Prostate Cancer Recovery Diary
United States
Приєднався 25 лип 2020
This is my video diary of my recovery from prostate cancer. On July 1, 2020, I underwent a radical prostatectomy and removal of 12 neighboring lymph nodes.
I am a prostate cancer survivor, writer, musician, cyclist, and law professor, in that order.

Micrometastasis: my cancer has escaped the area where my prostate once resided and is floating around my body contemplating just how to kill me. Once prostate cancer metastasizes, the chance of living more than 5 years drops to around 25%-30%. Because mine is in the nano stage, my chances may be a bit better. I will continue to update this diary as I learn more. John
A Return to the Scene of the Infamous Deer Crash

First journey to visit the spot where a month and a half ago I collided with a deer, broke nearly every bone across the top of my torso, and punctured both lungs. It's great to be back in the saddle!

1 month to the day from my close encounter with the deer. My 13 (!) broken ribs have healed sufficiently so that swinging a leg over a bike didn't hurt too much. :) My broken acromion and clavicle are healing, too. I'm still experiencing substantial pain, but I'm back in the saddle!

Another recovery challenge! Yes, 18 broken bones and both lungs punctured, courtesy of colliding with a deer while I was cycling. As best I know, the deer survived relatively unscathed.

Did you have bone metastasis with your prostate?
No. My cancer, radiation treatment, and COVID sufficiently compromised my immune system that a trivial tooth infection morphed into osteomyelitis.
Thanks for sharing your experience..
You are most welcome.
Thank you for your entire diary. It has given me incentive to be more proactive relating to my own PC (currently on Active Surveillance, Gleason 6, DECIPHER 0.2, PSA 4-5), and less trusting of my own health care system. Be well, and play well (guitar, bike, and everything else!!!)
Thank you!

You are simply sounding good! So good on you!
Thank you!
I’m so sorry you’re Having tinnitus. I also have been having tinnitus for a while now too. It’s really annoying.
Sorry to learn this. Take care.
I feel for you. My tinnitus has gotten worse and worse over the years, and probably should go for hearing aids. I certainly say "WHAT?" a lot these days. But as my buddy Randy Cobb asked me "what note is your tinnitus? Mine's a B. You can tune your guitars to it.
I figure the pitch of my tinnitus tonight when I'm playing guitar! I've long had mild tinnitus. But within days of beginning to take the offending medication, it reached screaming status. It's really, really loud.
Darrell, mine is an A. I always suspected that you were at least a step sharper than I am.
Will you ride your bike with hearing aids? Wondering about wind noise and if it’s even necessary.
I've also been wondering about this. I'll find out!
You are one cool "cat"!! How many lives have you used up with your encounters (or rounds of) cancer, COVID, or large horned mammals?? It's possible I've missed something. Another question. Is Irene still alive? Has she made it to 100??
Thank you, my friend! Irene turned 102 on January 30!
be safe my friend
Thank you!
Happy New Year my friend. A lot of people have a difficult time understanding why I say getting diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Learning to live in the moment and find joy in every one is why. Much love for the coming year.
Happy New Year, my friend!
Happy New Year!!! Thank you for sharing.
@@johnbeck6506 Thank you! Happy New Year!
Happy new year, John. Nothing will help you more than your own positivity. And, believe me, it helps everyone else too.
Thank you,@@daveroyle6310!
Can't wait to get back to commuting!
Keep me posted and good luck!
3rd week out from my radical prostatectomy. Still a lot of cramping/pain when sitting. Can't imagine getting back on my racing saddle right now. But missing the bike a great deal.
I found the bike saddle to be more comfortable than a conventional chair! I use saddles with a large cutout. Please keep me posted. You can email me at johnthomasguitar at gmail dot com.
Thank you for your update. As said before, your positivity is incredible and very inspiring. We have two things in common, no prostate and a love of cycling but I have to say you are still doing more miles than me. Long may it continue.
Thank you, kind sir!
are you sure that is an antibiotic??? looks like Reposado if you ask me... Just sayin
You are so strong JT❤️
As are you, Katie!
Somehow, a thumbs up reaction doesn't seem appropriate. Thanks for the update, JT. Your courage, determination and optimism are truly inspiring. Rave on, brother!Y
Thank you, my brother!
The Great Divide Route is no joke. I did the TransAm in the summer of 2022 and crossed paths with GDR riders several times. They did not appear to be having as much fun as me!
Oh, I had great fun. But when I began to get bored and began to think of my legacy, especially because of my health challenges, I decided that 1,000 miles served my soul's yearning.
I've been told riding for 2-3 months post-surgery. But given the incontinence I'm experiencing; a bike ride might not be a good idea. I'm hoping to do another long bike ride (I did the TransAm in 2022) or complete the Triple Crown (PCT/CDT/AT). I have only to do the CDT to reach that goal. Time will tell.
Fabulous cycling accomplishments! Thanks for sharing them with us. Post-prostatectomy my bicycle saddle, with its center cutout, was the most comfortable perch I could find. Really. I was most comfortable and happiest on my bicycle. Please keep me posted on your recovery.
Love it. Great stories.
Thanks, Dan!
A carbon fiber Banner ! Very cool Batman. I’d forgotten about that. Hope your struggle is hitting a plateau.
@@danmoschet9568 maybe a plateau, it's not clear. But the trend is not pretty. How are you, my friend?

I kinda sorta feel like I’m crazy, too, my friend!

Thank you, Dave!
Godspeed, brother!
Thank you, my brother!
I had problem with my bladder after surgery. I am doing good now put riding a bike really cause flare up. Does riding a bike cause u any urinary issues.
Bicycling hasn't caused me urinary issues.
Great video! Very inspirational! This Friday is my 4 week post op point and I'm looking forward to getting back in the saddle as well! Did you have any issues with wearing pads (Depends/etc.) with your chamois?
Thanks! At 1-month post-surgery, I wasn't wearing pads. Plus, what's that chamois for? :)

Thank you, my brother.
Glad you're recovering well buddy!
Thank you.
Hi John sorry to hear about your crash but it looks like you’ve made a great recovery. I’ve been following you since I was diagnosed in January and your story helped me a lot, especially as I wanted to get back on my bike. If you don’t mind can I ask you about your radiotherapy. Did you have ADT as well and, if so, what drug did they give you. They’ve started me on Bicalutimide (cassodex). I just wanted to chat to fellow cyclists to see how it affected them best Rgds Frank
Frank, did you have surgery! I had a radical prostatectomy on July 1, 2020. Then 8 weeks of daily radiation therapy from late September through mid-December. No drug treatment ..yet. I'm happy to chat. Email me at johnthomasguitar at gmail dot com.
Back in the saddle! Good for you John!
Thanks, Jeff!

Enjoy your videos. I too am a prostate cancer survivor. Had it removed in 2007. Then had cancer come back in 2010 (left over cancer cells they guessed) so underwent 37 radiation treatments. Have been good since then. Hope to do TD in 2023. Maybe we will toe the line together and march south!
Wow you are amazing I know you can do it !!
Thank you!
Good luck on your recovery. Finished my radiation in 2010 for prostate. Planning on TD 2023. Hope to see you.
Thanks, Mark I hope to see you on the TD next year, too.
Hi, John, What a hero you are ! More hardship, more power. Hope you will recover soon. Dave, UMGF.
Thanks, Dave!
Feel better soon John!
Two hands on the wheel, John!!!
Ha! Good advice. :)
Happy New Year!!!! I had a prostatectomy in March then I found your original videos and was encouraged by them to keep working out and do way too many triathlons this year instead of taking it easy. Thanks for the motivation and for sharing your journey.
Thanks, John! I'm happy to have helped. A lot of folks have contacted me about this UA-cam diary and thanked me. Something good has come from something bad! It's now well established that exercise helps in our journey with cancer. Here's the latest, prostate cancer-specific study: jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2785734
You're a beast. Thanks for motivation. I am two weeks post surgery and hesitant to even think about riding. Did you leak while riding?
I'm sure that early on I did. That's what the chamois is for. :) I found a bike saddle the most comfortable place to sit post-surgery. Only your sit bones contact it, especially if your saddle has a cutout. Go for it!
