A common question I get is what I use to stamp my spines. Up until this point I have used a Zonepack ZS-90. While I have just upgraded to a Vintage Kingsley, this machine is still very useable for rebinding bibles. I liked your video, and it does a good job of giving information to help a Customer understand leather differences. I think you are incorrect about paste down being an inferior product. If you look at books from the middle ages, many of them leather bound, they are all pasted down. They used simple wheat paste and animal glues that lasted many lifetimes. While glues did give way after centuries of use, most failures were at seams, edges and spines due to use. Modern glue is better for various reasons. There is no denying that a sewn edge will last a long time and is stylish. But a properly constructed paste down can last past the life of the leather or other binding materials. Not everyone wants a Bible that looks like a saddle, with the edge seaming. That Customer should not worry that a pasted Bible is inferior.

    You haven't been foil stamping long. Did you buy Zonepak new? What don't you like that you would trade for a Kingsley so soon?

      Thank you for the comment! I bought the Zonepak new, but it was on sale when I got it. I think it was $30 off. The Zonepak is a solid machine. My biggest peeve with the Zonepak is that you have to level it (it also gets unlevel) so I was spending a lot of wasted time trying to adjust the heating plate angle to be parallel to the base. A minor gripe is that you have to wait for it to cool some before changing stamps, with a Kingsley you have a removeable type holder with an insulated handle. There are some other minor reasons, I will explain in a future video! The Kingsley is not a perfect machine, it won't magically make you a pro at stamping haha.

    I'd love to see a stitching demo. I'll begin with hand stitching before commiting to a machine purchase. You stiching is spot on.

      I will definitely do one at some point! In the mean time I use this method, the first one "Modern" not the "Traditional" Method. With the Modern method one side of your stitch will be straight and the other zig zag. The first needle I always insert on my liner side so that the front of my project has the straight stitch. The thread I use is in my Materials List Document. ua-cam.com/video/FxZsHLmZhyk/v-deo.html

      Thank you! No I hand stitch. If you use a 3mm stitching chisel the stitches end up looking very neat and not the typical "hand stitched" look. Yes! I made a google document for recommended materials. I will include it in the description.

      Hey man, good question. I've been using .8mm thick cover leather for my last 10+ rebinds. My liners leather is about the same thickness but it varies between .8mm and 1mm. The liner sheepskin is much softer than the cover stuff and than this smooth cell pig.

    Hi Ethan, thank you for your channel and sharing all your knowledge! And great work on your bibles! My comment following is for anyone wanting to start rebinding but is scared off by needing premium leather to start. I’m from South Africa and have slowly begun to start a rebinding service however I can’t get premium leather here. Or at least I struggle. I buy nappa leather from a supplier as the liner since it’s less than 1mm thick. And for the outside I use scraps from a company that rebinds couches (similar to you). It’s always chrome tanned leather and a bit thicker than what I see others use, but it’s definitely still usable and can give you a factory looking finish. It just takes some elbow grease skiving down the edges and finding the ‘right‘ upholstery leather. Thank you again!

      @ExFideBiblesandStationery 22 дні тому

      You're welcome! Thanks for the comment. Yes, chrome tanned upholstery leather will work. It's not as ideal as vegetable tanned. I wish you the best in your practice. Let me know if you need any tips 👍

    Hello, Ethan. I have also watched Drew’s Rebinds. You have said, as he has said, that adding an extra 3/16 inches to the Bible cover length is important. Have you noticed that you actually do end up using that extra length?

    • @ExFideBiblesandStationery
      @ExFideBiblesandStationery Місяць тому

      Hello, I add 3/16 to my long measurement and that seems to work well for liner thicknesses of .8 - 1mm. You definitely "use" that extra length. That length is needed because your liner tabs are folded under your cover and if you don't account for that your cover will not be wide enough.

    Would a goatskin cover last as long as a cowhide? Which is more durable?

    • @ExFideBiblesandStationery
      @ExFideBiblesandStationery 2 місяці тому

      Both would last a lifetime if maintained well. Goatskin has a longer pristine appearance. The surface of goatskin is more resistant to scratching than an Oil Tan Cowhide like I use. Goatskin is also more resistant to oils from handling. Not overly so though. Cowhide is a great material to get a bible rebound in!

      They're looking good for under 20 total rebinds I'd say. I haven't struggled too much with corners past maybe rebind #11. The trick is consistent skiving and using a small radius, one closer to factory bibles. I will be sure to feature those in my next update, they're not convenient to get in frame with my high filming angle.
