Microsoft Surface Pro X - Artist Review
Very nice review I got a question❓ can you create animation on CSP with it a crash and lastly how. smooth runs blender
Yes you can create animation in CSP, no problem. As far as blender it runs decently. My issue becomes more of a screen space problem. I like larger screens when using, but the laptop studio will do fine.
best video ~
I’ve been looking at this product and have been contemplating on it cause i want a tablet to draw in photoshop and a laptop to work in illustrator. How is it weight wise, does it feel heavy say when you are on the couch and just want to draw?
If you treat it like a tablet and try to draw by holding it, then weight will be a problem. It's a hefty laptop. That being said, it has good lapability. I recommend using it only on your lap or table. You can use it on the couch as long as it's on your lap or on the side of you on the couch.
Hello thank you so much for the review! I am currently doing alot of murals hence I need like super big canvases and iPad is failing me. Honestly would you recommend?
No problem! Yes it's an excellent piece of hardware and still my main art laptop. The only device I recommend over it would be the Galaxy Book pro360 line up. The bigger screen size and spen is top notch.
@@C.Wilson thanks for getting back to me! I saw some reviews although majority of the reviews said that the pen is superb but unfortunately unlike the Studio 2, the Galaxy Book does not come with a dedicated GPU which is quite a major downside ):
Will any of the s9 fe and fe+ with their Exynos chipsets perform well animating with lots of layers in CSP? I'm debating on getting one since they're MUCH cheaper than the s9 series, but I'll only go with FE(s) if they can animate well without taking a huge performance hit.
Honestly that should be ok. The only problem I could see you running into is length and resolution. If you're working with a lot of layers at a high resolution and dpi that chip will heat up. Short 720p projects will be fine.
After months of sketching and painting, does the pen leave scratches and dents on the screen? Thanks
@@CoyotePark Yes over time. If you're heavy handed the plastic screen starts to show some wear.
@@C.Wilson uhh.. that's not good. Meanwhile s23/24 Ultra is way too big of a phone.
After time, does the pen leave dents and scratches on the inner display??
@@CoyotePark Yes over time you'll see a few marks. Nothing too crazy unless you're heavy handed.
Nice review! I'm wondering how you like the Dial and the Slim Pen? I'm coming from Wacom Cintiqs (I'm a snob for pen line quality and comfort-- can't stand the iPad Pro but maybe I got a faulty unit, the tilt latency drives me nuts) and XP Pen Pro and Wacom Mobile Studio Pro (express keys galore!!! And twisty wheels!!!!!) Do you find the Slim pen to be comfortable and well-receptive? You were getting a nice variation in line width in your video. And for the Dial, I think I read it's got multiple functions; I'm hoping for something to easily flip animation frames and brush sizes, while also easily providing at least 4 hotkeys. I'm thinking I may just pair an old Wacom Remote as in theory, it should do the job (but I really really love the wheel on the XP Pen). Not expecting you to have played with all these devices, but appreciate any thoughts you may have, if you do have experience with them! Thanks!
@@tahnmeep Thank you. I do find the slim pen easy to hold and use. It's a pretty solid bit I would definitely put Wacom, Apple, and even Samsung a notch above the slim pen. the Dial can be useful, I use it as a glorified back button. This is why I like what they did with the new surfaces having the ability to use the new type cover when not connected. Though you may be able to program the Dial to do a bit more. If you have a nearby best buy I recommend going and trying out the slim pen. They should have display surfaces out just so you can see if the pen is something you can get used to.
@@C.Wilson Great suggestion with checking out the pen at Best Buy! I heard something once that Samsung is using Wacom technology. It looks like the Dial has rotate, click-hold, and click. For my old setup with the Mobile Studio Pro I'd just use a Logitech keyboard, which is likely what I'd do for the Surface.... I need my hotkeys!!
Been drawing on my Note 8 since 2017, and was on the fence about the Z-Fold line given the screen crease and the new S-Pen. Thanks so much for giving an artist's perspective on these devices. I think I'll commit to a Z-Fold 6 when the price drops and upgrade every 3-4 models afterward!
That's definitely the best bet! Gives enough room for some good changes. Here is to hoping for a built in s-pen slot in the future. So far this is still the best digital pocket sketch book.
Does it have a cursor/pointer visible (with pen) on the screen as it is in case of Samsung Spen?
Using it I didn't see the cursor. I actually should try it again. I am running the Android 15 beta and am curious about the pen updates.
@@C.Wilson Please update me if you see the cursor/pointer. It will be very helpful to me during writing and doing presentations displayed on a projector screen. I want to use it on the OneNote app.
No it doesn't. I just gave it a try and there's no hover cursor unless you're about to write something. Once you hover over anything text related, a little icon pops up.
How do you get 10 hours of battery life I get like 3-4?
What is the circle thing you’re using to erase?
@@jman1080 I'm using the Surface Dial. Microsoft hasn't really been updating the Dial line up, but it can be useful.
@@C.Wilson Ok cool, thanks
"do i trust Google to keep supporting this device?" Answer : No, no I don't. Because google has a bad habit of killing good stuff.
@@danielosawaru9045 I agree, but I also will say I believe Google is now forced to support. Reason being is the United States Android manufacturers have dwindled. Leaving mainly Samsung. Google has to keep Android from falling.
Do you draw in tent mode? if so, how is the screen stability with applying pressure with the hand while drawing? is there very noticeable Screen flex?
@@MRwilsondraws I tend to draw with the screen flat. Unless it's in my lap then I do draw in tent mode. It doesn't flex too much. I also most of the time have my non-drawing hand behind the screen as well for added stability.
@@C.Wilson Thanks for this video review! I'm thinking about upgrading my system, and was thinking about using the laptop in flat mode but placing it on one of those tilting easels (I have a Parblo from Amazon). Do you think that would work well? It fits my XP-Pen Pro 13 perfectly.
Hi sir do you have crack clip studio panin software I don't have money to pay for buy in web.
@@sovindesign Unfortunately I don't. The best way might be through the monthly subscription or to catch a sale 🙏🏾.
I thought this was from Brad😅
I'll take that as a compliment 😁
I really hope Google comes out with their own stylus that rivals the other big three!
@@jaedo71 True! That's my only let down so far for the pixel tablet. Google has to stay up its stylus game.
Great Channel man! Are the Z Fold and S Ultra series the only phones with pressure sensitivity. I want a phone I can draw on but if any other company (Xiaomi, Google etc) makes a cheaper one that would be great.
Thank you for the review, and thoughts at the end! :'D
Tell me what app you're using please 🙏 ice been struggling with my fold 😅
@@BroJustNo. I'm using Clip Studio Paint 👍🏾.
@@C.Wilson nice! ;D
imagine using any windows 3D\2D program without keyboard shortcuts.,,..,,. who designed this... lol
@@danteuss88 That's the biggest headache for the Laptop Studio 2. All in all the Pro 11 with the new flex keyboard is the way to go. If they made a bigger version or brought back the Surface Book with a removable keyboard that becomes Bluetooth when detached.
I love these types of videos but I wonder why everyone always leaves out Krita
I think Krita is a great application. It just falls a little below things like Clip Studio. The shining thing is Krita being free does push it on top of the best free art application.
Oh nice one ! Actually i also want to start doing some digital arts on my fold 4 can you plz give me some tips 🥹
Honestly, the best advice I have is patience and zoom in and out as you draw. The further zoomed in or lower the dpi, the more control over the line you create without smoothing.
@@C.Wilson Thank you for your advice ❤️🥹🫶
Which is better new ipad pro or Samsung s9 ultra for rough animation 60fps
Both tablets are quite similar, with the main difference being the available apps. Additionally, the Tab S9 comes with a stylus S Pen, while the iPad does not. Both tablets can handle all tasks effectively, but if you prefer using Procreate, it is only available on the iPad.
How about samsung s9 ultra for rough animation
Definitely 👍🏾 and with such a large display and gives you a lot more space to work with.
Thanks for the review
Thanks
1. I'm interested if you have to be careful not to touch the screen when using pen... this very important for me, I'd like to keep my hand on the screen freely. So can you turn off touch? (I could perhaps only use two-finger zoom etc. and it would preferably only work when there are exactly two touch points used clearly.) 2. Also if it's too slippery, it's not good to draw. This is one of the reasons I could not buy Surface Studio (not the lapstop studio, I haven't tried the screen yet). 3. Also while I have one Surface Pro and it's good, I'm a power laptop user also so for example I'd like to be able to be in ANY position without the screen dropping or something (so for example 180 degrees on my thighs when I'm sitting knees up), so that's why traditional laptops and Surface Book would be much better; I've decided not to buy the trad. Surface Pro model.
For both, using the Slim Pen 2 offers little to no resistance. There is a feature built in that mimics texture. It's not bad, but a matte protector would give more grip. I've not had any issues drawing and having my hands on the screen.
What tablet are you using
Good question. My main device is my Surface Laptop Studio 2 and on the go is the Tab S9 plus.
@@C.Wilson will the tab s9 do just fine?
@@moa-anims 👍🏾 yes. It's more of a pick your size choice with the Tab S9 lineup. Unless you go with the FE Tabs which has weaker specs overall.
I drew 2 years on a p900 b4 switching to s6lite. I enjoyed that I always knew where the stylus was. Also, the s6lite pen is better. But having a spen with you with you at all time would be amazing. Whats the point of spen support if you need to carry an extra pen ??!
Yep I agree. I've honestly been hoping for a stronger bendable glass and pen slot for so long on the fold line up. I fear if they do the price would make it to a point where you'd be better off buying a tablet for much cheaper or a decent laptop.
Hhmm shame. Thr zfolds look so brittle .. I want to like em. Also I could buy several s6lite s for the price of one zfold
Very nice review Thank you Only wanted to ask does on a tablet working windows same full version as on laptop?? It’s full version of adobe photoshop will be or cut one? Because i wanted Samsung tab but it’s android on tab so no access for full versions
Windows has full desktop versions for all Windows devices/tablets.
Does the crease in the middle when the phone is opened affect drawing at all? Like say you run the stylus across the display to make a line on your art, does it dip down into the crease?
Yes, the crease if you attempt to draw slowly causes the S-Pen to dip down. If you go fast you won't experience it. It does tend to get annoying for line art. Sketching not as much.
For me it has no effect I can't even feel it when I draw and it doesnt effect the line atleast for. The softer glass makes it easier to draw for me than the ultra devices or any other tablet .
This review was really helpful, I appreciate that you actually showed us how you use it rather than just talking and talking as in most of the review videos.
Thank you 🙏🏾. Still my main laptop for art. Such a phenomenal piece of hardware.
"rock steady 60 fps, as you can see" That fps counter is showing major dips into the 40s
is S6 lite tab enough for 2d animations?
Definitely good enough. You might run into a problem if you use too many layers, but that's about it.
@@C.Wilson what is max layers it can handle?
God, thank you for this! Almost no one is talking about the palm rejection.
Can I use the old Surface Book 2 pen with this? Or does it have to be a slim one?
You can, but you'll lose out on some features that come with the Slim Pen 2. I've also noticed a bit more wobble to the line using the older pen.
Stylus support was the reason I went for Tab S9 over Pixel. I would have loved to use Pixel to match my Pixel 8 Pro.
If you really care about pen quality and line quality, the Tab S9 is the better choice.
How much power does a tablet need to fully animate with, for example, Flipa Clip? I was animating on my phone and after a minute my phone completely messed up all the frames and also the layers. So the work was completely for the trash. That was frustrating. So how much performance would a tablet need to prevent something like that from happening to me?
Honestly any tablet or phone powered by the latest snapdragon processor (8 Gen 2) will be good. A Tab S9 any model is great for art on the Android side of things.
@@C.Wilson And IOS?
For IOS, any iPad from 9th gen or higher is perfect and slightly overkill. @@liamkrogmann8073
@@C.Wilson Thanks for your answers. :D
I love this yet the background music is very load, keep it very low, or better yet remove it as a whole, we play music in the background anyway.
Hey guys I Use the concepts app for my drawings and I just need an app that I can import my drawings into that does more than 10 fps. Any ideas? I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for.
Have you tried importing into Clip Studio Paint? That should work, but it does require a subscription.
@@C.Wilson Can you add audio to clip studio? Can you make videos that are the size of a youtube short?
You can add audio to Clip Studio and make shorts as well. There is no audio scrubbing which can make precise lip-syncing a problem. @@jeffreydavid6794
@C.Wilson what is audio scrubbing?
@@jeffreydavid6794 it's where you can drag a slider back a forward and hear the audio as you scrub through on the time line. It's good for voice syncing.
Google once again is trying to suck people into the generational product evolution. So you'll get sucked into buying the next one with 'improvements". If they release "the best tablet" then there's no market for a new tablet. Don't get suckered. Just buy a Samsung or Apple now it'll save you more money in the long run.
can you use the old s pen on the z fold 5?
No it'll damage the screen. You'll need either the fold edition s-pen or the $99 spen that has a button to change it to a fold safe spen tip.
Yo fam. What app u using on that moonknight drawing
I'm using Clip Studio Paint. If you have a Samsung tablet I recommend using the Samsung store on the tablet vs the Play store.
Are there any new animated apps? I just got the S23 ultra and i came from the Note 10. I was tryna get into animation with the note 10 found a app and lost it.
There is a small amount of new apps that came out. Ibis recently added an animation feature as well. I'll need to do a follow up to start the new year.
How about a rough animator app
Rough animator excellent as well. I really should put out an updated version of this.
Yes bro. Have you ?@@C.Wilson
Im thinking about buying the version 1 you think its a good buy for a small business
If you can get one with maxed out specs for a good deal then yes. My Laptop Studio Gen1 still had great performance.
@@C.Wilson the one I'm able to get is the 1ygb and 500 gb one with the processor
@@midollafun If it has the RTX graphics then you'll be good. 👍🏾
@@C.Wilson excuse me for asking too much of what is the RTX graphics. I'm really not tech-savvy savvy, I'm on a tight budget so I'll only be able to get the i5 with the 512gb. Is this an okay version do I need the RTX? Edit: I'll get the surface pro 9 since I already have a laptop and just want an all in one art tablet like an alternative mobilestudio pro. Thanks for answering my questions though.
The pro 9 is a solid choice as well. The biggest thing when it comes to the laptop studio in my opinion is the option for more power. The RTX version have Nvidia's graphics meaning extra power to run task like heavy photoshop or even blender. The pro 9 is what I would go for if I didn't want the better speeds from the RTX Laptop Studios. @@midollafun
very good review, thanks!
What app are you using creating art?
I'm using Clip Studio Paint. It's really my go to app for both Windows and Android.
