I'm trying to do this but I've got a big problem, after deleting all those bones when i try to move the head to the other model's body the armature doesn't follow, in fact if I click the armature itself neither one moves, choosing both doesn't work either. How did you make the armature turn white at 4:04? maybe if I knew how to do that... for what it's worth I've been trying to move it around with G cause that's what normally works. I think I might've just figured it out, it just had transform locks on it, luckily simple but other not so simple things can probably cause it too.

legit so helpful even 3 years later wtf
works like a charm, awesome tutorial 👍
Thank so much! Happy its helping people out
I’ve followed so many tutorials step by step but im not sure why mine just isn’t working Has this happened to anyone else?
Yea this functionality is a bit more tricky relative to its in game functionality. What is the issue that you're running into?
@@wron1 so I do everything they say and it works in Unity but when I go into either play mode on Unity or VRchat itself, the wheel doesn’t work at all
@@BunFrFr Ah gotcha, just assuming your animations work by themselves, some possible (and quite common) issues that you should double check are your base layer weight in your animator is 1 and not 0, check that the animator is added onto your model and added into the FX layer of your avatar descriptor, and also check out your blend tree animations. The section at 2:28 is really key and if the checking process at 3:10 doesn't work for you I would double check your animations. Hopefully this might help you out some.
@@wron1 Alright thank you! I’ll try this out in a bit and get back to you!
@@wron1 thank you! I was able to figure it out! Much appreciated!
Hey man. Can I hire you to do this for me?
Sorry man my time is really valuable as of recent so I'll have to decline. I would recommend checking out some creator discords and looking for some people to help you out there.
when i hit fix model after separating the head from the first model it makes all of the materials turn pure white.
When you go to the matirials tab, how do you have it that you can assign, select and deselect things on there? i dont have that option
WALLAH I LOVE YOU
For some reason I still get the error when clicking fix model. I've unchecked connect bones and it still does it
How do you get your bones to be transparent (only the outline showing, not filled in)? Mine are solid gray and it makes it so hard to see the avatar. In Viewport I can only switch to stick etc, but I like the Octahedral - I just wish they were transparent like yours.
If you go into your object properties tab (orange square in the sidebar located 4 above bone properties) then go to Viewport Display and select Display As "Wire" which will make your bones only display their outline. In my case typically CATS just changes that for me when I fix a model. Hope this helps!
@@wron1 Wire option just shows them as straight lines for me so that's not it. But I downloaded Blender 2.93 and it seems older Blender version automatically shows bones like this. The new 3.5 Blender I just couldn't find that option and I tried everything under Viewport. :S
@@kassixo Oh okay, I believe you may have been in the bone settings? I'm talking about the tab shown here: docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/editors/properties_editor.html but then again it could be a discrepancy between versions or something, blender is so weird sometimes lol. Hope you find a permanent fix!
@@wron1 omg YES that seems to do it! Thank you so much! For some reason earlier Blender versions had that option on default and honestly none of the avatar creators have been able to help with this so far, so I thought it just got changed in newer Blender. TYSMMM!
@@kassixo Noice! Glad I could help!
Thank you! Everything worked like a charm. Had to mess with animators a little more since I use other custom ones, but it was possible in the end. Great tutorial!
Glad the vid helped!
Hello, this definitely seems to be a step in the right direction for me, but I seem to be having an issue and hope you can help! So I tried this method and it definitely works when I test the toggle to make it invisible, but when it comes to making it visible again nothing happens. There is no dissolve animation that occurs to make it visible again and the mesh just stays invisible completely, despite the set up that I have. I am doing this for the whole body, but if you have any ideas that can help it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, thank you for the help in this video!
Ah gotcha, so assuming you're running into a similar issue I was having, I believe the way to remedy this is to have an item on your character which doesn't disappear completely. The issue I ran into was that I would toggle off the model and then this would cause there to be no controller or anything to be toggled back on (atleast to my knowledge). So only toggling the player mesh off and keeping something visible with an invisible shader was how I fixed my problem. I haven't seen how other people do it but there may be a better way than my suggestion. Hope this helps some!
really straight forward and easy to follow, thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Is this only for the Avatars on pc?
Not sure to be honest. I made this tutorial with PC models in mind only. I have seen some amazing things done for quest though also. I would highly recommend searching for a quest specific tutorial!
@@wron1 from what i saw, on quest you can only use the "toonlit" texture, so basically it won't glow. Maybe there's a way to do that but after searching for a whole week and found nothing, i just give up😅
I know you posted this a year ago, but I have to thank you. I have followed 5 other videos, and they did not work, not a single one. You helped me step by step, and after a few hours (Due to errors on my part) I finally got my first toggle done and I can happily take a break lol.
Sweet! Glad my vid is still helping people out!
how do i move the bones with the head??
My b for the late reply, it is just due to mesh mapping to the bone. You can do this the same way you add clothes to a model. If you mean how did I move the bone with my mouse which moved the head, then that is by changing to pose mode and rotating the bone.
maybe i missed something or just flat out my end, but trying to do this, got it all working so great. but when i change worlds or switch in and out of the avi the materials revert back to the 1st state. any ideas on how to get it to i guess stay in memory which state to keep it in?
Ah sorry for the late reply, I've personally never experienced this problem. Even swapping between models my avatar settings stay the same. Perhaps there is an update that might have changed that, but I would double check your toggles. Is this happening with any other toggles on your model, besides the radial wheel ones?
@@wron1 all good, turns out i just didn't tick the "saved" box
What do I do if I have an armature modifier that I cannot apply because it keeps saying "modifier cannot be applied to a mesh with shape keys" if I get rid of it in blender, the mesh doesn't follow the armature in pose mode. if I ignore it, it works in blender, but doesn't in unity, and stays in a T pose when I attach my clothes to my avatar.
Hmmm you could try removing the shape keys? Assuming this is on the clothing/item you are adding onto the model. Which armature modifier and which mesh is having the issue? Is the mesh the model or the added item? You definitely don't want to remove the shape keys on the model. Something that I always try which can be time consuming but save my sanity is running similar procedures in blender using similar items that I can keep as a sort of baseline
my materials all flicker in-game, is there a way to fix that?
So I'm not 100% sure of a fix since it could be a variety of things causing it. However assuming it's due to the methods in the video a possible reason could be due to the animation timings set to change materials. It is possible that you have some overlap causing the materials to toggle back and forth at rest. You could also possibly have some conflicting toggles adding different materials at the same time
Great video thanks you explain things really well. Would this work if I wanted to resize clothes to fit my Avatar only? So after making the changes (size, fit, rig, weights) I then deleted the base model, kept the clothes and retained the rigging that I wanted to use for import to Unity? My reason for asking is I'd like to use the same clothes on different base Avatar models of a similar type in Unity, what do you think?
Im not entirely sure on the process since I have never tried that method, however I did find a video which might be what you're looking for here: ua-cam.com/video/qMi4NM5-ZAA/v-deo.html However this version seems to be a bit complex, hope it helps!
Thanks for adding that link it is helpful, I'll have a look at the blend shapes in Unity and see if I can get other clothes to fit different Avatars for VRChat.
Great tutorial! I am a little confused because you mentioned you were working on a duplicate of your avatar - how does this toggle tie back to the original avatar?
Ah yea so the animator controls all of the animations and the way unity handles animations is object based. So running animations on a duplicate is essentially the same as working on the original. This whole system, however, is most likely outdated due to how quickly updates have come out for the SDK since. Feel free to work out of the original!
@@wron1 thank you for the quick reply!
How do you make other clothes come off when you toggle a piece of clothing kn
Or a specific blendshape
@@kaimatter2748 I'm not 100% on blendshapes but for clothing I have a video detailing more complex toggles here: ua-cam.com/video/H0IgLzfHuMk/v-deo.html I would assume that toggling blendshapes can also be done the same way. Hope it helps!
way too complicated for me sorry
this is the best video has helped me a lot but i have had some issues when using this method you see when i use it in VRchat occasionally will disappear for myself or other if they look at it at a certain angle
That sounds like a bounding box issue, I highly recommend checking out this creator's video. They explain this situation very well, ua-cam.com/video/ox6d9Pd9AnY/v-deo.html

So helpful, this is awesome!
woahhhhh cool
Thank you. Helped me allot.
OMFG. This was the best tutorial on multi-material swapping possible. Understandable and effective... and nice life suggestions at the end as a bonus.
Thanks a bunch!
Just a little heads up with this explanation guys. I skipped over some steps like setting up toggles/menus and file layouts since this is a more advanced tutorial. I move a bit quicker here than in my more beginner friendly explanations. The "Expressions Menu" which I mention at 4:03 can sometimes be referred to as an FX menu since it facilitates the UI which controls the FX animator. This animator (FX) being the one I am working out of and the one that is attached to my model. Hopefully this helps with some confusion. Thanks for watching! and my apologies for a more laid back explanation.
have you got a link to download the radial wheel
Not sure what you mean, are you asking if you can download this process so you can drag and drop it onto your model?
@@wron1 no I'm asking if you need to import a tool or is it already in the vrchat SDK3
@@jakecoles1575 Ah gotcha! Its just a part of the VrChat expression menu which is included in the SDK. If you right click in the file window and select create new, click on VrChat and then you'll see the options for the parameter/expression menus, just in case you didn't know! 4:06 is where I cover the addition of the radial wheel. Its just called radial puppet inside the menu. So in game when selected you'll get that cool wheel!
@@wron1 sorry for the late reply it worked thank you

any advice for aligning the shoulders on a hoodie/long sleeve shirt?
Oooh um, I guess just being really patient with it is my best advice. Some models are gonna have biiig shoulders and clothes will just look weird. Something you can do is toggle off the body underneath the clothing when the hoodie is on and toggle the body on when the hoodie is off. That way you dont have to fight with the shoulders and can keep the look of the hoodie
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You taught me something I've always wanted to learn but always felt like I couldn't do! :) I was cheering at my desk. Phenomenal tutorial man, subbed! Thank you so much!!!!
Aye! Nice! Im so glad it helped!
thanks for the help
I can't even see for the way of you clicking. the menu is too small
Oh sorry about that, I'll try and label/zoom more next time, thanks for letting me know!
So i tried this but it just skips trough the materials witout me using the radial puppet ^^" probably some stupid mistake i made but is there a fix?
It sounds like there may be an issue in your expressions menu perhaps? I would double check that my toggle parameter is the same throughout, it could also be a really simple mistake like having the base layer not set to 1. It sounds like it is working though so there is some hope!
it does the same for me, did you find a solution?
You should download the recommended unity version. 2019.4.31f1
doing it like this will I be able to make a toggle for the shirt in unity afterwards? or would I have to do something else in blender?
As of the finished product at the end you would be 100% ready to go in unity. The only requirements for something to be toggle-able in unity is that it is a separate mesh from the main model (case by case of course). So in the blender hierarchy if you can delete something/hide something without it effecting your main model then that is the exact effect that it will have in unity with a toggle!
@@wron1 Oh alrigh, tysm
pretty cool, but i noticed on many models these days the body part underneatht he clothing item either disappear or get shrunk down to minimize the clipping as much as possible without making the clothes bigger and make it look weird on the model. and i would like to know how that is done
Well particularly with female models its a bit more necessary due to all the bouncy bits, a large part of the time clipping comes down to polygons not lining up. So if your shirt is a lower poly count then your body they won't act the same way during motion and you'll get a lot of clipping. Using high quality clothing assets built specifically around your model is how people tend to avoid clipping. However there are some tricks. Like, you can completely hide parts of the body that tend to push through clothing, sides of the boobs, nipples, shoulders, waist, etc. Then this way when the clothing is on the body mesh underneath is not visible. I believe that this might be what you're referring too. This method does result in some issues in some viewing angles which you can definitely fix. I suppose you could also shrink down parts of the body that is definitely something you can do, however I feel like you might run into some issues assuming you scale down to 50% and the clothing and body are weighed the same. I've never tried it but there miiight be some issues perhaps. Ultimately these would just be toggles/animations done in unity. So like when you toggle on the clothing you also toggle off the body/toggle the body part shrink Hope some of this helps!
Thank you for this lovely tutorial! It worked great! I had a panic after I came back because I thought I lost all my layers n stuff but after creating another protect and starting over... I realized I simply didn't have the controller selected. ...I'm new. I deserve that.
Amazing! Glad it worked for you, I think this might be one of my more complicated tutorials so I'm glad it worked for you! Also trust me even with doing this for a while I still make small mistakes lol
Hello, everything worked fine for me, but how do I make the mesh of the head and the body stick together because when I stretch the head, the neck stays still even though the bones are connected well?
Did you ever find a solution for this? When I move the neck bone the head moves great with the neck. When I move the head bone up, I see a hole into the head even tho I connected the verticied from the head to the neck. Is this because they're still a separate mesh? 😵💫
@@kaylak1761 I didn't find a solution, but I realized that sometimes it's the skin, it's poor to do it with another body and there was no problem, but when I used it with the one I had, then the error just appeared, it seems that the error depends on the skin Not all of them have that error
Really good tutorial tanks
Thank you for this
so i need to have the avatar saved entirely with the piece of clothing on and then a version of the avatar with it off? or just the avatar with all of the clothing meshes not merged with the body and then toggle it invisible? im just a little confused, sorry
From blender you just need to have a version of the model with everything on it. In unity you can turn things on or off and those on/off states carry into vrchat, hope this helps a bit!
@@wron1 ill try it out myself and see if i can figure it out, thank you ^^''
So for some reason I cannot select bones. If I click Armature, it highlights them all, but I can't shift click and delete them in small batches to save the ones I need to keep
It might be because you aren't in edit mode? Try selecting the armature then clicking tab
@@wron1 I was in edit mode which is why it was weird, and when selecting Armature it of course highlights it all, but then when shift clicking, it doesn't do anything. I ended up needing to switch to pose mode to get it to work, but then that for some reason broke all the texture paths for the other model
