Stop Fearing. Get Ahead
Feeling stuck? Thinking that things won't work out? The opposite of optimism, pessimism is still a type of "wishful thinking." In the case of pessimism, or not believing that you can impact your life positively, however, this is holding you back. Drop the pessimism. Move ahead.

What Spiritual People Did Before Meditation

Before Eastern meditation came to the West, mystics and spiritual people were still experiencing heightened and ecstatic states of consciousness. Most notably, we find that multiple founders of Western spiritual traditions were hypnotists. Here, we explore that secret history of Western spirituality.

I am very glad to see you back and posting these again
Thank you, Praxius. Yes, I'm trying to keep more of a regular schedule. I'm finding that just talking about things I've been thinking about is the best way to do that.
Talking sense. Thank you🏵
Thank you!
I found some other materials which may assist with taking a practice of "contemplating mortality" to a new level: Urantia Papers 87-88 and the song Empire of Dust by PEAKi. Sincerely, GH from Gostlin St.
Thank you.
Very cool, thank you🥱One nation under a groove🏵
@oddpersona22, that's the idea. Thanks for your comment.
There are so many layers to this video that invite deep reflection. First, it’s refreshing to hear someone address the idea of "killing the ego", a truly Sisyphean task. I wholeheartedly agree that our focus should be on affirming ourselves rather than negating who we are. Beyond that, the emphasis on reclaiming pagan values is incredibly compelling, especially in a world that often demands conformity to systems that would never fully embrace us. This perspective is both bold and necessary. Amazing video!
Thank you, Lua. I appreciate your kind words. :)
Intuition led me here, posted 3 years ago and is 20:24 in lenght, which is the current year
I love you're channel keep pursing what you do. Sometimes things are so advanced the common collective can't be bothered or understand. The key is for to keep moving forward keep spreading light and pure knowledge. Please keep working on your channel. I own both your books and you've helped me so much. This must be for a niche audience but with head work and commitment you'll continue to make progress. I saw with my heart that I believe in you
Thank you for your encouragement, Patrick. That means a lot. I'm very happy to hear that my books have been of benefit to you as well. That is all a writer can hope for.
Much love and respect Angel... I love the contribution from your cat too.
Thank you, Daniel. My cat's meows are always the best part for me. She seems to be extra talkative when I record anything. :)
It's good to see you back, Angel.
Thanks, Alan. I'm planning to release more videos soon. :)
I suspect the ceremonies of the mystery schools including today's representations can lead the candidates into a hypnotic state and therefore influence the subconscious in order to effect one's character in a positive way. It was no doubt much more powerful when fasting and vigils were employed before hand. Also, Lectio Divina was employed in Catholic Monasteries as early as the 6th century and all the way back to Origen in the 3rd century. Also, the Orthodox Christians were using yJesus Prayer going back, as far as we know, to the early sixth century, with Diadochos. Not sure how much those made it into the mainstream or unfortunately, how many today don't use some for a spiritual practice to realize divine union.
Yes, I think you are right. I used to stay in a Benedictine monastery for a week or so, annually, and first heard of Lectio Divina. I write a little about it in an upcoming book. It's a very helpful practice.
I think Angel is one of the only people online talking about "self help" who isn't just full of hot air.
Thank you, Daniel. There's a lot of hot air out there but I'm trying not to add to that. :)
Thank you I needed this. 😌👍🏼
You're so welcome!
Glad to see your vids are back

Hello Angel, it has been a long time. It is so good to see you, brother.
Thank you, Gregory. I appreciate you saying that. It has been a long time, indeed. :)
@@AngelMillar-TransformingChaos you are most welcome, brother.
the Rite of Memphis-Misraim was transmogrified and maintained even in America according to masons themselves. This is mentioned on their websites just google it and sift through.
I forget her name, but one woman accused Cagliostro of sexual assaulting her and of practicing of black magic. The note to her account is in the reference material located in Lynn Brunet's heartbreaking PhD thesis about the phenomenon of the "starving artist" and depictions of traumatic initiation and dissociation in the work of contemporary artists, as well as the presence of masonic art in contemporary culture. Brunet's thesis also autobiographically details her own intensely traumatic and horrifying experiences endured at the hands of her own family members and their cronies within an spurious, criminal and unsanctioned masonic lodge of Australia. Her newest book is an important examinationn of Carl Jung's alchemically and masonically inspired traumatic diaries and visionary art as depicted in Jung's 'Red Book'. Brunet shows how Jung's writings and paintings clearly reflect the smbolism and rites used in the Scottish Rite and Memphis and Misraim of the 19th century, but in a deeply spurious and criminal form. Brunet parallels this examination of Jung's own traumatic visions (or memories of childhood) with some of her own horrifying experiences of being tortured in her family's spurious and criminal masonic lodge in Australia. I understand Brunet's story to be true since my own family endured the tortures of being raised in a pedophilic and criminal masonic cult that subjected children to horrifiying initiation rituals here on the east coast of the United States. I hope you will take the time to read the important work of Lynn Brunet and others who also counter the strictly spiritualized and idealizing view of certain characters and sects within the masonic, early and contemporary christian, mithraic, gnostic, and other traditions. There is certainly a dark undercurrent of black magic, ritual traumatic initiation and criminality practiced within certain sects and versions of these traditions. Thank you and take good care now. Yours sincerely, John Lawlor
Connections between Chaos Magick and the New Thought Movement (Neville Goddard. e.g.,) are very helpful to understand. As you say they have so much in common. Thank you in particular for pointing out Frater U.D. and Israel Regardie as playing important roles in developing of this understanding.

The mental discipline to maintain a positive attitude and visualize the future positively IS a discipline. As Neville G says, the mind is an unruly animal.
This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard!
I just returned to chaos magick after about a 10 year hiatus. I didn't think of the social political situation that birthed Chaos Magick in the first place, but thinking about my situation now...I'm a South African and in this post covid world, we are experiencing extreme political uproar and black outs. Funny how the more things change...
Shalom Brothers-in-laws. 🌹
Really enjoyed this, thank you.
…. Weird mental stamp collecting of symbols….. this phenomenon has never received such an apt description. I’ve sometimes struggled with some of the esoteric “classics” which ultimately end up being little more than treatises of comparative religion and do not attempt useful analysis of the symbols.
Looking forward to this.
Thanks. :)
Thank you for this, Mr. Millar. I found it quite interesting and beneficial. Particularly the part about the elements. It helped me to realize that I'm a bit more balanced than I once gave myself credit for. I look forward to your next video.

I was always aware of the Jewish Kabbalah as a stand-alone belief system, however I was unaware of the full extent of its influence on Western Esotericism until fairly recently, since I have begun delving deeper into the subject. Another fascinating installment, Angel!
Thank you!
I’m really enjoying this discussion. It’s wonderful. Where I live Christmas is a bigger deal than Thanksgiving. We, too, had ham and also turkey for our Christmas meal.
Depends on what the individual is comfortable with
Never knew freemasons practiced chaos magic 🤔
Well... Freemasonry and chaos magic are totally different. The point of the video is that the founder of chaos magic (Peter J. Carroll), and of the chaos magic Order The Illuminates of Thanateros, claims, at least in a diagram of the prehistory of the IOT, that it is descended from Freemasonry as well as from numerous other sources (John Dee, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, shamanism, sorcery, etc.). So, I suppose you could say that, via Carroll, chaos magicians claim to be practicing Freemasonry. ;)
Thank you for your work, providing more coherent historical context in only a few minutes than I could expect. Do you know of any meaningful bridge between Austin Osman Spare and Freemasonry? I recognize Liber Null as the inception of the recognized era, but Freemasonry begins centuries earlier, and Spare in between. I'd appreciate your view. p.s. When I inform clients, I share King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. My ommission of Craftsman feels now a grave error. Book purchase initiated. 🙏
It fascinates me how the deeper one looks into esoteric history the less is really known, especially by those who are supposedly initiated. Carrol's diagram seems to have no understanding of Indo-European religions as being neither shamanistic nor "witchcraft". Some people even claim that even the Kabbalah originates with Druids and rune masters who went underground during the spread of Christianity (the Tree of life as a symbol having much more to do with Druidry, or the 9 realms of the Yggrdrasil, than Hebrew tribal religion from the Levant) or, alternatively, that the Semitic polytheist pantheon reasserts itself in the form of the Sephirots. Then there is the claim the Freemasonry goes back, at least as far as the Charter of 926A.D., or that it succeeds the Greco-Roman mystery schools. From there things only get wilder with such ideas as the inner-earth, Atlanteans and Shakespeare being the Grandmaster of "The Brothers of the Cross" and a close collaborator of John Dee and the writer and one who enciphered the King James Bible. The internet certainly serves to shed more light on this history but it also muddies the waters terribly. Who knows if we will ever uncover the truth, save that which is within, of course.
Well, clearly people will say any nonsense. As for the history of these tradition, scholarly books have been written, separating the wheat from the chaff. They aren't that difficult to find.
@@AngelMillar-TransformingChaos Your faith in academe is evidently greater than mine. In any case I'm slowly becoming quite ou fait with the standard history of western esotericism, but it's precisely where the standard history falls short that things become juicy, there in lies the danger. Also it was because of masons giving credence to their more speculative origins that we got such exiting orders as the Golden Dawn. I rather think that modern masons outwardly apparent commitment to the standard narrative is holding back their sense of spiritual adventure and giving that space over to more spurious scholars.
Freemasonry is only as old as the 18th century
Thanks, very informative. Those blackouts must have been scary. Subbing
Perhaps.
May i ask something ? If you have the time ?
Sure.
Commenting for the Al-go-rhythym. As always your work is appreciatedm
What are your opinions related to initiation into new spiritual traditions that don't have formal roots that date back to antiquity, but form themselves upon the expression of perennial principles - separate from new age, I might add? You touch upon this in this talk with Chaos Magic a little, but I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject.
Excellent question, and one of the most important for us to think about today. It really depends on whether the leaders (in particular), (1) possess real knowledge and wisdom, (2) are thoughtful, (3) can truly guide people in a positive direction, (4) aren't out to exploit some or all of their members or disciples, (5) allow and encourage freedom of conscience and thought, and (6) set a good example (including having a relatively descent life outside of spirituality, with healthy relationships and friendships). I would add that these groups or leaders should have gone beyond parroting what other groups, spiritual leaders, and authors say, and should be able to articulate a worldview that is unique but yet timeless. Simply having a different opinion on which Hebrew letter goes on what path of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life is not enough. Regarding chaos magic, I was rereading Liber Null a couple of years ago and was struck by the many insightful and prophetic comments about out society. However, I don't see that as much in Carroll's later books. Chaos magic is an interesting phenomenon. it essentially takes the approach of mastery -- experimentation and going beyond convention. That is excellent. The major problem is that the vast majority of chaos magicians haven't mastered magic or in anything else. Unless the practitioner has achieved mastery, this mindset only supports the excess of modernity, in particular, the belief that we should just do whatever we like and that we don't need to learn anything properly. I hope that helps.
@@AngelMillar-TransformingChaos It absolutely helps, and I feel the same way. It kind of goes hand in hand with what you said in another video regarding spiritual pseudo-gurus and being able to identify frauds. So going off of these guidelines, the ones stated in your first paragraph, what would you consider constitutes a new proper spiritual tradition? Is it a new way of communication with the Divine altogether? Or would you consider variations of the same tradition constitute themselves as relatively new (Latin mass vs. English mass, for a small example)? Regarding the second paragraph, that's also what I've noticed, not just with new spiritual traditions, but with certain initiates into old ones as well, that there's an expectation among the neophytes, so to speak, that they're going to "speedrun" the initiation and achieve mastery much faster than is actually viable. I think a lot of that comes with the commodification of most non-spiritual identities creating that mindset among people who then apply it to things that require a lot more longevity and sustenance, but I also think that this shouldn't discredit the actual masters of those traditions - new or old. It's a tricky situation.
regarding what constitutes a proper spiritual tradition, I would say it has to possess real insight into the Divine, the archetypal, and have a sense of natural law. This can come about through years of reflection outside, or inside, of a tradition, though there has to be some way of conveying these insights, of course. Ritual has been one way. Personal teaching or guidance has been another. One big problem, whether in mainstream religion or the occult, is that most of the teachings and symbols become interpreted politically. The point is to focus on improving oneself in line with natural law, and thus to align oneself with the divine. Since all religions and spiritual traditions can be perverted and turned towards politics (and we see this in Catholicism, Anglicanism, and the occult, as well in other traditions) the question might not be lineage but the insight of the members, especially the leaders. And, today, I would suggest that we need to work on improving ourselves not just spiritually but also physically and mentally (and by "mentally" I mean understanding culture, philosophy, etc.) much as Plato suggested or as we see embodied by the higher type of warrior. Unfortunately, from what I have seen, we should always be very cautious of gurus and spiritual leaders. People are human, and in those sorts of elevated positions, history has shown, it is often too tempting for people to exploit their positions or to lose their integrity.
I have come across a fake, that has been energetically stealing from genuine people. The lengths this person has gone is unavailable.
Unfortunately, this is not that uncommon. I'm glad you've been able to see through this individual and I wish you luck on your spiritual journey.
In Sweden, Västerbotten in the beginning of the 1900 they did julafton (christmas-evening) with the Jul-goat. Some neighbour dressed up as a the jul-goat, took some wodden logs and smashed them at the door, and then threw in the presents in the house in a frightening way for the kids and then run away. There was no s:t Claus, but there was Vättar and some kind of tomtar that was supposed to get as an offering a plate with riceporridge outside the door, the night before Christmas, so that the would not bring in misfortune to the house.
Sounds like a very intriguing custom. :)
