Here's two different ways to attach rod & wire to your stained glass plant stakes. One is a bit more commonly seen, but with some important tips. The other? That's my fav cuz I think it's a bit prettier and more seamless.

      @@mountainwomanproducts Thank you for your quick reply...I haven't started with stained glass actually, just stocking up for getting started and was curious how many projects can you make with this spool, how quickly do you run out..I know it is a little bit tricky to answer since every project is different but just for an idea..hope, it makes sense (english is not my first language)

      @@petranadraska7858 That makes sense totally. You're doing great with English! 💕 It's really hard to say how many projects you can do from one roll for just the reason you said: every project is soooo different in size, number of pieces, if you do decorative solder, etc. I think it's safe to say if you're sticking with small & simple suncatchers to start, you'll get some good practice in from one roll.

    • @mountainwomanproducts

      You can absolutely use these all the time if ya want to. They function for all the breaks (curve, squiggles, straight) really. The pads on the Silberschnitts wear out faster than the running pliers so you can switch up between the two if you prefer. I carry replacement pads for them in the shop if you ever need them.😀

      @mountainwomanproducts Місяць тому

      I'm so sorry I missed your questions! Grab some picture frame glass from a yard sale, dollar store, thrift store, or ask a local window shop for glass scraps. Picture frame glass is generally thinner than what we use in stained glass, but it'll give you a good and inexpensive feel for scoring. I'm using double strength 1/8" clear window glass in this video (but picture frame glass is cheaper).

    • @mountainwomanproducts

    • @mountainwomanproducts
      @mountainwomanproducts 6 місяців тому

      Oh no! I have a couple of ideas. If ya forgot about it for a week and it dried on the whole piece all crusty, then in small test spots on the back: I'd put a cloth with warm water for a bit and see if it remoisturizes it. Or, put a bit of polish on again, let it there for a few minutes and see if it gets the undercoating uncrusty. If all else fails, you can use 0000 brass wool. It will dull the solder a bit cuz it puts some micro-scratches in it, but if you plan to patina, you won't notice that. If it's just some crusty leftover spots in the corners on the glass, then you can scrape it off with an X-acto knife. Lemme know how it goes!

    So, unfortunately i can not get these here in Canada without paying too much for shipping and duty. The lead free i uae is fairly easy but its just not shiny. How do you polish solder to make it shiney? Could i use my Dremel to make things easier?

    • @mountainwomanproducts
      @mountainwomanproducts 7 місяців тому

      Eeek! I'm so sorry I missed your comment! ☹ The shiny factor of solder is going to be limited by the combination of metals used in it, but the type of polish you use and how well you scrub it can make a big difference too. You can use your dremel with a polishing head (soft floppy fabric kind) which is easier than rubbadubdubbing by hand a zillion times. But, you will have to change the polishing head out more often cuz they're little and they get shmecky pretty quickly. If you can find a solder up there that has similar components & quantities of metals to the Emerald or Ruby up there, that might help too! The Emerald is 97% tin, 3% copper. The Ruby is 97% tin, 2.75% copper, .25% silver. I like to use a one step polish & waxing combo of carnauba wax and whiting. Have you ever had an issue with the solder not sticking to the copper? This is happening to me, and I have never hd this issue before. Any recommendations? Thank you!!

      Yuppers! It can be a couple of things. Is your foil old/oxidized/dirty? Are you using enough flux? And, are you keeping a separate container to dump just a lil flux in to use for each soldering session or are you dipping into the flux bottle? Lemme know and we'll iron it (hehe! that was totally accidental but I'm claiming it) all out.😁

    What is the best flux to use for lead free, like Emerald Amerway? Does it matter what “kind” of copper foil? Loved the demos :)

      Yay! Thanks! Glad it was helpful🥰 Canfield Liquid Flux is my BFF, but everyone has their preferences. I have a video comparing different types of fluxes here (they all work with lead free too, which I'm using in the video): ua-cam.com/video/CwHZjlYgaDI/v-deo.html For foil, both Edco and Stained Glass Foil brands are great! I'd stay away from cheapie random brands as they usually don't stick well & have a tendency to split around curves. If ya need any, I have all the fluxes, foils, & solders available in my shop here: www.mountainwomanproducts.com/product-category/tools-supplies/

    Awesome tips. So do you leave your grinder in the box while you grind your glass? And that contains most of the dust/shards? Thanks!

      Yay! Thanks!🥰 If you're in a small space & don't have room to keep it on your counter, then the tote is the way to go. If you have counter space to keep it there, I like a short tote or waffle grid to keep the overflow from running out on the table. I use several waffle grids connected to each other to make a 3 sided surround. You can use corrugated plastic too (the same material as those temporary signs you see in people's yards).
