Hi I’m Shal Mines and I am a mixed media artist who loves books and has a passion for using objects that are damaged, unloved, and obsolete to create bespoke pieces of art. I also have Aphantasia, which means I have no ability to visualise anything. All my art is worked out as I go along with just the vague idea of what I want to achieve and I am just as surprised as anyone on how they will turn out. If I had to describe my art process, my response is just wing it and enjoy.

The Making Of, 1901 Magner’s Horse and Stock Book, Book Carving. Start to Finish Video
This book carving has taken quite a few months to complete but now it’s finally done and here is the whole process from start to finish. This is the second one of these books I have used to create one of these carvings and it’s always interesting to see how different they all turn out.

Just how flaming long the gluing takes on this kind of book carve. I have a preference to making the carving within the book and using the book as a frame, less glueing time is the biggest thing. In antique shops you can find the button hook tools made of sterling silver. These were used to pull the buttons through the eye holes.
Yeah they do. I don’t intend these boots to be opened again as I am going to use them for an art piece, but if I was going to I would need a hook as what I didn’t show in that video , I had to re do the buttons stitching them via the holes as I couldn’t do them up by hand 😂. Good job the buttons have metal shanks

Thank you, I know some people find it hard to see but if it helps all books use are normally obsolete or damaged and most of the time out of date, some have been far past the point of being binned and incredibly dirty so I like to think I am saving them and showing they are still beautiful

Your work is actually insane, im so surprised with how few likes and subscribers you have! Do you cut out all the illustrations and reorder them, or are these all the original locations of the illustrations in the book?
Thank you, glad you like it. I’ve only been on UA-cam about 6 or so weeks so fingers crossed it gets better. In answer to your question both. But I prefer to move them about, the composition is better that way
