    There are big differences between investing in bond ETFs and purchasing individual bonds. When held to maturity, you get the entire bond face value back so it's possible to not lose any value in down years if you plan your bond maturities appropriately.

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples 12 годин тому

      Hey Paul. If above 0% returns are the goal, holding treasuries to maturity will win 'that' game 100% of the time. I completely agree with the safety of that. Beating the long-term results of other cash-flowing assets is the major issue. Short-term drops are typically irrelevant for long-term focused investors. My example about SCHD cash-flow multiples higher and having a 7 figure value advantage is not only true, it is actually understated for loooooong-term investing (people living on portfolio for 20 to 50 years).

    Hi I’m in my early 20s so I really need your perspective about my port. Due to my age, I’m looking for growth more than dividends at this time Now I have SMH 50% VOO 30% SCHD 20% Do you have any suggestions for me? (don’t worry, i just want to know other opinions. I will research before investing for sure)

    • @JeffTeeples

      Hey Yiggy. Thanks for watching the video and for the question. I appreciate you understanding my disclaimers (: I think your 50% growth + 30% cornerstone + 20% dividend portfolio baskets are perfect. It is likely what I would do at your age, or very close to it. I wouldn't change anything about SCHD (20%) and VOO (30%). It is exactly what I would (actually what I do) do in your situation. SMH at a full 50% feels risky. It has performed very well for a long period of time, and I *think* it will do well in the future. It is hard to imagine semiconductors not playing a key role in any form of technology advancements (AI and beyond). It's just too much for my blood for half of my overall portfolio to be in 25 companies from the exact same sub-sector of technology. I would consider changing a chunk of it to something like VGT. It is still 100% technology, and very 'risky' in general compared to a broad market growth ETF like QQQM or SCHG, which are about 50% tech, but it gives you a broader scope of 'picking the next tech winner' without being entirely in the semi-conductor basket. That is the change I would consider. Maybe 30% VGT 20% SMH (or any combo based on your conviction). If you want to make it a little more mild in tech you could mix in SCHG or QQQM as well.

    Pretty crazy how that growth and price appreciation is way more than a lot pf people earned from their full time jobs during that time. Makes investment income seem absolutely insane compared to salary work. Even right now for me if the market goes up 0.5%, it is about the same dollar value of me working 15 days and saving 40% of my gross earnings, so 3 weeks. It gets crazy fast I feel like! That means 1% is six weeks, 2% is twelve weeks, etc.

      Thanks for watching and for the comment. It is crazy to look at it from that perspective. The power of compound is hard to comprehend even for someone that understands the concept. It feels fake. It's one of the reasons I made this channel. I want every day people like me (late starter, not an entrepreneur, not overly ambitious... basically just a guy) to be able to get rocking. I know my portfolio looks solid now, but at 28 I was a newly graduated college kid (5 or 6 years late to my peers) with 75k of debt and completely confused about the world. It felt at first like 'what is the point in starting, I'm just unlucky'. Want to share how you don't need to be a rocket scientist for this stuff, and there is no such thing as luck. Nothing I saw on UA-cam was fully relatable.

      @@JeffTeeples Right, I am definitely interested in just keeping it going. Really curious to see if we'll have a big drawdown ever again. Feels like prices will almost never come down. I figure I'm about 1/3 of the way through accumulating, so I wouldn't mind a 15-25% downturn. But in the meantime I'll just continue plugging away!

    This was an outstanding video. Probably the most clearly explained benefit of qualified dividends that I've seen on UA-cam. Wondering what your opinion is on investing in an MLP. Would love for you to do a video on that topic. I am 5 years from retirement. Considering investing in EPD or MPLX . Both are very popular Master Limited Partnerships & issue a K-1. Would love your thoughts on these types of investments. I currently stay away from Reits and BDCs..

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples День тому

      Hey Logan. I appreciate the kind words about the video. Thanks for taking the time to watch it and for leaving this comment. I personally am not a fan at all of MLPs. I think the tax advantages and steady growth are peanuts compared to qualified dividends (mostly tax free in retirement, or low tax at worst) from things like SCHD that grow *way* faster and appreciate by multiples higher (over time in all markets) by comparison. I don't mean to sound negative here, but favorable taxes (which are technically the same as qualified dividends in most cases for retired people depending on marginal tax rate) will never make up for being only a quarter of the total return to other safe ETFs like DGRO and SCHD over the past decade+. Just my two cents on it. I approach every investment from a hold forever point of view. There will be a lot of opinions out there about MLPs.

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples День тому

      Hey Tony. I hadn't seen this news yet! Thanks for sharing. I did see the dividend is the biggest in Q3 history for SCHD at 75 cents per share. You bet I'll be making a video on that. I'll include my thoughts about the split as well. Although it doesn't matter from a value perspective, I always slightly prefer the lower price per share, personally. Especially as a person with OCD that doesn't like to buy fractional shares or use DRIP, lol. This will help me have less leftover money to move around to savings and money markets. As far as the impact, I would say either zero overall or slightly positive. I know that investors like splits in general over the years for a variety of reasons. I think it makes investing feel more accessible, even though fractional shares technically do that anyway (if the broker has the feature).

    Hi Jeff, the majority of my investments are in VGT and Semiconductor stocks and ETFs. Watching your videos I have decided to DCA my new money into SCHD and DGRO and trim some stocks once they hit price targets and take profits. The reason I own DGRO besides the The growth and dividend play is they own specific companies like Visa, Walmart and a few others that I would like to own. I like the way you approach the market. Investors today have great access to good information and low cost investments. I am 55 and have seen how mutual fund fees and advisor fees negatively impact the market.

I think it is a smart move to mix in SCHD and DGRO to your current portfolio. Truth be told, I was heavy in VGT for a few years myself. The ups are just too juicy to ignore, and the downs made me happy because I would buy more. Maybe something is wrong with me, haha. But eventually I decided to find a nice balance and never look back. I think it will help us do better in all markets & it will also help us sleep like a baby (:

    I'm 32 years old, after some calculations, by the time i want to retire from the canadian military ill be 58 years old and how much im saving per month, ill only be able to have 1 million after 25 years of investing ( 25 years of investing 1500 a month @ 5 percent interest annually to include inflation ). really wished i started investing when i was younger. I just got out of debt this year and managed to put aside a decent amount of money to start investing, but i feel like i'll always be behind since i don't have a house. i'm renting military housing and plan to do so until i retire and build my dream home, but that means that most ( hopefully not ) of my money will go towards my home and will only have a bit left for retirement. i'll have a 70% pension if i retire at 58, but i will forever be mad at my younger self for not being more frugal with my money at first. Big respect to whoever understands the value on saving/investing your money at a younger age, and how it can make your older self enjoy a better retirement.

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples 2 дні тому

      Thank you for watching and for sharing your details. I think you'll be very happy with your results over that long stretch of time. Figuring this stuff out at 32 years old is VERY early. I completely understand the sentiment, as I was in a similar boat. We all wish we started earlier (: I think your assumptions are conversative for long-term, buy and hold investing. Anything can happen short term, but I'm fairly comfortable in the belief you will do better than your projections over 'most' stretches of 26 years. Using 7% instead of 5%, you would be at 2.2M after 26 years. The last 100 years has returned just over 10%. The last 50 years over 11%. Way higher in the past decade. We could have a lost decade in there, but that technically will help your net worth if you are DCA in all along. The market finds all time highs long-term. Just never sell and stay the course. Plus, now that you're into this stuff, I bet you'll put in more than $1,500 eventually.

I like QQQM and VGT in my tax protected accounts and SCHD in my taxable. But a lot of it depends on where the need is. For example, I have JEPQ in my taxable because I need cash now. It would be better in a tax deferred account because of the ordinary dividends, but I need access.

    Hey Jeff, I'm hoping to retire at the end of the year. Have some money (about 100K) in CDs about ready to mature and wondering if it would be a good idea to buy some JEPQ (or JEPI) for income in retirement rather than lock in ~4% for CDs for next 4-5 years? I have other money in my bucket 1 (HYSAs, money market) for next few years, but this would be money that would otherwise be for longer term needs (like bucket 2 needs). Have heard some other YT creators (e.g., Rob Berger) say they would not recommend these type of cover call ETFs in any situation. Sounds like it works for you in your situation of supplementing income at this time. Thanks!

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples 3 дні тому

      Hey Greg. Thanks for watching and for the great question. I think Rob is great, and he's a smart guy. I watch most of his stuff and have read his book. One of the good ones. If you're looking for long-term cash flow, I would recommend SCHD over JEPQ and bonds. It has increased its dividends by 11% per year over the past 10 years. This means it doubles the per share dividend payment every 6.5 shares. Yield on cost is all that matters long-term. Yield is only relevant the day you make a purchase. SCHD has had the share price go up about 3x, and the dividend per share about 3x, therefore the 'yield' is always about the same. But the actual payments and value are wildly higher over long-stretches of time. But like most of this stuff, there is no one size fits all. What is best for me might not make any sense at all for someone else. To answer directly, if you need more cash NOW, and don't care about the value of the holding at any one point in time, JEPQ is awesome.

    • @Greg_7878_2
      @Greg_7878_2 3 дні тому

      @@JeffTeeples Thanks so much for the reply Jeff! This makes a lot of sense. The more I learn about SCHD, the more I like it. I am planning to use it as a bit of a hedge in retirement, as opposed to bonds, plus it just has some sound fundamentals in its own right. For JEPQ, it may be a good fit for my cash needs as I bridge the gap until 59 1/2.

    Quick question Jeff why do you hold such a huge position in cash isn’t 100k overkill?

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples 3 дні тому

      Hey Ronney. I like to keep cash at around 10% historically. I like to make it a target allocation in my portfolio so that the comparative dip buying is put on autopilot. I don't trust my gut to time the market, but it is nice to put more money in than the normal DCA when it is low. If the market crashes, I become cash heavy, and then buy it back down to 10%. If the market goes up, I feed cash new dollars to get it back up to 10%. I am a little lighter on cash now because I've been leaning into my 'greedy cash-flow' more and more (JEPQ). Besides having an emergency fund, I don't see anything wrong being anywhere from 5% to 25% cash, depending on the situation.

    • @JeffTeeples

      Any stock or ETF is fine in a Roth IRA. Things that pay non-qualified dividends are probably the best in a Roth if you're specifically referring to Roth vs taxable. In retirement how much of your overall investable assets should you allocate to the 3 fund portfolio? Should there be a percentage beyond dividend ETF like SCHD invested for so that in market corrections you have enough assets to address your retirement expenses? Where would you invest those funds? We are always strategizing about the accumulation phase but the end goal is to have enough each year of your retirement life

    • @FeliceLanza-kh7iu

      Hey Felice. This is a difficult question that won't have a right answer that works for every person. For me, if I had enough SCHD to pay the bills in retirement, I would be perfectly fine to allocate 100% to it. If it dips by 10 to 20% on value, that is fine with me. I know the dividends growth each and every year. But again, this is just from my perspective.

    • @JeffTeeples

    Jeff, your spreadsheets are great for seeing how to maintain the correct percentage of each etf. We will buy the lowest cost in relation to the other etfs within our portfolio. The second benefit is we can watch over time as the growth of the portfolio continues and to what amount we can expect as the years go on. I know investing isn't perfectly linear but projections based of historical data is a good place to start. Updating the projections annually will give us motivation to continue and make slight adjustments. Thanks so much for being a good teacher, inspiration and helping us stay focused on our long term goals.

    Hello Jeff, And sorry in advance for the number of letters:) If you don't mind, this time my question is about way of analysis and logic of trust when it's going about high yield income assets (8+ % of dividend yield). Seems that you have JEPQ as a concetrated high income investment, of course any investments are risky, but could you please explaine why this young fund (JEPQ) deserves that level of trust? As we know one of the fundamental recommendations of J.Bogle, is to invest in passively managed indexes, but JEPQ is actively managed fund, plus it's only 2 years young. At the same time based on the videos it's the main income holding in your portfolio. If we take a look at the Risk Summary on the JEPQ's official page, we'll find the following statement: "Should the prices of the underlying instruments move in an unexpected manner, the Fund may not achieve the anticipated benefits of an investment in an ELN, and may realize losses, which could be significant and could include the Fund's entire principal investment." It is going about the risk of 100% poterntial loss, in case if active management will go wrong, isn't it? The dividend yield of the JEPQ is juicy but is not so consistent, and taking to account your analytical approach, it is interesting to learn why JEPQ is the only chosen one to generate high income. No CEF's (in fact they are just a variation of actively managed funds), no BDC's to diversify risks and to have more stable, and even higher income? Especially if you are inteded to hold JEPQ for a long time to "amplify" SCHD, from yield perspective. From just high level view, seems like all the "high yield eggs" are in one "basket", but I'm pretty sure I'm missing some important nuance:) Sorry one more time for this long speech, here I'm trying to get better understanding of logic and strategy of investing, really appreciate your thoughts, thanks a lot for your time and efforts!

    Has any ever tried out the scenario where let's say you have about 20-25 years and you put it all in growth like VGT, QQQ, etc and after 25 years, move it over to dividend stocks like SCHD? Would that work? You would have to sell those and pay a lot of taxes but you would have more from the growth? Or is it better to start off buying SCHD, VGT, O etc? What would give you best return and live off your dividend if you have about 20-25 years in a Roth? I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Thanks!

    • @JeffTeeples
      @JeffTeeples 3 дні тому

      Thanks for watching and for the great question. Most back tests will show that having growth with QQQ and VGT for long periods of time will have higher returns. But it also depends on the time range that you are doing. A growth tilt is better assuming you are dollar cost averaging money into the market over multiple decades. However, I don't think it should be 100% growth. When you are 10 years from retirement, start slowly selling some long-term capital gains from QQQ and VGT to buy more SCHD. When you are 5 years, convert even more to SCHD. The 'right answer' will depend on the individual investor, but 'generally speaking' this is how it should go for a typical risk profile. I'm 42 and I like an even mix of dividend/value and growth in my portfolio. For me, it is SCHD and VGT+QQQM.
