Beethoven(Manuscript-Autograph) : Piano concerto no.5 op.73"Emperor" (Levin)
Pianist: Robert Levin
Allegro (E♭ major) 00:00
Adagio un poco moto (B major) 19:32
Rondo. Allegro (E♭ major) 26:13
Archduke Rudolph, an excellent pianist and brother of the Austrian emperor, became friendly with Beethoven in 1808, and Beethoven agreed to dedicate the fourth piano concerto to him. It seems likely that Rudolph then commissioned the next concerto, for Beethoven’s sketchbook indicates that he began work on his Piano Concerto No 5 in E flat major, Op 73, almost straight after his performance of No 4. The work was more or less finished by April, but life in Vienna was disrupted in May by a French invasion, with Rudolph departing for the countryside and not returning until the following January. Private performances may have taken place thereafter, once Rudolph had learned the piano part, but the only one known to us took place on 13 January 1811, when Johann Nepomuk Chotek recorded that he had heard Rudolph play ‘an extraordinarily difficult and artful’ new concerto by Beethoven, which must have been this one. A copy of the work had meanwhile been sold to Clementi for publication in London, where it appeared in November 1810. A slightly revised edition was then published by Breitkopf & Härtel in February 1811, thus shortly after Rudolph’s performance, which must have been from a manuscript.
The grandiose character of the music has earned the concerto the nickname ‘Emperor’. It begins with three massive chords, each one followed by highly decorative figuration on the piano, before the main orchestral themes are heard in the usual way. The three chords return at the recapitulation, with different but equally ornate figuration on the piano; and as the piano is given so many florid solo passages, a cadenza near the end of the movement would be almost superfluous. Thus Beethoven wrote out just a short one of about twenty bars. Perhaps, too, Rudolph did not trust himself to compose a cadenza that would be adequate for Beethoven’s majestic work.
The second movement is in the unusual key of B major, and is a slow, lyrical one with much piano decoration, as in the first three concertos. At the end the music suddenly changes key, and a slow version of the finale theme is heard on the piano. The finale proper then enters without a break, with the theme heard at normal speed. When everything seems to be over, there is a strange passage for piano and timpani alone, before a final flourish brings the music to a thrilling close.

Pianist: Robert Levin Allegro con brio (C minor) 00:00 Largo (E major) 16:03 Rondo. Allegro - Presto (C minor) 25:50 The earliest ideas for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor, Op 37, appear in sketches from around 1796, but the work remained undeveloped for a time, and an almost complete lack of surviving sketches leaves the main period of composition uncertain. Beethoven probably worke...

Pianist: Robert Levin Allegro con brio (C major) 00:00 Levin´s Cadenza 12:57 Largo (A♭ major) 16:41 Rondo. Allegro (C major) 26:59 The Piano Concerto No. 1 was actually the second of Beethoven’s mature piano concertos. It was first only in order of publication, evidently because he much preferred it to the earlier Concerto “No. 2.” It is a bigger, grander work in every way. Whereas the earlier ...

Pianist: Valerie Tryon The song Der Gondelfahrer, D808, was probably not known to Liszt (it was not published until 1872), but the version for men’s chorus and piano, Op 28/D809, likewise written in March 1824, was the basis for the last and one of the sweetest of Liszt’s Schubert transcriptions. About 15 years ago, there was a young pianist posting on the Piano World forums. We were all incredibly impressed by the professionalism and beauty of his playing. Not too long after that, he started winning major competitions and getting record deals. That was Can Çakmur. Since then, everything I've heard from him has been completely dazzling. His Liebesbotschaft is to die for!

Liszt's genial and brilliant "arrangements, transcriptions, and paraphrases"... although their results are quite difficult, but they're worthwhile to listen many times and fully understand what was Schubert's original thoughts (Schubert was too poor to buy a piano - fortunately he finally had a piano at the final part of his life, but today's pianists say that his piano works are unpianistical sometimes...).

The piece has 6 beats in a bar, but the grouping of those beats (melodically) are either 3 groups of 2 (like in the first 5 bars) or 2 groups of 3 (at bar 6). Part of the feel of the piece is the gentle alternation of these two groupings...sometimes even different between clarinet and piano (i.e. clarinet is doing 2 of 3, while piano is 3 of 2). It wouldn't make sense to change the time signature from 3/2 (when it's 3 of 2) to 6/4 (when it's 2 of 3) every few bars (in different parts). Putting both 'options' up front indicates that whichever is most appropriate is the 'option'. Remember music is fluid, like language, and the shift from 2 of 3 to 3 of 2 (and back again) is quite subtle - especially in a flowing and gentle movement like this. I hope this helps
