Ray Russell- British Guitarist, James Bond Movie Soundtracks, George Harrison "Life of Brian" etc!
Ray Russell is a British Guitarist known for his session work as lead guitarist for James Bond movies and working for George Harrison film company "Hand Made Films".
In 1963, Russell assumed Vik Flick's position as lead guitarist of the John Barry Seven. He played on the soundtracks for James Bond films - "Moonraker", "You only Live Twice", "Octopussy", "Thunderball", & with Paul McCartney on" Live and Let Die", "The Man with the Golden Gun", and Tthe Spy who Loved Me". Ray was later employed by George Harrison's company "HandMade Films" and played for the film scores of Monty Python's" Life of Brian", "Water" and "Time Bandits".
Russell's TV compositions have included "A Touch of Frost", for which he won a Royal society Television Award, "Bergerac", "Plain Jane", "A Bit of a Do", "Rich Tea" and "Sympathy", "The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries", "Dangerfield" and "Grafters", as well as "The Murder of Meredith Kercher" and BBC's"Hooded Men". He also played in the DVD "Simon Phillips Returns" with Simon Phillips and Anthony Jackson.
Ray continued to record in a jazz-fusion vein throughout the ’80s and ’90s, employing long, swooping tones, lyrical meditations, sudden mood changes, Celtic fantasias, and old-fashioned shredding on albums like WHY NOT NOW (1988), THIS SIDE UP (1989), and GUITARS FROM MARS (1990). Russell returned to his modernist roots on GOODBYE SVENGALI (2006), a tribute to Gil Evans, with whom he’d played during the ’80s. NOW, MORE THAN EVER (2013) offered Russell’s restless, bristling jazz-rock conceptions and set the stage for CELESTIAL SQUID (2016), a collaboration with California avant-guitarist Henry Kaiser that marked a majestic return to Russell’s outer-limits sensibility. Russell joined Kaiser again for THE DUKES OF BEDFORD (2020), a spontaneous live adventure featuring guitar-daredevil kinsman John Russell and bassist Olie Brice.
In March 2020, Russell featured on an episode of the BBC Television program "Antiques Roadshow", in which his fretless six-string electric guitar, made by Bartell and gifted to him by George Harrison. Ray told me in the interview there have been only three made like this!

    He said Symbiosis but I wonder if he meant to say Centipede?

    • @timflatus
      @timflatus 25 днів тому

      Centipede supposedly only did one gig in Oct 1971. I think Symbiosis was an offshoot featuring some of the members. I've seen it mentioned on a Canterbury family tree somewhere.

    • @annejean-philippeotton8073
      @annejean-philippeotton8073 23 дні тому

      Centipede was later than the event Bill mentions, plus as far as I know he wasn't even in it...

    • @timflatus
      @timflatus 22 дні тому

       @annejean-philippeotton8073 Symbiosis was contemporary with Nucleus #2 and Soft Machine #6/#7 (somewhere between Dec'69 to Oct '71) featuring Mongezi Feza (trpt), Nick Evans (tb), Gary Windo (sax), Zoot Money (keys), Robert Wyatt (kit) and someone called Steven Florence AFAIK

    • @gommecourt
      @gommecourt 22 дні тому

      Yes Symbiosis. The event as described in my recent book 'Making it up as you go along': "Anyway, Symbiosis… post Proms, Robert got involved with Keith Tippett, as SM gigs and the recording of Fourth allowed (an album notable as the third composer in the group was now Elton Dean). On a trip to Bordeaux with Centipede he got friendly with exuberant tenor sax player Gary Windo and out of this was born a band: Gary, Robert, Steve Florence (guitar), Mongezi Feza (trumpet), Nick Evans (trombone and previously part of the SM septet), and Roy Babbington (bass, who would replace Hugh in the Softs in the not-too-distant future). Gary christened it Symbiosis. In fact, membership was never fixed, as the promo piece for the Portsmouth Poly gig confirms. Starting at Bedford College, part of London University, on 5th December, the combo played at irregular intervals, even recording a session for the BBC’s Top Gear on 11th January 1971. Now, on 12th February they were about to play Portsmouth Poly. And so was Quiet Sun. Off we toddled down the A3 with our random collection of gear, Charles’s humungous drum kit and my beautifully restored Fender Precision. We turned up. Set up. Think: boy, this stage is a bit small for Symbiosis. And play. By now, we have abandoned any thoughts of having vocals. I was having enough trouble standing up straight and playing bass without having to warble waywardly. So, it was 50 minutes or so of pure instrumentals. Seemed to go OK. Robert watched. Symbiosis took over and, after a brief withdrawal to the Students’ Union bar for ‘refreshment’, we go back and watch. Lovely stuff. Symbiosis finish. Crowd applauds (as do we). Robert thanks audience and announces there is some spare time. OK then, he suggests, why don’t the members of Quiet Sun get back on stage and we will jam together. Cue stunned silence from us (Charles may have screamed. He was like that back then), if not from the audience who seemed to think it a passable idea. As our gear is still on stage we slink on at the back, turn on, tune in and bugger about. I can remember very little except it was great fun. Robert’s recollection is somewhat more detailed (as you will see in the very sadly late Mike King’s Wrong Movements, whose copyright I do not wish to infringe too much, so go and find/buy a copy and read it for yourselves, you lazy buggers). Broadly speaking, Robert laid down a solid, soul beat and the rest of us looned about. Fabulous. And, for me, rather useful, even if I did not know it at the time." BMac

    Thanks a lot for having me on your series, Dennis. It was great speaking with you. Also, as a quick correction: I hadn't thought much about my early concerts in relation to my time at boarding school, but I did actually see quite a few great concerts during my four years there (some in and around Philly, which was local to the school, and others back home in NYC as well). My first big one was Queen with Thin Lizzy opening, at Madison Square Garden, in February of 1977 (in awesome 16th-row center seats on the floor as well). A few other notable concerts from that time period include Kansas, Heart, Styx, Sweet, Boston, and Rush. Best wishes and, again, much appreciated!

    Yes, this is a great interview but I was going to say the same thing. Those interjections are great for a real conversation, showing an interest, etc., but on a Zoom call, it causes the other side to drop out, so it breaks up the response. With someone like Bill, he doesn't need 'encouraging', just let him go!

    Robin Crutchfield here. Interesting to hear others' memories of the art and music scenes of the 70s. As I'm compiling my own memoir, there are many details with which I adamantly disagree on the early years of the No Wave and downtown scene. But it's fun to compare fading memories.

    Great interview with Steve. You are becoming a Larry King with these various remarkable talents you are interviewing.The musical history that came thru Maxwells could fill a museum. I do encourage to Steve to do a book as a self published tribute. When you are part of cultural history memoirs are important. The ghost mentions, the odd shaped doors were an added bonus in Steve's Maxwells tales. How Netflix does not look to do a series of thoses amazing venues in NJ and NYC is a mystery. So in the meantime your podcasts are allowing many to do just that. Keep going Dennis.

    The last bit of the discussion is called the law of reciprocity. Notice how many blue cars begin to appear after you purchased a blue car. We have the ability to change our reality as artists. When another enters into our creative offering, they are in an actual different space, as the air pressure has changed. Sound needs air to move thru, so in a cool way our music is sculpting air molecules. Stephan has so many interests, this is evident you are bringing this out in your interview.

    Great interview Dennis with Stephan Buckley. You leave superb space for your guest to share great stories. Well timed question about AI. AI can only regurgitate what it has ingested, it cannot create unless its prompted. A human can look at a cricket then sample it, then grain stretch it and incredibly you have a ghostly eherial choir. AI is not curious, we are. Keep these wonderful artists coming.
