This video shows a laser beam used to cut and weld sheets of plastic as single manufacturing process. The energy of laser was optimised to be able to cut and weld polyester sheets using the same laser source. This video shows an airplane structure that was printed with a thruster that has no moving parts! The 3D printed plane had conductive electrodes laser-cut on its wings. When high voltage is applied between the electrodes the ions movement form a thrust. This has enabled the ultra-light plane to move without any propellers!

This project investigated using 𝐶𝑂2 laser ablation as a route to engraving microchannels onto a Poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate. The digitally-driven nature of this approach facilitates rapid iterative construction of passive microfluidics enabling a range of flow and mixing conditions to be achieved.

      You are right that a current challenge with Shape Memory Alloy actuators is their slow response speed. Researchers are seeking to improve response speeds while still being able to generate large force and displacement outputs

      @@futuremanufacturingprocess9003 Yes, bi-directional control, response time as well as precision, essential in prosthesis design. If shape-memory alloys respond to a large temperature differential, it makes them impractical for prosthesis, but if they respond to a small temperature differential, then they become difficult to control as the ambient temperature of humans does vary as they go about their daily business.
