Cheap Extractor needs PRE Operational TLC Before Use
Bought this Chinese made honey extractor so I need to show you some of the issues you could have should you decide to own one as well. I had no idea what was about to happen when I first started using this thing. It's working fine now but be sure to check all the screws and bolts BEFORE turning the crank!

The New Taylor Acres Homestead

We sold our old homestead about 2 years ago and moved behind Sherry's parents to help take care of her alzheimers stricken mother and her aging caregiver father. Once Sherry's mom passed away, we thought we might do the RV thing and travel around the country. We did, diesel got ridiculously expensive and we stopped, sold all our RV stuff and bought the new homestead. Starting all over again is ...
Wilderness Mattress Review - You asked for it!!

Many of our viewers requested the review after our video on un-wrapping the Wilderness Plush King mattress, so here it is. We were able to take a 3 1/2 week trip from Texas to Pennsylvania to try out the mattress. We camped at a number of Harvest Host locations and campgrounds in those weeks and had a wonderful time.
Wilderness Mattress Unwrapping. Not as easy as you might think!!

We received our new Wilderness King Plush mattress and decided to video the unwrapping. It could certainly be a bit confusing to try to get this thing out of all the wrappings that they are wrapped in. I wouldn't encourage using scissors lest you cut the mattress itself. Once you find the final "wrap" in unfolds pretty easily! But.....is it worth the effort....and the money??? We'll let you kno...

Finally, off to Pennsylvania to see kids and grandkids! Our first stop on the trip was a Harvest Host location in Peggs, Oklahoma. I know, I've never heard of it either. It was a bit out of the way and it was raining cats and dogs, but we finally found our way sort of there! The owner had to come rescue us!

Got the extractor fixed and it's working perfectly. Shortly after this, my bees absconded and since I didn't realize it for some time, they came back and removed all the honey from the hive as well. Frames that were full and beautiful were completely empty when I got back to the hive. I've now ordered more bees and have changed the location for the bees so I'm hoping for a superb growth. Still loving the layens frames and the horizontal hive!! Going to be my forever hive for sure. Thanks for the comment!!

Great video. I love the enthusiam people have for such a great hive design. One point to consider I believe which may help you and others is to note that @5:48 you give the impression that the bees don't move across multiple frames and it makes it sound as if they form a pancake circle on a single frame. In fact, the bees form a sphere shaped cluster (if the frame size allowes them) across multiple frames and the sphere or ball moves about 1mm a day usually up towards the honey at the top and between frames to the left or right through holes they make in the comb. They do this in order to keep the queen and centre of the ball above 20 degrees C during the most dormant phase of winter and then to be able to raise it again to 35 degrees again when the queen starts laying in early spring. If the bee's were in a pancake the comb underneith or above them would be too cold for them to maintain their temperature. Bee's at the crust rotate frequently with bees in the core. They are just so fascinating 🙂

My father had a similar set up with only two hives in the late 1980's but were wiped out by the, new at that time, mites and beetles. I came across Dr. Leo's work with Layens hives and have been working on building my first hive. I hope to be ready by spring 2024. I am building my retirement job. QUESTION -- Why did you go with "round" entrances scattered around the hive instead of bottom slots? Winters here in Michigan are brutal and a BIG factor on their survival. GREAT tutorial!👍

    • @tayloracreshomestead887
      @tayloracreshomestead887 11 місяців тому

I just bought my hive from Dr. Leo and this is the way he made them. The round things cover all the holes and can be used for entrance or vent holes. I use only one for entrance and open a couple of others simply for venting. You can select vent or open by turning the metal cover. 3 different ways to allow air or bees.. Pretty well thought out I thought. Works very well, here. Our winters can be pretty brutal also but nothing like you guys get!!!

Thanks for asking. I learned that I need to bring the bees home where I can keep a closer eye on them. I confirmed what Gunther Hauk writes in his book "Toward Saving the Honeybee'- the swarm has incredible regenerative qualities. I had colonies that were produced from swarms this spring that outproduced established colonies from the previous year BY FAR! The downside was on colonies that were not in my yard, I missed the swarms and in most cases, the queen left behind was no good and the colony failed! So now I feel the swarm is ESSENTIAL to colony health and regeneration. That's great because it's also the most fun you can have with the bees. @@willowbeesnaturally

Yeah, the difference is there is less interaction when crossing legally than what is described here. Meaning more information is gathered and more vetting for these people you're speaking against. Why not travel to a Northern border and see how much is done there. I'll give you a hint, it's far less. There's literally clear cut paths for people to walk across between Canada and Montana. Not monitored, no fence, hell.....not even a speed bump to walk over. Nothing more than fear mongering and hate of brown people from the right. Stop spreading false information.@@tayloracreshomestead887

@@JB11381 wow, I wasn't aware that I hated 5 of my grandchildren, or my daughter in law, or myself for that matter! See, you lefties spout crap without knowing any facts. Most of us are used to that by now. I'm American Indian (Choctaw) and even thought I'm not real brown, I'd be considered brown and self hating according to you. I have Columbians, blacks, browns, Asians and pretty much most of the colors of the spectrum in my family and until I heard from you, I never knew I hated them all.....what a revelation!! Guess it should be expected though from a typical left factless spout. I don't care what color anybody is, but I do care when they enter my country illegally! That's the facts!!!

@@tayloracreshomestead887 then why is the focus exclusively on the southern border, where they’re clearly interacting with border patrol? I’m Libertarian, not Liberal. I want legal immigration too. Just pointing out how inaccurate your description is. A study completed by TRAC in 2019 shows 99% of asylum seekers, those people in your video, DO show up for their hearings. That same study shows 20% of the people showing up to these same points are detained. You can look that up and verify for yourself, but I’m sure you won’t. I’m Wampanoag and have Korean, Lebanese, Italian, and Irish family members. Not sure why you decided we needed to share our genealogy, but I’ll play along.

Ken here from Blue Sky Ranch in Hockley, Texas. I currently have five (5) colonies, one in a traditional Lang, one in a long Lang, and three (3) that are being overwintered in my homemade swarm traps. I am currently constructing three Layens swarm traps which will each house six (6) frames. I construct my swarm traps out of recycled, cedar fence boards which I find in local subdivisions. The traps become heavy, even while empty, so attach an eye bolt in the top. I use ropes and pulleys to not only raise the traps, but also lower them when bees move in. This area fortunately has many feral colonies because I have a 100% success rate with all that I put out. Of course, April, May, and June are the most successful months. The traps are constructed to mimic a wall cavity being the width of a Langstroth frame, 5 1/2” deep, and here to four feet high. Until this year, I have not had drawn out comb to place in the traps, so the transfers to permanent housing is accomplished as would be a cutout. I use Swarm Commander as a lure along with some scrap comp placed loosely in the bottom. The horizontal slats across the face are fastened with screws which makes the extractions very easy. Nevertheless, I’m planning to transition into the Layens format for reasons similar to yours.

Johnny, beekeeping is tricky at times. If you don't succeed at first don't blame the equipment. That entrance seems inadequate, even when it is fully opened. On a standard Langsthroth box the entrance is about 14 inches by 1/2". Bees should be able to go in and out with easy. It seems to me that the people that promotes the Layens hive over the standard Langsthroth hive are exploiting the inexperienced beekeeper.

I don't understand why people that don't use the standard Langsthroth hive always work so hard to show how much better their unconventional hive is. I have not yet seen any advantages of the Layens hive standard over the Langsthroth hive. I don't see a single commercial beekeeper using Layens hive. The way I see it the Layens hive stay mostly empty, lots of wasted space. Commercial beekeepers are in for the money and if the Layens hive gave them an advantage they would certainly be using it. Langsthroth hive has been in continues use for over 160 years and are used by 99.999% of beekeepers. It seems to me that the people that promotes the Layens hive over the standard Langsthroth hive are exploiting the inexperienced beekeeper. BTW, did you know that honey costs 30 times more than sugar syrup and bees don' t know if you feed them honey or sugar syrup. Also, summer bees live about a month and a half and winter bees at most 5 months, so by April all of the last year's bees will be dead except for the queen. Ah, remember that bees are not pets.

Depends why you are into bees. Langstroth has proven itself for mass production. I have various horizontal hives which I keep for a hobby. Took eight small jars of honey, last year and left the rest for the bees. I am having a lot of fun with my hives. To each their own.

Here are advantages. 1. The most you need to lift is 1 frame. 2. When you open the hive the bees aren’t disturbed. Only the frames you take out are disturbed. 3. It’s insulated. Have a look at Rev Langstroth Beekeepers Manual page 14. Even he recommended insulation

I use to use Langsthroth hives. I switched to Layens because they're much more efficient and are much easier on the bees and my back. Most bee keepers in America use Langsthroth because they been established here first and are more common, however, of you do your research you'll find that the Layens hive is closer to a natural tree trunk habitat than Langsthroth hives and Layens hives are better insulated in colder climate. Once you switch you'll never go back to the outdated Langsthroth hive
