What about acoustic pianos? You can control those with your fingers And/or with a MIDI interface For example, Disklavier (it both plays and senses) I also can't understand why concert pianists record audio but not MIDI
Tbh concert pianists wouldn't record midi as an acoustic piano has no midi capability, you're just recording the sound through microphones. There are ways of converting that sound to MIDI, but doesn't really serve any purpose. Also audio is far more detailed than MIDI in its 'resolution' and capturing all the nuances of a performance (MIDI effectively just captures the 'data' not the raw audio). Cheers.
You’re the best Respected teacher Shalom from Texas !
I need you to come to my studio man ur skilled
Midi is great but is missing something, the timing is a huge problem. Firstly all notes come in serial so there is no tight sequencing possible. Every device has it's own latency to produce the actual audio so even if the notes would come at the same time at a few different machines the audio is never in sync..... Midi clock is the same shit using multiple sequencers without a multiclock will result in flamming audio. So yes midi opened up many good stuff but it should have a timing code as well and a latency per channel or output offset. Time code would at least make sample accurate output of audio possible. I have used quite some hardware with multiple sequencers and cirklons as well I had all audio tight on the grid wich is quite unique. The only way around this is delaying (offsetting) the audio to allign tha various instruments. One be suprised how much major setups just rely on midi and midi clock not taking in concern the obvious differences in midi to audio latancy. Use a multiclock and allign the audio (by ear or on the grid in a daw) and you will first understand how things should sound..... Timing needs to be tight and latency and jitter aren not some kind of human feel it simply is not. A good drummer play the swing, early or late notes tight like a motherfucker. Our hearing is sub millisecond accurate (microseconds matter)
Loving these MIDI videos, I have a HP 9470 I7 running Ableton 11 lite, my conundrum is whether to use my Roland TR8S, or my Roland MX1 as the MASTER clock ? I am old school so I prefer using 5PIN DIN MIDI. Thanks in advance..
Hi - don't suppose it really matters, either can comfortably be the master clock. I suppose question might be 'do you want the TR8S to start when you start the MX1 or do you want the MX1 to start when you start the TR8S'. For example in my set I have both the Keystep Pro and the TR8S as Master clocks. If I start the TR8S it is the master clock for all my hardware synths and they all sync to its signal. If however I start the Keystep Pro, it takes over and overrides the TR8S clock and...If I press start on the Keystep Pro the TR8S automatically starts, but if I start the TR8S the Keystep is unaffected as comes before it in the chain. So, in your set up, if you put the MX1 first and set the TR8S clock to AUTO....when you press start on the MX1 the TR8S will automatically start and be in sync with the MX1 clock, however you could start the TR8S without the MX1 and all the other synths that come after it would sync to the TR8S clock, while the MX1 sits idle. But if you then started the MX1 it would take over as the clock. If you put the TR8S first and then set the MX1 clock to AUTO, the opposite will happen. Hope that made sense and helps. Cheers.
@splootyvision much appreciated , I have a Beatstep Pro too, so thank you for the complete answer., I am trying to justify whether I can do without a Erm or Midronome, I usually muck around standalone but would like to get familiar with Ableton 11 LITE (PC ) just as a sampler at this stage. ✌️ ☮️
@@gixerags750 Personally I'd say you've no need for a dedicated midi clock as the clock sources you have are pretty solid (I've never used one). The way that works best for me is to 'chain' the clock sources in order of preference before passing everything out via a midi thru box to all the other synths. So for example for you it could be Beat step pro -> MX1 -> TR8S -> thru to all other synths. Each one overrides the clock of the one before it in the chain. And if you were to then set the Beatstep pro to USB instead of Internal Clock you could take the clock from Ableton to drive everything when using the PC if you wanted 🙂
@@splootyvision sweet..cheers .
@splootyvision just a quick question, would you agree the BeatStepPro can pretty much do everything a ROLAND SBX1 sync box can do ?
Very nice information, so the TR8S clock is tight enough without the need for a ERM multiclock or MIDRONOME ? which DAW are you using? ✌️ ☮️ 🇦🇺 🪃
Hi - yep, TR8S clock is fine. I'm using Cubase Pro 13. Cheers.
@splootyvision thanks for the reply.
Very nice :) What effects do you use on your piano and voice?

I have a TC Perform-V and I'm trying to put it in the Midi chain with no success. I know which MIDI channel and the CC/PC route, but have no communication at all. It's very frustrating because there's no literature about this unit. Keep thinking it's impossible. Is there a light at the end of this tunnel or it's better change the equipment?
Hi, how are you trying to incorporate it, what are you trying to trigger it with ?. I’ve got a TC Voicelive Touch 2 and have the midi out from my FCB1010 pedal board connected to the midi in on the TC unit and it works perfectly triggering different effects with my foot pedals so I don’t have take my hands off the keys. Here’s a video I did on it. ua-cam.com/video/hHGgvqZjjzA/v-deo.htmlsi=1xB58T9XbO746b6s If you’re trying to trigger it with CC/PC from your DAW then if you’re audio interface has a midi out you should be able to connect that to your TC Midi in and get the signal into it that way. Hope that helps a bit, if need more help let me know - would need a bit more detail on your set up and how you’re trying to use it. If want to you can email me on splootyvision@gmail.com as probably be easier than in the comments here 🙂
@@splootyvisionfirst of all thank you for answer so quickly. I’m a vocal and bass player. So I’m trying to trigger vocal effects and multi effects pedal at same time setting scenes via midi and stop worrying with the “pedal dance”. 😅 It’s a very simple setup pedalboard: the TC Perform-V for the voice and a Valeton GP200LT for the bass fxs/preamp. While is simple could it be more simple. Maybe I’ll send you an email just to throw some thoughts and maybe you can enlighten me someway. Thank you again for the attention.
@@ottoramaoficialJust putting this out there. Have you thought of controlling the Valeton and the TC using a separate midi controller/pedalboard, for example something like the Behringer FCB1010 (which I have). I see that the Valeton has a midi out/thru port. So you could for example run midi from an FCB1010 to the Valeton and then the midi thru from the Valeton to the midi in on the TC and then set up each of them to separate midi channels. The FCB1010 then has the ability to store 100 presets and each preset can send 2 cc messages and 5 program change messages simultaneously with the cc messages and program changes being able to be sent on separate midi channels simultaneously. So for example you could program a preset on it to send 1 cc message to the TC unit triggering a vocal effect and at the same time another cc triggering an effect on the Valeton. You could also set them up in banks (say one bank of presets controlling the Valeton and another bank the TC unit). If you check out the FCB1010 playlist on my channel there’s a video called ‘What you can do with a Behringer FCB1010’ that demonstrates it all. I use the FCB1010 to control loads of stuff on my MODX keyboard, turn vocal effects on and off on my TC helicon, control my Guitar Rig 6 and VST Amp rack guitar effects.
@ I was thinking something like that. But the perform-V didn’t respond to TRS (Valeton’s midi out is a P2 TRS). So I began to investigate the TC usb connection. The other side of the story is I already have the chocolate pedal. So I wanted to try something without purchasing anything new. Not to mention that chocolate is very small and is convenient to put in a live pedalboard you must carry here and there. I’m a 54 years old rock player. Bass and amp weight normally make me feel older ;)
Another thought with you saying the TC didn't respond to the TRS Midi from the Valeton. You might have the wrong TRS MIDI cable as there are two types, Type A and Type B, where the the tip and ring connections are reversed. The Valeton is TRS MIDI Type A. I''m assuming that the TC Perform has a 5pin MIDI In, or is that TRS as well - if it's TRS then the TC is Type A as well so they should work together. Might be worth checking out.
Hi, I have the MicroFreak which doesn't have 5pin midi. I assume there is a new USB format synths are changing to. Is there a USBMidi to 5pin adaptor I can use to get it to work with my 5pin midi setup? I am using an old MOTU 828mk2 which I love and dont really want to update. but I will if I have to.
@@malungtvnews Hi there, the MicroFreak does have Midi in and out on the back, they are small mini jack ports and it should have come with a midi adapter. If haven’t got it you can get mini TRS to 5pin midi adapters on line, but need to make sure it’s a Type B adapter (not Type A). Are you plugging it into the Motu - if so just wondering why, if it’s to get it into the DAW - can just use the USB for that. Hope that helps. Cheers.
@splootyvision thanks for your quick reply, I have been watching and rewatching your videos for a while this afternoon. You are saying that I can plug the microfreak straight into the Mac USB port and the DAW will know? I have Ableton set to the MOTU as a controller.
@@malungtvnews Yes, the MicroFreak is USB Class Compliant and your DAW should just recognise it without the need for any additional drivers. Not sure how Ableton works but in Cubase it would just show up in the list of available inputs, assuming in Ableton it would just show up in the same place that you choose your Motu as an input. All my synths are connected to the computer via USB for use in the DAW, as well as being connected via midi cables for DAWless work without the computer. Effectively it’s a hybrid set up where everything can work with or without the computer/DAW.
@@splootyvision thanks again I will plug it back in via usb and see what there is in the preferences
@@splootyvision thanks dude you re a godsend. I bought 3 usb midi synths and I thought they weren't going to work with my old MOTU. I plugged it in via USB and it came up in the outputs in preferences of Ableton but it is all doing something weird and growling at me.I will try and make sense of it all and watch more of your videos
I have two Melo Audio Midi Commander foot controllers that I want to merge into the 'Midi In' on my Focusrite 8i8. Will a 'Quadra Thru' work or should I get a 'Quadra Merge'?
@@briankeithwaters You’ll need a ‘Merge’ box for that. Tbh I’d have a look at the CME U6Midi Pro it’s a 3in 3out and can do merge, thru and filter. Comes with free software that you use to program what you want it to do (very simple software), once programmed it doesn’t have to be tethered to a computer. It also requires a power supply (usb to mains adapter or to pc), whereas the Quadra Merge is self powered via the midi cables - but it’s about a third of the price of the Quadra merge (£40 for the CME vs about £120 for the Quadra Merge). Cheers
Akai Mpc2000xl is the brain for my midi. 32 midi channels. 32 devices.
The one thing I have learned in 26 years of music production is money spent to increase the following: 1. The quality of your room (room treatment) and monitoring, 2. Your efficiency (efficiency= increasing computer power/ reduction in time requirements/decreases power conception/eliminates redundancy/increase storage&backup capabilities/allows for expansion and growth), and 3. less cabling is money well spent. This is a great master class for MIDI planning.
Excellent explanation 👍
Thank you again for this great video. I have a first very simple question to ask: With a mixer that has inserts plug ins for external effects, is there any need for a patchbay ?
Hi there tbh never used a patchbay nor currently use any external effects. But the way I understand it is the ‘effect send’ is sent from the mixer to the external effect and then that returned to the ‘effect returns’ on the mixer - you can then access that effect on any channel on the mixer by turning up the effects knob on the relevant channel. So essentially, no, you wouldn’t need a patchbay - but obviously depends on exactly what you’re wanting to do/achieve. Hope that helps. Cheers 🙂
@@splootyvision Yes, that helps a lot, thank you again so much, Master Splooty ! Cheers!🙂
@@splootyvision Dear Master Splooty, Again, one more short question; I needed more inputs to my Steinberg audio interface, so I got two cheap mixers Moukey, one with 8 inputs, the other with 6, since they were out of stock for 8. Whatever, the question is do you think those damage sound quality and I should get a true mixer Yamaha, Zoom, Mackie, Behringer with incorporated audio interface, and get rid of my Steinberg interface, my 2 Moukey line mixers and my patchbay and plenty of redundant cabling ? I'm turning around that question for months. Thank you so much for all your precious advices. Cheers, Alain
@ Hi - I don’t think the Moukey mixer should effect the sound much, only thing they might do is introduce a bit more noise when you crank the volumes (but reading a few reviews most people say the units are pretty quiet on that front). On the other thing, really depends on how much you want to spend and if you feel it’s worth it for your set up. In terms of the mixer/interface combo, tbh if you got a cheaper mixer with lots of inputs it would most likely still only have one stereo out - so not gaining much over your current set up (apart from everything in one place). However if you went for a mixer/interface with outputs for each input then there are major advantages that each input can be output on its own channel for recording/mixing later. There’s numerous options depending on how much want to spend. Full on mixers with separate input/outputs per channel would be things like Tascam Model 24 or Zoom L-20 which run to about £800-£1000. Or you could ditch the mixer completely and just go for an interface with all the inputs you need. I just purchased an Audient EVO16 with an SP8, which gives me 16 inputs. (I’ve got 5 stereo synths going in on 10 inputs along with 2 mono synths and two mics going to another 4 inputs). Again fairly pricey at around £750. The EVO 16 can be expanded with 2 x SP8s giving 24 inputs. A cheaper option might be say a Behringer UMC1820 (8 inputs) with a Behringer ADA8200 ADAT box, giving another 8 inputs. Hope that helps. Cheers, Graeme
@@splootyvision Hello ! Thank you very very much for your precious explanation. The bottom line: I would feel better with one thing instead of those connected devices plus redundant cables, I have this patchbay only to incorporate one external effects device, which is frustrating and somehow ridiculous, since it adds so many redundant cables. So, for sure, as a general rule, I love to simplify, but is it worth $900 ? That's the question I've been asking myself for a couple of years. Your answer about the sound quality is very precious and surprisingly reassuring about those Moukey line mixers. It confirms my impression; sounds OK to me but so incredibly cheap, or does it mean the others are abusively expensive ? Indeed, the question is do I want to spend $900 to have a cleaner set up. And you perfectly summarized it. I am not such a great musician who needs top notch devices. I also need to further learn the devices I already have. Behringer 2600 is not easy, Alesis SR18 seems to me cumbersome, if you want to build your own patterns. Above all, my ears are not top notch; I got a cochlear implant on the left and an hearing aid on the right, without all this embarked high tech, I am technically 100% deaf... Unlikely that a nice mixer would make my music much better. Maybe it would be more fun to put this money in small Behringer units I' m attracted to, like the Solina string ensemble, Crave, Pro-800, Toro, etc Nice little toys, easy to satisfy my Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Or a nice little Moog, they really sound great, even my little Werkstatt. A Moog Sub Phatty is same price than a Zoom mixer. And at the age of 65 maybe it's time to get some Moog stuff, they do really sound so good. Thanks to you, I have now all the data I need to think about it. Thank you again, Master Splooty. Cheers. Have a great week end, my dear friend and teacher. Alain Post Scriptum: I'm just curious, I noticed something about the output power, is it me or does the Behringer devices have a lower output level than the Bass Station 2 and the highest output comes even from this tiny Moog ? Does it make sense? Post Scriptum 2 : I only use my DAW for recording, so I'm not so much computer dependent, and aren't devices like Akai MPC etc...small music dedicated computers, so what's the difference when you use s computer exclusively dedicated to your music recording? And if you record on SD and want to send your recording you still need a computer. So I'm not DAWless I am minimally DAW. BTW, Garage Band on IPad is incredibly fun and so user friendly, Cubase should learn from it, I will incorporate my IPad to my setting.
Do you build your own MIDI cables? Some of the cables you using must be of great length which leads me to my question. What’s your take on Roland using small stereo jacks? Myself I like this because it’s easy to construct them.
Nope, never tried building my own. Longest MIDI cables in my room are 15ft 🙂
advanced midi user here- I run regulated 8.5V around my midi cabling using the unusd connectors. in some devices, these are either absent o connected internally, so I break out the dc at the jack & add an appropriate dc connector on a short cable. other gear allows the dc to be wired up internally. this keeps the studio/stage free of wall warts & their annoying flimsy wires which radiate intrference as well as being a mess & a trip hazard. also big weight saving when travelling, & the camcorder supply doesn't care what mains supply it gets. also, nothing to forget! camcorder supply is a sony; I carry a spare, but any decent supply can be subbed in, in a crisis. the main psu is a camcorder supply capable of several amps, & has an absolutely smooth output. only a couple of times I've encountered devices *without* their own internal regulation down to 5V (midiplus keyboard controller is one example) & so I've added a 7805 regulator inside them where needed. I use a couple of blokas midihubs for filtering, mapping & scale generation, & a bunch of different midi controllers- doepfer pocket controllers & the bare-board equivalents, the midiplus & evolution keyboard controllers, various hardware sequencers (doepfer maqs, notrons, sequentix P3 & cirklon), peavey pc1600, peavey midibase & so on.

Thank you so much for these tutorials. x
I was hoping to see how you could use a DAW as the master clock via an audio interface. Thanks for this well presented video.
Hi and thanks. I've done a whole other video on MIDI Clock you can find here ua-cam.com/video/SmTuCjfD6Ts/v-deo.htmlsi=G-Pp7g2cngXxLWDZ At around 11:20 I show how I use the DAW as master clock to drive the Keystep Pro and then onto everything else. Instead of setting the Keystep Pro though as the destination for the DAW clock, I could set the Audio interface and then anything connected to the MIDI Out of that would receive the DAW clock. In the video I'm using Cubase, but would assume other DAWs have similar functionality. Hope that helps. Cheers, Graeme
Thank you for this very useful video. Questions: 1/ if you use a "regular" full keyboard instead of the Keysteps why not using a Beatstep instead ? 2/ can a simple sequencer like Korg SQ1 substitute for Keysteps ?
Hi and thanks. I tend to use the Keystep Pro and Keystep 37 while sitting at the desk to generate ideas and do use their keyboards. The KS Pro sequences 4 tracks and the KS37 can sequence one, with a second played live over the top - so effectively I can get something going utilising all 6 hardware synths. If I want to generate a more complex sequence that spans more than the 37 keys, then I tend to use the synth itself so I don’t have to keep octave shifting the Keystep up and down (also I tend to record sequences in ‘real-time’ rather than ‘step-recording’. In terms of something like an SQ1, it’s pretty limited as can only run either 2 x 8 step sequences or 1 x 16 step sequencer, whereas the Keystep are both 64 step sequences - the KS Pro can have 16 x 64 step sequences per track and the KS37 can store 8 x 64 step sequences, so much more powerful than the SQ1. Predominantly I use them for jamming live for fun and as I say fleshing out ideas - when it comes to proper recording everything is sequenced in the DAW (sometimes by recording the sequences in from the Keysteps). Hope that made some sort of sense 🙂
@@splootyvision thank you for your prompt answer, what about the Beatstep pro ?
Hi - the Beatstep only has 3 tracks (2 tracks plus a drum track), whereas the Pro has 4 tracks and one of them can either be a sequence or a drum track) - all in its more powerful than the beatstep as far as I'm aware and also I prefer keys to pads for programming or playing sequences (I'm a pianist 🙂 and never got my head round playing notes on pads other than for drums). You do however get more knobs on the Beatstep meaning greater control over parameters like cc's if you want. I suppose its the usual different horses for different courses and comes down to personal preference. Cheers.
Thanks again so much for this clarification, I m also a pianist and don't know at all how to use pads. But I have more than enough keyboards ( Kurzweil SP4, Bass Station 2 , DeepMind 12 and Seaboard Roli 49 first gen... and a Yamaha upright silent series piano), that's why I asked this question. Actually I use the Kurzweil as MIDI keyboard master to which I added Korg SQ1 and an old Boss Pedal GT3. I also have a Behringer 2600 and a small Moog Werkstatt, plus a Alesis SR18 as a drum machine. I use a MIDI interface ESI M8U eX 16-Port, but I have been disappointed by it since the USB inputs are only a HUB they don't interact with the other MIDI inputs, unlike the 3 examples you showed (Motu, Mio and Conductive Labs) I regret not having bought the Conductive Lab, but the ESI was much cheaper, and I didn't anticipate this false USB connection, but it helps by avoiding daisy chaining. Something to share for people not making the same mistake. Main issues for me are synchronizing everything and incorporating the Seaboard (I assume I might use a USB-B splitter and a small Kenton MIDI box) We are moving soon and I will reconnect everything, at that point, may I ask for some advices for improving my setting? Cheers.
Yep - I just use pads for finger drumming. For everything else - if it's not laid out like piano keys I just get lost 😂 See you're rocking the Deepmind 12 and original Seaboard 49, which I also have 🙂 and....I also have a Yamaha Clavinova CVP-405 downstairs :-)
Can you give a masterclass on sysex. I want to be able to configure the synth patches from my daw by song.
@@user-xd1qr9lg6v Hi - something I’d have to look into, tbh I don’t use SysEx - but something been meaning to investigate more. What DAW are you using - I know in Cubase there are the bank and program selector boxes where you can enter the values for a preset. For example my Deepmind 12 has 8 banks of 128 presets, so if I set up a midi track assigned to the Deepmind and put say 3 and 24, when I load up the Cubase project it will automatically set the Deepmind to the 24th preset in the third bank. Would assume other DAWS have similar capability.
MIDI is super handy. It allows to make so much stuff. WIDI takes it to extreme fun in my case, since I have Korg downstairs with a PA & a Laney, controlled by a Roland upstairs with a Tascam going to both a Sony/Technics Component Home Theater & an EV evolve. The noise it makes rattles the building. 😈
I really like your videos. Even topics I thought I've already mastered, there's always something I did not know. Also, parts of our gear overlap, so there are often examples with gear I either already own or wanna own in the future, so there's a lot I can directly apply.
Great video, and I’m especially happy that you use the same setup that I have. One issue I had once with midi and usb connected simultaneously was a midi message loop , so notes were fired even when nothing was triggered by sequencers or controllers. So midi channel setup is crucial not only on the devices but also on your DAW
Great minds think alike 🙂
This guy is great. MIDI may be an ancient protocol but straightforward, to-the-point explanations like this are surprisingly hard to come by. Thank you!
Thank you very much, very kind words indeed and much appreciated :-)
Get the MRCC Mioxl has crap support and the limitations make it crap. MRCC no bullshit. Now here comes the questions. Watched this video 6 times. I am type 5 dawless as right now. I have a way to get to the daw via A/D D\A via arturia 16 and 8 pre & BLA revolution 8. Thats another a question for future video. So here is the question why is the TR8S not sending clock into the Keystep pro and then into the quadra thru out? so here is the deal i would love to do this config im gonna mention but i understand why you do it your way. MIDRINOME MASTER CLOCK 5 pin midi send> TR8S master stop start midi in from midrinome, midi send from TR8S to quadra thru or a Yamaha MJC8 ( own it but never used yet) was told it a 1 in 8 thru. I got to do more research. Then one midi out to 3 quadea thru going 2 x keystep pros + 1 Beatstep pro giving me 12 channels only issue is max is 4 voice on the Keystep and beatstep pro. So how would you sequence 16 channels at once in sync ❤
Hi there, if check out my MIDI Clock video here ua-cam.com/video/SmTuCjfD6Ts/v-deo.htmlsi=vHwgUpfYsMOVMXyJ hopefully might explain it a little more. Basically the Keysteps only send out MIDI Clock when they're sequencers/arpeggiators are armed (set to play). And I wanted to be able to use the TR8S as master clock for my other hardware with inbuilt sequencers like my PolyBrute, Matrixbrute and MODX8+ when I wasn't using the Keysteps. With my current set up, the TR8S acts as master clock, but when I arm the Keystep it overrides the drum machine and becomes the master clock (and indeed I can then override the Keystep with the clock from my DAW which would then sync everything). For your set up it looks like it makes sense to have the TR8S at the start as the master, although not sure the purpose of the Midrinome - could just use the TR8S as the master ?. So I would say TR8S to thru box, thru box out to Keystep/beatsteps and then assume they are all then connected out to various synths/modules some other thru boxes ?. Ideal solution might be the TR8S, the Keysteps and all the synths into and out of something like an MRCC and then just route everything internally how you want it ? In terms of sequencing 16 tracks, well I suppose another KS Pro ? or you could start looking at things like MPC One, Elektron Digitakt, Novation Circuit tracks which are all 8 track sequencers I believe, so adding one of those would allow up to 20 tracks sequenced at once :-) Hope that helps. Cheers, Graeme
@splootyvision dayum 20. Ill stick to 16 . Yes i already ordered my a second KSP and realizes i have the bsp and havent really figured that one out. I have everything set to clock midi on all units ksp is sending midi out. I cant get my Tr8s to co operate lately . I had to go old school to my yamaha rx5 and sy1 behringer. And use ksp to trigger drums. Off rx5 sy1. What sequencers dont have key limitations for sequencing chords ksp limits to 4 notes per step. Ive seen another device by Kilpatrick carbon midi does 6? Is work around to this 2 diff seq sent to same synth say 2 ksp on same midi channel one playing right hand and one left? The Midronome is an midi master clock zero midi clock Jitter and 110% stable clock turns all into midi slaves. It also wont allow a unit to drift what so ever. All my poly synths 1 dual jpo8 1 dual ju06a i have swing 32 for these so ill have 2 dedicated just to these then Hydraynth deluxe, emu Proteus 1& 2, Micromonsta 2 , and my Dual Pro800. So if i follow what the other vids say all of these have sequencers build in except hydrasynth. I need the swing 32 to operate a round robin box to send keys to each roland dual pack i have. The rest of my setup is dual tb303, a matrix brute. TORO, Minitaur and model d behringer. So lastly what are the correct settings on tr8s to recieve or send auto? I cant get it to play nice
Blimey, trying to get my head round all that - nice selection of gear :-) For the TR8S, press utility and turn the value knob to get to SYNC/TEMPO menu Set the 'TempoSync' to AUTO, then set the 'RxStartStop' to ON. Then go to the MIDI menu and turn 'Soft Thru' to ON and also turn 'Omni Mode' to OFF (That's how I have all mine set up anyhow). Hope that helps. Cheers.
I can’t thank you enough for this great MIDI series, extremely helpful.👏🏻
These are all very helpful but somehow I always run into issues implementing. Have you used the CME routers or low latency WIDI? How do you handle all the cables - bundled per instrument or per type (audio, midi, power)? I'm about to give up on having everything connected but wireless midi (WIDI) a couple long usb cables (one for router one for interface) might make it doable
@@zmmmzmmmz Hi, not used the CME stuff but comments I’ve seen they seem to be good kit. I got a DOREMiDI merge box recently which is at the lower end budget wise like CME and it’s really good quality and so far worked flawlessly. Tbh cabling is not something I’ve really spent too much time focusing on….and there’s tons of it !!, but never caused me any problems. I’ve got 4 extension cables running off 2 double plug sockets powering everything, around 14 audio cables running into a mixer, 6 audio cables running out to various speakers, around 20 individual USB cables running to 2 USB hubs and into the PC and then about 20+ MIDI cables running from synths to thru and merge boxes etc. Tbh under the desks and keyboard stands it’s quite a mess and I am planning to sort it all out and tidy it all up - but as I say it’s never caused me any issues, pretty much out of sight, out of mind 🙂
great video, thanks
Excellent……….British sound coming from….the last century…..toute une époque……new wave, pop, rock………good job, good sound, good mix……….GOD SAVE THE QUEEN…….. » J.Rot « 😂
Splooty, thank you very much for explaining & demonstrating the four waves in regards to poly & paraphony, it was all useful. Should've added, as stated in your pinned comment, that not all paraphonic synths have four oscillators... P.S. Square wave forever (don't recall you explicitly mentioning the square).
Good morning, watching your videos has me pumped up to redo my setup. My question....I'm running logic pro on my ipad connected to mpc live ii and midi keyboard. My issue is I have a kurzweil k2000 which doesn't have usb and I'm trying to add it to my setup to sync via midi to the mpc. How do I go about this. I have all the audio routed to my mackie pro fx10v3. Help a old school guy out. I come from a analog background trying to go hybrid. By the way...best information yet I have found YT
Hi, I'm assuming the MIDI keyboard runs to one of the MIDI ins on the MPC2 ?. I can see that the MPC has 2 MIDI Ins and 2 MIDI Outs, so I would have thought you could run the MIDI Out of the k2000 to the other MIDI In on the MPC and then corresponding MIDI Out on the MPC to the MIDI In on the k2000. This would allow 2 way communication between the MPC and the k2000, so that you could use it to play 'into' the MPC, but also have the MPC send its clock signal out the k2000. I'm also assuming here the MPC is connected to the laptop from its USB port. In a DAW environment you can run the audio from the mixer to an audio interface and into Logic via USB. If you want to record the MIDI data (e.g. notes played etc), you'll be able to record the MPC as the USB will send and receive the MIDI data, but for your k2000 you'd need something like a midi usb host box, for example a DOREMiDi UMhH-10 USB MIDI Host. A box like that takes the old MIDI cables and converts them into USB for connecting to a computer. This though would take away the connection between the k2000 and the MPC. Best option therefore might be a MIDI interface, where you can connect the MIDI from the MIDI Keyboard, the MIDI in and out from the MPC and the MIDI in and out from the k2000. All of these would then send MIDI data over a single USB from the Midi Interface to a computer/DAW, but you can also program the routing in the midi interface itself as to what sends its signals where, so that the MPC can send clock out to the k2000 etc. There are tons of options out there, all depends on exactly what you're trying to connect to what and how you want them to all work. Hope that helps. Cheers, Graeme.
Thank you Splooty....I appreciate your response and help. Im going to try that out tomorrow. I will follow up on how it turned out.@splootyvision
Very clear but my brain exploded a few times!
thank you so much for the helpful video. atm im facing a very similar task, extended by a few synths and samplers and midi over bluetooth, to spice things up.
Thank you for this and your other videos - incredibly clear and helpful and very relevant to my set up! I'm also trying to get a hybrid set up. At the moment I only really use a daw to record audio so would be very interested to see your video on recording midi into a daw. I originally used a cheap midi thru/merge box from gear4music to link everything up but it developed problems (it could have been midi feedback issues?) and it could only work directly with 4 devices so also relied on some daisy chaining. I now have 2 midi controllers connected out only to a kenton thru 12 box. In order to merge the 2 midi controller outputs, I bought a midi y splitter cable to go into the single midi in port on the kenton box. However, this might have been a mistake as I occasionally get stuck notes, and I think it might be that the midi data is getting a bit scrambled by the splitter cable as it's essentially working it was desgned to split/duplicate the signal rather than merge, so I need to get a proper merge box. I use an arturia keystep as master clock, but as the clock signal is only sent when either the keystep sequencer or arpeggiator are running it starts everything together which can of course be very useful but can also be annoying if you didn't want it to! I have set things up so my volcas can start on a completely empty sequence if necessary but you still need to physically stop the volca sequencer if you want to play it live. I really should go into the keystep settings to see if there is anything I can do about this but if you or anyone else know how to just output a clock signal without sequencer transport controls that would be great! Cheers!
Hi and thanks, Yep you really need a merger like I have in my set up - the midi controllers got to a merge box and then 'thru' the drum machine and onto a thru box that branches out to the synths. Y Splitters are okay for simple duplication of a signal but not for merging (I use one so that I can send the signal from my FCB1010 to both a thru box and the MIDI in on my audio interface). If you get a merger, get one one with 'midi filtering' capability which will also help solve your clock/start/stop issue. I have a DOREMiDi Merge 5 Pro with 'filtering' (about £50) which merges 5 ins to 2 outs and has a software editor that allows you to program the box and filter things out, so for example you can filter out the start/stop messages from the Keystep so they never reach the other synths (the clock signal though would continue through 'unharmed' 🙂). You just plug the merge box into a USB and open the software editor to program the box, once any changes are saved, they are saved the box itself and you don't need the USB attached anymore (but as it's usb powered you might just leave it plugged into the PC or a powered USB hub anyhow). Another would say fits the bill is the CME U6MIDIPro - which is a 3 in 3 out Thru/Merge/Filter and is only about £40, like the DORE it has a software editor where you can filter midi messages. Hope that all helps. Cheers, Graeme :-)
Thanks Graeme - that is really helpful advice 👍
Ok..... that merge through map is certainly overwhelming. However, i do have a handful of midi gadgets and rackmount effects devices / drum pad. Access to 2 DAW's. I most certainly would like to be a bit more dangerous in this department. I would definitely like to give some of this a go. I'm self taught in all i have done. And it has been a very long road. I can figure this out.
So, I am not sure what you are doing with all this exactly, but why can't you just do all this on a decent powerful computer with one good decent piano with nice keys. I have a decent simple yamaha with weighted keys that my laptop can hover over it with my bed desk and hold a bigger monitor and keybaord and mouse and a small audio interface on it.
Hi, effectively Yes, you could make all the 'sounds' using VSTs on a computer - if you check out my Home Studio Set Up Video, I delve into this showing you can produce music with either a little or a lot of gear. However I find this is quite limiting when it comes to creativity. You can only really play and record one track at a time, however I like to jam live creating ideas have multiple sequencers going, twisting and changing knobs and sliders on the fly etc. I do use and have a lot of software synths, but tend to find the hardware more inspiring. That being said there's nothing wrong with being totally 'in the box', many people prefer it (and it can be much cheaper !) 🙂
Thanks! This was very helpful!
Recently moved from thru boxes and a very nice "intelligent" retrokits merge/thru to the MioXL. What tipped me over was wanting more divices with a dedicated in/out for older devices i want to dump sounds to/from via sysex. So far very happy and having less issues with midi loops. To note... the issue with the usb ports is that they are MIDI only hence why you can't update firmware or use editors as you would through a usb hub (for devices that require that). Its a nice piece of kit though and easy to filter data to different synths. Still a lot to learn though and think I'll still need my thru boxes! 😂🙂
Yep, I keep getting tempted by the mioXL and indeed if I do expand to more synths in the future I'm pretty sure I'll end up getting one :-)
Audio rooting tuts are fine, midi rooting tuts are too. Now we need power plugs routing tuts.
Dawless recording, you didn't mention recorder / mixers like Tascams or the Zoom R16 or R24. Useful video, thanks.
@@9crutnacker985 Thanks for that, and yes tbh hadn’t really looked into them before, but someone else mentioned them as well and so been starting to look into them a bit 🙂
so where's your 'magic of midi channels' link?

I like using the pics of the gear too, I've just done a flow chart using excalidraw. I need to update with the pics. I also just got a doremidi msc-10 just out ($160) - looking forward to revising my setup using your guidance. I think it really helps me, to draw it all out, like you have.
Wow, this is a strong competitor to the Blokas MidiHub and a LOT cheaper than a MioXL.
Quick note on the MioXL: for synths that have software editors, etc., you can plug them into the MioXL via DIN and your PC via USB at the same time 😊
@@maddmugsy Excellent stuff, thanks for that 🙂
Another good video explained via chartboards, but we wanna see step by step video all menü tweaks right from the start "squencer" - lots of parameters needs to be explaned in menus i think. is it possible :D .. thanx by the way
@@seyittahirozuolmez1026 Hi and thanks. Yep it’s pretty difficult to try and cover everything in one video. If you check out the MIDI playlist on my channel there’s lots of other videos that cover some of the other details e.g. how to set the midi channels, how to do the MIDI clock settings, how to configure thru ports in settings etc. Am also planning a video to show in practice how everything works with physical demonstrations of what triggers what and how it all works 🙂
@splootyvision your setup is just like mine. Root start with keystep through going into motu express xt.. And lots of synth. Mine keystep is a new thing in my . İ cant setup it proper. All my headaches comea from it. :) thanx for answers
