2009 Volvo C70 T5 M66: C-Pillar corner flap repair (convertible top cable)
After several month driving with c-pillar flap that would not close, I finally got up the nerve to attempt a repair. Turned out to not be so bad compared to other repairs, just had to be patient and pay attention to cord routing around roof arm mechanisms.Replacement part info: Convertible Top Cable (Left, Rear), p/n 31256464

After several attempts bleeding brake lines to get rid of soft brakes, I finally tried testing brake vacuum lines. The first test is a simple brake booster check, where you press the pedal until it becomes firm then turn over the engine to release pressure on the brake and the pedal drops. The second test was to check vacuum pump capacity, which showed no vacuum. The third test is to check the ...

Nice - keep the videos coming - i have to start finding my roof problem in spring :)
I'm proud you still have your turbo heat shield. I put Elevate's blanket and downpipe wrap on my 2007 C70. You are a hero!
On my list ...
Keep an eye on that pair of hoses that runs on the firewall to the heater core. Those Ford quick disconnects will leak sometime.
True. If/when that happens, prob just go with the hose barbs
I got all of those mounts from FCP Euro. I did the transmission torque mounts already. I need to do the the other time but there are two many cars in my stable.
Some of the lovely engineering on our lovely P1 C70s. Love/Hate relationship at its best.
Putting it mildly 🤣
3:25 Ugh. So, what do you do when you can't get the bolts off? I sprayed it off with the thread releaser oil, got the 5mm hex on my ratchet, and grabbed the nut with my spanner, but All that happened was that the hex head stripped out. Am I going to have to angle grind this thing off now?
Brother, I feel you. You saw how close I came to having to cut it off. I don't have any good advice other than stay in your comfort zone and if in doubt take it to a mechanic.
Dux96 thank you for all these videos and your narrative. Couple questions for you / anyone reading this, I just bought a 2011 Volvo C70 T5 with 44,000 miles on it. Question 1, the roof headliner on the drivers side sits 2" below where it should be seems it is not being pulled up when the roof is closed, any thoughts on fixing this? Question 2, how reliable are the convertible roofs on these cars, should I worry / keep / change the car for a different convertible? Any feedback useful, thanks, Simon
Headlining or side flap? Headlining may be clips' adhesive failing. Easy fix. Flap may need cord and/or clip repair, a little more complicated but doable. Either way, check swedespeed for more info. As for the second question...depends on your risk tolerance 🤣
@@Dux96 Driver side of the car only the side flap is not being pulled up. Ill take a look with a flashlight today to see if the clips adhesive has failed or a rope issue. Re my 2nd question my risk tolerance is linked to cost to fix which for the whole headliner looks to be $4k at a specialist.
Checking the car this morning I found 2 of the 4 clips at the front of the rear headliner are not connected to the headliner causing it to sit 2" below the roof. On these two there are clips on the inside of the headliner but bare holes on the metal roof. All other parts inc ropes look in very good condition. What is your reccomendation to reattached the headliner to the roof? With many many thanks S.
@@shawchicago Sounds like you lost the clip halves that attach to the metal roof. Could be worse. Order new clips and reinstall. Make sure adhesive between clip and headliner, making sure adhesive covers clip edges. Allow enough time to cure and pop headliner back in place. In your case, if the clip halves attached to the headliner are still secure, take the new clip halves that insert in the metal roof to your headliner clip halves, then pop it back in. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@Dux96 Thanks this helps a lot. The two female retainer clip halves are still attached and secured to the inside of headliner. But, there is nothing in the metal roof above them just an empty hole. Reading your answer if I buy 2 of the male parts of the clip I can reattach the headliner to the roof correct? Any idea why they may have broken in the first place? Its not the adhesive causing the break. S
hi mine is only opening halfway it then stops. im getting fault code for hall sensor 3 . was yours opening halfway too then only closing ? or was yours not doing anything ??
Most common symptom with bad HS#3 is yellow trunk compartment button won't work. HS#3 shouldn't affect roof opening, at least not immediately. I had the fault for over a year but the trunk lid started not closing after roof was folded into the trunk, so it was time to do something about it. If you're not getting any other other CRM codes to chase, try lubricating seals and joints. But need codes to figure out if it's roof pump or CRM, and probably needs calibration.
Sry I have same probl my passenger site working but driver site don't work... Roof also doesn't work?
I don't understand the question?
Thank you
Did you ever make a video of the replacement process? My headliner just came unattached today
use plastic bonder between the clips and the lining of the car. I did this myself and it turned out great! Just make sure to use gloves. There is a video that is helpful for it on youtube!
@@noahmcgrath9776 jeez I couldnt find the video when I searched. Do you mind linking it?
Last time I opened my roof on my 2006 C70 it made a loud clack sound about 3/4 of the way to opening. When I went to return the roof it got about 1/4 of the way and stopped. The truck was in a vertical position and it just wouldn't go anywhere. After an hour of internet searching and trying to figure out a strategy to manually adjust the roof, I tried the button one more time and it retracted fully. I haven't opened the roof in about a year now, scared it will malfunction. The roof is quite noisy when going over bumps etc. always has been and seemingly random spots as well.
Check usual suspects: lock brace may be broken, clean and lube roof seals and arms, and try to get access to Vida to scan for codes, especially for hall sensors. But the clack sound may have been a lock brace letting go and you need a replacement. Definitely find someone with Vida and run a scan.
Great to see another upload, as an owner of the same car (2006) it's always good seeing what issues I likely have coming :D
It's a great car, but it sure is heavy. Even when you do all the standard bolt on upgrades, it's still feels like a lot of car to get moving at around 3600 lbs.
No doubt! But cool thing about the day was talking with all the other drivers. Some experienced, some new, some cars modified specific for track, some not (like mine). Cool thing was everyone's attitude was track the car you have and work with those limits. Big thing the day proved to me was how tires trump almost any bolt on upgrade and focus work over the winter on suspension.
I have one of these, sounds a bit complicated to be honest, all I did was to let go of the drop roof button at the same point and it stopped going down !
Any option to adjust the 2 roof sections which join above the driver's head? Mine is noisy in that area every time I go over small bumps in the asphalt.
With Vida you can check alignment and recalibrate to make sure the roof is seating properly. Need to verify none of your hall sensors are bad and that joints are lubricated. Not sure if there's a way to recalibrate without the software
Thank you for your feedback @@Dux96 .
I noticed that you removed the roof upholstery and I was wondering if you have any tips for eliminating the noise from the joints.
Seller removed headliner and I don't think there's much to do about reducing noise from joints other than lubricating them. Once roof is locked in there's not much to do about dampening vibrations without the headliner
@@Dux96 is there any lock adjustment mechanism? Can you please make a foto of the systems under the roof?
@@deniscaciula2682 @TopHydraulics has a nice videos series on C70 convertible roofs
I just had mine fixed. A fella on winter park Florida got mine back to factory. Business is called "headliner express" I highly recommend him.
Just curious, is everything still working well?
Hi
I literally just did the same thing yesterday 😂 just cut it off myself
The headliner is the worst and most trouble prone part of the otherwise excellent hardtop convertible system. From the weak adhesive the inevitably fails right to the plastic tabs on the wings that will inevitably crack. It's not stock, but I really think mechanically fastening the headliner is the best long term decision. I've heard of people using riv-nuts and just sheet metal screws.
I made this soon after buying the C70 and I still haven't installed new headlining because I've been working on other mods. I have a better understanding of how it works now (sorta) and I have VIDA to set service position. I'm debating re-installing the clips or actually fastening it. Also considering adhering insulation sheets before I do for heat and accoustics. Once I get there, I plan on making a video how I did it (and the likely mistakes I'll make) since there's not much on YT how to do it.
So happy in the UK the horrendous cabin filter is accessible without removing pedals! I think whichever engineer designed that location for the filter deserves a good and proper kicking.
I've since installed rear sway bar, turbo intake, engine mounts, etc. This remains the most frustrating maintenance/repair experience I've had. Except maybe a TCV upgrade. Maybe. It's a cabin filter for crying out loud.
@@Dux96 Easy to see why so many people/garages just don't bother to change it. I had a 2013 S60 D5 R-Design, filter in the same location. The smell that came out on a hot summer's day was horrendous, it was the filter that had somehow got wet before my ownership and absolutely stunk! The effort to remove was worth it to get rid of that smell!
Really interesting to see the bare bones of it, the 2 interior flaps above driver/passenger side head don't pull in fully when the roof is up, so well worth seeing which bits. are potentially responsible for not doing their job.
Just bought one of these so thank you for showing the roof 'innards', interesting to see things with headlining off before I even consider looking to replace/repair elements on mine. Thanks!
If you're planning doing a lot of work yourself, consider getting VIDA. It's makes a world of difference figuring things out.
@@Dux96 Thanks, I've got Vida - just need to re-create my virtual machine to run the diagnostic software as my old laptop broke :D
Good afternoon! Could you share the name of the software to download on the laptop? Or can you do all that with the scanner? Or did you do it that way because you didn't have a scanner?
@@jordanmanzanares5188 Google VIDA+DICE
Cool to see the mechanism. Hope the headliner on my 08 holds up! With that many miles worth putting some time into that one.
Same here. I look back at this video and cringe a little every time I hear myself call it a headliner. It's been a learning curve.
is there anything you need to add to the clips to make it stick? Does the new clips come with the glue already?
Haven't made the repair yet because weather hasn't been cooperating. Clips don't come with adhesive. Volvo recommends Wurth Fix All 2-Part Adhesive. See Volvo tech bulletin for repair procedure at static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10157914-9999.pdf
