KTXL NewsPlus Sales Presentation -- Pete Wilson (circa 1981)

This short presentation was shown to advertisers to drum up ad sales for Newsplus, which debuted on August 6, 1979. You can watch the full broadcast here: ua-cam.com/video/ePrLtx2Z5kQ/v-deo.html This sales presentation was edited on 3/4" tape, and as a result it looks a bit cruddy, with lots of ringing. KTXL "You're First With 40" promo (circa 1983) - from the master tape
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
I'm a little vague on the history of this one as my copy appears to be from the master 1-inch tape, but it doesn't look that great. In any event, I present it here for historical value. Following the promo I've included the full music bed with no announcer, sourced from the original 1/4-inch, full-track, reel-to-reel tape. Voiceover by Jerry Chambers.
KTXL 1985 Summer Film Festival promo - from the 1-inch master tape
Переглядів 598Рік тому
This ambitious promo, using lookalikes for Burt Reynolds, Woody Allen, and Elizabeth Taylor was shot on film (I believe by Randy Bond), then edited on 1-inch videotape by KTXL editor Stan Severance. Music is from the Polydor LP "Games of the XXI Olympiad - Montreal 1976" Side 2, Track 1 (Ballet "Hommage aux Athletes" Movement Rock). Voiceover by Jerry Chambers.

By the time this promo aired, there was no Family Ties, Miami Vice, and Highway to Heaven (on the topic of Highway to Heaven, this was the first season on NBC not to have any Michael Landon show since 1958-59 (a year before his first show Bonanza first aired), and Seinfeld just aired it's pilot (it didn't have Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her Elaine character until additional 4 episodes (The Pilot and the additional 4 episodes made up Season 1) later in July 1990, right after the 1989-90 season ended and before the 1990-91 season even started. This was the final season for The Hogan Family (it moved to CBS in 1990-91), 227, The Wonderful World of Disney (it's second stint, it's first stint on NBC was 1962-1981), My Two Dads (even though one of the stars Paul Reiser starred in a future NBC sitcom with Helen Hunt that ran from 1992-99 called Mad About You), and ALF (it's animated prequel series "ALF" and spinoff "ALF Tales" also ended this season). The 1989-90 season was also the debut of Wings, which is notable for being the first Cheers spinoff not produced by Glen and Les Charles, and James Burrows (Burrows directed an episode of Wings), but produced by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee. Also there were some changes in daytime, there was no Wheel of Fortune (it moved to CBS in 1989-90 but returned in 1991), No 2 Hip 4 TV, Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears (moved to ABC), Ed Grimley, The New Archies, Reruns of the Punky Brewster cartoons (the live-action sitcom which it based off ended on NBC in 1986 but continued in syndication in 1987-88), Sale of the Century, Super Password, and Win, Lose or Draw. They added reruns of 227 on Daytime, There were some new shows such as Saved by the Bell, a revival of Let's Make a Deal, a Nintendo-based series called Captain N: The Game Master (Nintendo and NBC still has a partnership through this day since NBC merged with Universal in 2004), John Candy's show Camp Candy, and an animated adaptation of Robert Mark Kamen's The Karate Kid, and this was the last seasons for Scrabble and The Smurfs.

I was a Freshman in high school in SSF heading home from football practice when i heard the part of the Bay Bridge collapsed, i knew this was the real deal Earthquake. Sad the see what unveiled in the days to come with out power for days and the people that suffered. San Francisco was a proud town of people back then that back each other back then.

Kinda insane to think about that this was the same agency/company that got purchased by Dreamworks later on only for it to go defunct in 2015. Really interesting that what was later on a division of Dreamworks used to make a whole lot of stuff for networks or any other type of brand in the 80s.

If analog tv looked as clear and as clean as this 24/7, and had any of the higher quality VHS branch offs been successful like they were supposed to (W-VHS, D-VHS, etc), we would never have needed digital tv.

You know, watching cool shit like this makes me long for a time I never lived in. I wish some kind of tv renaissance happened today and we could bring back this era of ota tv (1968-1981ish). The graphics, the slides, the news, the sounds, the music, the movies, the shows, the commercials, sign ons and sign offs, all of it. 😫

My brother, Peter McHugh, was creative director at DDB Needham and The Night Belongs to Michelob was his campaign. He said the night they filmed this, they were driving around LA in a van shooting hand-held out of the back of the van having a blast. He is credited as producer of the "After Midnight" spot and the full version on Clapton's Crossroads boxed four-CD set. My mom had called and said, "Pete wanted me to tell you he is working with Eric Carlton..." MOM - "Eric Clapton?!" Geez, Pete, where's your big sister? Bring me along! He called me from Joe Jackson's studio, sent a picture of him with Robert Cray. You have me reminiscing as Peter passed away in 2020. He sent me the session tape, too, with just a note, "I've seen god."

I was riding my skateboard down the street, a block from my house. I stopped and turned and watched the street asphalt ripple up towards me like a wave in the ocean. I ran to my mom standing under Spanish arches under our front porch. PG&E drove by on a loud speaker saying not to return into the house until our gas lines were checked, the radio came on and they said the bay bridge section collapsed. My dad had just gotten off the Cypress in Oakland to get a beer for the road home. We went two days later to see the Cypress Freeway and I remember the distinct smell of blood and fuel from the crushed freeway. That was a scary earthquake. Days later, I remember 101 being packed with station wagons of non-natives leaving the Bay Area permanently after the Loma Prieta Quake.

An SFPD undercover officer who lived off Broderick, put a full automatic gun to my head, but strategically stood within his home as he did. He was probably acting on instructions from Farah Diba Pahlavi to use a psychiatric tactic to try and scare and anger me. He was in the cordoned off zone after the fire broke out. He was proud of the fact that he had two front porch lights flanking his garage that were on by virtue of a generator.
