Wool Appliqué Stitching Tutorial

In previous videos on wool appliqué, the stitching was just a small focus. I thought I would make a longer form video on just the stitching with some tips. I apologize if a few shots a a bit blurry when I hold the piece too close to the camera, but there are only a few times that happens. Hopefully you will benefit from this stitching tutorial.

Mini Tutorial Matching Points when Joining Blocks
I just found your site. I’m not making quilts with wool but I’m sure you have lots of info for me
Welcome!
Your quilts are beautiful!!!
Thanks!
I love the way you pieced the binding, the different colors really give the quilt a unique look. New subscriber here, looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks! I love using up my scraps any way I can!
I absolutely love your skill, your creativity and your color choices! Thank you for sharing your beautiful projects.
You're welcome! I have a lot of fun with scrap quilting :-)
Wow. You have some great ideas. I gotta sub after that quilt show😊
Thanks!
This makes so much sense to me. For me this technique will work so much better than others I've seen. Thankyou so so much
You're welcome! Squaring up fabric is the key to accurate cutting.
Love the idea of rolling the Fat 1/8s ! Given that I store mine with my FQs it easily distinguishes them so know what I have. Regarding squaring off the uneven edges of pieces I'm going to subcut into strips, I cut off the uneven edges on one or both sides at about one or two inches in (depending on how many strips I want to get out of the middle of it) and that goes into a "String Stash" bag. String quilt designs don't always need even edges for the piecing and this way I get to use every bit of that piece of fabric.
Great idea to add to your string stash!
Can you tell me where you got the edges to both your rulers?
Hi! That is made by Olipfa. I found them at Joanne Fabrics. They only come in the size for the 24 1/2" ruler but I had my husband cut down others to fit my smaller rulers. I'm not sure they sell them anymore though, sadly. When I replace my rulers, I'm going to have to find another solution. It's made of a heavy duty plastic.
Samples!
Love your quilts. They are so well pieced, and look a little old fashioned with a modern twist. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us!
Thanks! I do take my inspiration from antique quilts.
Thank you! You are so good!!!thx for sharing.
Thanks!
Wow! So many great ideas. I have to stop buying fabric and use my collection I have in totes. Thank you for sharing
You're welcome. It's fun to find new ways to use up your stash!
Very useful information!!! Thanxabunch ❤️😀

I like your scrappy style, the quilts are beautiful!

Very organized scraps…love the ideas!❤
Thanks!
Great ideas! Thank you so much for sharing! I love your quilts!❤
You're welcome! I really like to share my quilts with everyone.
Hard to see everything. When you held up the quilts that helped. Thank you.
Sorry about that. Sadly, my sewing studio where I do my work is quite small! I hope you still enjoyed the tips. :-)
@@deanneeisenman9347 it all worked out! I enjoyed the video! Thank you❤️
Very nice
Thanks!
Thanks Deanne. Always looking for new ideas. Dort
You are so welcome!
great idea, I store them similar to you but dont cut them into the sizes you do, I will have to try that, thanks
Glad you got a few ideas from me. 🙂
Great information. Love how you cut up the fabric yards into different size pieces, and store them. Thank you for all your helpful tips!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for that video. While I’ve done blanket stitch for many years, I wasn’t clear on how you did your whipstitch.
You’re welcome 😊
many thanks Deanna 👍
Where did you get that long ruler with the safety piece on it? I would love one of those. Thank you for sharing this helpful video 😊
That is a Safety Shield made by Olipfa. They attached to the ruler with adhesive. I think JoAnne Fabrics still sells them online.
I have so much fabric that has been cut into ( gifted etc from others). Mist doesnt have salvage edges. How do you square that up?
You can still square it by finding the lengthwise grain of your fabric which runs parallel to the selvedge.
what is the name of the table called you are using to measure
Thank you so much. Your explanation was very clear to understand.
You're welcome!
Why not use a light box or window for placement? I would make it so much easier for you.
Hi, You can do that if you think it will help you. I rely on the ruler since that is the way I was taught.
Holding up your work closer to camera actually removes it from video viewing, to offscreen which I find quite frustrating. As it seems these videos are from last year, perhaps someone has previously shared this with you. I hope so. There are also other times your work goes offscreen. Basically, your purple mat is the scope of our view, and whatever you attempt to share beyond its confines becomes one with the blackness surrounding the viewing screen. Enlarging the viewing screen only enlarges its size on my phone without any change in the viewing range which remains limited to the purple mat.
Sorry about that. I will try to correct this in future videos.
What quilt pattern is that?!its lovely!
This is my pattern called Strips & Stars: shop.snugglesquilts.com/collections/lap-and-large-quilts/products/strips-stars-quilt-pattern
Great explanation ..looks easy..love your long ruler with edge..where did you purchase this long ruler❓THANK YOU..JANET
It's an Olipfa Safety Shield. You can find them here: amzn.to/41xkS5i
Can’t find the description of how you do the star on your blog
It's in Part 3 of this wool appliqué series.
wonderful video..thank you..but no replies to questions🙃
Sorry! I have been lax in answering questions. I will try to do better in the future.
Great tour....your space is well- thought out but still looks likes it's used by a REAL person, not something from a quilt magazine that doesn't look like anything but a room "glamour" shot! I am SO envious of your wool stash! :) I've done your BOM's for several years now and am so amazed at how generous you are with your time and talents; your blog is one of my favorites-your tips are always so helpful. Even though I've been quilting for decades I always find some information of use there.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I finally understand 😌
So glad this video helped. Squaring up fabric is an important step that should not be skipped.
You room is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. When you opened the closet there was a flower block hanging. Which pattern is that one? Thanks
That is my 2022 BOM pattern. You can find it here: shop.snugglesquilts.com/collections/block-of-the-month/products/block-of-the-month-pdf-pattern-2022
Can you show us how to finish the appliance. How do you put a backing, how to finish the edges. Do you blanket stitch, or do you put a binding. Can you please show us all methods.
l'd love to see that as well as l've never seen anyone complete a full piece of work
Hi, Since it is wool appliqué on fabric that I do, I finish my projects like a regular quilt. I sandwich the top with batting and backing and quilt. I usually do a primitive hand quilted stitch with perle cotton thread.
Did you add the clear piece on your ruler that you hold or did the ruler come like that
That is a safety shield that I purchased to add to the ruler. You can find it here: amzn.to/41xkS5i
Love you cat window😻. Great job with improvisation! Congrats on your blue ribbons.
Thank you! 😊
Very good video. Thank you so much. Please let me know if you repost video on points
Thank you, I will
Can’’t see on video where you are stitching at top of star
Hi! I am planning on re-filming this soon. Sorry about the video being cut off.
Excellent explanation on points and inside corners. It would be nice if your camera could catch the work you are doing. Sometimes your work was totally out of the picture.
Noted! Sorry. I will re-film this in the near future.
Really enjoyed your tutorial. Very clear. Gave me the courage to try it. What kind of glue is in your bottle?
The glue is Roxanne's Glue Baste-it. shop.snugglesquilts.com/collections/notions/products/roxannes-glue-baste-it-large
Thanks for square fabric. Can you please tell me where you bought that ruler your using. I would appreciate it.
My rulers are Creative Grid brand that I got at my local quilt shop. The ruler safety shield is something I added. You can get them here: amzn.to/41xkS5i
Loved your video especially the whip stitch. I’ll have to give it a try.
Best way to square up a large pc of fabric? I will often purchase 2-4 yds not wanting to cut more than needed.
Square up the same way.
Square up the same way. However, you need to have something to balance the weight of the fabric otherwise it will pull the area you are squaring. Also, if you are cutting that whole piece of fabric up, you will probably have to stop and re-square a few times.
Where did you get that large ruler
That is a Creative Grids ruler from my local quilt shop.
I am surprised you did not start by removing the selvage edge first
Who does that? It’s thrifty using the selvage.
I generally don't remove it. I trim off the selvage when I am cutting pieces for a quilt.
For me the best part of your room ... is the kitty in the window! I have 2 feline fur babies, one of which cries when I'm using MY sewing chair. LOL
I loved this! I've never clipped the whole shape before, just cleavages and concave seams. I'm curious to try clipping all the way around a shape. Thank you for this!
