched changed so much (not all of it good) it feels like a different game (but onr which should also be preserved). Could always try the anthology version which used a different glide patch, maybe?
@@darkenedroom did not know that, I’ll give the dos version a go. Maybe a case of insufficient skills though lol 😂
@@thomaspugh1255 oh yes, DOS longbow is a breeze to set up by comparison (at least it is for me!), but it won't use Glide/3dfx, that was a windows patch only. I'd recommend DOSBox Staging, have a look at Damson's video here: ua-cam.com/video/dSM8Uiv-zio/v-deo.html If you have a hotas with more than 4 axes (think TM Warthog) you may need a profile to limit it to 4 axis.

@@darkenedroomok so I got mig alley up and running in PCem and as you described in tutorial that the SB128 audio was snap crackle pop I concur. How did you get the AWE32 drivers into PCem?
Ah, I ended up having to look this up! The AWE32 is an ISA card so Windows 98 doesn't plug and play it in. You have to grab and extract the drivers on the emulated machine and use add new hardware wizard, let Windows do it's search and it should find it and ask you to point it to where the drivers are. Might want to have the Windows 98 iso as the cd image as well, as it grabs stuff from the Win 98 disk as it installs the card.
Awesome!
Thankyou, it's a definitely a bit of tricky beast to get running well! 😂

I've add a setup guide to my website, not only the bits that worked for me but other components others have found useful, it can be found here: www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/post/mig-alley-running-in-windows-10
I’ve been struggling for two weeks trying to get this too run as I gave all of the items you put in description to run it. No luck lol
I can imagine, it's very tricky to get running at all. After I got it running it was a bit of trial to record any gameplay. I'll be adding a guide to my website, hopefully fairly soon, life permitting, which will include not just the fixes I used, but the additional fixes that others have found that might be required as well. I'm hoping it'll be a fairly definitive guide. I'm also thinking this may be a sim that requires a PCem emulation setup guide as well, for those that just have no luck with Win 10. I've managed to get my hotas configured under Win 98 in PCem, which was my Novalogic Raptor video (different sim but the hotas setup should be the same).
There is one thing to quickly try. DDrawwCompat tends to fail if it finds too many valid resolutions. You can limit them by creating a ddrawcompat.ini file in the MiG Alley folder (where the DDrawCompat dll went), and add the following lines: SupportedResolutions=800x600,1024x768,1600x1200,2048x1536 ConfigHotkey=none Or whatever resolutions your monitor supports. Adding that file was a bit of a breakthrough in getting it to run on my machine.
@@darkenedroom I will try this thank you & if all else fails, I look forward to the video of how you got this to run.
Just created a setup guide you can find here: www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/post/mig-alley-running-in-windows-10 Not in video form as it covers what works for me but also what others have found beneficial in getting it to run, but I didn't strictly need.
my favourite simulation game, still today can you find the intro of the expansion, "DEFIANCE"? I can find it here on youtube, but in german only...
I have the GOG version which is the deluxe edition and comes with the Defiance expansion so I should be able to find it when I'm back. This movie was extracted from the embedded player executable and converted to mp4 and played in vlc which upscaled the playback
I remember this game, it was brilliant!
It's still one my favourites, flying an actual large corvette class ship rather than a fighter, Newtonian physics and the backstory, amazing game!
The graphics were so much better in my memory! 😅
Ah yes, time will do that, but when it was first released I bet they looked amazing!
It's been decades since I've played this. Never got too far as I started playing mmos. I dug out my old CD's and was considering getting this working in an XP VM. Something in actual 3d space flight (assuming free flight mode) is hard to wrap your head around.
Played it to completion a couple if times, it's a fav of mine, so long overdue for a third time! I'm using the GOG version (used to have the big box retail version), but PC Gaming Wiki has instructions for installing the CD retail version on 64 bit versions of Windows, so you can skip the VM if you prefer. You can use nGlide or dgVoodoo2 to provide a glide wrapper to make it look as nice as possible. It just has to be run at 30Hz otherwise the PBC's don't do damage. I should add a setup guide to my website soon. It's tricky to stay orientated in free flight mode but you can normally dip in and out as needed and stay in assisted thruster mode the vast majority of time and all the autopilots help massively!
I've put together a quick setup guide on my website, if you're ever tempted to jump back into it! 😀www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/post/independence-war-running-in-windows-10
Wow, the space scenes and CGI interiors look straight out of Babylon 5, love it! Wonder if they hired some of the same people for these cinematics.
