This has been one of my favorite installs in the 80 series since the powertrain rebuild, Having onboard air on demand is critical for offroading! The ARB twin does a really good job on inflating tires, I have compared it side by side with some cheaper external portable air compressors and there's really no comparison. I was able to fill 2 trucks running 33s before the cheaper compressor would f...

Do you how to replace the filler neck pipe?
It should just unbolt from a few places and pull out of the fender from the bottom, I haven't replaced one on an 80, but usually that's the general advice. It may take some creative angles to get it out in one piece.
Toyota really cooked the 80 series with the small condenser. I have a surf where they slung the condenser under the engine and its awesome. With the additon of that extra fan on your 80 series I would also charge the ac and go over to give it more subcooling and to stack more liquid refrigerant in the condenser. Another more expensive route is to replace the condenser with a new direct fit or a much better universal fit micro channel. Your car already has the largest denso compressor offered so replacing that will be fruitless. Another thing you can do is replace the evaporator and TX valve. Toyota at least used off the shelf denso parts so its relatively painless to source. I am lucky with my Hilux surf as toyota slung the condenser under the engine. I removed the twin 7in thermo fans and fit a 14in SPAL fan. replaced the evap and TXV and it really gave it a kick up the ass.
Great tips. I did a lot of AC work before this just to refresh it, but there's still the original condenser on there. I have a new one from Toyota but you bring up a good point on the size of it, I may look for a larger one 🤔
Hey love your videos , what size is the aux fan going to do the same on my 80 series.
This is the one I used, I think a 12 inch would be the max you could fit imo. www.summitracing.com/parts/der-16925?seid=srese1
Good work! Love the color!
Great video, how did you replace the digital clock for that display?
That clock replacement is from Lutz Auto, definitely one of my favorite replacements for that!
Awesome video. I will now take what I learned , go to the parts store, and buy new ones.
Good choice 😂
this is helpful thank you. Do the part numbers change if I have factory rear locker?
For the outer axle stuff I don't think so. I think it's only different for the 3rd member seal and the carrier components inside the diff.
@ thanks a bunch for your reply
the book says to do it this way
If you want really cold AC either fit a new evaporator core with a new TX valve or get your existing evaporator core cleaned thoroughly which requires removal. If you try cleaning it without removal will not be as good but ideally just get a new one. You would be surprised how much crap blocks up the evaporator core over the years limiting airflow across it. I got mine replaced with a new one made a huge difference much colder and stronger air flow. I also run a condenser fan.
I have cleaned mine out in a video that I had never posted as it didn't come out well and I didn't film very much 😂. I didn't replace it due to them not being available in the US, but I didn't know about partsouq at the time, so I may revisit that when I replace my condenser at some point in the future. Also threw a new expansion valve and dryer in as well.

great video just did my engine with new oem parts. got 200 miles on it and headgasket is leaking , Head is brand new and block was machined. I order headgasket from Partslane on ebay and i think i may of got a knock off gasket . I am about to pull if out and see what happened. I even used brand new head studs.
Ah man, sorry to hear that. I'd also double check the new head. I've gotten new heads with casting defects before and I usually have them inspected by my local machine shop. But yeah counterfeit parts on eBay are a real problem these days as well.
@@motor.mausGarage Thats good to know I will do that.
Hey Buddy, I have the same issue on my 1997 Land Cruiser. Do yo remember the part number for that rubber hose? and where to order it? Please!
Oh, never mind! I found it in these comments.
Oil on the filler neck hose? Yeah, no. It's gasoline that has penetrated the hose and seeped in after leaking. Unless your diff was slinging grease all over.
So you consider lockhart basin easiest? Obviously Salt Valley Rd was easier because it's mostly just a dirt road. My very first trip to Moab, I went to lockhart the say way you did. Starting from town, going over hurrah pass. But I got my FJ Cruiser that was stock at the time stuck and high center on the last climb to the top of Lockhart basin before all the beautiful camp spots. After some wiggling I was able to get it back down and just a scratch on the rear bumper. The washouts on the boulders were pretty bad back then. But that was 2017/2018. I would think it would be worse now. But you place it as easy. Most people who think its easy run lockhart basin in reverse coming into town. But based on the other vehicles in your convoy I don't have much concern for taking the 80 on 35s up lockhart. It's the only trail I still want to do that I haven't completed. That I've been told multiple times is the best camp spot in the Moab area.
I recently changed my PS reservoir with a new OEM replacement, because mine leaked. Are you putting ATF in yours or actually hydraulic fluid? You'll have less cavitation which results in more whining and varnish if you use actual hydraulic oil. At least that seems to be the thought process. Buying K02 in 2024 just seems strange when you can buy K03. But if it's an excellent close out deal then you can't beat that. You mention the vehicle is heavy, but have you weighed it? Definitely worth stopping at a CAT scale to see what the weight actually is. Weighed mine recently because I am considering moving to the 2.5" VT coils at some point from the 3" flexi.
So I think for a stock or maybe a vehicle on 33s it's a good, moderate to challenging trail (Lockhart) with a pretty minimal risk on body damage. It is a really good scenic trail and camping out there is a great spot as it's rather remote. I think most yotas can probably make it through with a real good spotter or driver with at least some ATs After doing some Moab 7 and 8 rated trails after Lockhart with an 80 on 37s, Lockhart seems like a warm up 😂. So I think it really depends on your rig set-up and tolerance. After golden Spike I don't really see myself doing anything rated less unless I just want to chill out or I'm showing the trail to someone who has less trail tolerance than myself. If I'm looking for something to challenge myself, I'm going to have to aim for a 7 or 8 rated trail with my current 80 set up. KM3s we're very high on my list, however a lot of people have expressed how quickly they wear. They were also about $100 more per tire compared to 37" KO2s so I'm not gonna say that wasn't a factor 😂. A few people I know have burned through KM3s in a season of wheeling and about 30k miles. I just have personal experience with KO2s that was and still is very positive. I bought and sold a 4runner I had with the same set of KO2s with plenty of life left on them, which is really impressive imo. Perhaps one day I will try KM3s, but with me living in the desert for the time being, I don't really have a need to do so. And at the time I went to Moab KO3 didn't come in a 37" tire, so I didn't have the option to use KO3s, maybe next set I'll give them a shot! As far as the weight, it is decently heavier than stock, looking at nearly 250lbs added to the front with the bumper, and probably the same for the rear now that I have a rear bumper. Small amounts of weight can have a pretty large effect on wheeling capability, which is why you see a lot of serious wheelers, doing the Rubicon, Pritchet canyon/Rusty nail, etc stay as light as possible. You'd be hard pressed to find a rig with a full drawer system, RTT, huge heavy bumpers, etc not struggle through those types of trails. Either way, really happy with where my 80 ended up, and will be looking to get into some of the more challenging trails across the country going forward. I think I've got the Rubicon on my list for 2025!
Also the power steering situation ended up being a clogged filter, so I replaced the reservoir and haven't had issues. I may be upgrading to power assist eventually though so stay tuned for that.
ua-cam.com/video/67TSAYnXtfY/v-deo.html These gears are split up for noice reduction.
Yeah I had someone correct me on that, good call out!
You have the part number for it?
51171888374
I just found your video. I realize it’s from a year ago, but I’m dealing with the same problem. Do you know what exactly was causing the gas leak? Thanks. I appreciate it
Yep! It was the filler neck rubber hose. It was so old it was cracked and barely getting fuel into the tank.
Did you consider painting your new block before rebuilding? Or wish you'd done it now? I've read on the forums that sometimes these blocks come with subpar paint jobs and guys will strip them down and repaint. I've got a new block coming and I'm not sure it's worth it to strip off the factory paint and redo it unless it's really bad. Thoughts? Yours looks like it was in good shape, minus the exploding silica packet!
After a few months on it, it seems like it's holding up well. I'd say if you want to no doubt prevent any paint going away, you could rough it up and mask all the surfaces and throw some high temp on it. If you've got the time and space to do it, I'd say go for it!
@@motor.mausGarage That's what I ended up doing, but I probably could have left it as is. Rebuilding my 94 80 series and these videos have been super helpful to supplement with the FSM steps!
Minute 12:40 “the engine is pretty healthy “ 😂😂😂
Narrator: it was in fact, *not* healthy 😂😂
Cody it’s Tashon your neighbor
bigger oil filter means more filter area. The bigger one will be a better filter with less restriction
If only they were still available 🥲
$11,000 You're welcome.
I watched this video thinking you were going to show a head gasket replacement? I think you should have called it pulling the engine transmission and transfer case?
The UA-cam algorithm is a fickle beast 😂. This is more of a multi part series as there was a lot of time gap been work.
May be a silly question, but is there a concern with running electrical wires through gas/gas tank??
A few that should be considered: Make sure you're using an appropriate connection, no twisting wires together and calling it good. Crimp, solder, or connector. Don't need any sparks lol. Make sure you route the wires around from any sharp edges to avoid shorts. And make sure you're using connectors and crimps that can hold up to gasoline, most off the shelf ones do. If you're doing a custom setup, make sure any holes you drill get sealed. Bulkhead connectors, fuel appropriate RTV, rubber gaskets, etc.
@@motor.mausGarage thank you! Is there a full kit with the floater and pump already connected. I think my fuel pump is out and my fuel gauge is not working. 😕
I don't think so, I bought the level sensor and pump separately, not sure if Toyota sells them as a full assembly.
Did you run distilled water through it before closing the block plug off? I'm in the middle of doing a flush right now that's why I'm asking. I'm also going with the Zerex Asian Vehicle Red
You can leave the plug out and flush, I believe that's what I did if I remember correctly 🤔. Zerex should be good to go 👍
So did you leave the heater on the whole time after you turned the heater on until you were done?
Preferably heater on as you are bleeding the system (radiator cap off). This just makes sure no air gets trapped in the heater core.
@motor.mausGarage perfect! I appreciate the response. Greetings from CO!
So now that summer has definitely hit, how is the fan working out? What kind of temps are you pushing? In Vegas around 110°+ I'm pushing 60°ish without a fan
Yeah I'm sitting around 102-108 depending on the day. I haven't measured it directly, and admittedly I should probably replace my condenser, but so far it has made a pretty significant difference over not having one last summer. AC is quite nice when idling for long periods compared to basically non existent before 😂.
I know you mentioned but try pulling and replacing the bulb with stock. Might be simply LED which is a known issue.
Yeah I'll eventually to check it just in case, who knows what has been done to cause this 😂
Hey, why was it smarter to leave the battery connected I didn't understand? Nvm you removed it i commented too early.
I think there is a fuse for the light or you switched the wires from empty to full I can't recall if is the green or the brown.
Hmmm I didn't see a fuse on the diagram for that light, but might be worth a second look. As far as switching wires, perhaps, I just ended up putting them back the way they were, which could've been swapped at some point in it's life. 🤔
@motor.mausGarage I have an xtra one assembled. I will take a look at it to let you know about the wires. I changed mine because the gas was showing at full all the time(but was empty) and noticed that the little sensor attached to the floater was stripped and pretty much open. Got a new one. Also noticed that if the floaters touch the metal part, it does not move up or down. And if stays down, the light will stay on.
You're a legend.
Good luck on finding the gremlin!
What’s up with the old suspension? I know I mentioned a year or so ago I’d be interested! Looks like a great setup you’re going with!
It actually went to a local friend of mine, I apologize, I completely forgot we had talked about it awhile back 🤦
It’s all good local is always easier and that was a full drivetrain rebuild ago lol my clutch went out in December so I still haven’t had time to finish reassembly on that anyway
Would love a build list, suspension and lessons learned especially (I'd love to avoid any excessive vibrations on highway if that's actually possible)... I've got a mildly built 200 and I've been baselining my 80 for a build, but I'm a bit hung up on direction to go. I live pretty close to Moab, so I'm debating a 3 link versus a quality 3.5" lift and some 37s, any input would be much appreciated since you just built yours and witnessed some of the others.
Best 80 series suspension setup ever?! #80series #toyota #automobile #offroad #landcruiser #shorts
Any difference in idle or throttle response with the greater fuel flow?
Nah, feels the same. I might hard wire it eventually because I think there's some kind of resistor that I would like to delete.
Replacement of the fuel filter will help a little bit. My 180k original was filled with dirt. Oem parts period.
i had to resort to ordering a pump from amazon due to supply chain issues as it was during the pandemic (2021) i love how the pump is easy to get to in the 80series.
There should be an access panel for the carpet at least 😂
Thanks for the video! Mine is showing always empty but the light seems to come on when I’d expect to be low on fuel…now you have me wondering if it’s the wiring somewhere? I was thinking it might be the sending unit.
the sending unit and cage for the sending unit is it rusty? or dirty? you may need to replace it
Yeah my bet is in sending unit, but hopefully you don't end up like me 😂
What is that beefy radiator you have in there?
That is a Ron Davis radiator OEM replacement. 10/10 recommend, well worth the money.
Another great video! I just now finished watching all 3. I suspect I'll watch them a few more times before my rebuild this winter. Thank you for efforts! Where did you buy the resistor for the EGR delete? Cheers!
Thanks for the support! This vehicle actually already had a resistor for the EGR when I bought it, but you can usually find a good assortment of them on Amazon or eBay. Not sure what the resistance value needs to be though.
Great video! It's very informative and will use in the future. I plan on doing this to my 1997 Fzj80 in a few months. One question... Is there a list of new parts needed for a short block build? I've been slowly buying parts in prep reaction, such as wiring harness, injectors, water pump, blah. blah, blah. I've searched Ih8mud , but haven't found a list. I want to make sure I have all the parts on hand. Thanks!!!
I'm not aware of any lists, but the main points would probably be somewhere along the lines of: Pistons and rings (or just rings if you're reusing pistons) Rod bearings Main bearings with thrust washers Rods (if not reusing OEM) Freeze plugs Oil restrictor in top of block (can just reuse the original) Alignment dowels for the head Oil pump o rings Oil pickup tube gasket Rear main seal Timing cover o rings Oil squirters (if you suspect old ones are faulty) I'm probably missing a few things but that's the bulk of what you'd need. Obviously machine work would be needed, so I'd talk to your machine shop before buying pistons and rings.
Still can’t find the web site
Yeah there is no website unfortunately, kind of word of mouth deal at the moment.
What part of Texas are you in?
I'm all the way out in El Paso, so basically barely Texas 😂
What headlights do you have? And are they worth a dam?
These are custom made by a local business, I bought the depo glass headlights from eBay and he retrofitted them, definitely worth a damn 😂 instagram.com/omnipotentdesign?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
Dang! I would have liked to have met you at CruiseMoab!
Same! Next year for sure, I was pretty overwhelmed with this being my first time 😂
Nothing better when you have 2 or more people trying to spot you you and all saying different things. haha. Not saying it happened here but I've seen it. Weren't you sketch about not having sliders???
It happens to the best of us 😂. I was very sketch about not having sliders lmao. But I was also very careful, managed risk pretty well lol. Next year it's game on though since they are sitting in my house right now 😅
I recently got an 80 and am in the process of doing the head gasket. Can't wait to see your video on 37s. Currently in between 35s and 37s! Great video!
so 36s? 😜
Technically mine are 36.5" 😂. I'm biased, but if you plan on doing a 3" lift, 37s all day 😎. Also good lock on the head gasket, I should have some pretty decent documentation on the process on this channel as well 🤝
What radiator is that?
This is a Ron Davis radiator
Great video, very informative. My AC feels a bit humid so I think a new dryer is in order. This fan set up looks like it would make a difference. I might have to try it. Thank you for posting.
This has been one of the best mods I've done hands down, really makes a difference at idle for AC.
@@motor.mausGarage I will have to try it.
Eye pro while using the press!!!! Also, buy a bench vice. Great video, very helpful. I think the U joints on my HDJ81 are 34 years old 😮😅
I have increased eye pro usage quite a bit 😂. I now have a hitch mounted vice that I use as well lol. Thank you!
