Wallke Ebike Ride to Ghost Town Daniels, Maryland - #28
On this ebike tour, Lori and I go on our most physically demanding ride to date. We bike nearly 50 miles that included very rugged terrain into the ghost town of Daniels, Maryland. In this video I compare how it looked in the 1800's to the ruins now. If you plan to go....

Lori and I ride to Ellicott City, MD, a quaint little town full of all kinds of history from the past 300 years. Our first stop was the Thomas Isaac cabin built in 1780. Our next stop was the Ellicott City Colored School, in operation from 1880 to 1953.

The old saying, "he that lives by the sword dies by the sword" can be applied to many situations. In this case it's, "he that lives by technology dies by technology. Lori and I had plotted a tour on the Komoot app to Catonsville, Maryland. It's wonderful when the app works but when it's doesn't, it completely sucks. I'm wasting money subscribing to an app that's hit or miss at best. Anyway, we ...
Wallke Ebike Ride Through Baltimore Suburb - #23

I'm riding solo this week. On Wallke's Facebook page, a Wallke owner posted how much better his rides are since he bought a suspension seat post. I've been putting all my efforts into trying to find the most comfortable seat but hearing this about the seat post made me redirect my focus. On this ride, I'm trying out my new suspension seat post while riding through a Baltimore suburb.

But you get to see part of the very popular Baltimore Annapolis Trail.

Because of a bike tour I have in the future, I needed to know the exact limitations of the ebike that I will be riding. Oh, the places we go! 😳 Like you said, "This is one of the places we are happy to visit...once." I did enjoy this very long ride and learning the history of the area! 💗
That's right, I can't see going back. LOL. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. Stay tuned for future rides! Thank you!
cool 💪
Thank you! 👍
Cool - you went to the Baltimore County side!! I've never been there so it was great to finally see it. So you going to get one of the charge adapters now? (I saw the charging station)
Eventually I'm going to get one just for peace of mind. Have you used yours yet?
@@brucethomas3929 No, the weather this week screwed with my biking schedule. Maybe Sunday if I'm lucky.
Nice bit of local history. My wife used to go to the craft fairs held at the church (she even had booth there at least once) about 20 years ago. I'd take my son over to the old/abandonded road and we'd hike up it searching in the ruins. The old church on the Howard County is kinda spooky. The other side of the river is Baltimore County - my son has told me of more ruins there but I haven't checked it out, yet. Another interesting ride Bruce!
If you want to check it out, we parked at the lot to your right (@15:41). Head West/Southwest, cross the tributary, and you will see the path that leads you onto the remains of the old road. Then enjoy exploring!
I'd love to see the inside of the church. The HC side has easier access but that weekend, there were just too many people to contend with to explore the trails. The BC side was definitely physically challenging and the overgrowth of vegetation made things difficult to see. You could probably see more ruins in early spring. In 1968 the Daniels company bulldozed the community and in 1972, hurricane Agnes finished the job. Thank you for viewing Forest! More rides to come!
Look around a bit more if that camera is on your head though please.
It's mounted on my chest and I'm limited because I have to turn my whole body. I'll see what I can do about your request.

I would have tried to get a better vantage point but he state has been neglectful with trimming back the vegetation from the path. There's a huge difference between my video and videos created on the same path from 2-3 years ago. Thanks so much for watching my friend!
Waterfall...cool
There was a lot of people swimming there... 95% of which were the ones that made you enact parking permits when you were the Mayor.
@@brucethomas3929 ..ha ha ha
@@brucethomas3929 Did you notice all the new 'No Parking' signs along the edge of the road? They have been installing them on roads that border the park - particularly if there is water access. Where you pop out of Patapsco State's parks swining bridge onto Bonnie Branch Road/River Road? In the summer I've seen them running tow trucks for 'illegally parked' vehicles of people enjoying the river.

Still all a part of Patapsco Valley State Park. The park is huge!
@@brucethomas3929You aren't kidding! I just looked it up on the map, basically the entire river from the mouth in the inner harbor all the way up to Liberty Reservoir is parkland!
Icehouse...always amaze me...
Yes. A previous creator said they had no electricity or running water but that looks like a light on the steeple of the church.
Always great history!
Thanks. I happened upon a UA-cam video and my curiosity took over.
It's about time you sang a song to us....
Haha. The jets from BWI were flying overhead and an old Pan Am jingle came to mind from my boyhood days.
Haven't I told you Kamoot is a problem child?
LOL. You're telling the truth! It has been the bane of my bike tours.
I love that you mention FT Smallwood park. One of my favorites, and free for veterans. They have a small beach (though bigger than North Beach ) and when the FSK bridge went down it had the best viewing area for watching the removal of the destroyed bridge. BTW - you had that other video where you mentiooned the Nike Missles in the Baltimore area? At 21:11 you are passing by one of the former Nike launch facilities (which is now owned by the county).
Really!?? Wow! That is amazing! I live minutes from the former FSK bridge and I haven't been able to find a vantage point to view its remains. I wish I would have thought of Ft. Smallwood park. Thank you!
@@brucethomas3929 Best viewing location is halfway between the fort and the pavilion near basketball court. There is a parking area and the large playground on the other side of the road.
The school too!! Nice, it's never been open when i stopped by. This has been quite the historical trip.
The school and cabin was being at the right place at the right time. I'm happy that bit of information is now in my brain. 😄
Thanks for stopping by the cabin! I've seen it for years but never stopped by. Great history lesson along with a bike ride!
Hey Forest! I hope you and your wife had a wonderful vacation! I've also seen that cabin for years and years and wondered about its history. It was a real treat that it was open.
@@brucethomas3929 we had a great time, thanks!
Google, and i believe Apple, can use Wi-Fi signals to help fix your position. The routers locations are roughly known, so by determining which signals are detected they can get a rough location. It's similar to how they used to get location based on what cell towers can connect to your phone.
Thanks Forest. Makes sense.

How did you like the evening ride?
I would have enjoyed it more with a stronger headlight. I have a very strong light that I'll add.
I had an idea, Bruce did you swap the batteries between your Walkies or Lori's!
My major criticism is that Wallke is not consistent with their manufacturing and it seems that they make changes every few months, so that out of the 4 Wallkes we have, only two bikes are able to swap batteries.
@@brucethomas3929 I had a thought that that maybe you swapped a battery meant for the 15 amp bike with the one for the 28 amp bike. Such that the battery couldn't provide the power demanded by the controller. Normally I wouldn't consider that, but Walkies have that neat drop in battery system.
@@ebike_tinkerer Oh, I see. No, they're not swappable.

Don't get wrapped up in the 'Nuclear' aspect of the Nike missle bases. They were surface to air systems used to protect the coastal cities from Soviet bombers. Not all were nuclear, and their power was low compared to ICBMs and SLBMs. They were all decommissioned in the early 70s with much of the land being turned over to the locals. One of the Baltimore sites is now a dog kennel. It's a neat bit of history, it's been a hobby of mine too seek out the sites and visit if possible. The two most interesting in our area is the Granite MD site which is now a civil air patrol facility, and there is one in the DC suburbs in Montgomery Co that is a FEMA storage facility. Of you want to see what they looked like in their hey day, you'll have to go visit the site in the Everglades that protected Miami. It's a National Park exhibit.
I learned something from you about the Nike Missile Site. The one in Granite sounds worthy of a possible bike ride. There's also one in Phoenix, MD. The one that I actually saw was on a back road in the Beltsville area, near the Goddard Space Center. But it looked more up to date than the ones decommissioned.
@@brucethomas3929 if you check out the Military Wiki (Google list of Nike Sites) they have an excellent list of all the US sites and their current status (building that are still standing). During that time Hawk missile systems were also deployed, though they didn't need permanent structures. One such battery was located on the grounds of the old Ft Armistead Gun Battery (South end of the Key Bridge). I think that might be in bike range of your home. Granite is a pretty area, but it has hills!
Neat ride, I was wondering how you were getting from your home to Catonsville! I'm surprised you didn't mention all the music shops on the drag along with the restaurants. It's a nice downtown to stroll along.
Hey Forest, the first time I went to Catonsville, it was all back roads through warehouses, the back streets of Arbutus and through UMBC. I tried to get Komoot to utilize nearby trail instead of all street.
@@brucethomas3929 I like Arbutus, good pizza place there called Sorrento's, and yeah it's right next to UMBC and Catonsville so that would be an awesome trip! I'm not familiar with trails on that area other than the single tracks into Patapsco Park from Rolling Road. I think the NYC crew used that park and ride near UMBC as the starting point for one of their MD rides, maybe we should check it out sometime.
@@brucethomas3929 When I first saw your video title I was thinking maybe you went through Patapsco then cut up Hilltop Road after you left the park. That would drop you on Frederick Rd on the western end of Catonsville. But that climb up Hilltop would be brutal!
@@ebike_tinkerer My intention was to go through Patapsco. Thank God we got home just in time to escape a severe thunder storm, so things worked out for the best.
