Pink Floyd: Animals - My 2nd favourite Pink Floyd album behind The Wall
Pink Floyd's 1977 album 'Animals' has been going up in my estimation recently, to a point where it is getting very close to my favourite album, The Wall. In today's video, I discuss my 'Animals' story and what I think about the album, compared to the other three; The Wall, Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, in the classic 4 Pink Floyd albums.

Slade are a band that have been with me since the start - but despite other artists, I've never really taken time to listen to their albums in much detail? In this video, I ask the question of whether I should change this, as well as other thoughts on just how much music is out there to consume! 00:00 Introduction 00:44 My Slade Journey 07:06 So much music to listen to - so little time to do it!
Chris Rea: Tennis - My favourite early period Chris Rea album
Переглядів 9414 днів тому
Chris Rea's third album, Tennis, released in 1980, is my favourite of his early era; which I classify as his first six albums before he achieved significant chart success with 1985's Shamrock Diaries and the albums that followed. In today's video, I discuss why Tennis is my favourite Chris Rea album of this period, as well as some musings on the other Chris Rea albums I have heard. 00:00 Intro ...
Scorpions: Return To Forever (2015) - Their best album since Crazy World
Переглядів 197Місяць тому
After the release of Crazy World in 1990, Scorpions' output faltered slightly, with all three subsequent 90s releases failing to garner much attention: Face The Heat, Pure Instinct, and Eye II Eye. 2004's Unbreakable and 2010's Sting In The Tail were seen as a return to form; however, I believe that Return To Forever, released in 2015, tops all of these releases. In today's video, I discuss why...

Neil Diamond's first 8 studio albums are notoriously difficult to find on CD. Fortunately, the two CD boxsets 'The Bang Years 1966-1968' and 'Play Me: The Complete Uni Studio Recordings' contain all of the songs from these first 8 albums, released between 1966 and 1972 under the Bang Records and Uni Records labels. Does KISS' Early 80s Output Rival Their Iconic 70s Era?

Following the classic era of the first six KISS albums, including two Alive albums, KISS's popularity plummeted, along with a perceived drop-off in the quality of its music. In today's video, I discuss and re-evaluate four early 80s albums from KISS. 00:00 Introduction 02:26 Lick It Up 07:21 Unmasked 11:50 Animalize 15:17 Creatures Of The Night 20:05 Conclusion
Is PRICE the HIGHEST PRIORITY in your CD/RECORD COLLECTING buying decisions?
Переглядів 734 місяці тому
When I buy music, CDs or records, one of my main trigger points to buy something is when it's the right price - the right price being one I'm willing to pay and also believing that I've got a good deal. However we are all different, do you use price as a factor when making your CD/record collecting buying decisions? Or any form of collecting for that matter... DVDs, games, books... 00:00 Introd...
Are the 'classic albums' FAR SUPERIOR versus rock bands' other output? | Unscripted Discussion
Переглядів 2075 місяців тому
This is an unscripted music discussion inspired by a comment made by Phil Aston from Now Spinning Magazine when ranking the albums of heavy metal giants Judas Priest. Phil ranks albums based on how often he listens to them. I'm not sure I agree with that logic (however nothing wrong with it!), especially given I listen to some albums a lot despite them not being my favourite. This discussion po...

Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show - Neil Diamond | Album Review
Surely the most underrated band of all time.
You've got a lot more listening to do.
Listened back to this, a few months, after not hearing it for a long time. I like Floyd, but I don’t sit and listen to them, really.. Animals is a great album - as are WYWH and DSOTM
This is my favourite Floyd album. Sheep is my favourite track. Cheers
Pink Floyd 🙂
Yes, but Slade Alive should be your first listen.
Definitively...the early to mid 70s albums are fantastic !!!
🎾 Chris Rea is a great artist. I’ve everything he’s done on Warner from the debut to the last one, King of The Beach. Tennis is great, I love Wired to The Moon, Shamrock Diaries, On The Beach. I’ve been a fan since 1986 when I saw him live at Slane Castle supporting Queen, which was my first gig ever. Elton John producer Gus Dudgeon produced the first two albums. Only With You on Tennis is a great cheesy soul belter! Raincoat and a Rose on Deltics is like a Neil Diamond song. Deltics itself is a great track. Candles, Bombollini, Josephine, Steel River, It’s all Gone, Loving You Again, all fantastic. I could go on and on. Hats off to you for highlighting Chris Rea! 🎾
I think Water Sign and Wired to the moon are fantastic albums. Water Sign was basically a bunch of demos as you said, but some times the demo versions are actually better than the polished versions - and while we never know how it would have sounded in the latter form, its sublime how it is in my opinion. Especially Nothings happening by the sea, Candles, Love's strange ways, Heartbeat and Midnight Blue are absolutely fantastic live tracks. Same goes for Wired to the moon - i think its a wonderful album from the first track to the last, and many of the songs are absolute belters live. On the beach that you also mentioned is in my opinion one of the greatest albums of all time - up there with the likes of Brothers in arms, Master of Puppets etc. Chris managed to create such an atmosperich, moody and laid-back feeling and sounding album in On the beach its mind blowing. No other album relaxes me and takes me to a completely another place when i close my eyes while listening to it. A masterpiece.
The first three albums with Uli Roth are probably my favorites 😅. Such a great band (also underrated), i know by heart all the albums up to 1993 "Face The Heat" but since then i've only really listened to the last one when it came out a couple of years ago, now i'll make it up. PS "Tokio Tapes" is one of the best live albums of the genre in that late '70s era alongside records like "Unleashed in the East" by Judas Priest or "Live and Dangerous" by Thin Lizzy.
Wish I could find a live performance of "GYPSY LIFE".......
I’ve just checked their setlist.fm page, and it doesn’t look like they have ever performed that track live, at least not recorded on that site 😕
Informative video. I’m Neil fan.
Thank you
I really enjoyed this video Toby! If David Gates has Take The Last Train on it, give that a listen.
Thank you James! I will have a check, if not I’ll add that track to my list.
Best make up album -Destroyer Best non make up - Revenge

Probably have to say Alive, but RARO will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first album I ever bought

Alive! End of story.

I don’t really like anything after Music from The Elder, but, like you, I can change my mind any day of the week as to what my favorite album is. Gene’s solo album is awesome.
I enjoy Gene’s solo album. Admittedly I haven’t listened to much of the solo albums from the other 3 members. I reckon I’d change my mind between 4, the first two, Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over. Nothing wrong with Dressed to Kill or Love Gun, but I think those other four are a cut above. I’ve never listened to Music from the Elder. Is it worth a listen? If you’re interested in more of my Kiss content, see this playlist: KISS ua-cam.com/play/PLRFuxnkazTpoSLelb1V1c6Wnst3ULDA0U.html
The 1st album is killer but I do like dressed to kill
Both great choices. If you’re interested in more of my Kiss content, see this playlist: KISS ua-cam.com/play/PLRFuxnkazTpoSLelb1V1c6Wnst3ULDA0U.html
Creatures is their best record and Lick It Up is on par or better than Hotter Than Hell, Dressed To Kill, RARO, and Love Gun. Unmasked is underrated, but not great. Elder is their 3rd or 4th worst record, with Animalize being dead last.
Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Preview of the next few albums you’ll listen to: Asylum, my least favourite album of theirs. Crazy Nights has a super emotional song on it called Reason To Live which is the highlight, and Hot In The Shade, this album was infamously made up of essentially demos. But, Forever, Hide Your Heart, Rise To It, and Little Caesar all slap 👿🌠😼👽
Look forward to hearing them. Thanks for your comment
@@tobyjonesmusic No worries mate! Speaking of 80s KISS, have you ever tried Smashes, Thrashes, and Hits? It was a compilation album with two bonus tracks, they had Eric Carr sing Beth and record new drum tracks as a way of preventing royalty payments to Peter Criss
What a nice retro video review, thanks Toby!
Thank you Sean, great to hear from you!
Great review! Warriors, Cowboy Song, Fight or Fall, so many great songs on this album. Never a dull moment. By the way, the picture on the thumbnail of this video, where can I find it?
Thanks for your comment. I have scanned Google again and I can't find the picture on the thumbnail unfortunately :(
@@tobyjonesmusic no worries, I was just amazed because I don’t think I’ve seen that photo before. Really cool shot of the band.
Thin lizzy e uma boa banda pena que não teve reconhecimento a indústria musical e uma prostituta difícil de de se agradar !
And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind is my number 1 & If I Never Knew Your Name is number #2.
Hermosoooooooo
I love both of the Elvis RPHO albums equally tbh
100% it’s got to be for the right price, if I want something and can’t find it cheaper than the going price, if it’s reasonable I’ll pay, but if something is too much I’ll wait until I find one for cheaper same as you lol 👍 great vid and discussion enjoyed it !
Thanks mate 👍🏻
The Original Album Collection Boxsets are for the most part brilliant for buying CDs in abundance and I have a few of them, including Dio, Meat Loaf, Judas Priest and a-Ha, which are the ones I have, and I think they are great and sometimes quite cheap to buy for five CDs, but they do have their flaws with their packaging, but they are nice to have and they have great variety of any artists you like. I do often like to buy cheap albums for less money, but sometimes buy new if I love the artist or band, but what you said about the standard or deluxe albums, and price of them, like for example, Invincible Shield by Judas Priest, I paid out for the standard version over the deluxe version, because I can't be asked to pay out more for three extra tracks, when I can pay out for just eleven tracks, and that was just annoying to me. Sometimes I do like a bargain on music, especially from online like Discogs, HMV and other things and it depends on what's available at that time.
Thanks Lewis, enjoyed reading your thoughts on this topic
Great video my man, thoroughly enjoyed it. And yes can confirm you are tight 😂
🤣🤣🤣 Thank you
Great video thank you - apologies for commenting on an older video but I only just found your channel today. I bought this box set around 10-11 years ago I guess, and it’s really good. I think if anyone bought this they’d have pretty much all the really essential albums by the Boss, and then if they wanted to explore some more they could go from there, or maybe stop by the “Tracks” 4CD box set on the way. Do you like Rory Gallagher? You can pick up a 5CD collection under the Original Album Classics banner for around £19.99. I think there was one for ZZ Top and numerous other artists, and you’re absolutely right, they are a great way to begin collecting an artist. Probably better to get when they first come out if you can, as when they’re out of print they increase in price quite a bit. Hopefully record companies don’t stop doing these kind of bundle releases in the streaming age, although I’ve noticed that new CD prices have crept up quite a bit during the last 12 months or so, so I doubt we’ll see these kind of sets being as cheap as they were a few years ago.
Thanks very much for your comment (no problem with it being on an older video!) I haven't explored Rory Gallagher's music but have heard good things about it. I will have to add him to my ever expanding list :)
@@tobyjonesmusic Thank you for replying:) That’s the problem isn’t it? I tell myself “OK time to stop collecting”, and then it’s “I’ll just get this and then I’m done!” 😂 I can’t remember exactly how I got into Rory Gallagher, but his music is really awesome. So sad that he died young; he was by all accounts a really nice, humble guy who was very likely one of the best guitarists ever.
Nobody writes like him. Nobody sings lke him. It does not matter if one disagrees.
Remove Mother and throw the album in garbage.
it never matters what neil sings to me i just LOVE ALL OF NEILS MUSIC TO ME NEIL IS JUST PERFECT!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
AC/DC released Black Ice in 2008, Imo this album is better than their classics Highway To Hell and Back In Black
I’ve never got round to listening to it in full, but I really like the 4-5 tracks that I’ve heard.
There are still great albums being released, but the market is so flooded now with artists that it takes a little longer to sift through the junk to find the gems.
Great point
In my opinion, it depends on what you love, because I was born in '94, and I can name a few artists like Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden and Saxon for example, and I prefer their post 2000's works the most, as it's my period for their music at the time, and I must say that I like Judas Priest's new album the most out of everything that they have done as it's an incredible album, but again, that is just my opinion, however, I still love their classic albums as well, but it's always their post 2000's works that I listen to from those bands, and especially Bon Jovi for me. Yes, classic rock bands are incredible to some extent and others can be worse than others. I feel the same about tanking albums too, because in my view, I rank albums from artists that I love the most, like I love Bon Jovi's This House Is Not For Sale as my #1, despite people not putting it as high as me, or Iron Maiden's A Matter Of Life And Death as my #1, despite people not putting as high as me, either, and I could name a few more, like I could have chosen Judas Priest's Invincible Shield as my #1 album, but I don't think I could have put it above 'British Steel' and 'Painkiller', but it's just that if I rank them, it's usually albums that I love, but some I don't like, I just put at the bottom and list them in terms of which one is the worst album, and the others that get better as I list them, but it's just my opinion.
Thanks for watching Lewis, some interesting points raised in your comment.
Hi
👋🏻
A top 10 from the 60s, then the 70s, then the 80s would be good ? ❤
Top 10 songs? Yes I can do that 👍🏻
Thanks for the review (even if I have already ordered my copy, having only just discovered its existance the other day). I had the very great pleasure of booking Jake Thackray at the Manchester University Folk Club on a couple of occasions (1974-1977) and immediately became a big fan. I am expecting to find several references to Brassens in this book. He was always talking about how great Brassens was. By some strange stroke of fate I ended up going to live in France and therefore having to learn French. Thrackray is a gateway drug to Brassens. Thackray's translation/adaption of "Le Gorillle" could only have been done by someone who was an excellent poet and songwriter in his own right.
Sad wings of Destiny in this box set has the correct running order. The vinyl album always started with Prelude. All standalone CD pressings have the order wrong!!
I like Bread, got all 6 albums, very easy to listen too, similar to America. All the songs gradually grow on you. However, agree some artists the best of albums are enough. Supertramp is a great example. All their best songs on 2 best of albums with a couple of exceptions. Also The Coral and Fleetwood Mac but I don't buy many compilations.
Great review I enjoyed it mate- Jake is a big hero of mine
Thanks for taking the time to review our book and spreading the word about Jake. It’s now available as an audiobook as well, on Audible, read by me - something your grandad might enjoy, if he now struggles with reading?
Wait... You can read?
I need my glasses!
