How to Make the Best Design Boards for Quilting
Thank you for this video!!!! As a suggestion if you want to use the wool mat maybe you could put a wood backing on it so you can used everywhere and not to worry for ruining the surface you use... Maybe... It's just an idea 😅
I just ordered the pattern, you gave me the confidence I needed to make it. Wish me luck !
All great information. Table leg extensions are genius!
What is the final measurement of the very first block that you did???
A less expensive option than a rotating mat is to just buy a small mat that you can turn on your larger mat. I have one that also doubles as my travel cutting mat.
my first thought was to put the board under the wool mat, best of all worlds, and faster
Steve at Sewing Gold now has engraved OEM plates that fit perfectly. Love mine--zero regrets. I sewed some polar fleece with it this week. Might try finish quilting next-simple squares or stitch in the ditch. I will use my vintage Singer 201 or Kenmore 158-17600 for piecing, the Juki isn't great with light fabrics.
Very helpful info.!! I used to use a lot of fusible products for basting and now steer away from it when I can because it causes the sewing needle to get gunky with adhesives. That causes all sorts of trouble until I replace the needle. I now rely more on good pressing and clips or pins to hold things in place. TFS
This was great. I've done one 9 patch. It's fun❤
I completely understand your reasons for making your own portable pressing pad. I have a wool ironing pad and it has worked well for me. I've been researching pressing pads to see if it's something that would solve my problem. I put a waffle shelf liner (the one with holes) underneath it so that there's some air movement. I've not had any problem with moisture or mold which was a big concern of mine. By the way, I do like your pressing pad and the change to use muslin.
Hi, can you help me with a measurement please. Want to do the disappearing 4 patch to make a twin bed quilt. What size block would you recommend. I think the 5 inch would not work for me. Hope this ? Makes sense. Many thanks.
I have my wool mat on a wooden board then wrapped that in fabric. Works great.
What about cutting your wool mat to fit the wood and then covering it with the muslin fabric?
This is a fabulous presentation. Thank you!
Супер!
Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge. I have been watching several of these videos on the 9 patch, and I am so amazed at all the ways you can make it. I had never seen the one with the block in the middle being the same as the other 4 blocks, making 5 squares the same, and then the left over 4 being a great lighter color that went so well. I think it was beautiful. I am going to try my luck at it. Any ideas how many squares and what size square are needed to make a lap size quilt?
This is a great video. Everything is so well presented, clear and easy to follow.
Informative review, Nice work. Thanks
Thank you.
I’m thinking about an industrial machine, but for now, my bernina 1008 will do. It can sew through 8-10 layers of cotton fine… unlikely to go through vinyl….
This was a great tutorial. I was just wondering if there was a reason you couldn't reuse the Insul-brite and batting (everything but the colored cloth cover) on the smaller pressing pad. Were you just wanting to start fresh?
Basically a good tutorial. That said, the blade up so much of the time, when not in use, made me nervous.
Thank you my first attempted was a huge mess you solved all the problems 🎉
Thanks.
❤❤❤ I was looking for a pattern to use the 176 HSTs I made on a rainy day with no plan in mind!!! THANK YOU!!!😊
I really liked your channel, I am working on a nine block disappearing nine block now, I did my block with nine different colors, gonna try to do the cutting tomorrow to see what I can come up with. Will post it when I finish a block. You have been very helpful and explained every step in making the block. Thank you so much.
Nice yours bag
Thank you
Thank you for the informative and clearly explained tutorial. Now I understand it’s not an iron on transfer of the lines- but rather the shiny side acts like a temporary (not sticky) adhesive to hold the paper to the fabric so it does not move around while cutting. 🌺
Thank you! Great video, I learned a lot!
I put a dumbbell weight on my ruler, and it really helps
dont use a fabric with color . do not use a surface without holes for the heat to escape.
love my wod mats❤
can't do this as a annnies pattern is infront and back 2 pieces yours 😢is in all in 1 piece
what is "core board??
It is foam board. You can find it at Dollar Tree or Walmart.
@@proud2bktsmama Thank you. I'll check it out. Your instructions are clear and that was my only hitch. 😃
lovely to see the variations have done lots of 9 patch but will now have a go at 4 blocks. Also have done quilts using double disappearing 9 patch blocks
Love all the variables!❤
Thank you for sharing.
How can you calculate the finish size on the diagonally cut blocks.
I love the large blue hanging light that you have. Where did you buy it? I have the small light that attaches to the machine by magnet on my 1181 (I also have a smaller Ottlite), but I need another larger light like the one that you have. 😀 Thanks for the video.
Beautiful
Hello, I’m a beginner and just finished a disappearing 9 patch quilt. I did the simple pattern where you rotate the squares 180 degrees. I also tried to do diagonal cuts after. Urticaria f the Ay h horizontally and vertical. The first block turned out ok but when I tried to do the second block I kept getting lost as to where to show the triangles. I also learned that the more seams the smaller your block gets 🤪🤦🏻♀️😂. So you have to commit to using the same pattern or ones that will end up close to the same size. I wanted to do different pattern blocks but I would have had to figure out how to make them all work together. Don’t have the knowledge or want to spend the time to do so. But one thing that I enjoyed doing with this quilt top is being able to chain piece. Eventually the quilt top turned out ok. Now I have to put a border and finish it. Having a blast 💥.
I really like the star center I've made several very showy table-top, square runners with that one. It goes together quickly and it's a great gift, especially when you know a person's color schemes in their home. I would LUV to share some pictures with you. How do I do that?
I get value from your comparing the two types of ironing surfaces. When it start looking bad you could watch Professor Pincusion’s and just make a washable cover for it. So you would not need to take the staple out and keep it looking once.
I don’t want to grow up to be a quilter! Even though I’ve made three and have pans for three more. I’d rather sew garments.
My firs time creating a disappearing 9square. I’m a beginner and wanted to do this since I started yin September 23. Thank you for your suggestion. Awesome!
The best video I've seen on this 4 and 9 patch. Thank you.
Where do you buy your thread?
You said the walking foot was kind of in the way when you were sewing the gusset on, can the walking foot be taken off while you are sewing the gusset on?
Thank you! You just solved various problems I have been working on for a week. I live in Arizona in a very small house, no room inside for a permanent cutting table and now that it has hit 105 degrees and will soon be 115 and above I started looking for something portable. Since I am 67 and tall and have no business trying to cut on the floor, I knew I needed something light weight like a folding table but they were all at eating height not standing height. I gave up for a few days dejected, now I have my answers and it is so simple. Thanks to you I won't have to stop learning to sew over the summer.❤
Insulate and those types of products actually reflect the heat back to the source it came from . It doesn’t “keep it out”, it bounces it back instead of letting it seep through
