Miniature DIY Faux “Sugar” Skeletons & Skulls using craft purchases, paint & trimmings for display
Hello & Welcome.
This is an Do-it-Yourself project decorating miniature plastic craft skeletons & skulls to look like the sugar ones during the Day of the Dead celebrations for display in small scenes & fall festivals.
Acrylic white & cream paints are used to replicate the sugar cane or alfenique confection. Mini chocolate skulls could be made with brown paints.
The video shows purchased craft dollar store plastic skeletons 5 3/4 to 6 inches. They are available online, sometimes in a pack or in a garland. Skulls approximately 1 inch may be purchased separately.
The display is 1:12th scale.
I have previous videos showing the festive circle skirt, back pack, candles, wrought iron candle holders & paper roses accessories shown in this video.
This historical based project has inspired me to make a future video on wild marigolds for my wildflower series.
Materials & suggested items for project:
[1] skeleton - flexible plastic, approximately 6 inches length, skulls about 1” diameter
[2] paint - acrylic paints in whites, creams & browns plus other colors for decoration, glass paints & paintbrushes
[3] markers - permanent, fine & ultra fine in black & assorted colors
[4] glue - PVA clear dry, like Aleen’s original tacky glue or others, matte sealer
[5] containers to hold glue or paints, like a bottle cap & toothpick applicators
[6] scissors, craft knife & mat
[7] tweezers
[8] pliers - small, jewelry
[9] toothpicks
[10] copy paper
[11] fabric - cotton, thin polyester blends or felt for clothing or purchase items for 6” dolls or try some scrapbook stickers
[12] pencil & ruler
[13] drill - small, 1/32 or 1/16” bit
[14] stylus & mat
[15] trimmings - beads, jewelry findings like jump rings, thin wire, thread, elastic, ribbons, jewel embellishments, holiday ball top holders, etc
[16] abrasive paper or sanding stick or fingernail emery board file
[17] sewing thread & needles, pins
Notes:
-most supplies & materials available online or at stores or online or dollhouse miniature shows
-sizes are close approximations
Uses ideas:
miniature diorama displays, Dia de los Muertos & other remembrance commemorations like All Saints, All Souls’, All the Faithfully Departed or other fall themed events, celebrations, festivals & parties or as mini gifts
-- or--
*club projects or activities - for non commercial purposes

Love them xxx❤️
Thank you. These are very inventive and unique.
What a great idea. I have a big dollshouse kit and I want to make a haunted house, but funny. Those skeletons are nice and lovely and not scary. Thank you for the idea.
Thank you, Catherine! I happen to live in a Spanish style home. I would like to have a miniature Spanish home someday. These are perfect DOTD decorations! I love how you made the banner, jewelry and solved the forearm reattachment problem. Lots of creativity! Thanks again! 😊
This is charming. So cute!❤
Oh my goodness the sleeping animals are ADORABLE!! I want to make them in mini for my dioramas and large sizes for my kids lol ♥️😍♥️
These are incredible and I now know what to do with all those caps I’ve been squirrelling away just in case they came in handy. Thank you for the inspiration. They would look good inside clear baubles as a gift for special birthdays and occasions too. ❤
Just an observation as an old timer, I would have painted my eye pupils, then punched them out and shaped gently. Thank you for sharing this craft, we just bought a bunch of the miniature cloche domes, these will be one we will put inside!❤️
Super great idea!🤩thank you for sharing. You have a new subscriber here !
Love this!
Great tutorial
Cute tutorial! Can you please give me more information about the quilter’s pen? Who makes them? I tried looking it up and I can only find an ink pen that writes on fabric. Thanks in advance! I like your use of paper punches too. Looking forward to seeing more videos. 🎃
It is larger than a sewing pin, Dritz company, #133 craft or quilter pins, 1 3/4”
@@catherinebrickner Thank you!
Fabulous!!❤❤❤
This is AWESOME CATHERINE!!!!! YOU Are Very Resourceful and Creative! THIS IS GREAT!!! I Have used Bottle caps for minis before but this LITERALLY TAKES THE CAKE!!!!! Thank you for Sharing!!!
AMAZING! I love your style and techniques! These are so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing this!
I have been dying for some realistic miniature pinecones for 1:12 scale! Thank you for this! They're perfect!
Those came out great. The wick color and using the paint as you did as a flame really gives the illusion that they are burning. Thanks for sharing.
Very cute! I like your brightly colored bottle caps. I have a collection of those, too. Hundreds of them, lol.
Another well done idea for those its and bits that add life.
You have always been so talented!! They look beautiful and can't wait to see the historic home that the silver candlesticks came from. Btw...we have the same hands. ❤ Jenny
Gosh you're patient. I think if l made enough for a quilt l would try putting them on a very fine muslin base!
Thank you for this video. I just came onto it but wondered where is the pattern?
Within the video, maybe try a screen picture
Oh my gosh so adorable and a great way to use bottle caps
I love the rugs, thanks for the video! Can you please tell me what type of yarn works best, acrylic or wool. Also what weight yarn would you use for 1:12 scale? Thanks
Thank you, I tried medium acrylic. Other weights & blends or types may work too, maybe try a test to see what works
Lovely and so clever. A lot easier than polymer clay.
Excelent tutorial🏅
That’s a fancy outhouse😀
Absolutely brilliant! Can’t wait to try this.
Wow!! Thats amazing. 💖💖
My Aunt was really big on yo-yo crafts. I still have some of her runners and placemats I have made tiny yo-yos with the circle method, but I really like the strip method and will definitely try that next time. Thank you so much for sharing. I just love this!!!❤🥰
Brilliant! I've got to try this. Your cakes look gorgeous..love them!❤🥰
All so cute - great gifts too! I make mini cotton wool cakes and use tiny dried camomile flowers to decorate (which can be coloured with watercolour paint to match themes) and tiny nail-art stickers too. Thanks for the inspiration!
Do you have an etsy store? I would just buy these beautiful cakes!!!!!!❤😊
Thank you for the question. I do not have an Etsy store.
Beautiful thankyou so much for sharing , Do you by any chance sell the paper cut outs ? because id love to buy some from you :)
Thank you so much for the question. I do not have online sales.
Also the caps on tubes like ointments and whatever make cute little pots for plants.
What a fantastic idea!! And perfect for crafters like myself who can't keep a polymer clay cake even😆Thank you for sharing your techniques with us❤
That was fun! Thanks for such a good detailed video! Miniature things are always so cute to me but they can be pretty too. These cakes are. Enjoyed the video! ❤️💜💚
