Noise Commander 3DS

I am a terrible but ambitious programmer and procrastinating musician.
In order to avoid finishing music, I decided to write a sequencer for the Nintendo 3DS to keep myself busy.
Before that I was collecting lots of music gear due to my G.A.S but was never quite happy and had complaints.
Now I expect to be on the receiving end of the complaints. I am not very happy with the current state of the app but I don't have much time to work on it as I work a regular full-time job.
Quick summary about the app:
- Playback cannot be stopped
- 12 mono tracks for sampling playback
- Two decks and a cross-fader for DJing
- Random sample loading
- Euclidean sequencing
- Tracker-like editing

I decided to not edit the video in the end, apologies for the incoherent talking, being an introvert and stupid at the same time. I forgot to mention the status of my Infrared research for midi-clock-synchronization. In short, I had no success with the USB-transceiver that I ordered because it's not supported in linux. It may have worked in windows but I haven't tried. Now I am waiting for an a...

#roland #volca #beatmaking #impression #drummachine Technically it has a live-looper but it is more of a short stutter-effect, you cannot loop an entire bar. The pads actually feel similar to the original SP-404 ones. I tend to experience pain from pressure sensitive pads such as on the Mode:Cycles way more, so I find the P-6 ones are certainly acceptable to me in the grand scheme of things. Ha...

#nintendo #3ds #portable #beatmaking #trackermusic This was what I churned out last week during in the evenings after work. My favorite by far is the one from Wednesday, I think it's got a dope vibe. Overall I noticed that I tended to overuse the ducking and sometimes inadvertently baked it when I re-sampling to a loop. Once baked, it cannot be undone. 0:00 Monday 1:01Tuesday 2:06 Wednesday 3:0...

What do I need that many 2DSes for? I don't have a sane answer to this question :D I did replace the C-Stick on the one I mentioned in the video. Alas I tore the ribbon-cable for the camera in the process. The console still works fine but the software crashes when the camera activates. It can run Noise Commander fine and probably most games unless the use the camera such as the stick AR games.
Comparing the Roland Aira Compact T-6 to Noise Commander 3DS

#roland #groovebox #handheld #audiotoys #3ds This is a re-upload because I incorrectly assumed there was 2MB sample memory on the Aira but that is definitely incorrect, it's more than that. I don't mean to spread misinformation. Expressed in seconds T-6 has 288 seconds at 44.1khz mono and NC 190 seconds (2 x 95) 44100 * 5.9 seconds * 2 bytes * 48 slots = 24978240 ~= 25MB I don't own the Aira T-...

I wanted to continue developing Noise Commander in my free week but I caught a cold. I keep finding embarrassing shortcomings almost every time I use the app. I am tired and down today, not making any progress. My throat and brain hurt. And the...

Devlog - adding microphone sampling feature to Noise Commander 3DS
I know people want to put out gear videos as fast as possible but a lot of things you won't know about until you sit with this unit for a couple months and not jump to the next new thing
Dude, I discover your project today, this idea is SO FUCKING AWESOME! I'm glad something like this exists! I will continue following and studying the tutorial Otherwise, thank you very much
Now this is so great!😮
Thanks :) After this video I ordered two infrared-transceivers but I did not get them to work fully yet. One of them is an arduino hat but needs the baud-rate to be to configured by soldering and I haven't done that. So far the 3DS can receive only a burst of garbage, which would in theory be good enough to serve as a clock pulse. But it would be amazing if it could transmit and receive full midi and convert it to DIN, that's the goal. The first one is a USB-dongle kind that I could not get to work at all. I did have success transmitting/receiving from 3DS to 3DS, no problem there.
Wow!
thank u brother this is legendary
@@DSiENT Thanks! I am about to upload new tutorial video
Superr excited to see what all more will come!!!!🥰👏🤗☦️🔥
I can't beleive this is actually a thing. Whenever you update the UI please let us know!
so cool! i love that project but again i need either work on my patience or ask for less chaotic videos. nice demos. :)
It is day one for me and i am honestly lost. I am a visual learner and i need a guide for dummies with a lot of handholding. Like script the video, timestamp it and create a comprehensive guide. It is hard to navigate for me and i could trial and error it out. But it is soooo annoying when the dpad does other things than the circle pad and then i need to use my squirrel brain to go back to the menu to figure shit out. Like i need to figure out how i get to the documentation. AHHHHHH!!! I know very early stages and i am used to things like polyend tracker. I guess big learning curve so i don't blame you. But i think your videos are chaotic and i need some help to get patterns down and attempt to learn the bare minimum required to use that app. You already mentioned it is not very user friendly right now and i totally get that. But i guess i will come back if it gets improved in that regard or there is an easy to follow categorized guide with timestamps and titles and scripted so it is easier to follow step by step for kinda stupid people like me.
All I have is excuses, apologies! A better structured tutorial with timestamps was planned but not yet delivered. Thanks for trying and investing your valid time, I share the pain. These tutorial were made in a rush with minimal time spent, sort of a rehearsal.
@NoiseCommander3DS No problem. I think the 3DS is a great device, and the idea is good. It already has many features. You're already a one-man army. I can wait, and if I'm really curious, I could try again on my own and slow it down to really get familiar with the navigation. I will surely follow your journey, even if it takes two years or more until we get that comprehensive guide. It is still very early. I'm a fan of the project because I think once you get better at that jack-of-all-trades UA-cam thing, it could be a really fun way to make music and learn new software.
@@PretendPassing I spent the evening writing a script for the next basic tutorial, it's too late to record it now though. I think this one is a lot better, shorter, concise, structured and smaller scoped. I will try to get it out in the next few days or on the coming week-end at worst. It will cover only the very basics, excluding the tracker/clip matrix and all that jazz. At that level it's similar to using an MPC or a similar device. Thanks for the kind words, I am excited that you are excited.
@NoiseCommander3DS apart from proper tutorials, some "use case demonstration" where you go through the whole process of composing a track that would help. i don't mean just improvising and doing it live, perhaps you can "redo" a track you've already done from scratch but present it as if you're doing it for the first time (does it make sense? so you had a rehearsal and steps to follow through on the second run). it doesn't have to be super detailed where you explain everything you do. sort of like this particular video but with less "confused" moments on your end, so clear, compact sessions where people can learn by observing what you did, and if they have questions, they can ask them with a time stamp. compact but rich content as i described above is imo as valuable as proper documentation or step by step tutorials.
@NoiseCommander3DS Looking forward to it. It is difficult. I also try to produce content, and my English is limited. I can understand nearly everything that interests me, but speaking is different. It's hard to explain things outside my native tongue without feeling stuck sometimes. But I will try and craft a scripted video about my personal process as well. I try to livestream and record the footage so I can cut it and make a video with proper explanation and about the tools I use and the reasoning behind my decisions. I guess my plan is to stream more often and then cut it, script it, and make voiceovers where I think I missed the opportunity to properly explain what I'm doing and why.
you are amazing, cannot wait to see what more you will add to this wonder piece of software
super exciting! charging my 3dsxl and new 3ds now! keep up the good work! this will be a nice change from M8 for me :)
This looks awesome, I’m looking forward to giving this a try 🙌

I just undust my 3DS and I saw that ! This is so friggin nice to finally have a tracker on the 3DS ! Also love the demostyle textscroll greetings ! Cant wait to see this getting v.1.0 and finally save songs innit so I can invest more time into it !!! The demotrack is really great also, totally love what I saw ! Thanks again for everything, this is exactly what I wanted on the 3DS !!!
bro this is beautiful
this is really neat! any plans to put some kind of synth engine into this?
Thanks for making this!!! Very cool 😀
it's actually beautiful
you are not stupid do i need to explain further
How much would you say has changed from version 0.0.9? I already updated, but it's been awhile since I used it. The demo track is great! Great video, too. I laughed when you said you would cut the part out where the app updated but then continued to let it run.
You can see the full changelog here github.com/gearmo3ds/noisecommander3dsdemo/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md Not too much has changed, just added the new probability features and fixed the never-ending reverb tail which became increasingly annoying. If it hadn't been for the universal updater, I would have waited and added more changes but I don't have a set rule for the release frequency. Hehe, thanks for the laugh but sorry for the wait :D Looking at the changelog make me think that I should make a video about it as half of it may be hard to follow without proper context and it could be entertaining to some.
I've been dreaming of a music tracker for the 3DS since before I even homebrewed mine... Which is to say, a long time now... This is like, the closest thing to that yet, might just give it a look, though I'm aware it may not exactly be what I'm after... Still though, great job on getting the demo out there!
Heck yeah!! Ive been wanting to try this out for ages but ive been lazy about downloading it - will absolutely give it a try! Re: youtube analytics, ive heard from much larger crestors that looking at the numbers is just about the worst thing a creator can do for themselves. Genuinely, the design of the page exists only to make you feel bad about not outputting enough. Firmly recommend paying it no mind. Focus on the important part: make cool stuff, put it on the internet. That's it. ❤
@@mistaecco Yes exactly. I didn't express it too well, you hit it right on. UA-cam studio slaps me in the face every time I look at it so I'll stop, thanks :D If the app turns out to be too painful, try again later, I don't plan to stop developing any time soon. I think it's not there yet, people get excited and then disappointed. The idea is great, the execution not quite
Yoooo this is sick. ❤

Hello. sorry to bother you. I have a problem with p6. I don't understand how I can record a jam from p6 on garageband. I tried directly via USB cable. I tried it through the audio card. the sound is distorted. I've been suffering for two months now. so far I'm sorry for the money I spent. if you know how to do this, please help. Thanks a lot.
@@consciencetrue2429 I cannot help you there, apologies. Only tried usb audio via pc, worked fine.
Does the Noise Commander works on a 2DS?
@nakucaulfield Yes, and it's my favourite model in terms of ergonomic feel
@NoiseCommander3DS thanks for replying! I'll give it a try
Are these modules available somewhere?
Looks and sounds fucking awesome. A few months ago i became kind of obsessed with non-VGM music made on game systems, and i was thinking itd be really cool for somebody to do something like this on the 3ds. I’ll definitely be trying this out
@@cooksoni.a Thanks! In all honesty though, the so is far from perfect. It's a slow after work project, it will probably take several years to "finish" it. There are more of me though, I found a bunch of other homebrew music apps for the DD/3DS. I will make a video about them :)
I know this will require additional hardware, but every 3DS is equipped with serial-over-infrared, already used by some homebrew apps, I do believe a simple IR transceiver and cheap microcontroller could provide additional control i/o to tap in, would you be on board with enabling support for such expansion?
@MaDmanEXE Yes you are the second person to suggest this. I am excited about that idea and did some research yesterday. I wonder whether to try a usb bound dongle first vs. a gpio thing with Arduino. I didn't even know about the IR on the 3DS before, very cool. I don't know what kind of speed would be achievable, whether it's feasible for more than clock. It would be amazing if it allowed for using USB-midi controllers though. Thanks!
Cool! Axoloti is a pulse repeater in this chain?
Correct
Very nice review!
Thanks! I will want to make an addendum video to say that I was wrong when I said one can swap sounds by choosing a different slice, that isn't actually possible and was wishful thinking. Also the limited sampling time makes resampling less effected than I hoped. I tend to use it as an external effect more than as a sequencer now.
This is so impressive! Bravo!
@@obiomajronyekwere4469 Thanks, I hope it's useful

@@NoiseCommander3DS thanks!
great review
Im really glad they added this nice device to the aira line. I wont be picking it up since the ko2 covers most of my needs, but im jealous of the resample ability. Right now i can resample using a voice recorder, or the m8. But i understand how powerful it is to have it built in even though ive never been able to. Anything that reduces friction of moving forward is valuable. But the m8 was my starting point for my journey back into music-making. It really beefs up other things. Ive seen people saying they returned the s1 aira due to sequencer limitations. The m8 solves that issue too. I know i went off topic a bit but, tldr: samplers are cool & more samplers are even cooler! Heheh.
@@zero.the.prototype the M8 is way superior, adding the p-6 was a bit of a guilty pleasure, I hoped that I could use it as a keyboard for the M8. I wonder whether the other airas would work instead. I think the ko2 had way longer battery life. Man there are too many little samplers and sample players on the market :D I played a bit with the M8 again yesterday, it's so well designed and does all the things right that other boxes don't.
