He was a joyful guy with love for life until he was sent to prison during war and got severe Malaria. The illness turned him inward. After being released he became aimless, he seemed to have lost focus of his life, he had acute personality changes. Now, Malaria mental consequences are acute anxiety attacks, acute confusion states, acute personality changes, delirium, moderate or severe depression, conduct disorder and psychosis among other things. If his personality changed dramatically, it's showing one symptom of the illness which is: acute personality changes mentioned above. If his illness was severe while in prison, plus the depression he might have experience for being shut out in the darkness for a year, I'm sure he might have had many of the Malaria mental consequences. If he suffered from delirium and psychosis he could have imagined hearing a voice in the ruins. It also says he had recurrent cases of Malaria through his life. Maybe his conduct disorder took him to the people with Leprosy getting infected himself within time. Leprosy also attacks the nerves. I'm sure he was a nice person who tried to help others, but I don't believe in his calling. I think it was all consequences of his lifetime illness. Joan of Arc is also now questioned if she really heard a voice or if she had schizophrenia.
