Wonderful video. Im a Susan Garrett fan 😊 I love when you said "people want a dog who doesn't do dog things" and it's so true. What's even worse many "problem" behaviors (such as barking) were bred into them by humans, and now they get punished for it. Crazy. We take an animal and try to make it live by our standards and rules in a human society and that is just wild... but no one ever thinks about it. Anyway, great video! I hope it helps lots of people

I dont really understand how you taught your dog that bike is equal to ball.
We have a border collie almost 6 months old. She is reacting at everything that moves on walks, especially bikes and motorbikes. But when we play with the ball she is like hypnotised and only focussed on the ball.
So can you please explain how to teach her to not react on everything that moves?

This is a great comment! It's not that the bike is equal to a ball at all, it is that my dog could practice her chase drive on the ball every time a bike appeared. Playing ball wasn't something that just happened on every walk, it happened only when bikes came into view, which made it SUPER valuable to her, and VERY beneficial to me.
There was also a little bit of management in place for the first 2 - 3 times she saw a bike to ensure she didn't practice chasing the bike whilst I introduced the new direction of chase (the ball). This part is important!
Your dog's desire to react to everything that moves comes from her genetics, she is supposed to care about movement and is drawn to it. She will also likely be incredibly sound sensitive too, this is fairly normal for herding types such as Border Collies.
If you'd like a Zoom call to discuss how we could introduce this technique into your dog's world and to help with the current bike & motorbike association she has, drop me an email - elliesdogbehaviourvault@gmail.com
Thanks for leaving a comment and helping others to learn more too! :)

Fantastic video! I'm in Susan Garrett's Recallers program and I think you clearly summed up the first thing I noticed. It is better to teach your dog to make good decisions than it is to try to control them. As you teach them how to make good choices, you begin to see all the behaviors change. The dog has the tools to choose what is better for them and you. They also learn to look to you for guidance and it builds a better bond. Your relationship becomes one of cooperation rather than competition. It's very harmonious.

Yes! You are absolutely spot on! Cooperation rather than competition is exactly it. Training and working on behaviour becomes fun rather than a chore and a battle. Thanks for watching and for leaving such a great, detailed comment! x

I totally agree! I tried Susan Garrett’s training but I am a visual learner and I just can’t learn through podcasts. I wish more people would show training with real dogs in real situations.

Absolutely, I agree! I have some Susan Garrett IYC examples on my channel, too, if it helps! Thanks for leaving a comment x

Yes!! 🤗🧡thank you for this! Hi I am wanting to go to school to get certified as a behavioral list although I do have experience and we consider myself well-versed in behavior and people absolutely hate when I bring this up and say it is so important to work and focus on this!
Changed how I trained and I’m so much happier as are my dogs! My clients are happier too!

Thank you so much for leaving such a great comment! Self-control and compliance are a world of different to each other. Being able to teach with both will ultimately allow dogs more freedom and a much better life! ❤️
