This is an awesome and comprehensive video. I respect Ishinomori a lot. Many of his works deal with similar themes and concepts, but they’re ones that really resonate with me, and the questions he asked and kept trying to answer in his work are ones I ask myself over and over again, as I think most people do. What does it mean to be human? When will the war end? Why do we always fear and discriminate against things we don’t understand? I think that’s why so much of his work can be appreciated even if a lot of it is similar. The questions are earnest and sincere, and ones we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives.

The dub for Black Lagoon isn’t bad, but I really wish they’d at least found someone that could do a decent Russian accent for Balalaika. In face it’s kind of weird that in a lot of American media (I’m looking at you MCU ) only Russian men can be recognized as Russian, but most women could pass for American unless you are told that they were Russian.

I had never heard of Black Lagoon until this video popped into my feed, but when I saw a section focusing on Revy, a part of my life instantly came back to me. My older brother (who is now married) wrote a story for us using characters from multiple mediums, and Revy was one of them. She was just as cool in his story as she is presented here, and I feel guilty having spoiled myself 3 minutes in and instantly stopped watching just to commend. Coming from a person who doesn't generally like/watch anime, Black Lagoon looks like an interesting series for sure, but my brother never directly recommended it, nor did he remember to tell me where Revy even came from.

Splendid work, Burg. It's been years since I've watched Black Lagoon, but watching these badass ladies kick ass and take names was great. However, in the back of my mind, I felt bad that they never got the chance to have peaceful lives, as they were screwed over by forces outside their control, and fought tooth and nail to get that control of their lives back. Now learning the historical context, I feel worse for them, as they were molded into what they became by a cruel world that showed them nothing but pain, loss, and aggression.
