Speaking of your "controversial opinion," I very much agree!! I don't want it shoe horned in, to coin a phrase, I want it to have REASON to be there. And again, I agree with you. The way it was done with Tara and Willow was poignant and made sense in the story. I know, being a fangirl of both shows, they kind of destroyed it with what happened with Kennedy in the seventh season because I feel like they made Willow fall for her. I guess what I am trying to say here is, I feel like Tara and Willow were given the grace of nuance and build to their love. Where as Kennedy kind of forced herself on to Willow. Not in a nonconcential way, but Willow was not entirely sure she wanted to be with a woman after Tara. Kennedy more or less convinced Willow to start their relationship. But, then maybe it is just their personalities, and I am reading it a different way. Anyway, a very long-winded YES to your ideas about sexuality in media.

While i really love Rose on her own, i think i hate her relationship with the Tenth Dr. She's also just not a very memorable character, which would be okay : but most of her fans argue she's flawed and ordinary while they shit on Clara so much, which is extremely hypocritical. She's always made out as this extremely important figure in the Dr's life, by every refs to her and by the fandom, and while yeah it might be argued he was in love with her, he was in love with other companions too (and romantic love toward her does NOT make her more important then companion where it wasn't the case). My main problem is that she's 19, and a part of her characterisation is that when she was 17 she already ran away with another older man and ppl dont think its unhealthy for her life to revolve around the Dr? Even when she's finally separate from him she gets a new Dr she's gonna be stuck with probably for the rest of her life. I do like her but the timepetal whole thing is kinda icky

I think in a future regeneration the seige of trenzelore should happen and i think river song should be brought back a bit before she meets 12 but gets told by that doctor to never mention there regeneration to themself, and at trenzelore the doctor gets killed and thinks they won't regenerate as they know they'll die there but, instead river channels the doctors regeneration energy into a technical thing idk what, and burns up half the planet ultimately killing everyone but river ofc as she'll be in the TARDIS and when the doctor survives the regeneration thry are shocked but realises that they need to set up their grave for 11 as they are the timeless child and can not die but but 11 needs trenzelore.

Ahem... sorry but this wasn't Rose who kissed The Doctor in New Earth - that was Cassandra who possesed her body. I feel like I must correct you her. Also I found Doctor+River relationships much more toxic and stalkerish (mostly from her part)... Moffat overall seems to have facination with toxic and manuplative almost abusive relationship - which I found very worrying. But to be fair New Who has very bad take on love, relationship and romance for the most part - no matter who we are talking about.

For me it comes down to a question of consistency Vs Peak highs and payoffs. Buffy Season 3 is I think undeniably the most consistent of either show, barely a bad episode. But for me at least there also aren't many if any absolute top tier episodes that would make my Top 10. When I think of Buffy and Angels best episode's it'd be a while before I named any from season 3. I love it, but just dont think I could name it my absolute top season when there isnt an episode in it that would make my top ten. Seasons 2 and 5 both have several top 10 episodes, even season 4 has a few, but 3 despite its undeniably superb quality throughout, is lacking a truly amazing episode or two to really propell it. Just my thoughts though, I love both shows and really need to give them a rewatch, especially Angel. Its been a loooong time since I watched Angel.

I think Season 7 deserves more love. It gets judged really harshly, but I think it balances the adult darkness of Seasons 5 & 6 with the more buoyant tone of seasons 3 & 4. Also, if I were ranking the Buffyverse, every season of Buffy would rank above every season of Angel (except maybe the 1st or 4th seasons of Buffy).

In Buffy's season finale, it was necessary for Anya to die. She was a demon and Spike was a demon. No demon or former demon were going to get out of the hellmouth/Sunnydale at the end. It was painful for them to die, but only the humans in the gang were going to get out. If Angel hadn't left, he wouldn't have made it out either. I understand why people hated it, but it was inevitable.

The actor who played Leela must have had her back ache from carrying s15.

A lot of those continuity errors with both shows were fixed in the comic books actually. If only there was enough budget to remake those into series...

i agree with the entire list! i go back and forth on whether or not i like buffy season 3 or buffy season 5 better, after being out of high school for a few years i think it’s season 5 because of how much it speaks to the experience of being an adult. but season 3 is just so perfect.

As usual the screen rant contributor simply fails to understand Classic Who and as you said probably never watched it. 1960s-70s TV was conceived as a television drama. Blocking and rehearsal for 5 days, recorded Friday evening and went to air Saturday afternoon on low definition B&W. You didn't see the imperfections back then nor the wobbly sets. For it's time you saw far more non-white and women actors in positions of authority than was the norm in most TV back then. Li-sen in the Talon's of Wang Chi-ang was an incredibly sympathetic portrayal of a of a humble peasant whisked away to a world he did not understand by his god and then betrayed. It was an accurate historical drama in so many ways.

Subscribed today after watching your Buffy season rankings. Your channel is perfect for me. Doctor Who and Buffy are two of my favorite shows of all time. I’m an older fan. My Doctor Who introduction was from the Tom Baker era. I live in the US and I didn’t discover Doctor Who until I was in college. Fell in love with it of course and watched every episode I could find (which was a difficult task in 1980’s USA). I agree with you on Season 5 of new Who except for one qualification. I think it is the single best season of Who in the entire run of the show, both Classic and new Who. ❤

Season 3 is my favorite as well. Your other rankings are close to mine, but different. Spike is my favorite character in Buffy - an opinion which definitely shows in my rankings. In my mind, Spike’s story arc was the best in the series. He went from being a petty, mean big bad to a true hero with lots of huge bumps along the way. Great video! I really enjoyed it! ❤

Hot take: I think Angel Season 5 is super overrated and I like Angel season 4 a little bit more. Still neither are as good as Angel's first two seasons, but season 4 gets a lot of flack even though it has many great storylines and episodes. and Season 5 of course has some great episodes too, but people get amnesia about the bad episodes and poor pacing in Season 5

I personally wouldn't put any season of Buffy below any season of Angel except maybe season 7. The reason is that what's most important to me is the characters. More than the plot. I just like Buffy's characters more.

I hated how Martha was treated (I love Martha); I was over Rose the second she arrived and thought the Doctor should have been too. I did really like Rose with Nine. I can't say I didn't like Rose in series three, even, but it was easy for me to move on.

Season 1 Rose: Great Rose after that: Just no, not good. And the love story was shit. He's a centuries old alien and she is a teenager it's icky and weird.

As I look back all that, I think one of the main reason love Rose so much is because young teen girls and women in their twenty were able to view her as a self-insert character for themselves. They didn’t love Rose for Rose's sake, they loved her because they thought of themselves as her. They wanted to be the one in a relationship with David Tennant's Doctor so bad they couldn't see the obvious flaws in their relationship and her shift in characterization.

In parting of the ways the part that really stuck out to me is roses rant about fish and chips and what normal humans do. I like it when Mickey attempts to call her out by stating: “It’s what the rest of us do”. When rose claims she can’t Mickey puts her in her place stating “Why, because you think you’re better than us?” Before Rose cuts him off. This scene gave me a full picture on Rose as a character as a selfish person who thinks because she has traveled doctor thinks she is above everyone else and doesn’t value the normal good things in life. ‘Fish and Chips are a wonderful part of life Rose, learn to appreciate what’s in front of you’!

Wtf are you on about with Willow and Tara, of course it's fucking political, it was 1999, I mean everything is political, but especially that, Buffy is clearly and undeniably a very progressive leaning show and yes, including a gay romance is a part of that and is in itself a political statement especially since it's not even something that came up naturally, it was planned from the very beginning that one of the companions will be gay, but it wasn't planned which one (which is why Xander is clearly bi though he's technically never in a reletionship with another man) which means it was added for the sake of having a gay romance. It's done extremely well, which is another thing, but it's undeniably political

Buffy season 6 has alway been the best for me, I love all the miserable shit that happens in the season and I don't dislike the silly epsiodes I think they're integral in compounding all the misery. While Buffy has always been fun, I've always enjoyed the hardest to watch parts the most, (which is also why I disagree with you about Angel season4) I just love the idea that after the ending of season 5 life goes on. I love how the bad guys are just three idiots who don't realise the magnitude of their actions until they've done some truly horrible shit and it's pretty much to late for them. I love how Buffy throughout the entire season feels like she really wants to kill herself and the only reason she isn't in the middle of it is because there are to many people relying on her. I get why it's hard to watch for people and I even understand how one would hate it, but I just love it, especially Spike, I really, really love Spike. It also is the only season to make me cry twice which is something I guess

My main problem with Buffy season 6 is that the metaphors they want to hint at aren't hinted at - They're practically anviled at you. Yes, oh yes show. We get it. Magic is a metaphor for drugs! Drugs are bad! Boo. It actually knocks it below season 7 for me, which I also thought was super weak. Buffy works best when the metaphors are subtle. I do agree Tabula Rasa and Once More With Feeling are showstoppers.

I think Season 4 could have been improved by keeping Maggie as the "big bad", experimenting on the soldiers as by demonic genesplicing. It's a scary and believable idea. Adam wasn't a bad idea, but he could have been more sympathetic, really. The one on whom she went too far. He ended up locked away. Buffy and the gang discover him... something like that. Season 1: When I rewatch it I tend to skip Teacher's Pet, Puppet Show, and I-robot. These could actually easily have been improved, though: a possessed doll is a classic horror trope- I think if I were done more in an "Anabelle" style it could have been really enjoyable. The Doll didn't need to speak or be seen running around, and it is that which cheapens it. I-robot, again, close to being great: The idea of the book being "read" by the computer is so clever, and the demon being trapped in the internet, but then the dangers therein is a really good and scary thought, it just gets ruined by the robot body (I don't like any of the robots in the Buffyverse TBH). Teachers pet... I dunno, maybe it's just a "pet peeve". A succubus demon preying on teenaged boys' horniness, I guess it could be done well, I just didnt like that episode...

So happy to see both pairing with Clara so high! Her and 12 must be top tier, but I was pleasantly surprised that her and 11 were up on the "decent" tier considering many people think they don't have any chemistry together. I would atribute some of that to beiing they only had a half a season together before 11 regenerated, but also her following up on Amy and Rory meant to many that she didn't live up to them since they were so beloved together. At any rate, I'm glad to see that you saw both of those pairings worth. Good list. 👍
