Oklahoma Quail Hunting & Truck Camping--January, 2024

This was a return trip to Oklahoma but to a new WMA for us. We used dog boots for the first time, and this made a big difference in how well the dogs held up in this country. Not a ton of birds but still a fun trip!

Junior On Birds at 6 Months

This is Junior on pigeons at 6 months. He has made great progress (if I may say) with not much training. I'm very happy with his ease of handling and intensity to find birds. A good combination. I'm looking forward to getting Junior on as many wild birds as possible this coming season.

Dispersed Truck Camping: My dog Hank and I spend a night at Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest... including dinner and breakfast. We tried out several new features of the truck-camping setup, including a refrigerator, freezer, stove to cook inside the truck and a movie projector. All went well!
Awning for Truck Camping (MoonShade Awning)
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
In this video I show the awning I use when truck camping. This awning (MoonShade Awning) has proven to be easy to use, good in the rain, and versatile for different truck setups. Having an awning for truck camping is especially useful for longer trips that may include bad weather.

Merci pour la video et BRAVO, Nice hunting.
Please make more wing shooting videos !!! I enjoy watching your truck camping hunting adventures !!!!
I'm planning to. I was in Michigan last week, but I don't think I got enough content for a video. I'll be leaving for Idaho in a couple of weeks and will definitely be getting video while there. I appreciate your comment and am also looking forward to the next upland video.
Do you mind me asking what WMA this is
Peabody WMA
Great video ty
Thank you!!
This is really helpful. I'm at season .5 with my Moonshade for dog sports, and I really, really like it. I bought mine used so it came without the magnets and suction cups, and while I was preparing to order one or the other, I saw the videos on the Moonshade website about using Gear-ties to secure to a roof rack or rails. You'd save yourself some zip ties and the need to cut them off using a Gear-tie for your middle securing point, and you could probably omit the magnets altogether if you used three Gear-ties, since the strut bar secures very well to even my simple rails, and your roof rack would work even better plus give you that additional height. You could even play with how much of the awning you want to extend if there was a reason to not use the full 9 feet of length. I use Aluminet for additional screening and shade, which you can see in this album: facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=jona.decker.1&set=a.8737125436346178
New follower that loved the video! Get HANK his own YT channel! (Cool K9!)
Thanks for watching and following!! I agree with you about Hank... he is definitely one of my best buds. He could definitely have his own channel. Thanks again!
What WMAs are you hunting? From MI and new to KY. Love the videos and dog work!! I wanna get my britt out there soon
In KY I was at Peabody. It's kind of a tough place to hunt until you spend some time there. Thanks for watching, and welcome to KY!
Amazing dog handling! Are you hunting in the GEMS or other state land?
Thanks for watching! There is a GEM area close to where I am, but I haven't been there yet. I've been in National and State forests. Thanks again!
Funny you found woodies. My numbers were way way down in 23
Hey...thanks for watching. I did end up finding quite a few Woodcock, and by the end of the trip that's what I was looking for. I wanted to get my younger dogs on birds. I'll actually be working some new dogs again this year, but I'm hoping to get on more grouse. Thanks again, and good luck!
Hello, i enjoyed your video and watching your dogs work. I was wondering, can you camp out of your truck anywhere in the national forest? I would like to take my 14 year old son up for some grouse hunting. Thanks.
Hey... that is my understanding. There may be some places with special regulations or designated areas, but I've always just camped where I wanted with both National Forests and BLM land. I hope you guys have good luck! Thanks for watching!
@@thebirdbum9182 thank you for the quick response sir. I really appreciate it!
Find a opening on those points no tree interference
Thanks for watching! I can definitely do better at figuring out shooting lanes... if birds fly like I expect them to. Thanks again!
Hi! Matt here from Louisville. I have a 1 year old American Brittany. This is our first hunting season - would love to connect.
Thank you! Great video.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video sir but if your planning to release a fish please wet your hands first thanks 😊
Thanks! I agree on wetting hands.
hey Brady, Miss Sandy Dont handel thunder to well at all. Very nice trip, and camp. did you put up any birds ?? Hunted on top of Grand Mesa a few times, always a bunch of grouse . That fly fishing sure is fun, I catch far more brush than anything, but I like it think you might make it up here this year? hope you do.
Thanks Gil! I lost quite a few flies in the brush and also getting hung up on the bottom... I used nymphs mostly. It was a fun trip. I'm definitely hoping to make it up that way this year. If I do, it will be in late October... like the week of the 28th.
Oh... I forgot your question about birds. I did see one Blue Grouse by the road while I was there, but that was it. I would like to try them sometime. Big bird. I spoke with someone who said there is a pretty good population of Ruffed Grouse there, too.
I feel like I keep saying this but this is my favorite video of yours yet! Truly an awesome video, sir! Could have watched you fly fish for an hour. Really enjoyed your tour of Creede and I’ll definitely be watching that documentary! That footage of Clear Creek waterfall was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching and for your comment!! Creed really is an interesting town. I think people travel quite a ways just to visit Creed. Thanks again, and I hope you're well!
My Bayley gets nervous about thunder too. Great video it looks like you and Hank are getting to be fine food connoisseurs.
That's funny about becoming fine food connoisseurs... not quite. But it is getting better. I hope everything is going well!
Greetings from Ky. I’m on the verge of retiring and I’m getting ready to go truck camping and fishing through out the US. When you get home can I reach out to you and chat about the truck camping and travels?
Sure... send me an e-mail with your contact info and I'll be happy to share any knowledge have. Thanks for watching the video! e-mail: quailridgebrittanys@gmail.com
Absolutely love your truck camping and quail hunting videos. Can’t wait for quail season
You and me both on quail season! Thank you for watching!
Sure would like to see Colorado again but this time as an adult. But they sure do make it hard to defend yourself if you visit a big city seems to be even worse with Venezuelan gang members taking over.
I heard about some of that on the radio, but of course I didn't see hardly anyone. It was a fun trip. Thanks for watching!
Great videos sir really enjoy and appreciate them
Glad you like them!
❤ amazing drone footage ❤
Thank you!
I found a 1950’s Dr. Pepper in the woods recently, and some liberal told me that it was illegal to take “historic relics” from public lands… 😂
LOL... I still have my bottle.
I wanted to ask - what is the o/u you are using? Looking at the forend, it looks like a CZ Upland Ultralight. I’m a Wisconsin native who hunts with my Brittany, as we migrate north each fall for the grouse and woodcock. Cheers to a successful and safe 2024!
You are correct! That is a 12-gauge CZ Upland Ultralight with a 26" barrel. You're lucky to be as close as you are to the grouse woods. Thanks for watching and have a successful and safe season!
Very nice! Tacos looked great and thats a nice place to camp.
The tacos were surprisingly good. I really am planning to do that again. Thanks for your comment!
@@thebirdbum9182 You mentioned a boat. I'm contemplating either a inflatable raft like NRS produces, or an actual drift boat. Of course it always depends on the water a guy likes to fish.
@@billquantrill4960 Those both sounds like good options. I want to get around on this larger lake some, but would also like to do some drift fishing for trout in the tailwaters of Lake Cumberland here in KY. I feel like I could do both with a jon boat... but we'll see.
You would not be able to tell you haven't fly fished in 20 years! You didn't miss a beat!
Thanks for your comment. I was able to edit some stuff out LOL!
Nice, you just need to get rid of the double. 😂.....If it's not thick, it's not the right cover.
That's funny... sometimes an extra shot or two would be good. I need um!! Thanks for watching.
@thebirdbum9182.... I have gotten a few birds on that 3rd round that the law allows. Nobody hunting with me is allowed to carry a double. If someone shows up with one, they have to sit in the truck. We have standards. 🤣🤣🤣
ua-cam.com/video/Xr8JAK_TSCw/v-deo.htmlsi=7gRVn23YlAg3cFzP
You were asking about a boat. If you don't use the basket on top much, remove it and leave the rack for a kayak. The right one would be perfect for truck camping. I duck hunt so I use one of my layout boats. About the same size as kayaks.
Actually, that's a really good idea that I hadn't thought of. The basket is easy to take off and put on whenever I would need it, so that would work well. Thanks for that suggestion!
That stovetop and frying pan on the table up against the shades at 14:00 ish looks a bit dangerous….that could be a pretty bad fire hazard. Stay safe!
Grease fire is extremely hard to put out
I agree. I have since this video arranged to have the shades out of the way if I'm cooking in there now. That was the first time I tried it. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Nice video, thanks! Have you tried to figure out some side walls with tarps, to increase privacy and weather protection?
Thanks for your comment! I haven't done that yet, but it's a good idea to think about. It's strong enough that you could probably clip a tarp along the length of the awning and let hang down. In fact, I will give that a try this fall. Thanks again!
What size jackberry do you have
I went with the 1500, which can power everything I'm using. It will also work with an electric heater, but it won't run the entire night for heat.
Awesome video buddy thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! I hope you find some of it helpful. Thanks again!
Really like the setup, I love the table setup, and surprised on how much room you can have in the little space.
Thanks for your comment! It is actually more comfortable than I thought it would be when I started figuring it out. Since this video, I've added an extra shelf and fridge/freezer, which I talk about in the 2023 Danial Boone National Forest video. Thanks again!
Great video
Thank you!!
Absolutely beautiful! Might have to visit sometime soon! 😁 Hope you’ve been well, man!!
Thank you, Thomas! I just listened to "Direct Demise" and liked it! you should develop more content. Thanks again, Thomas!
@@thebirdbum9182 I have a few posted, but I’m working on more 😁 ua-cam.com/video/4gt26LoB3oI/v-deo.htmlsi=E1l2kXXLMEhuRQ_q
Absolutely incredible episode, sir!!! As always, the food looked amazing, camping in the truck was excellent (especially with the AC), Hank cracked me up stealing your spot in bed. Very happy to hear you’re back info fly fishing (my absolute favorite kind of fishing! Loved every minute of it other than you rolling your ankle. Hoping that heals up soon! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the very kind words! This was a fun trip. The ankle is getting better, so all's well that ends well. Thank you for watching!
Looks like in your site 116 or 117 ,both very good for privacy and seclusion. Probably my favorite place to solo camp & fish. Late Winter the fishing is "VERY GOOD" in the creek.
Wow! I was in 116. You've been there a few times for sure. I might try again in late winter... and it's probably pretty easy to get a camping spot then. Thanks for your comment!
@thebirdbum9182 I posted the comment before I seen were you fell. Hope your ankle is better. Ale8one & chicken looked "GREAT".
@@markmurphykyflyyaker6874 Thank you! The ankle is doing much better now. I think there must have been some mud down there where the Cumberland rises with dam releases. It was unusually slick. That dinner was great... I ate until uncomfortable. Thanks again!
Chicken looked good but while watching I thought to myself he better give Hank a piece and you did! Enjoyed the video.
I agree... Hank always has to get a piece of his own. I'm glad you appreciated that! Thanks for watching!
Thank buddy to show us beautiful face of nature keep it up
Thank you!!
Nice little Brown! I don’t particularly enjoy the heat for camping/fishing. Let’s go Fall grouse hunting!
Yep, that was a brown. I agree on the heat... the AC does help some with the camping. I'm ready to get after some birds! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks for sharing! Love your videos, from Georgetown, KY.
Thanks for watching! You're not that far away. We live in the Morehead area. Thanks for your comment, too!
Nice trip, well done!
Thank you!
That meal looked great! Have to try it sometime. Enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing!
I was actually surprised by how good the food turned out. If you like chicken tenders I would definitely give it a try. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
great video, thanks for posting
Thank you!!
Food looks good ❤
Thank you 😋
Looked like a great trip. Thanks for sharing and God bless!
Thank you!!
Love Canes! Gotta drive an hour north to get some.. which we do often. We have Slim Chickens but it isnt Canes. Also enjoyed the video, we're currently waiting on the weather to cool a bit. I can't handle the heat anymore.
The Cane's actually turned out pretty well. We also have to go an hour to get some, but this could be a good alternative. The heat was pretty bad on this trip. I'm really looking forward to fall when I need heat instead of AC. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
@@thebirdbum9182 it's been years since I've been to the hatchery, but I caught my biggest Walleye just below the dam there. I have fished below the hatchery along with a thousand other fisherman trying to land a big trout haha. Use to be a popular place in the 80s.
What Camara do you use for videos, or what would you recommend? Thanks
Hey... for most of my stuff I use a GoPro 11. It has taken me some time to use it more effectively, but I'm pretty comfortable with it now. I also occasionally use a Cannon Rebel when I want a more detailed look at something. Thanks for watching!
Just discovered your videos and really enjoying. What over under shotgun are you using? 12 or 20?
Welcome! I'm using a 12-gauge CZ Upland Ultralight. Not an expensive gun but effective... if I do my part. Thanks for watching!
Wow that looks great
Thanks! It has worked pretty well for me.
