A dude flying around the country in small planes for work and fun.
Flying My Searey to a Michigan Island Campground!
Flying my Searey Seaplane out to Power Island in Grand Traverse Bay Michigan for a great afternoon of boating, swimming, flying, having a tasty lunch and jumping off the dock. It's about a 1.5h hour flight from Grand Rapids up to Grand Traverse Bay and Power Island. Crystal clear warm water and amazing camping up here.

Seaplane Inspection Pickup & Splashing In a Bunch of Amazing Lakes!
Переглядів 1 тис.4 місяці тому
Hitched a ride to Northern Michigan to pickup my Seaplane from it's condition inspection. Bonus! There's a ton of amazing blue lakes up there and I got to splash into a bunch of them on my way back home.
VFR Flying South Carolina to Michigan. Long Cross Country For Work in my Tiger.

I planned to make this 2 leg, 5hr flight IFR, but I cancelled and went VFR after I couldn't get through the Charlotte Bravo Airspace. Stopped for a very cheap and good hamburger at the Cloud 9 cafe. Battled some new vibrations in the airplane, persistent headwinds, and gnarly crosswind landings at both stops. Great little day of flying!
4hrs of Single Pilot Instrument Conditions. Yikes!

Flying my Grumman Tiger from Grand Rapids, MI to Camden, SC through some pretty decent actual instrument conditions. This is a long, single pilot, IFR cross country flight for work. Pretty fun!
My First Year of Seaplane Ownership
Переглядів 17 тис.Рік тому
Updates on owning and flying a seaplane for the past year. What I've learned so far as a low time seaplane pilot, and new seaplane owner. I purchased my 2012 Experimental Searey LSX in June of 2022, and have been flying it as much as I can to get better.

Honestly just curious since Rotaxs are so easy to find what is stopping u some day from throwing a 200-300hp one on it from like a jet ski? Or will the airframe not handle somthing like that cause even 200hp is almost double the power
@@colewhitman8955 you probably could. The Rotax aircraft engines are specifically built as aircraft engines though. Not that they aren’t similar. The Searey doesn’t benefit much for any more power as it’s so draggy. People have used motorcycle engines though. Experimenting with engines isn’t for me though personally. I’ll stick to the aircraft ones.
@@thecommercialpilot hey it’s not always about speed and power. Sometimes fun is being able to land in a lake 😂
Great video, enjoying your inspiring enthusiasm. I am hoping that I may also realize a similar dream. Keep the videos coming, cheers!
Thanks! I hope so too, keep it up!
Great videos. Not enough searey content on UA-cam if you ask me.
I agree. When I wanted to buy one I'd search "Searey Flying" or "Seaplane Camping" and I wouldn't get enough stuff. So I bought one. haha.
Amazing videos, really! I would love to fly the Searey some time, but there aren't many here, sadly! Subscribed, naturally
@@theaeronaut-channel thanks!
Loved it! Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for sharing! Very informative and beautiful shots!
Hey, I was wondering if you had any contact information? I have a few questions about your searey! Thank you!
Hi! @thecommercialpilot on IG works as a DM. Or post them here and I'll answer if I can! I'm no expert though.
Couldn't you push the plane into the sand and get out of the water with the engine?
@@Ciscoql Yes. But you have a decent risk of getting stuck if you don’t know the terrain. It’s also a wilderness area so I felt that was bad form.
Found you on FB as a reel. Great content! You deserve way more views. Thanks for sharing.
@@NathanT87 thanks!
11:20 exactly what I want to do!
@@aaronleestma7077 me too!
Love this! Great content!
@@aaronleestma7077 thanks!
Would you ever take a fellow (student) pilot subscriber if they made their way to you?
@@MabrysDad yup!
Never been the power island but would love to try it out one day. Cheers from Bay city / Midland !
@@Nightstalkers22 I didn’t know it existed til 2 years ago, and I’ve been visiting that area my whole life.
Awesome content! I've been following you on Instagram, but was surprised to see there wasn't more longform videos here on your YT channel. Hope to see more of your adventures in the future! By the way, when did you shoot this? I saw a seaplane just like this recently here in TC and my first thought was it might be yours, now im wondering if it actually was, haha.
Thank you. Yea I usually don’t have time to sit down and make longer videos but I’m trying to make more! Two weeks ago Wednesday. But I was there last Monday too at Woosley and Omena Bay.
Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Very inspirational!
Thanks!
Already looking into the rotax 914 😂
Did you consider beaching up on the wheels? Didn’t look rocky.
Yea I did and you probably could. The island is designated wilderness though so I felt like it might be poor form.
I mean seriously, does it get any better? Grand Rapids guy here if you ever want to do a chicken tender run and talk airplanes.
Beautiful views!
@@GretchArmstrong big time!
Oh man you’re killing me with these SeaRey vids!
I think everything you do is awesome. I always wanted my pilot license… Very interesting
Like butter, qualified Capt. 🫡
So cool. This is a special aircraft, too bad they went out of business
Airplane companies are always going out of business. I think they will be back.
Looking for a Searey and your video was delightfully insightful. Thanks for the nice review of your journey!! Beautifully produced. 👍🏻
how tall are you? I'm considering one, but I'm worried if I will fit.
I'm 6'2" and fit great. It's honestly really comfortable. Your feet are way up under the nose.
@@thecommercialpilot thanks I’m 6’1 200lbs long in the body
It looks like you found the throttle friction adjustment
There's no friction adjustment unfortunately. The throttle linkage was just SUPER loose.
Check out henrys fish restaurant in Georgian bay canada. Its seaplace/boat access ONLY. Really popular boat tour destination
Found your Channel because I have been considering a Searey since seeing one at Oshkosh a number of years ago. The honest straightforward content is excellent!
Great video! The screen can use less switching.
Nice sea wind one of my favorite planes
Man. 😩 I will own one of these someday soon, and I’m gonna take it EVERYWHERE. Thanks for posting
Great Job! I am right behind you starting my first year of ownership of my A5. Boy are you right, insurance is NUTS.
Fly this in a sim regularly and gets absolutely bullied by the wind. Would love to fly a real one, looks sporty😉
1:03 that has to be THE BEST way of presenting a graphic I have seen
Thanks haha
I fly a cygnet in miami , less expensive. 😊
Fantastic journey, Guys. Cool airplane, too! Just a heads up: Lead is not in any way a lubricant. Enjoy!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your videos and your thoughts. Very inspirational!!!
Thanks!
When's the last time the motor mounts were changed
Good one yea. But it was only 2 years ago.
How are you liking it? I have a place up in Northport, MI (5D5) just north of TVC. My Cirrus was just destroyed in a tornado so I get to consider changing my airplane journey.
I love it. It's a fair-weather aircraft, but it's the most fun ever. I've had it up to Northport and Suttons bay! Love that area. Sorry about your Cirrus...
Next time your up that way feel free to park at my beach. We’re .25 from town, south of the marina. No need to ask, just show up and pull in. If I see you I’ll say hi. All seaplanes are welcome. maps.app.goo.gl/N4RA1bTsQWQdAjSz5?g_st=ic
northern michigan is beautiful. - great touch-n-go's !!!!, i used to ski northern mich. , boyne highlands, boyne mountain, nubs-nob, among others, but the water up there is like none other.
❤🎉
Be the Swan NOT the Duck, son.😉😉
I love airplanes... Glad you do too.
gonna be gnarrrrrly
Nice landing. Looked tricky. And, like, wtf with not getting you through Charlotte
Outstanding. Keep at it.
Nice landing! This April in Mi sure has been windy I fly out of Z98
It’s been really windy. All that warm air in and out has made it interesting.
you had to wrestle that down.
Both times. That whole flight was a lot of work!
I live near Charlotte. Their runways are north south. They're never going to let you cross over the top from your direction. Your best chance would be to line yourself up so that you cross over the top going pretty much due west and staying low at 4000-5000 so that you don't interfere with the airplanes flying downwinds at 10000. T398 is the route they want you to take to cross. Sometimes they let you use it. Sometimes they don't. I don't know why. Re: the vibration, when I had a similar problem, my A&P suggested that maybe my nose wheel was vibrating in the wind and that was translating into the cabin. Maybe stick a camera on the tail tiedown to see if anything is vibrating on the gear...? Wow. Cool effect pulling the car out and putting the airplane in.
Thanks for the tip! It looks like it might have been one plug going intermittent.
Great video - The deserts at Cloud 9 are incredible - 2 hours from me KAAS, but worth the hop over.
Dang! I usually get desert to go but it was too bumpy. Next time!
Nice flight. Rad transition at the end in the hangar 🤙
Thanks. My dude Doyle worked on this episode and he was quite hyped on that composite.
