    Really enjoyed that series! The only thing missing is the sound of the water. Would be nice to hear the original background noise next time. Looks great place!! My 10 yr old had his first paddling lesson up front in a tandem yesterday in my old local estuary back home in Christchurch and he loved it and can't wait to go again. I took him out in my lap on the river as a sprog but that doesn't really count 😆😆

    • @travelswithpaddles
      @travelswithpaddles Місяць тому

      Awesome, all the best to your 10 yr old starting out in their life adventure that is paddling. I've thought about the background sound before. The issue I have, is that I seal my gopros in a waterproof case, so the sound pickup is very muffled and sounds rubbish. There is also often the sound of clicks and clacks as the camera moves a bit in the case, or even if the case gets hit by a droplet of water. So, in the end I've always decided to edit the audio out completely.

      Hi, great to hear that you're interested in starting up paddling. Joining a club is a really good choice to get you started in the sport. In terms of local clubs, I would have said Arun Canoe Club. But, searching the net, I can't find any club pages that have been active for years. Your next closest is probably Chichester CC or Hunston CC or Portsmouth CC. Check out this site for more clubs www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/canoe-near-you. In terms or buying a boat, joining the club first is your best bet. They should have boats you can borrow, to see how you like them. This will then guide your decision. All the best.

    Yep, adding that one to the list looks stunning. Have you done the Afon Teifi in Wales? Four of us did it this June, it was fantastic. Water levels were historically low so there were a fair few places where we had to walk our kayaks through the shallows, that and being the hottest week of the year slowed our progress but with doing half days we managed 75km in 6 days. Could have done more but two of us weren’t up for the distances needed as only did two or three kayak trips before that. I got a really useful book ‘The Welsh Rivers’ 2nd edition, which gives the sections as there are only a few easily accessible put ins and places to get out. Recommend a car at both the beginning and end of each section. Flows all the way out to cardigan bay. We were based at Cenarth where Cenarth falls are but I wouldn’t recommend trying shooting those. I think there was only two, maybe three places I portaged round but then I’m a bit scared of water. Any good day trips you could recommend in the south east? Done the Arun, Adur as well as the basingstock and wey canals, and the river wey which is good fun. Also, we have open, inflatable kayaks so nothing too likely to fill the boats. According to the book we got up to level two rapids BUT with low water levels

      The Verdon is a truly stunning place to paddle. Really recommend it. Afon Teifi sounds good and no I haven't paddled it yet, thanks for the recommendation. I've been on a few of the Welsh rivers such as the Usk, Tywi (Towy) and Cothi. In terms of something in the South East, I can highly recommend the Medway Canoe Trail from Tonbridge down to Allington (and right down to the sea if you wish). Really nice river with some really fun slides at the weirs. Check out ua-cam.com/video/MYRrexsy6eI/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/x3vlmCP3mdo/v-deo.html for more info. Just be careful of the slide at Sluice Weir Lock (interesting name) it is significantly steeper that the others and is made of concrete without the guide brushes that the other slides have. If your inflatable has a fixed skeg, the roughness of the concrete won't do it any good. It may be worth portaging that one.

    I did this one with a friend from Littlehampton to Pullborough about 21/22 miles in June. Great paddle, 6 hour trip. Also, on a different trip, pullborough up following tide until it starts working against you and returning back to pullborough was one of my all time favourite trips. Best wildlife experience I’ve had in this country. Peregrine falcons, marsh harriers, and a juvenile sparrow hawk taking a dragonfly out the air 15 foot above our heads. As well as many large birds of prey I couldn’t identify, definitely not buzzards or kites. Just amazing.

      Great stuff. Yes there is a good variety of wildlife in this area. Up from Pulborough is a great paddle too. I should have a video of it somewhere on the channel.

    A couple of friends and I did Leatherhead to cobham mill yesterday, 6/8/2023. Didn’t need to portage at all, no problems after fetcham like you had but a few tight bits through tree branches. The weir, at 5:45 in the video, is now completely blocked on the right hand side so we had to shoot the left.

      Ah Ace, thanks for the update. I'm glad that most of the trees have been cleared. Good to know about the weir too.

      @@travelswithpaddles it was a beautiful day for a quick paddle. The tree at 8:12 in the video before the water wheel at Painshill is no longer there. We are heading all the way to the Thames on our next trip so hopefully, as with fetcham to Painshill, the river will be clearer for us. Fingers crossed.
