I said in one of my first videos here that I prefer not to compare them because I know they are two completely different political environments and they both have different histories that influenced the way things are today and it is not exactly the best mindset to have when traveling to a new country because it influences your perspective and stops you from seeing a country for what it is. With that being said there are also a few people who asked me to compare the two countries maybe because they are considering to move from one to the other or maybe they have never been here before. Once I’ve spent a bit more time here I plan to do a more in depth comparison because I think it is quite an interesting topic that I think hasn’t been covered that much 🙏🏻

I remember one tiktoker travel around vietnam and make video at first seem likes a dark humor but keep going and going seem likes he bash the whole nation with bad narrative and misleading all around people mad and even the government news label him on it

Even Vietnam has been at war for 30 years, still catching up with many countries and overtaking many others.

​ @Jarod_Abroad The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that we changed the governance from communist (each month, a person will get x kg of rice, y kg of meat, etc.) to a more divested economy. We called it a socialist-oriented market economy, "a multi-sectoral market economy where the state sector plays the decisive role in directing economic development, with the eventual long-term goal of developing socialism". Because of that, more countries have invested in Vietnam through FDI (direct government investment), mainly from Japan, the EU, the US, etc. They give us the money; we create jobs and land for their development, companies, and industries. The best example of that is from Korea and Samsung. Samsung has been in Vietnam for decades, and it is one of the largest exporters in Vietnam. Also, with the political view of taking no one side, Vietnam has and still can play with both and most of the most significant economic powers (the US, China, Russia, etc.); therefore, we can all benefit from all sides of the globe. Many videos on YT explain why the rise of the VN economy is so drastic.

Yes I have to agree things do get misrepresented allot in the west, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived here. It also makes me reconsider what I understand about what life is like in China. Also thank you very much for your insight, I will pin this comment for the viewers who would like a more in depth explanation of the political environment here in Vietnam! 🙏🏻

@@Jarod_Abroad I usually spend 5-6 days in Saigon at a time but that's usually in district 1, i know from your videos that you prefer the lesser known area's but i like to spend time in the cafe's and restaurants there, there are a couple of rock bars that i like to spend time in at night, i also found a really good rock bar in District 3 called Bai Dap Pub { if you're into that type of thing} there are usually 3-4 different performers per night, there's a really good atmosphere there, if you are travelling outside of Saigon then i would recommend Da Nang, Hoi An is really beautiful, Ninh Binh is also really beautiful, Phong Nha Ke Bang has some really beautiful countryside and caves to explore, i have also really enjoyed trekking in Sapa in Northern Vietnam

I actually do want to go to China some time, I was under the impression that Vietnam is also a communist country? Thank you, but why should I be careful about what I say, I was just asking about what the situation is?

@@Jarod_AbroadI have been visiting Vietnam since 1997 and ever since they adapted the capitalist economic view, they have been prospering so fast!!

They are no longer communist in their economic view but capitalist so they are no longer practicing the true communist ideology that they fought before 1975. True communist ideology is great in theory but never in practice. There is no individual ownership, everyone shares in the wealth; hence, if one person works and another person chooses not to, the working person will have to share their wealth with the person not working. That’s why country that practices true communism doesn’t survive. They either have to change in practice (like Vietnam and even China where individual ownership is allowed to prosper so that people have incentive to work hard to make a living and bring the national economy up) OR be like a true communist country like Cuba (look up videos from Cuba) where bc everything is “shared” they pass out ration coupon. Each family member gets a coupon for everything. If you want a chicken, you have to wait in line to buy chicken with your coupon. There is a line for everything controlled by coupon passed out by the government. There is no incentive to work hard bc the guy next to you will get the same ration that you have whether or not he works. Have you ever seen any government agency that is truly well run? No because businesses are own by individuals who wants to retain customers so their standards have to be higher to retain customers or the customers will go to the next business. Government agencies have no one that truly monitors them and they don’t care to make a profit to survive or prosper so standards and everything is low. Therefore, true govt run communist countries like Cuba have a very poor economy vs the communist countries that have abandoned the practicing of true communism but actually practice capitalism or a hybrid version of capitalism is surviving or thriving (like Vietnam).

If you look around you in Vietnam, all these people are opening their front doors and offering their merchandise or services to you…that’s capitalism…not communism. True communism what you own belongs to the govt or the whole community. When the communist took over Vietnam in 1975, all individual homeowners were force to open their homes for anyone to move in and live. So many people had squatters come in and live with the homeowners. What was crazier is that it happened to my aunt. She finally sold her house a few years back but the squatter became part owner when they squat in 1975. My aunt even tried to buy the squatter’s portion of the house back but the squatter ended up selling his portion to someone else so my aunt had to cut her house up all around the squatter in order to sell. That’s what communism in practice looks like. Not very realistic to have no land rights, no ownership. The reason why my aunt was allowed to sell is that from 1975 until present day, they had changed from communism to capitalism so she was allowed to continue having ownership to her house. Your friend’s view that “since communist party came into power things got better.” That’s rather a broad generalization without any analysis. After any war, things will be better than during a war. However, the growth that you see now is not a true practice in communism… it’s capitalism. Look up definition of both for reference. I hope this helps :-)

​@@Jarod_Abroad ​things have been better recently, especially after the pandemic, tbh - when the ppl knew what the government tried to do to get the vaccines, the treatment, and minimising the spread. I plan to return to VN as part of my study, and the terrorism and political risks are low compared to moderate risks for Thailand (per UK risk assessment regulation). So yeah, living in Vietnam is more peaceful, not like the UK peaceful = shops close at 5, but rather the political status. Moreover, as you discovered, each district will have its own "theme" "vibe". If you are a foreigner who wants to live/ retire in Vietnam, district 2 - Thao Dien area - in Sai Gon is arguably the best place; most of the shops, F&B services, hospitals, etc. will have to know how to communicate in English because it is considered an expat area. I'm happy to see the video explaining the city, the country and the confusion that people might get when they come to Vietnam, but love to help :)

So do Vietnamese favour this party? This video is me starting the discussion about how the new regulations will affect us and the fact that you say that the rules never end up working out is exactly what I mean by the fact that it is unclear what the future holds. You say it is misinformation then go on to confirm exactly what I was talking about in the video. Either way this is just a discussion not me giving you advice on how to navigate the ever changing immigration system in Thailand. Even though things are a bit uncertain I do still love Thailand and I understand that they need to adapt to the amount of foreigners they are dealing with as this isn’t any small task, I think they are doing quite a good job actually

Turn the camera slowly so we can see properly too please Food and culture And refrain from using bad words (such as drugs and gun etc) as hashtags or info about videos because UA-cam will not place those videos in it's Algoritm And refrain from insulting people and or religion etc and don't speak about matters you know nothing about (like this one english guy who blamed islam in India for inda having * women only Carriagges in trains etc and not the rampant abuse rape and groping problem in indian culture

Yeah, It’s a bit unfortunate but it’s not that everyone is like that, there will always be people like that in places where there are many tourists 🙌🏻

I wish I could say it wasn’t true but in places like Phuket it is just so obvious, I can’t really say the same for Bangkok, people there are also super friendly and still one of my favourite cities in the world it’s mainly just south side that they view foreigners as ATMs to be fair they also over charge domestic tourists not just foreigners

Okay, I will keep that in mind, maybe in the future I could do a more comprehensive comparison between being an expat in Thailand to being an expat in Vietnam 😁🙏🏻

@@Jarod_Abroad Great to hear your response. I think the ones I mentioned are different because they are near Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral and Ho Chi Minh City Hall. Therefore, the prices of beverages there are pretty higher than average but the views and vibes are unique😄.
