If your dog doesn't get sufficient, appropriate exercise on a regular basis you will likely run into behaviour problems. Walks where they are able to explore the outside world with their nose, walk at a natural pace for them without being held back, and investigate new natural environments, are all NECESSARY in a dogs world for mental stability. The same boring walks, seeing the same people/dogs, sniffing the same smells, continuously chasing the same toys, it's no wonder our wonderful, intelligent, active dogs are going stir crazy!!! Too many young, adolescent dogs don't get what they NEED. It's incredibly sad and very easily changeable. If you’re doing this with your dog, you need to stop! Lots of dog owners believe that if they take something away from their dog and give it back to them, they are showing that they always give things back and therefore their dog won’t learn to guard from them. HOWEVER, there is a HUGE problem with this…. You stole their thing in the first place! If you want to teach your dog not to guard from you and that you are trustworthy around their valuable treasure, do these two easy things: 1. Don’t steal their things! You don’t need to steal their things in order to teach them anything! 2. When your dog has something in their possession, place a treat next to them and walk away. Over time, this will teach your dog that you are the giver of awesome things and that your approach is brilliant! Therefore, your dog won’t be concerned about your hands approaching them, and they won’t feel the need to guard from you. DISCLAIMER: If your dog is already a resource guarder, seek professional help. DO NOT approach them, even with a treat. ✅ Seek help. Your reactive dog will have “triggers” for their reactive behaviour. These are most commonly people, dogs, children, and traffic - but they can be anything. 🐶 1. By walking towards one of your dogs triggers without giving your dog time to assess the situation and communicate if they’d like to go forward or to move away. Wanting to move away can look like: looking away, turning away, lip licking, yawning, and pretending to find interest in something in a different direction. 🐶 2. Body blocking is when your dog stands across your path in a horizontal position, eseentially blocking your path. This only happens briefly and requires your dog to be ahead of you for it to happen. This is why “heel” walking can often be counterproductive for working on reactive dog behaviour - a loose lead is fine, the heel position is unnecessary. 🐶 3. Exit cues are given when your dog is in a social situation and is trying to communicate that they’d like more space (or to leave entirely) these can look like: jumping up at you, pawing at you, keeping away from another dog/person, looking away to where they’d like to be and not engaging with people/dogs in that situation. Learn to take things a bit slower on your walks, let your d lead the way, mirror what they do, and give them options. ✅ Drop me a message on WhatsApp to get started on your dog's behaviour today! #dog #reactivedog #rescuedog #scareddog #dogowners #reactivedogowners #positivereinforcement #dogtrainer #dogtrainingtips #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #puppy #puppytraining #cockerpoo #cockapoo #dachshund #cockerspaniel #germanshepherd #sausagedog #nervousdog #anxiousdog #forcefree

Telling your dog off for growling won’t make them less likely to show aggression. 🤯 Growling and showing teeth are part of your dog's warning system. They are used when your dog wants something or someone to stop. Perhaps they feel uncomfortable or unhappy, or they growl when something is too much for them. This form of communication is designed to get you (or someone else) to stop doing whatever they are doing in that moment. ❌ By telling your dog “no” for growling or showing their teeth what you’re actually telling them is “no, do not warn me. Do not tell me that you are unhappy with what is happening”. 💥 Your dog will likely do as you say, they will stop warning you that they are unhappy or when something happens that they don’t like, and instead of warning you - because you don’t like having warnings. They will just skip straight to an air snap or a bite. 🐶 In order to stop your dog from growling, you need to identify what it is they do not like at that moment. Find where the problem is for your dog - not for you. Once you know the trigger for the growling, you can either teach an alternative for that moment or work on changing their association from the current negative one to a positive one. ✅ Drop me a message on WhatsApp to get started on your dog's behaviour today! #dogtrainer #dogbehaviour #reactivedog #aggressivedog #dogtrainertips #forcefree #rescuedog #viralreels #dogreels #viral #Terrier #dogowner

🐶 When you’re working on changing your dog’s behaviour or teaching your dog something new there will need to be an element of management in place to prevent your dog from practising the behaviour you are trying to change. 🐾 For example, if your dog is currently running off to see other dogs on their walks and won’t come back, you will need to use a form of management such as a long line while working on your recall training. 💥 Or suppose your dog barks out of the window, or in the garden. In that case, you will need to use a form of management such as closing the blinds or the back door. This is so they can’t practice barking at the sights and sounds in between the times that you have available to work on counterconditioning a different response. ❌ Failing to use correct management whilst your dog is learning a new response is the number one route to setting yourself up to get frustrated and setting them up to fail. ✅ Set yourself up for success, know what you are working towards, and prevent the practice of the behaviour you are trying to stop. 🐾 Spaniels are working breeds, and there are working lines within these working breeds, which extends to crossbreeds too such as cockerpoos and springadors. A strong genetic desire to run, can sometimes cause concern that the dog will run away, but that isn’t the aim for Spaniels. 🐾 Running around isn’t the same as running away, and the two shouldn’t be confused. Free time is extremely important for their mental health and wellbeing, and for the prevention of behaviour problems. 🐾 Running freely like Vinnie doesn;t mean the dog is out of control, Vinnie here has no issues with his recalls whatsoever, he just loves to run! #workingcockerspaniel #gundog #spaniel #spaniellove #dogtrainer #dogtraining #cockerspaniel #sprocker #springerspaniel #doglover #dog #dogs #cockerlovers #cockerpuppy #puppy #dogadvice #cockapoo #cockerpoo

3 Things Puppy Owners Should Never Forget 🐶 Your puppy is growing both physically and mentally until they are 3 years old, during this time they are gathering their experiences of the world, and developing an understanding of what they enjoy and what they do not. 🌟 Confidence building and putting your puppy’s needs first should always FAR outweigh training. Training can be taught at any age, to any dog, of any breed - it is just their understanding of what a word means. However, confidence can be knocked and broken easily which will change your puppy’s view of the world. Every puppy is an individual, focus on supporting what your puppy needs, and who they are today, not who you want them to be. 🥰 Fear is an emotion, it can’t be reinforced - This means it is ok to comfort a scared puppy and show them calm support at times when they need it the most. It WON’T make the fear worse! #puppy #puppytraining #dogtrainer #dogtraining #puppylife #positivereinforcement #dogtraining advice #dogtrainingtips #dachshund #dachshunds #sausagedog #sausagedoglove #daxielove #weinerdog #miniaturedachshund #doggo

If your dog is chasing or fixating on shadows, light, or reflections, this is NOT fun for them, and it should be gently interrupted as soon as possible. Shadow chasing can be due to the following reasons: 💥 Stress or anxiety overload. 💥 Severe frustration. 💥 Gut disturbance. 💥 An underlying medical condition and/or pain. 🐶 Shadow/light/reflection chasing is most commonly seen in working breeds who are stressed and/or bored and need an outlet for their lack of work. However, this does not mean that there isn't an underlying problem that is contributing to the issue. ❌ NEVER encourage chasing of shadows, light, or reflections. ✅ Seek help and support from a force free professional who understands obsessive compulsive behaviours and ensures your dog gets a thorough veterinary checkup. #dog #dogs #dogtraining #puppytraining #dogtrainer #dogreels #viral #collie #spaniels #viralreels #germanshepherd #workingcockerspaniel

Top Tip For Loose Lead Walking 🐾 Reward your dog with the hand that they are on the same side of e.g your dog is on your left, so you reward with your left hand. 🐾 Have your lead at a comfortable length in your opposite hand, have your treats on the same side as your dog for quick and easy delivery. 🐾 This prevents your dog from walking in front and across you to get their treat. 🐾 If the placement of the treat is wrong, your dog will be rewarded for walking quicker, ahead and tripping you over - which isn’t really very helpful! #dog #dogs ##doglover #puppy #dogtraining #puppytraining

Hi Jeff, great question! In my opinion, if they're between 1 year old - 8yrs old with no health conditions or structure problems e.g. hip dysplasia. Then my advice is 90 mins of exploring. If the dog is older than 8yrs old, adjusting for their needs and ability when that time comes is what I advise. Each dog is an individual, so it will vary. Also, having x2 45 mins per day is the equivalent of x1 90 min walk per day, so I'd say you don't need to adjust anything 😉 x

🐾 The first video clip is what I call a “leg lift walk”, a quick 30-minute lead around the block. They are usually used for ensuring my dogs have been for a toilet break and a quick sniff around before I go out for the evening, or perhaps if I suspect fireworks will be due that evening, a “leg lift walk” ensures your dogs have had the opportunity to meet their biological needs. 🐾 “Leg lift walks” are in addition to their actual walks, not instead of. “Walks” are where their functional needs are met. They get to do everything that comes naturally to dogs: exploring, full-body stretching in the form of natural-pace running, socialising (if that is their jam!), and just being free to be a dog. 🐾 Functional walks happen daily, they are approximately 90 minutes in length and are usually in woodlands or bush & tree heavy areas so there is lots to sniff and a lot of land to explore. 🐾 Not having the time to do daily functional walks, doesn’t mean your dog doesn’t need them. The sad truth is that lots of dogs do not get what they NEED when it comes to freedom and exercise, and this is where behaviour problems can start to creep in. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #puppytraining #obediencetraining #dogbehaviour #positivereinforcement

Is there a difference between Reactive dog and Nervous and scared dog 🤔

    • @elliesdogbehaviourvault
      @elliesdogbehaviourvault 2 місяці тому

Yes, not all nervous/scared dogs will react in a forwards defensive manner, some use their flight option and will try to hide or get away, others freeze completely and shut down, they don't respond other than averting eyes and panting heavily, this is like internal screaming!! Reactive dogs have generally just learned that shouting is the most effective option for them and often makes them feel better in the moment, too, particularly if they get their desired response of keeping their trigger away. Of course some reactive behaviour is driven by frustration (usually barrier frustration e.g. leads/windows) and they "react" due to being wound up, they aren't scared or nervous, just frustrated and often have poor greeting skills.

Thanks for leaving a comment! Yes I do indeed, I have lots of shorts like that, but unfortunately the UA-cam algorithm favours shorter shorts where people watch them repeatedly (due to reading information in the description), so I get a much larger reach in this way. I appreciate it's incredibly annoying and is certainly not my preference, but it does help to reach a wider audience, and I've had lots of positive feedback as a result. Longer shorts with all the information included in the video are absolutely what I would prefer to do all the time. But thank you for highlighting it in case I wasn't aware, I appreciate you 🙏 x

💥🐶 Resource Guarding Myth Busting 🐶 💥 ❌ Myth - I need to take things from my puppy’s mouth to stop him from swallowing them. ✅ Truth Behind The Myth - Puppies explore the world with their mouths, they often pick things up, roll them around in their mouths (particularly during painful teething times), move them to different locations and spit them out again. 🐶 It is not common for puppies to swallow non-food items unless they have Pica - research this term if your puppy or dog is a swallower! 🤯 In fact, you can accidentally condition your puppy to swallow items they have picked up because they think you will take them. Swallowing becomes a way of keeping their item “safe” from you stealing it. ✅ If you’d like to stop your puppy from stealing your things and to teach your puppy how to bring and give up their found “treasure” willingly, here is the link to my Puppy Resource Guarding Prevention Program ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ellies-dog-behaviour-vault.teachable.com/p/puppy-resource-guarding-prevention-program (see bio for clickable link!) #dog #dogs #doglover #puppy #dogtraining #puppytraining #reactivedog #viral #viralreels #dogreels #cockerspaniel #cockerpoo #cockapoo #spaniel #goldenretrieverlover #puppiesofinsta #frenchie

💥🐶 12 Reasons Why Dogs Pull On Lead 🐶💥 ⚠ The equipment is uncomfortable / The dog hasn’t been desensitised to their equipment. ⚠ The lead is too short or being held at a short length. ⚠ The environment is too stimulating or too stressful. ⚠ General anxiety outside and wanting to get back home. ⚠ Someone or something is coming too close. ⚠ Inconsistent handling techniques. ⚠ The dog isn’t exercised “freely” enough and they need to explore/stretch their legs naturally. ⚠ The dog’s social requirements aren’t being met - possibly too little or too much exposure. ⚠ The dog hasn’t been taught what Loose Lead Walking is or means (saying “heel” and pulling the lead isn’t teaching!) ⚠ The Loose Lead Walking technique hasn’t been generalised enough to different environments and situations. ⚠ The Loose Lead Walking hasn’t been built up gradually (it’s quite common for handlers to teach at foundation level, then expect the same responses in advanced level situations). ⚠ The dog pulls against the lead and the handler keeps walking to where the dog was pulling. 🐶 Reassess your walks and techniques, chances are your dog needs more space than you realise. Remember, manners come from both ends of the lead! ✅ If you need help with your dog's behaviour seek help! 💥 Did you know that some dogs have a VERY high social requirement? 💥 😬 Some dogs are incredibly sociable and can easily get frustrated when they are on a lead. Leads are a physical barrier and barriers can often cause frustration, along with other social skill struggles. 🐶 Some dogs are very strong pullers due to the frustration of having their freedom removed, and the sheer frustration of wanting to get somewhere quicker!! This can then lead to social frustration which looks like pulling, lunging, spinning, jumping, bouncing backwards and forwards, and other very over-the-top greetings. 😬 To make things more confusing, dogs with social anxiety can also show OTT greeting behaviour. 🐾 If your dog can walk on a loose lead until they see a dog/person and then the pulling, leaping and lunging around starts, then your focus needs to shift from working on loose lead walking to working on the social skills struggle. ✅ If you need help with your dog's social skills and want to enjoy your walks again, drop me a message on WhatsApp! #dog #dogs #doglover #puppy #dogtraining #puppytraining #reactivedog #viral #viralreels #dogreels

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. If it's recalls, follow my rapid recall playlist for how to teach an effective recall. Particularly pay attention to the 10 layers of recalls video. If it's to lay down or switch off, usually you have to teach this, again, I have videos for this on my channel called 'settle down', and building duration in a settle down. If its to stop doing something, you're better off teaching what you want them to do instead then asking your dog to do it in the moment. I would argue that your dog doesn't understand what you want if you're having to ask more than once. Either that, or you've taught them by asking multiple times, so that is what they understand the "cue words" to mean. I'm glad you are asking and not commanding 😀 That is great!

💥🐶 STOP commanding your dog to do what you want!! 💥🐶 ✅ Think of your dog as a colleague at work. You would ASK them to do something for you that you know they can do. 🐶 I will ask my dog to do something by giving them a cue word, which means “I would like you to perform an act I have taught you to do , e.g“come”, “settle down”, “wait”, “thank you”. ✅ If I have been effective in my training and I am aware of my dog’s abilities, they will be able to do this without hesitation. 💥 This is why I use the word “cue” not command. I'm not commanding anyone to do anything. This is a mutually enjoyable relationship that we (hopefully!) both want to be a part of. It's not a dictatorship. 🐶 Dogs aren’t deaf, and dogs aren’t stupid. Commanding your dog in a tone that is loud or intimidating isn’t necessary, in fact, you should be able to whisper your cue word ONCE and your dog still fully understands what you’d like and is able to carry out that task for you. 🤷If you’re repeating yourself in order to get what you want, your dog either doesn’t understand or doesn’t care - in both cases, you need to go back to basics! 🐶 If my dog can't do what I ask of them, and I know that they fully understand the task I have asked them to do, I look for the reason why. Because I wouldn't have asked them to do it if I didn't think they could carry out the task, that would be daft! And I then work on that… Here are some reasons a dog might not be able to do what you’re asking: 💥Anxiety in the situation or environment 💥They are overstimulated, e.g., too much going on 💥They didn’t hear me properly 💥External pressure, e.g. I called my dog to me when another dog is sniffing them intently over their shoulders and causing them to feel concerned about moving. 🐾 If my dog can’t follow the task I am asking them to do, it is my role in our relationship to go back to the foundation basics of teaching them what I want them to do, and build up in gradual stages to reach the point I’m happy with. ✅ If you need help, drop me a message on WhatsApp! #dog #dogs #doglover #puppy #dogtraining #puppytraining #reactivedog #viral #viralreels ##dogreels

💥 “Nip It In The Bud” 💥 A common phrase used in the dog-owning and dog-training world to describe the intention behind working on changing what a dog does. Usually, this is something that is annoying, frustrating or stressful for the dog owner. I'm really not keen on this term for a number of reasons, mainly because "nipping something in the bud" implies stopping a behaviour or response from happening in the future, regardless of the reason or need behind it. Here is what you need to know if there is something you'd like to "nip in the bud": By the time you’ve noticed it as a problem, it is no longer in the ‘budding’ stage. This is now a full-blown established behavioural response learned from previous experiences that you’re seeing. It may be a coping mechanism, a self-rewarding behaviour or meeting a breed-specific need. Here is a non-exhaustive list of unwanted behaviours that are no longer ‘budding’: 💥 Pulling on the lead 💥 Lunging and barking on the lead 💥 Ignoring recalls 💥 Jumping up (did you know that some dogs jump up when they need “help” - it can be an indicator that your dog is struggling in that situation) 💥 Biting/excessive mouthing 💥 Barking in the car, garden and/or out of windows 💥 Barking at you/ your other dogs 💥 Traffic chasing/herding/fleeing 💥 Shadow/light/reflection chasing 💥 Stealing food or always scavenging for food sources 💥 Stealing items 💥 Guarding items, food, space, people, chews, toys etc. 💥 Snapping, snarling, nipping or biting - you, someone else or another dog 💥 Howling, crying, barking, pacing, urination, defecation and/or destroying items when left alone If your dog is already showing any of the behaviours above, they are no longer testing to see what works/helps/changes the situation, they are now fully aware of what they are trying to gain. They are now using that response first, more often than not, because it works. If you need help with your dog's behaviour seek help! 💥Dogs do not know right from wrong! 💥 🤷 That is a human concept and varies from person to person. For example, I may be completely at ease with my dogs jumping up at me and jumping up at my house guests, therefore it is ‘right’ and acceptable, whereas you may not be at ease with it at all and consider it ‘wrong’ and highly unacceptable. ⁉️ The dog doesn’t have an understanding of right from wrong, nor do they care, what they do understand is safe vs unsafe and how to get their needs met in that moment. 🐶 Quite often ‘unwanted behaviour’ is, in fact, normal dog behaviour, even further to that, many unwanted behaviours are in fact due to their genetic heritage e.g. breed type - We just aren’t keen on it! 🐾 Now, consider the fact that we put our dogs in over 90% of the situations that they find themselves in. It is usually their response to that situation that we find distasteful and want to prevent or stop it from happening. ✅ Dogs are very capable of learning new things and building new associations within certain situations, stop taking dog behaviour personally, look at the situation and look at the need your dog is trying to meet for itself and focus on that as a starting point. #dog #dogs #doglover #puppy #dogtraining #puppytraining #reactivedog #viral #viralreels #dogreels

You might be ruining your own recalls without even realising it. If your dog currently has a shaky recall, read my tips below and make the changes: ❌ Asking your dog to “sit” when they come back to you. Now, there is nothing wrong with asking your dog to sit when they return to you IF they already have a strong recall. However, if you are teaching them to come back to you, but you are withholding your reward (praise/food/toy) until your dog is sitting down - congratulations, you’ve strengthened your “sit” and weakened your recall! ✅ Instead, reward your dog as soon as they return to you! Preferably in between your feet for treats, so they come in with their paws on the floor. ❌ Using your recall word as an interrupter without any follow up reinforcement for your dog e.g. calling their name, and then just ignoring your dog when they look at you. You’d be amazed how many times dog owners call their dog without any expectation of them coming all the way back, but yet when they want the dog to listen and come back, they use the same word. How is the dog supposed to know what you want? ✅ Instead, keep your dogs recall word sacred, it ALWAYS means run to my feet I have something awesome for you. And it is ALWAYS reinforced with whatever your dog finds super valuable. ❌ And the biggest recall destroyer is only calling them to you for something negative e.g. to put the lead on, to come out of the puddle/river, to walk away from playing with another dog, to get back in the car at the end of a walk. If the only time you’re calling your dog is for something that your dog sees as a negative, you’re not going to have a very reliable recall! ✅ Instead, use a different cue word to move on from play/social interactions/water etc. such as “this way” which means the dog can still be “free” but are moving on with you. This keeps your recall word super strong as it isn’t being ruined with negative associations.

Believe it or not, this is a training session! A lesson in calmness 🙌 🐶 Lots of dogs understand how to lay down, or even how to target a mat/blanket and lay down. But not many understand how to relax and settle down. 😴 To get calmness, you must be calm and reward calm. If your dog already understands how to lay down, introduce a mat/blanket for them to lay on. ✅Reward the mat not the dog ✅ Reward quietly, calmly and with gentle placement of your treats ✅ Reward when your dog rests their head on the floor ✅ Reward when your dog relaxes their posture e.g. hips/legs out to the side #dogtraining #dogowners #reactivedogs #cockerpoo #cockapoo #cockerpoosofinsta #selfcontroltraining #doggo #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainer #puppiesofinsta

Are your dog walks as enjoyable as you'd imagined they would be...? 💩 🤬 🐶 It's not uncommon for dogs to have various behaviour and training struggles when out and about, but dogs are quick learners, and even behaviour that is well rehearsed can be improved, and new habits can be built. 😲 This turn around with the very gorgeous Evie took less than four weeks! 🐾 You have to walk the dog every day anyway, so why not book a call with me (or send a WhatsApp message if you'd prefer!) and start making those daily walks much more enjoyable!!! 🙌 #dogowner #terrier #cairnterrier #looseleadwalking #recalltraining #dogtraining #stopeatingeverything #greedydog #dogwalks
